After an aborted attempt to eat a falafel at Taim[1], I found myself walking along 6th Avenue towards the W 4th subway stop, on a muggy summer evening, hungry. VERY hungry.
As I get close to my destination, I am attracted by the wonderful smells coming out of this food cart. Yes: wonderful smells! This cart, whose full name should be Sammay's Halal Food, apparently has won several street food awards (or at least this is what the articles glued on the side of the truck claim).
Being a Sammay's virgin, I decided to play safe and ordered a gyro platter. It was nothing short of excellent: the meat (quite a lot of it) was super-tender, juicy, and full of flavor; served over a bed of rice that was nicely cooked, with the grains still separate and of the right consistency. The white sauce was creamy and tasty, and the hot sauce was HOT, not some watered down bidet water for pussies.
Overall the serving ($5) was very generous. One thing I would have liked is more greens, but I guess that if you want a salad perhaps a gyro platter from a street cart shouldn't be your first choice[2]. Also, a couple of pieces of pita would have been nice.
A winner. Now I want to try their lamb. And their chapli kebab.

[1] At 8 pm on a Wednesday there was a line of about 30 people...
[2] Although they do serve a veggie platter.
