How the Twitter Tax Break Affected Restaurants in San Francisco’s Mid-Market | Eater SF

"Operating since 2006, Sam’s Diner reports that homelessness in Mid-Market has increased, with many homeless congregating near City Hall and deterring tourist business because visitors are afraid to come into the area." - Carolyn Alburger

Google
I googled a breakfast spot and they came up. But when i saw the review pics I knew I needed a burger I ordered the bacon cheese burger and a chili cheese dog with onion rings and a Diet Coke lol for balance. The pic is enough lol soooo good. Couldn’t even stop. Sooo homey and comfortable. They treat u well and know their regulars. OG dinner vibes are 10/10.

Came here after reading about this place having the “best burger in Texas”. Lived up to its fame. Everyone seemed to know each other. Has a small town diner feel and you feel hungry just walking in the door. Food came fast, and man was it tasty. My wife and I split the All Day Burger and it was excellent. Our kids got the kids burger and it was a good size for the price. The sweet potato fries were cooked fresh and were hot and crispy. We will be back to try their shakes and more of their burgers.

Google
One of Houston best kept secrets! Im not a huge burger person at all but when I get that craving I only come here. The sweet lady at the front always has a smile and its been the same cook since I was in high-school. There is a wait but definitely worth the delicious burgers I hope this place stays open forever!!! 🫶🏻

Google
Burger was ok albeit the buns could've been better. I was definitely disappointed in both the fries and onion rings as they tasted like generic frozen ones. Prices were a bit high as it came out to about 15/person for a combo which alot of that was due to overpriced soft drinks. The other frustrating thing was the parking as it seemed every other tenant had reserved spots but then. In addition there is a enterprise car rental which took up a ton of spaces meaning we had to park a decent distance away.

Google
I loved this burger. It was loaded with juicy bacon, full of cheese and very tasty. The seasoned fries were great too. I was so full from this lunch that I skipped dinner.

Google
Sams Deli Diner is a comforting and delicious throwback to staple American classics from Burgers and Fries to milkshakes and root beer floats. The cafe pays homage to the many high schools in the area, bringing a sense of community throughout the eating space as patrons share stories of their days roaming the halls. Most of all, the food is excellent with juicy, mouth watering and very filling burgers made to perfection. Best to save some room for desert as the milkshakes are hand spun, made with fresh ingredients and mixed with Blue Bell ice cream. One of my coworkers got a cookies and cream shake which he stated was a great way to end a meal. If you are feeling nostalgic or just looking for a tasty burger to try out in Houston, definitely head to Sam's Deli Diner.

Google
Nice little diner, very nice service. Adults can order the kids burger. Onion rings were well done. Club sandwich can be hot or cold. Iced tea good

Google
The food was very unsavory. The burger was overcooked and bland. The serviec and kitchen crew was older which in a place like this is usually a good thing because they stick with what works and not trendy ideas. However, what they stuck with was a tradition of squeezing all the juice out of the burger patty and serving it dry. The place was very clean but there was construction occurring next door which was unpleasant to listen to. Not next door as you would think but construction was separated by a black tarp like material in the same space. I will not return.

Yelp
Best breakfast food and burger in town. The people that work there treat you like your family.

The Thumbs Critic ..

Yelp
Thumbs Up: This is a neat little diner just past Memorial, heading west on I-10 into the outer provinces. Thumbs Down: Don't expect a classic diner experience with table service. It's an order-at-the-counter setup. Thumbs Down: You also have to pick up your food yourself when it's ready. Neutral: Condiments are located at the pickup counter. Thumbs Up: The employees were polite and professional. Thumbs Down: The hashbrowns weren't traditional at all. They weren't shredded or even the "lazy" style. They tasted like chopped-up french fries that had been griddled. Thumbs Up: The omelets are good, though. Thumbs Down: That said, the food is generally overpriced. I was surprised the omelets didn't come with hashbrowns. Which is something I've come to expect at most diners. Thumbs Up: On the plus side, there's a Starbucks in the same strip mall.

Yelp
The lady who took my order was very sweet. This place has a very old school feel to it. Classic burgers and much more. I got the bacon cheese burger and mushroom Swiss, both were delicious! Price is decent ranging from $12-18, not too expensive. They do have things that are most costly on the menu. If I'm ever in the area and feeling some burgers, I'd come back! The wait time to get your food is approximately 10-12 minutes!

J D.

Yelp
One of the best burgers in Houston! Their breakfast is excellent too. The owners are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet--once Lily hears your name, she'll remember you forever. Such a sweet lady. The burgers and Blue Bell milkshakes are truly some of the best in the city!

Yelp
Today I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with ham and cheese with a side of freshly made fries . This place makes the food as soon as you order it. Love it . This chicken sandwich is a must try . Good size chicken breast to fill you up. Very friendly people who work there . I always enjoy coming here . Restaurant always clean.

Yelp
Great burger, reasonable prices. Shakes are to die for. Family owned and operated. Highly recommended.

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Best burgers in town. Once you try it you'll be hooked. They don't skimp on toppings.

Mary M.

Yelp
Their burgers are the absolute best.. the size of the burgers are still big and have not changed over the years like so many other restaurants. Their French fries are amazing and their shakes are to die for. I eat here very often and it is always consistent. I couldn't love this restaurant more.

John C.

Yelp
Great service great bison burger onion rings are great .delicious!!! A great classic deli/diner.

Yelp
The food was pretty good, the service not so much. The lady taking orders was pleasant, the older gentleman at the grill was not. First time visit with my grandmother, ordered our food and sat down. They called the order name, I go up and it seems to be just one of our entrees, figured no big deal they're splitting it. He calls the name again and I go up and it's both of our entrees, I realize I accidentally grabbed someone else's order and immediately apologize. He takes an extremely bad attitude and starts muttering under his breath and tells me to bring the other burger back. Despite apologizing, he has some choice words and an attitude I couldn't believe an employee would take with a customer. Mistakes happen, that doesn't mean you can treat paying customers poorly. The food was good, but not enough to make up for the poor service.

Yelp
Best breakfast burgers in the land of lands!no but fr the breakfast burgers with scrambled eggs with cheese, sausage patties lettuce ketchup n mayo. You can't go wrong with them.

Yelp
Notice they made the Texas Monthly Top 50 Burgers back in 2009. There were lots of establishments that are still in business that I have eaten at throughout the state. So, I figured it's got to be good. Service is just walk-up order and pick-up nothing fancy. We ordered a regular cheeseburger and a Super Combo. I got a little concern when I picked-up the order and noticed the ketchup was "Members Mark"....Sam's Club generic. As it turned out I would bet my last dollar they only shop at Sam's. The patties tasted like 30 years ago being a poor college student eating Sam's patties. Nothing special and no reason to ever go back.

Ashley Y.

Yelp
best local spot around. staff is so kind and and service is great! got to try the milkshake and honestly any of their burgers. i'll never stop coming here definitely check it out.

Yelp
Went during lunch and was very busy and the place is pretty small. The turkey burger was okay, it was juicy but not taste or sauce just mayo. Once I added ketchup to the turkey burger it was better but I wouldn't get it again. The super burger was very good, but no sauce only mayo on the burgers as well. We got 2 seasoned fries which were very good as well. I got a milk shake because who can get a burger without a milk shake it was so good. I would go back just for the shakes! My friends got a tigers blood snow one and it had a coconut taste to it that I didn't like but there was enough syrup for the entire thing. Overall the place is a good extremely busy and small during lunch with only 3 workers. Everything was fresh and hot when it came out.

Yelp
I've been coming to Sam's since the 1980s. To survive that long you have to have a good product, and they do! Step back in time and enjoy a burger or sandwich from a real Mom and Pop - not some sprawl chain. In fact, I swear it's the same guy cooking the burgers now as then lol. Worth it.
google avatar

Ronni S.

Yelp
Fine for everyday burgers , fries , or Blt - loaded with bacon . Seasoned Fries hot and crunchy .
google avatar

Conner L.

Yelp
Burgers are amazing. Bacon is nice and fresh. Buttered buns were perfect. Cashier was patient waiting for us to order. Definitely get the seasoned fries.

Yelp
Sam's Deli-Diner is a place where people of West Houston want to feel nostalgic for a diner style burgers, fries, and shakes. I have been here many times and each time never disappoints. From the outside it may look like typical corner strip mall food place that serves hamburgers that taste mediocre or those soggy fries. But you will certainly not getting any of those here at Sam's Deli-Diner! As you enter, the place is actually quite big with lots of seating and various local school mascots and school names on their wall. On the counter side, you have your classic and very extensive menu that list all sorts of burgers, hotdogs, breakfast, sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, salad, sides and their beverages and milkshake. If it's your first time there, go for the burger and fries, any of them will do as it all depends what you crave. You can either for here or to-go as there's usually quite a few people who work around this area would come in and grab their lunch to-go, so beware of the possible long line around noon. As I mentioned earlier, the burger is just simply delicious. It gives that oh-so-homey vibe with the juicy patty and the smushed up buns and everything in it goes so well together. The fries are definitely also feel like that comfort food home-cooked feel and just salty enough to make you crave for more. Sam's Deli-Diner has been here for a long time and I wish for it to thrive through the current hardship and be here on the west side for many years more!

Yelp
Great experience and great burgers!!! Love this place and appreciate the friendly service!!!

Yelp
This is one of those greasy spoon diner, fastball-down-the-middle places. It's right off the interstate in an unassuming strip mall. You know the kind of place I mean. The same guy is working behind the counter every time you arrive. He's low-key friendly. Not particularly jolly, but always efficient and attentive. The food is cheap and straightforward, as is the menu. It's quiet, simple, and quick. There are no frills because they aren't necessary. Consequently, it's a great meet up spot. Plenty of seating, privacy even out in the open, and you can linger as long as you'd like. Great for breakfast, not sure about the lunch situation because we never come here in the afternoon.

Yelp
i have been coming here with my family since i was 6 years old -- over 17 years ago! service is fantastic & food is AMAZING. we get the same thing every time & Lilly memorized our order years ago. it truly feels like home when we come here as we are always treated so great. will continue coming here for many more years

Bob R.

Yelp
their food was all absolutely amazing! I could not be happier with the chili cheese burger and lily's shake! Atmosphere was welcoming, and I was served quickly and well so all in all, it was absolutely worth every penny!

Julie G.

Yelp
All the burgers are delicious and the best onion rings!! I order a burger and rings every time

Yelp
Great local restaurant! Definitely on the support local train lately and am loving all the places we've come across. Great price for a solid hamburger! Large! Come hungry... I had to fold on the fries for the following day!
google avatar

Angel T.

Yelp
Best burger spot in Houston in my opinion. The owner is always so nice. Always greeting you with a smile. She even remembered my name. Everything is delicious I usually get the bacon cheese burger, seasoned fries, and a milkshake but my family has gotten the mushroom Swiss burger and the one with chili on it and they say it's amazing. So just go! You have to try this place.
google avatar

Jess T.

Yelp
Muy delicioso hamburguesa Byron! You always rock! Plus, I waved at Pete, Jordan, and my multiversal self Jess Davis's pics today! Just know if y'all need to talk, let's do and get our grub on, but not pig out in the words of the prophet Ice Cube! This was today too! Going back for a spicy omelet and delicious Dr. Pepper because Texas is cool! Texas is protected with some good cops who don't fudge with corruption! BOOM! California and New York cops are CORRUPT!!!!! They stoink in the words of the great Kristian Harloff!

Yelp
Fav neighborhood diner! I have been going to Sam's since I was in high school! Yes very family friendly restaurant! One thing I love about it here is that everything tastes like it is HOME MADE which is even better! The cashier and other employees are so sweet and HOMEY! Please check out this gem :)
google avatar

Olga V.

Yelp
This place is a must go for burgers!! It is definitely recommended! Their burger are made every day! Fresh patties, fresh cut tomatoes, lettuce, and everything else they use. The best combination with the burger are the seasonal fries. If that is not enough their milkshakes are delicious made with Blue Bell ice cream. Definitely is a place that is worth coming. Best thing is a pretty cheap place compared to several burger places I have been to coming to this place since I was crawling. But definitely is a really good burger place!!!!

Yelp
I'm glad this place still open This place makes the best homemade burgers in town‼ Good food and kid friendly what else can you expect Everyone wears their mask and keeps their social distance #SupportLocalBusiness

Turd F.

Yelp
Greasy, juicy, messy, perfect. I've loved this place since it was on the other side of the freeway. Unlike many many other places in the neighborhood, this one still does things the way they did in 1993. The owners are still behind the counter every day. It shows.

Yelp
Sam's Deli has the best Turkey Burgers in Houston! Lily and Byron are the Nicest people you'll ever meet!!

LuRee A.

Yelp
Sam's Deli Dinner was better than we expected. The turkey burger was superb. My other friends had a cheeseburger which he loved and his fries were so crispy. The other friend had the roast beef sandwich which she loved. My next order will be the black bean burger.
google avatar

Crystal H.

Yelp
Great old southern diner. Went for breakfast and reminded me of my grandmother. He's short handed right now but was worth the wait
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
The fried chicken sandwich is way I drive 25 miles for. I've been eating it since 1988, when Sam's Deli was on the other side of the train tracks. There are times my cravings takes over and I need my fixings of a Sam's Deli fried chicken sandwich. It's perfectly breaded and it holds it juices when you bit into it. Most fried chicken sandwiches are dried out. I'm so happy it's still around after these years.
google avatar

Jeremy O.

Yelp
I love this diner. The shakes are awesome, made with real bluebell ice cream!! The spicy fries are great but the burgers don't make the cut!
google avatar

Sherrie L.

Yelp
5 star deli diner. I work close by, so I come for lunch. Food is fresh, serving size great, and made quickly, prices are good, and I'm always greeted by my name ...even if I haven't been in months
google avatar

Yelp
Love the burgers best in town we drive 30 minutes to get there burgers. You won't be disappointed
google avatar

EJ J.

Yelp
Had a cheeseburger and seasoned fries.... it was the best burger and fries I've had probably in 10 years! Classic diner burger and fries! Clean restaurant with friendly staff!!
google avatar

Ashlynn F.

Yelp
Sam's sortof has a cult following with its regulars, and I'm not mad about it. This is diner food, so if you're looking for fancy, move along. But if you're looking for good food, Sam's tastes great. The woman who runs the register is very friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Erin B.

Yelp
It is very obvious that this place is a labor of love for the owner. The ambiance feels like you are in the neighborhood burger spot. Very clean and appreciated how they still enforce social distancing within the building. One thing I did observe is that the cooks did not wear masks or gloves while prepping the food. If these things were updated I would give it 5 stars. Food is made to order so it will take a little while for your order. Don't come if you are on a time crunch.
google avatar

Trey H.

Yelp
Lunch here yesterday was a spur of the moment decision. The promise of Frito pie was the real impetus. So...the diner was okay. Frito pie was...pretty good (nice size portion for the price). Their cheeseburger was...fine (with fries that were fries). The BLT was...average (one tomato slice for the whole sandwich but lots of bacon). Service was appropriately courteous for an order-at-the-counter place. Overall, note exciting in any way. Flavors were not anything that couldn't be found at dozens of other places in town; they served me nothing special enough to make me want to return.

Wes F.

Yelp
I've been going here for years and even before they moved across I-10. Still one of the best burgers in town and the service although short handed is always cordial and spot on. Thank you for maintaining your excellence all these years!!!

Eyeneed A.

Yelp
Nice little spot! Wide variety on the menu and seasoned fries were a hit.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Best classic turkey sandwich, just like mom used to make! The seasoned fries are also so good. You can never go wrong with a burger. Great quick lunch spot in the energy corridor. Come here all the time for my turkey sandwich! They even know me by name and my regular order, super friendly staff.
google avatar

Von K.

Yelp
My old boss John used to eat here. Stop in to enjoy a great burger for lunch. Ever time I'm on this side of town, I try my best to stop by for great bacon cheese burger.

Yelp
On our last and first visit to Sam's my bf noticed they serve breakfast and wanted to give it a try. So on Sunday morning we donned sweats and baseball caps and headed out to Sam's. Oooooo, the excitement! When we walked in, there were a few seniors sitting at the counter. They bantered easily with the fry cooks, hmmm must be regulars. That's a good sign. Sam's has a very limited breakfast menu, but what they offer they do excellently. I ordered the ham, mushroom and cheese omelet, the bf ordered two eggs over easy, bacon and hashbrowns. When placing the order the cashier asked if I wanted my omelet cooked soft or hard, I opted for in between. I also had their house java which was piping hot and very tasty. Our order was called and served on two trays. That is how abundant their plates are. My omelet was stuffed to the gills with ham, mushrooms and cheese, my bf said it looked like a HMC sandwich and the eggs were the bread. Boy-howdy was it tasty even though it didn't look like a typical omelet. As long as it is tasty you can leave the "pretty" out. The bf stated that his over easy eggs were hands down the best he's EVER had in a restaurant. The hash browns are actually french fries that are cooked on the stove, not fried. Different but good, the outside skillet brown and the inside tender. As we ate the place got crowded with families and young couples. Hmmm, seems like they were regulars also as everyone looked like they literally rolled out of bed and threw some clothes on (a few had on their pajamas!). I just love a place where you can do that and not worry about how you look, or care for that matter. Sam's has turned into our favorite neighborhood diner.

Yelp
In our constant quest (some would say obsession) to locate the best burger in the Houston area, one name kept popping up. "Sam's Deli Diner". "You've gotta try Sam's". "I've been going to Sam's Deli for years, it's the best!" I'd never heard of this place two years ago, but now it's on the radar, and it's exactly the type of burger place I love to find: Small, privately owned, and successful for decades. Last weekend found us wandering the rats maze / retail wonderland that is IKEA, and presented the perfect excuse to try this legendary hamburger joint. So zipped down I-10 and pulled up to the nondescript strip center location. Sam's was easy to find, and parking was plentiful on this early weekend afternoon. The place looked clean and inviting, and when we entered we were surprised by the size of the dining room, with a long, linear open kitchen tucked behind a low counter. Clearly, the place does some business, even if it was nearly empty. We placed our order, and waited for the food to arrive. The first attempt at my burger was wrong - I requested "dry, no tomatoes" as is my habit, and what came out was neither dry (it was slathered with mayo) nor tomato-free. This was surprising, since the room was essentially empty. The lack of attention on the part of the cook didn't bode well for the burger, but I returned it to the counter, and waited for the replacement to appear. What came out was perhaps the saddest burger to ever come out of the kitchen from one of Houston's famed burger joints. The grey, overcooked, machine-formed patty was dry and ooze-free. The cheese was slightly melted; more attached to the bun than to the beef. And the tired looking veggies were huddled under the patty, trying their best to avoid the prying eyes of a hungry patron. I bit into the burger, hoping that the flavor would be the saving grace. It wasn't. I've had better burgers at McDonald's, and I didn't finish this one. I've heard uniformly great things about Sam's, and I'm hoping I caught them on an off day. It happens. But one mark of a great restaurant is the ability to always deliver a quality product, and what was served today showed me that it is certainly possible to get a lousy burger at Sam's Deli Diner.
