Nominally, and normally, I don't drink 'hard' alcohol. However, I'm a fan of things local, things hand made ('crafted') and done with a certain passion to create. San Diego Distillery is all that.
Tucked away in a light industrial complex, it's a small spot that might raise an eyebrow. You might think, 'meh, some guy is a step up from bilge wine'.. You'd be wrong.
My Bride and I came on a Sunday afternoon, on a three day weekend, and stopped in, really just to see what it was all about. We were surprised there actually a good deal of people there - despite the location and the weekend. A small, but well appointed sitting room, and a friendly host. A small, but stout variety of strong spirits, each with their own appointed story, and each with their own intent of imparting in regards of flavor. For a reasonable price, you get your selection of 3 for a flight. Each is explained both in flavor and in how they are crafted.
While enjoying the drink, you'll get a tour of the small, but very detailed operation - essentially, giving out the secrets it would seem.
Not being a spirit drinker, I struggle to say what the cost comparison is for whisky you might find at an adult beverage store, but I'd say comparable, if not even better than comparable, as it's made, truly, by hand, by a family that does it not to get rich, nor to pay the rent, but merely out of a passion to make something unique.
Definitely worth the stop, very San Diego and - very good!
