Not even half a mile from where we stayed at the UpValley Inn is Sam's General Store, a place of breakfast and coffee happiness.
The building was built in 1862 by California's first recognized millionaire, Sam Brannan, who made his fortune from the California Gold Rush and founded the town of Calistoga. Sam's General Store is a cool-looking building with outdoor seating in the courtyard, excellent coffee beverages, and a killer avocado toast breakfast dish.
Given the sleepy, laid-back vibes of Calistoga, finding parking on the street is easy unless you are within walking distance of Sam's. The building owners made sure to build the wooden-plank deck flooring around the large tree that has grown on the property for centuries.
The hip and clean interior produce great morning vibes as you wait to give your order for whatever beverage you seek from their menu and any quick-to-prepare or ready-to-go breakfast items.
Their cafe americano gave me the pep I needed to start my day of wine tasting. They have flaky and buttery croissants, which I enjoyed immensely. I absolutely loved the Everything Avocado Toast with Bacon (everything bagel seasoning on mashed avocado). The bacon was luscious and magical, while the mashed avocado was delectable.
Additionally, Sam's offers an excellent array of danishes, muffins, quiches, and sandwiches in the glass display on the front counter. The tall black shelving houses various wine bottles, snacks, yin yams, and swags like wine glasses. An open beverage refrigerator by the side door to the courtyard offers some beer and hard seltzer options like Bee Knee's by Monkey Wrench, sodas, juice, salads, puddings, and overnight oats.
Sam's is a must-visit if you're visiting Calistoga for a couple of days due to its savory avocado toast, great coffee, and all-around chill vibes.
