7 Best Chicago Bars & Restaurants for Mexican Food & Margaritas | Eater

"Who says you have to go into the city for great Mexican food? They’ve clearly never been to Sammy’s. With two locations in the Western suburbs, this menu is not joking around when it comes to its dishes. Sure there are some gringo options like the burger, but most of the menu is straight from south of the border. The cochinita pibil tacos are piled high with slow-braised pork, pickled red onions, and habanero hot sauce, and the red mole hits the perfect balance of earthy and smoky. The margarita menu is vast, and you can’t go wrong with the roasted pineapple margarita with Cazadores Reposado tequila, fresh lime, agave, and a hint of chile on the rim." - Vox Creative

Great food flavor. I ordered Mole Poblano with chicken and a Horchata drink. The mole poblano was surprisingly good. The horchata drink was also great. I made a pit stop here during a road trip and discovered this Mexican restaurant. I will come back in the future for sure. My waiter, Martin, was great by the way. Thanks!

Our first time here, and we’ll definitely be back! The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The service was great too, very friendly and attentive. We loved the atmosphere—warm and inviting. We tried the Parmigiana, which included a taste of steak, chicken, prawns ,chorizo and shrimp—everything was tender and incredibly tasty. Highly recommended!

Very good chips and salsa. Decided to go with a Oaxaca theme so I ordered a Pineapple Margarita with mezcal which was amazing. The red mole with option of chicken or steak was something I had was not familiar with. Bizzare was that the chicken (and beef to I assume) was in strips and not a whole piece traditionaly like in Oaxaca. No matter because the secret red sauce was on par and delicious, and at the end of the day that's all that really matters. Beans and rice have great flavor. Plenty of TVs to watch the game. Mexican cumbia on stereo to entertain.

It is my 70th Birthday and I walked into Sammys’ Roselle Mexican Grille, they made me feel like family. Blue Margarita and perfect margarita were out of this world. Had salsa, quac and chips (fresh and delicious). Atmosphere is great. They also have a food truck. Martin taught me about tequila and India taught me the difference of the food. Don’t walk run to Sammy’s for great food and a great time.

Google
Place is huge, service was fast but atmosphere could be little more arranged. It was our first here at the lunch. The place was having moderate occupancy. Best part, food was delicious. Great fajita and Tortilla Soup was my favorite. We ordered two Tacos for To Go but when it was time to eat I found only one.

Went to Sammy’s Mexican Grill (Roselle location, but they also have one in Elgin), and it was such a fun time. On weekends, they have a live band, and the energy is amazing! Started off with margaritas—pineapple, mango, and a non-alcoholic one—and the mango was the clear winner. So good. For apps, we got the queso and loaded veggie nachos, and both were fire. The queso was actually really flavorful, not just basic melted cheese. For entrées, I got the Hot Cheeto Burrito, and if you go for one thing, make it this—so, so, so good. We also had the loaded veggie chimichangas and stuffed quesadillas, and everything was packed with flavor. Plus, the portions? Massive. The chimichanga was huge. Ended the meal with fried ice cream and flan, and I was shocked at how good they were since I’d never had either before. Definitely worth it! On top of all that, the staff was awesome—super friendly and welcoming. If you want great food, strong margaritas, and a fun atmosphere, Sammy’s is the spot!

Gave this location a try for the first time last night, and we were thoroughly impressed. Put in an order online for delivery, and it showed up promptly within an hour, which was exactly the time they said it would arrive. Ordered an appetizer sampler, a steak burrito dinner with fries, and a taco dinner with rice and beans. For the taco dinner, you can order 3 tacos and choose if you prefer flour or corn tortillas. I got one steak, one ground beef, and one al pastor on flour tortillas, all with cilantro and onions. The steak burrito was delicious and filling and used very excellent quality steak. Every bite was a juicy explosion of well-seasoned and perfectly cooked tender steak with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. The tacos were magnificent. Once again, they used great quality meats, well-seasoned, and expertly cooked. Every bite was nice and was a savory journey experienced thrice with each taco. The fries were crispy and delightful, and the rice and beans were decent and tasted like your standard Mexican rice and beans. The salsas that came with were also fantastic. Spicy, but not regretfully so. Overall, it was a fantastic culinary experience, and we were delighted that we gave this location a shot, as we were left satiated and fulfilled. So come one, come all, and come give Sammy's Mexican Grill and Bar a go. You won't be disappointed. Cheers!

Google
The food is good, but my experience last week was not. The waitress took my debit card and charged me twice, once for the total bill and the second time included the tip I authorized. She tapped the card and caught my attention when she put the chip in. She gave me the handheld device to put in the tip and sign. The only thing she gave was the original bill back, never a receipt for the payment. The restaurant is not responding back once they fix it like they said they would even though I called them twice. I'm disputing this with my bank, but I'm very disappointed with this waitresses action. I won't be patronizing them again.

Yelp
Sammy's has been one of my favorite restaurants in the area since moving to Schaumburg in 2021. Their whole menu is great, but their pulled chicken burrito is my favorite menu item by far. The only reason i'm rating 4 out of 5 stars is because they exclude their storefront from basically all promotions via food delivery apps (and they raise their prices), yet they don't have a delivery service of their own. It's a 20min drive and while I understand raising their general prices, excluding basically all app promotions is the reason I hardly eat their food anymore. For 2 burritos, service fee and driver tip, almost $60 isn't worth it.

Yelp
07/14/24 - I went to Sammy's Mexican Grill after spending sometime @ Woodfield Shopping Mall. Why we had a Groupon $15 for $7.50 so it helped defer the overall cost. Before we ordered we were given chips & salsa which we enjoyed munching down on. We split a taco dinner w/4 charbroiled steak tacos w/beans served in a corn tortilla wrap & rice. Even though the price point of $26 for 4 tacos w/beans & rice is a bit much for the meal the quality was excellent w/very generous portions of charbroiled skirt steak topped w/guacamole, queso fresco, cilantro & onions served on a double corn tortilla (our preference). These tacos were exceptional great flavor & very generous portions of thick cut charbroiled skirt steak. The beans were also excellent& served in a small bowl formed and made from a corn tortilla. The rice was very good & seasoned well. Even though we split we had more than enough & left w/our hunger completely satiated. Overall I felt that this meal was exceptional & will definitely go back again if I'm out in that area. I also paired this with/a nice cold Modelo cerveza. I mean what's better than charbroiled skirt steak tacos & a nice cold beer. Our server was very attentive & did a great job. The dining room has a nice decor & there is a large outdoor patio that is great now that the weather is warmer. (A little to too warm & humid for us outside today). Even as I'm writing this review I'm thinking about the thick juicy portions of skirt steak on the tacos & I know I will be back again when I'm in the area (unfortunately I live in Chicago 37 miles away) Thank you for an enjoyable meal

Yelp
Food, service and order taking was amazing. Very easy and pleasant to deal with. I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Always passed by this place so decided to stop in. Got seated right away. Our server was super informative and always kept the conversation going with us making us feel welcome. We got chips and salsa for a start and the salsa I recommend it had a nice kick to it. Chips were good as well We got steak tacos and baja fish tacos with the beans and rice. I'd say both meals were a 6/10, the steak wasn't too bad just different than expected. The fish was too fishy and couldn't get over it even with having the chipotle mayo on it. The beans were all stuck together with a mush so it wasn't too great. The rice was just okay. The pico on the tacos was good though. Overall inside is pretty small compared to the actual building when driving by it, nice bar area though.

Yelp
We were actually on our way to a different Mexican restaurant when we drove by and decided to turn around. I had forgotten about this location, I think we were at the Elgin location once before. Walking in the have a nice space and a great patio area. It reminded us of One Taco Dos Tequilas until we found out they have the same owners. Service was a bit slow over all but friendly and fine. We started with some good Margarita's I got a very good Guava Margarita and my wife got the skinny spicy cucumber that she enjoyed. The bar menu is quite extensive and the Margaritas are a good size. The chips and salsa was good, I prefer green salsa but their table red was good. For food I could not pass up the Sammys Torta with milanesa, fried egg, hot dog, ham and chorizo. It was even better than i expected, it was excellent, perfect balance, well built (somehow it wasn't just falling apart) the egg wasn't quite as runny as i would like but it wasn't hard either. My wife got the Baja salad, lots of shrimp and pineapple and avocado. We waited around for awhile for the check and take out box as I could only finish half my torta. Good bar, good food, nice please. we will be back

Yelp
The burrito was a little small but tasty steak looked very good and tasted very good service was very good sometimes I was confused when ordering because the waitress wasn't fully fluent in English but we made it work

Yelp
Came here for the first time with my family. Food service and ambiance was great. Our server Manuel was amazing and attentive. We had the Carne Asada, enchilada with green salsa dinner the rice was soft beens were good. We also had Jalisco Salad and Tostadas de ceviche. To drink we had Michelada Pacifico. I never had this drink before it was amazing!! For dessert we had flan and churros yum!I'm a very picky person when it comes to food. All in all I was very impressed with their food and service. I will be coming with my husband soon.

Lucy G.

Yelp
We had my daughter's 16th birthday party on the patio accomodating 34 friends and family members. Martin was great to work with. Great service Great food! Gracias por todo! Will certainly consider this restaurant again.

Yelp
Went with my work besties on a Friday night and we sat outside. The food was exceptional and the service was great. Their drink menu was extensive and I had a hard time choosing what alcoholic beverage to get! Since I limit myself to one, I had the red sangria. It was tasty.

Peter S.

Yelp
This place has really become a dump. Prices went up, portions are small, quality has gone down and I am not sure I would call what we got as service. 4 people. 2 burrito dinners, 2 steak taco dinner and a 3 steak taco dinner with 2 beverages was $137. I can get better food, bigger portions and same low engagement service at a take out burrito dive location for half the price.

Yelp
Came here with my wife for some food and Pina coladas. First time here. Staff was friendly and attentive. I like the restaurants atmosphere as well. For food, we ordered elotes, chicken flautas, & chicken quesadillas. We really liked all the food! The elotes was a bit different than we are used to. But it was still very good. All the food was great. The pina coladas my wife and I disagree on. She thought they tasted too much like alcohol. I kind of agree, I could taste it. But to me, that's a bonus. I get pina coladas often; and I don't like when I get one that tastes like no alcohol is in it. This one I will be back for, the wife will just have to get a different drink.

Yelp
Good quality and portions. I had the salad only because I'm low carb but it was good! I'll go back.

Yelp
good service, good was pretty good. I would say come here for a few things...the habanero sauce, the pibil with the pickled red onions, and the fancy drinks. I have been to each location numerous times. More so Elgin. But here at Roselle staff is always friendly just not as great of ambience. The dragonfruit margaritas are really good. Might not be on the menu but they will make it. This time I tried the chimichanga. The nacho cheese on top was a little off putting. May have said it on the menu and I didn't read that but either way. It was very good leftover since I couldn't finish it after eating shrimp tacos as an appetizer with guacamole on the side for chips. Also, the grilled onions and jalapeños are worth the $3. Would go back, wife loved the mole enchiladas with chicken. The rice here always has a weird taste similar to the way a gerbil cafe might smell. But beans are fine.

Laura L.

Yelp
We drive all the way to Roselle to drop off our son at the roller rink. Sammy's is the perfect spot while we wait. We've only been disappointed once by the chicken mole. My husband has since been having the tacos which he really enjoys. The drinks are always great. The churros are hot and fresh! And my son always request and enjoys the traditional torta with grilled chicken.

Yelp
I used to go to the Elgin location often when I lived there and this location is also so good! I ordered 3 tacos a la carte... Surf and turf (steak and shrimp), Don Chido (fajita chicken and bacon), and No Manches (shredded pork). They were all delicious but my fav was the Don Chido. They have great mole too!

Mary L.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. I had the chimichanga but the pollo arroz looked amazing. Chips and salsa were great

Brian B.

Yelp
I was a regular loyal customer spending upwards of $60 a week at Sammy's. An incident occurred where they did not properly charge me. It was only $20 but they forced me to pay it two weeks later! I was there a couple times between when this originally occurred and when they made me pay it. Clearly $20 Is worth more to them than my business. I won't be going back! Everything is also WAY over priced. 4 tacos is close the $20! And a meal for two is close to $50! MINIMUM. This place is not worth your time, I suggest Panchos off wise road! Better food, better customer service, and better priced.

Carole R.

Yelp
This was our first visit to Sammy's. It was the middle of the afternoon, so we were seated immediately. I tried the Marinated Chicken Taco and the Al Pastor Pork Taco. The Chicken Taco was great, but the Al Pastor Pork Taco was exceptionally good. My husband had the Steak Enchiladas and said they were delicious. Staff was attentive and friendly. We live out of state, and if we are ever in the area again, we'll definitely go back!

Kyle K.

Yelp
NEVER AGAIN!!! I've went to Sammy's several times. Food ok, little pricey, but different selections on menu than some other local spots. First ever visit they forgot 1/2 my order and I had to drive back. So all and all not the greatest place and should've learned from day one. Just last night I ordered pick up and no sooner I walked out the door to go and there was an instant heavy blizzard coming down hard and fast. After a quarter of the way I had to turn back with my car sliding off the road and traffic horrible and weather conditions not safe. I called and apologized letting them know I was having to cancel my order. They refused to refund me and even claimed my order was ready in which was still 20 minutes until pick up time. Regardless the weather conditions and the fact I wasn't getting my food was enough reason to do the right thing. I'll never order from here again and my bank is refunding me when it posts officially to my account. Clearly this place is poorly ran and they don't care about their customers. Debating on contacting better business bureau.

Yelp
I ordered a steak burrito. The food came out quick but it was cold and the amount of steak on it was a joke.

T J.

Yelp
Had delivery and it was good! Tampiqueña was juicy - seasoned well too. I asked for medium rare and it was definitely medium, but still good - tender. Rice and beans were decent. Cheese enchilada decent. Big portions.

Yelp
The drinks, service, and food are 10/10. Especially the margaritas!! I absolutely love this place.

Yelp
Truly enjoy Sammy's . I've been here 4 times and the staff and food have been great. Probably the best casual Mexican restaurant in the Western burbs. Always an enjoyable experience. Try them

Yelp
Had the lomo and fish tacos which were very tasty and reasonably priced. Service was good and ambiance was perfect as in the music wasn't blasting where you can have a decent conversation.

Yelp
This review is long overdue! I took my mom here for her 68th birthday in September; she loved everything about it. It wasn't crowded on a Saturday afternoon. The chips & salsa appetizer and drinks ( we had margaritas) were so good the bartender (Angel) stopped by our table so she could sing his praises, and he made a house mix to go for her! Our server Martin, was so easygoing and personable! The entire staff was great. Our entrees were delicious, fresh, and so filling! I had casually mentioned we were celebrating mom's birthday as we placed our orders, and they surprised her with a mariachi-style happy birthday that really made her night! She's STILL talking about this day and how she can't wait to return. Her favorite food in a great atmosphere with wonderful service... no complaints!

Linda L.

Yelp
Service was okay, margarita barely had any tequila in it i could probably drink 4 and still not feel anything. One positive is that our tacos came out quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
The wife and I Stopped in for some dinner and drinks. Angle was the bartender and the service was very good the margaritas were also very good. We ordered tortilla soup and a burrito, both were very good. All in all, a great experience. The ambience was very nice. I would most definitely come back.

Yelp
Restaurant review On my recent trip up north, I was craving good mexican food and I saw someone write about the parrillada which seems like a great variety dish, but on arriving my dining partner decided that he did not want that so I switched over to a combo fajita platter. I was surprised by the quality of the food. The shrimp were jumbo size, steak was not chewy, and the chicken was very moist. This also came with a healthy helping of refried beans, rice, pico de gallo, sour cream, and guac. Overall the food was quite impressive. The only downside was our waiter was not too friendly and there was a moderate wait for the food. Overall I will be back to try some of there other food items as well! Pros: fresh quality ingredients (no micro shrimps), large menu, ample seating Cons: server was not friendly Hidden deals: Groupon has cash back at this restaurant if you register your credit card, but they recently changed to a voucher deal.

Yelp
Found the dish that I have been craving right here! Th menu has so many delectable items that I ordered a grilled pineapple margarita and a white queso with chorizo so that we could decide. So glad we took our time. We found this fantastic dish under grilled items. In the bowl you will find prawns, shrimp, chorizo, pork, steak, chicken, cactus, jalapenos, grilled onnion bulbs, grilled onion, green pepper, and a cheese sauce that has a heavy portion of ground beef. Warm corn or flour tortillas, both are warm and perfect texture. Halfway through it was time for a mango habenero margarita. We sat outside while it rained. The deck area is tented and decorated so sweet. A wonderful Sunday afternoon. We did not need the appetizer, which was enough for 4 people. The dinner can be ordered for 4. If you are a lover of meats, this is the dish. So many other items look great, such as soup! Highly recommend .

Yelp
I love this place! Food is great and our server Angel was the fricken best! 12/10 would recommend!!

Yelp
The food was tasty and the service was good. We were there around 2:30 pm so it was quieter than expected for a bar, but the drinks and the food were yummy. We will be coming back

Yelp
Decided to try out a new Mexican restaurant and Sammy's wasn't too bad! I think there is room for improvement, but I would order from here again. First, we had the chihuahua nachos with shredded chicken. The chicken had excellent flavor. The nachos were a little soggy, but I think that's because we ordered delivery. All the ingredients on the nachos were fantastic. I ordered vegetarian tacos with cilantro and onion, and was a little disappointed. First, the "veggies" were just a couple of pieces of yellow and green peppers. I was hoping for at least some mushrooms and maybe a poblano pepper as well. The veggies weren't seasoned and had little to no flavor. To make up for that, the tacos were COVERED in cilantro and onion. Don't get me wrong, I love those two ingredients, but the amount of cilantro/onion compared to the three pieces of peppers was too overpowering. My fiancé ordered the steak chimichanga, pulled pork taco, and ribeye taco. He said everything had a great flavor, especially the pulled pork. We will order from here again, but I wouldn't get veggie tacos. For the future, I'd recommend adding another vegetable in there and seasoning with something (even just some spices!)

Kevo D.

Yelp
My boy Angel great server and bartender! highly recommend and the food is also always a hit! Food is always served pretty quick also one of my favorite spots to eat and drink at

Milton M.

Yelp
Good food nice people love to come here and eat nice atmosphere they have an outdoor patio.

Bev S.

Yelp
Hello this is my favorite spot to come when I come back from az to see my family my sons and I come great food but noticed the quality of margaritas went down they infuse them with fruit and raised the price but felt like there was no tequila in them . Service is great . They need to step up the great tases on some food and drink tacos were not as full as before I don't mind paying a dollar or two more just step up the quality.

Ivette M.

Yelp
The hostess, server, drinks and food were excellent and the ambiance and music was the perfect setting. Martin was our server and his attention to detail was immaculate! Win-win all the way!!!

Yelp
I been coming here for a while but I always forget to write a review. The place is nice inside and clean. The staff are great people. My favorite thing to get here are the Alambre tacos which have skirt steak, chorizo, bacon, onions, bell pepper and a cilantro lime oil and the taste is incredible and something I recently tried is the red chipotle sauce which I don't like but I was like why not let me try it on the taco and wow the flavor of the tacos is just a big bang of great taste. My second favorite is the No manches taco with the pico de gallo but I rather get it it with onion and cilantro only and the taste of the pork loin is amazing your going to forget about birra. The green enchiladas dinner is okay not my favorite but my son likes them. The reason im not big on them is because they use like tinga chicken to make the enchiladas. The mix fajitas are amazing with steak and shrimp I pass on the chicken and get extra shrimp. You get a huge plate with big shrimp and skirt steak cut none of that cheap fatty meat. You get a second plate for all your toppings like guacamole and your beans rice etc. The coctel de camaron is very good as well and sometimes it hard to choose just one entry. My son orders the traditional burrito steak with just beans and cheese and Sammy's don't cheap out and give him a skinny burrito it comes out with a lot of meat and beans and cheese. So far one of my favorite places to have a Mexican style dinner. Also they have a lot of great mix drinks

Yelp
By far, the worst dining experience we have ever had due to poor management. Upon arrival, my wife and I informed the "hostess" (I put it in quotes because she was also serving, bartering, and mopping floors) we needed a seat for two and our baby who would stay in the stroller. There were multiple seats open, yet this woman proceeded to tell us to wait and helped to seat the couple who came in behind us. After being seated, it took our server quite a while to asks us what we wanted to drink. He was very nice and we understood the situation of the restaurant being busy. We are also very mindful that people working service jobs are due a little more respect post-Covid with everything they have been through. In observing why it was taking so long, we began to notice that servers were running from table to table just to keep up with demand. At least 10 groups left from their tables or hostess stand because they were being ignored. Wait staff was not only trying to serve, but bussing tables, making drinks, and seating guests. It was an absolute cluster of an operation. In the end, it took about an hour and a half for my wife and I to get our meal (two tacos each) which we had to tell them to put into to-go containers because we needed to get home so my wife could feed our daughter. I witnessed other customers pay with cash and leave because they were being ignored. I spoke with the manager and from our conversation he is lacking experience. The place had decent food and drinks, but we will no longer support this establishment because of how poorly it was managed.

Yelp
Had dinner here tonight, and it was mediocre meal. First of all what's with the plastic utensils, and plastic cups for water? Were dining in a restaurant not going for a picnic. The dinner menu isn't cheap at all. So put your act together. Start off with chips & salsa. The salsa was very bland- to the core, the pickled carrots needs some touch up. More vinegar & sugar!!! Second appetizer was corn with sour cream, with a dash of fruit seasoning- is awful. Menu entry was grilled carne asada. By far that's the best in my dinner tonight. Very flavorful, the downfall was steak is too small, the rice & beans did not really stand out. The refried beans taste like it came from a can. The green tomatillo sauce & hot sauce stand out too. First time here tonight, not impress at all, and will never ever come back. Overall it's a 1 out of 5 restaurant. I never understood why people rave their food, I just happened to have sophisticated palate, and outrageous taste buds.

Yelp
Sammy's parking lot always full when we go by, thought we'd try for dinner. It was OK. Maybe better for drinks and apps. There was lively crowd leaving when we got there. I found their salsa with the chips kind of bland. I judge a new Mexican joint by their fajitas- I love fajitas. Here I had the "puebla" version, seemingly house specialty. Enormous plate, but mostly peppers and onions and too greasy. Husband had taco plate special and was happy. Service was OK. A weird thing, an employee wanted to take our picture for a Facebook post. Never experienced that before. Declined. I still like a few other local spots better, think we're one and done here.

Yelp
Best Mexican restaurant in the suburbs. Strongly recommend the margaritas. Pineapple or horchata. Great service!

Yelp
There are so many things on the menu I could recommend. I love the Tortilla soup, I would still order it on a 90 degree day. My bf loves the Habanero sauce so if you're someone that can handle some heat, it's great with tacos.

Yelp
Came here on the recommendation of a friend, who loved the Elgin location. (This was place was closer to home) Ordered the carne asada and it was EXCELLENT - deliciously seasoned and cooked to perfection! A friend ordered the red mole and it, too, was terrific! If you're seeking an extensive Mexican menu in the suburbs with authentic food and friendly service, I highly recommend this Sammy's!
