Southern Nevada Health District closes five restaurants - Eater Vegas

"The health department closed Sammy’s Doghouse, perhaps better known as Sammy’s L.A. Pastrami & Burgers at 2191 E. Tropicana Ave., after the restaurant failed a re-inspection on Sept. 26. Inspectors issued the restaurant a 31-demerit C grade on Aug. 28. During the re-inspection, the health department found cockroaches, expired food such as 11-day old cooked pulled pork and chipotle chili sauce, as well as 10-day old buttermilk ranch prepared in house. The restaurant had water dripping on loosely covered food, mold in the water tray and ice tray, and food debris in the freezers and on the floor. The restaurant remains closed. The health department closed the restaurant in 2015 as well." - Susan Stapleton

Outside of my Bloody Mary not matching the description everything was pretty good. Quick seating, attentive staff, quality food and a laid back atmosphere. All in all a good experience and I'd definitely eat here again.

Google
What a great airport breakfast find!! They have a variety of breakfast plates and pizza at breakfast time. We had eggs to order with sausage hash browns and toast and a four-cheese pizza. Hot, fresh and delicious!! The staff is friendly and checks to be sure we have a great meal.

We stopped in here for pizza while waiting for our flight. The restaurant was busy but they got us seated very quickly. The waitress was nice and friendly and quickly took our order. We both ordered a New York Style Pizza which was more than enough for one person. The pizza was delicious and loaded with toppings and the crust was perfectly cooked. The pizza came out very quickly and we had plenty of time to eat the pizza before boarding our flight. We had to request a to-go since we both couldn't finish it all. Overall we had a great dinning experience.

While waiting on my flight, I decided to have breakfast at this place. Been here before and had the pizza. Ok, fine. What WASN'T fine was the potatoes that accompanied the steak & eggs I ordered. They were cold...as if they'd never seen/touched heat. How on earth does a PUBLIC establishment in an airport, no less, serve cold food??? The substitute potatoes weren't much better as far as taste goes. As you can see, they were barely eaten. My host, Alex, was pleasant. I asked to speak to the Mgr, and she reduced my bill by $6. Even though that only took off the price of the orange juice I ordered, something's better than nothing, considering.. Can't say I'll revisit this place should I be in Terminal D again. For anyone reading this, ALWAYS check your food before eating it AND never settle for anything less than what you paid for.

The salad was really good, and the lady served me was extremely nice and attentive, definitely will go back if I need to grab some food when traveling in Vegas.

Google
Decent food and good service, with a okay ambiance for an airport restaurant. However, what’s completely unacceptable is their false advertising. They claim to serve “Kobe beef burgers,” which is impossible—real Kobe beef would easily cost over $100 and now way this restaurant can work with Real Kobe beef . If they’re misleading customers about this, what else on the menu might be questionable? That said, the food I ordered was good. I had a pizza with organic pepperoni—but now I can’t help but wonder… was it truly organic, or just as fake as the Kobe?

Google
Food is 3 star (small size, about 10 inch i think) but the service we received was 0. Belinda was our server, she had zero responsibilities and inappropriate attitude. We asked for ice for our ice, she never came back with ice. We waited 10 minutes to get the check. Not busy day, she just wanted to stand somewhere and talk to her colleague over the desk.

Super delicious. Great service. Ubaldo was awesome. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Wife had a craving for pizza a few days ago, and I'd been thinking about it ever since. While waiting for our flight back to Toronto at LAS, we saw Sammy's and decided to quench that pizza thirst. Despite being pretty busy, we were seated in less than a minute, with the hostess responding, "Of course!" when I asked for specific seating because of a back issue. We had our drink orders in within another minute, and my wife's ginger ale was served almost immediately, with the server telling me that my draft beer was being poured; it was out 30 seconds later and our food orders were taken. My wife ordered the Hawaiian pizza, I ordered New York style, and they came out after a short wait. Both pizzas, from the wood-fired crust to the delicious toppings and sauce, were at another level; i had to stop myself from eating the whole thing. Our server brought out a box for leftovers (which made it through customs) and gave us the bill, which was very reasonable considering Vegas and Airport. Had a kind word with the manager on the way out, and was pleased to have the pleasure of having the General Manager of Sammy's on hand to witness it. We will absolutely eat here again when the opportunity arises!

Yelp
Choose this one! The chicken Caesar salad is so good and HUGE! The fries with the chipotle aioli are AMAZING! The pizza came out piping hot and husband said was excellent. Marlena was quick, friendly and helpful in choosing what to get.

Yelp
This is for Sammy's in concourse D. We ordered a margarita pizza. With low expectations, given the kind of quality one typically gets at our airports. But they were able to surprise us (as the Wallstreet analysts say: Surprise to the downside". Total garbage, quality, freshness off the chart on the lower end. 3 people didn't even finish a small sized pizza, it was that bad. Service slow and average. Nothing on the menu if you want to eat healthy. No alternative to dairy for coffee. No healthy options.

Yelp
Kudos to our server Zamira and uncle that was there that night We went there 2 nights in a row for their lobster bisque it my favorite. Even the sliders were good. Service is great everyone was friendly and nice. The ambiance I mean it's an airport restaurant gets a little chaotic but we were greeted by the host and was sat down right away then asked for our drink then menu. The area is well kept it was clean.

Yelp
Sparkling Guva margarita! I was expecting with sugar around the glass or at least salt with some lime but unfortunately my drink didn't had it..:( But other than that I did enjoy the flavor of it. The service was ok but could be better for the money you're spending there.

Yelp
Awesome service super nice spot to enjoy a beer and a pizza prior to boarding your plane! Next time I am definitely ordering the Parm Fries they looked so good when delivered to the table next to me. My pizza was delicious and cooked perfectly. It was more than I could finish so they happily gave me a to go box and I finished the rest on my 4 hour flight.

Yelp
Service was great. Our server was friendly, warm, helpful and attentive. One of the more pleasant airport food experiences I've had in quite some time. The pizza is all that was available when ww were seated at 9:30 pm. It arrived quickly and was pretty decent. I'm not sure what Dave Portnoy would say but I'd eat there again. We had a margarita and a bbq chicken. Both were tasty. The tomatoes on the margarita were a bit mealy and not very flavorful, but it lad lots of cheese and basil. It was also a garlic sauce rather than a tomato sauce base. That was a nice variation. We had two beers which could've been a little colder but again, overall a positive experience.

Yelp
Waitress who was lovely, recommended the sea bass because I wanted something healthy. She was right on. Delicious, fresh, on top of a sautéed salad. Great service and nice atmosphere. I'll be back

Yelp
Blah blah blah blah blah airport food correct? In the mood for pizza and at the airport came across Sammy's wood fired pizza and grill, so gave it a shot. Like a lot of us we love the idea of "woodfired" pizza. I ordered the margarita with mushrooms. The pizza came out pretty quick and hot. It's not too big not too small. The best part about the pizza was probably the freshness of the cheese and the amount of it. The sauce was OK, the crust is OK, the mushrooms were quite frankly, just mushrooms. Super nice server Tim. Slightly above your average airport food.

Yelp
I love going to Sammy's for happy hour. It's right around the corner from home. The food is delicious. Love the choices they have for happy hour. The service is always great. It has a chill vibe.

Yelp
Never any expectations for an airport restaurant and Sammy's is a fine place to grab a meal before you hit the air. Pretty quiet place, nice staff and clean place. I had the Hawaiian wood fired pizza and it was good. Came out quick and hot and cooked well. Would recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a hit or miss. I believe it to be over priced and the wait is *ALWAYS long. The pizza's are okay. It's a "try it" to see if you like it kind of place.

Yelp
At the Vegas airport I knew I was hungry but I didn't know what I wanted to eat. Figuring a sit down restaurant option was best, I decided Sammy's would be a safe bet. It was and it wasn't. Basically the menu is VERY limited. They have some pizza, two salads, soup, and French fries. I was hoping for more choices but decided since I'd already sat down to just get a cheese pizza and a beer with Camilla and Cat Collins. The pizza was large enough for me to get two meals out of, and the beer selection had a yummy Tanger IPA. I'm white trash and like to dip my pizza in ranch.., much to my disappointment they were out. Service was good, and all in all it wasn't the worst choice I've made in Vegas...

Yelp
currently in vegas, having a mimosas w my man, omw to the boston celtics game, i wanted to try this place out... we sat @ the bar drinking mimosas (2 bottles deep) we are litty and the vibe is chill.. customer service amazing & spicy italian pizza ‍ fire. overall everything was great.

Yelp
I've said it before; at the airport, you are captive audience. This location was really good! Of course, we were in the airport, waiting for our flight home. We walked around and found Sammy's. Glad we did! We came just before the lunch rush which allowed us to be seated quickly. Menus are available via QR code on the table. Our server was super friendly! They have a good selection of beer on tap and wine as well. For food I went with the Kobe Beef Sliders and my wife went with the Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad. The burgers were really good! And I have to say, the salad really good! Some of the freshest lettuce we've had at a restaurant. Nice job! So overall, this was a really good experience. As mentioned, limited choices at the airport and this one was really good.

Yelp
I think that restaurants in airports are a bit tricky, especially those that have a presence outside of the airport. I am a big fan of Sammy's in Vegas, so I had to lower my expectations a little bit when I stopped by Sammy's in the D Terminal at LAS. Well.. I was pleasantly surprised! The Pizza was very similar to the Pizza that Sammy's serves at its non-airport restaurants. The Beer was yummy, and the Bartender (Keith I believe) was a ray of sunshine in the Airport. Sammy's at D Terminal is my new go to for Departure Day Travel!

Yelp
I would avoid this place like the plague. I get there at 9:35. They quit serving breakfast at 9:30. I get it. But all I wanted was a plain English muffin. No we can't do that. Oven is empty. It's insipid. Have a little common sense.

Yelp
Wood fire pizza - it's pretty good at this restaurant. Make sure you try the chicken bbq pizza. It has a different taste than you're used to. Service is above par as well. So you can't go wrong.

Yelp
strong enough drink. slow service. 23 bucks so drink should have been stronger. . the bartender was really nice to me, so was the host. so i know the slow service is due to lack of staff + its in the airport.

Yelp
It feels really strange to get a four star review to an airport, bar and Grill, but this one definitely earned it. When I first got seated right away and , I noticed that most of the seating has a really bright light over it, and after a very long day, and a long layover at the Las Vegas airport, I was not looking for the spotlight to be on me. However, I chose one of the bench seats, and I began my order. You can order in person with the staff or through the app on your phone by scanning the card on the table. I had ordered some thing they no longer had so I backed out of the app and ordered in person. I ordered the mini cheeseburgers with Gorgonzola and coleslaw. I had ordered the English some thing or other drink. They were out of it so she gave me a pomegranate lemonade that I would skip because it tasted like Kool-Aid. I didn't even remember that. I remembered the flavor of kool-Aid until I drink it. I left the majority of it untouched. Having said that, I will have to say that the cheeseburgers, the french fries, and the coleslaw were delicious. They were the best version of what I expected for each of them. I had actually ordered just the coleslaw, but since they gave me fries, they brought me the coleslaw that I had ordered also. The waitress was attentive and friendly. I wish I had gotten her name because I would mention her here. They also have pizza, several different kinds, but not very many vegetables apparently, and people seemed very happy with their pizza. If you make it to the D gate at the Las Vegas airport, or you have time before your flight or during a layover, you should visit this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
I could only speak on my experience and the food I tried. The staff was all super friendly. It was busy so I was seated at the bar, which was on since the space between people was decent. I had their chicken chopped salad and it was surprisingly very tasty. The chicken was seasoned and cooked perfectly and the salad was mixed and chopped really well. The olives gave it a taste of salt that it needed and the rest of the ingredients worked very well together. The staff again was very attentive and it did take longer than I expected for a salad but again their were busy. Would definitely recommend if you're hungry and have time to sit.

Yelp
Had a very decent meal at the airport for our return trip home for New York in the "D" gates at McCarren in Las Vegas. Service was quick and friendly and the food was surprisingly good and flavorful. The Lobster Bisque was good with some chunks of lobster but nothing stellar. A little smooth rather than gritty ( if you love bisque, you'll get it). The Kobe sliders were really very good and the side of the French fries provided were plentiful and crispy and flavorful. Caesar salad was good-tasting but looked a little weak and wilty but surprising did not affect the taste. A little shy in the croutons department as well but overall, adding chicken made for a good and healthy meal. For sure would return while at the airport and waiting to get home.

Yelp
I give it 4 stars for airport dining. We had breakfast and this place was one of the few places we could eat a hot breakfast sitting down with some coffee. Coffee was watered down so it wasn't good but we had pancakes, eggs, potatoes, bacon and sausage. Their Bloody Mary was super good and we were quite impressed with it. Potatoes came out hot and just right and service was great. All for a pretty reasonable airport dining price. Lot of folks were eating pizza at 8am so will be trying pizza next time I'm here.

Darilyn L.

Yelp
Had breakfast and bloody morning at 5 am on our way to Los Cabos. Susan was our server. She was great! . Just wish I didn't forget my water flask. Sentimental gift. Maybe I will call and check.

Yelp
Two of us ate breakfast here today before a flight. Fast seating and fast service. The breakfast combo was delicious but they would not serve the eggs sunny side up. They did not have sugar free syrup for pancakes. No wheat or rye bread only white toast bread. Before 10:30am only pizza and breakfast served. I recommend this nice sit down restaurant for pre-flight breakfast's. Located in the D concourse gates near gate D5. Near American Airlines.

Yelp
Good place in the airport to grab a bite to eat. Staff worked hard toward turning the tables over to seat those waiting. Good bear selection. Pizza, salad, and sliders are primary menu. Pizza very good.
google avatar

Yelp
I swear Sammy's at Las Vegas airport is the happiest place on earth today. This lady Annette was so nice and asked me if I was from Chicago (she saw my Bears shirt and purse). Chat chat chat yak yak yak. SOO NICE. Isn't she cute? The server (ugh forgot his name) was very appreciative and fast. The breakfast was very good. Scrambled eggs and potatoes came out in five minutes. Bloody Mary was awesome. This place was a very upbeat place for 6am. I really appreciated the service.
google avatar

Yelp
Our experience here today was pleasant and fast. The staff here are very friendly and are in really good moods all the way. We saw someone leave their table with only $60 and their was tab $80. They still didn't let that ruin their day. Our waitress was attentive to us and sat us down very quickly. Our food was prepped in 5-10 minutes. It definitely wasn't greasy at all. The bacon was phenomenally flavored. I didn't like sausage too much. It was too salty for me. Our bloody Mary's were on point. Not too strong or full of just tomato juice. Our waitress went above and beyond! She asks if I was veteran due to my USAA Visa. I let her know that I was and she said I went ahead and put a veterans discount for me on my tab. That was really awesome! She said to ask in the future because Sammy's takes care of military veterans! It's a great stop to grab a quick drink a bite to eat on your way out of the Vegas.

Yelp
You have to use your smartphone to be put on a waitlist to be seated. Regrets, that's all I have to say. We came here thinking that the food would be better than the burger king or the sandwich place... boy were we wrong. We got the bbq chicken pizza and the Hawaiian pizza. The Bbq chicken pizza barely had any meat and it was just bleh. As for the Hawaiian pizza, I've never seen a pizza like this, the whole time you are just tasting pineapple. It doesn't even taste like it was made in a wooden oven. Overall, I would NOT recommend it for how much you pay.
google avatar

Yelp
The girl working tonight was horrible at her job and constantly just talking and laughing with the kitchen staff and pretty sure she gave our order to someone else and then had to remake our food.
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
Maybe more like 3.5 stars. I like this place because you can sit down and order, relax and wait for your flight while you enjoy a meal or beverage. Breakfast & Pizza ONLY prior to 1030a AM. I had the classic NY style pizza which was good. I had great service from Anne, she was nice and professional and kept the refills coming.

John B.

Yelp
Just went here. At the airport. Said it's open until midnight. Got there at 11:20. Said we are no longer seating at damn 11:20. We told them we only intend to order a drink each (3 ppl total) and fries. They are literally too lazy to seat people for such a simple order 40 minutes before closing. Do society a favor and don't tip these fucks when going there.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
It was just ok. I arrived at the airport early because I'm neurotic and absolutely must sit there for 2 hours or fear that I will miss my flight. I had about an hour and a half of time to spare so I decided to sit and get pizza. It was a bit of a wait, but the waitress warned me before seating me that I should have time. I agreed as I had about an hour and a half till my flight. The place was not busy but still the waitresses seemed overwhelmed. I realized I wouldn't see my waitress too often so I ordered a coke and a margarita pizza. In the time it took to get my first soda two people sat down and got up because they had run out of a topping or did t have a topping they wanted, I.e the bbq chicken for the bbq chicken pizza. They seemed very attentive to the pilots but could care less about the guests coming through. The pizzas tasted like little ceasars pizza, of which I am not a fan, but if you are it's basically an overpriced version of that. I don't mind paying the airport prices, but how can you really mess up pizza. In as big of an airport as mccarren I will try another place next time I come through there.
google avatar

Erik S.

Yelp
Monica was awesome on service. Very friendly and professional. The hostess was also great. Nice to experience this at an airport. Thanks!

Anita C.

Yelp
Salad was terrible , asked the waitress for extra dressing and the bread that comes with it . Another girl stepped up and brought it finally . She dropped off food and didn't come back to fill our ice teas, $26 for a salad, I expected more .
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
1) Wait to get a seat. But that's to be expected with so many travelers. 2) There little scan the menu and place your order thing wasn't working. Which was pretty annoying. I had to move to the bar once a seat opened up to get any service. 3) The bartender took my drink order and never asked about anything again. No asks about food or another drink. He was too busy not wearing his mask over his nose and talking with a customer about not getting vaccinated. (Didn't get his name, but he had gray hair and a two teardrop tattoo on his face.) 3) Unrelated to the restaurant, but a sign of what to expect from travelers... The guy next to me was bragging about having had 3 different COVID strains, talking about the benefits of not being able to taste or smell, and going off about not getting vaccinated and relying on organic honey. He also talked about how he always got sick after visiting Vegas. Gee, I wonder why. 4) The food options are just two salads and three different pizzas. And the pizzas are pretty big (too big for one person.) So while I normally love their food at their other locations, you won't get that here. And the staff are pretty bad. Also, I never saw the bar area get sanitized.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Considering that we are in an airport, the food is really good. Make sure that you have time if you order a pizza as it is grilled to order. I had the margarita pizza and it was good. Don't get the garlic butter unless you really like garlic!
google avatar

Luba T.

Yelp
Pizzas were absolutely delicious! Great service, quick even. Didn't have to wait too long for our pizza. We shared New York style and a margarita pizza. Cold beers between the four of us, waiting at the airport later in the evening! Clean, friendly and well lit. Sports on tv! We enjoyed it. Waitress Sabrina was very attentive!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Needing a quick snack after a crappy and small lunch, we wanted to split a cheese pizza. Except that they don't sell cheese pizzas, so we ordered a pepperoni pizza without the pepperoni. We ended up waiting around 15 mins for it, but the order was correct, and it was good too. I'm not sure how they cut it how they did. I guess it was technically six pieces, but they weren't anywhere close to the same size. Oh well. The pizza hit the spot.
google avatar

Seo H.

Yelp
I don't drink hot coffee. Asked if they had iced or not and she said she would make it for me. Came out with hot coffee gave us the food and never checked up on us at all. The food is nothing good or unique. I would never go here again.
google avatar

Greg J.

Yelp
Delicious pizza with amazing sauce and the salad was tossed lightly in a vinaigrette and was so good. Service was friendly. Definitely not your usual stale airport food.
google avatar

Dennis L.

Yelp
I ordered a hawaiian pizza. I can't say anything too bad, but it was strange as it was whole slices of canadian bacon, like the packaged type for sandwiches, and slices of pineapple the full circumference of the fruit. It looked like someone making a hawaiian pizza after having one been described to them once, but never having actually seen a pizza. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't visually appealing. The salad is massive and expensive. The chicken on top wasn't too bad. Dressing was okay. It's an entire bag of lettuce from the market thrown on a plate.
google avatar

Leslie S.

Yelp
It has little to do with Sammy's Woodfired Pizza And Grill, but of course smart people will pack their own lunch, dinner or breakfast when travelling through an airport. Past that, this place was good for an airport. They do not really have a grill, but the pizza was decent and oven-baked and a cut above most pizza including the ones in the city. Its size was somewhere between a small and a medium, but was adequately filling and cost $18. They pizza actually had crunch and taste and a decent topping. I ordered the New York, which was meat-centric with a slight kick and was pleasantly surprised by the form and crunch not resembling fast food junk. The down sides were the pizza is slow and for those with less than 30 minutes to spare the burgers or something else is a better option. The waitresses were busy too and were slow to take orders, although to be fair they want you to scan one of those lame QR codes to view the menu. I preferred a good old fashioned paper menu. Bottled drinks are picked up by the diner next door, but I had tap water personally. Enjoy the pizza if there is time to spare only, but if there is a queue outside and the waitresses are busy and the pizza takes time to arrive at the table think ahead and skip it.
google avatar

Jeremy T.

Yelp
I stopped in at this airport location on my trip back to Houston. Little did I know this is a local place with 2 other locations in the city. Thankfully there was one table left when I arrived and I was seated right away. Their menu was extremely simple and I wish they had just a few other options. I tried the pepperoni and the Hawaiian. Both are delicious. I do love wood-fired pizza places and this one is great too. The sizes of the pizzas are perfect for an airport location and reasonably priced. Service was fairly easy here too, just wasn't used to the contact-free system where you basically do everything on your phone, except ordering the drinks.
google avatar

Kathryn S.

Yelp
It was cozy to sit and eat but the Hawaiian pizza I got wasn't tasty at all. Immediately wished I had gotten a salad. I also got the strawberry mint lemonade with alcohol and it was a 7.5-8/10. Eat somewhere else.
google avatar

Jeremy B.

Yelp
I would like to review the food but I never got the chance. We were sat down and then ignored. The people who were seated next to us well after we had arrived had their orders taken. It's always nice to hear the wait staff argue about whose area we are in. I would understand if the place was packed but it wasn't. Avoid staff not friendly

Yelp
THANKS A LOT FOR MAKE ME A TOURIST BEFORE I LEFT VEGAS!! We order a couple beers before take off.. Bartender say $12 ...DOLLARS EACH .. Him seems over well we never got a recive we pay with a CC we left a tip .. Just to found out the next day I was charged more than the final total... Not to much .. But out a principal. This is F WRONG...

Yelp
I do not recommend the Italian sausage pizza. Waited about 25 minutes for it too. Waitress was awesome though.

Yelp
this shi nasty all. i wouldn't even bother if i was you. below average pizza. I went in with no expectations and was still disappointed :/

Yelp
Just awful. Go somewhere else! I'm a longtime customer of their other restaurants around Vegas, but this airport location is terrible. The digital menu doesn't contain any real descriptions of the items, and it does not even have all items they offer. My chopped salad was pale in color and had unseasoned, dry chicken in it. I really hope the Sammy's management sees this review. It's sad that they would allow this to happen.
