Mission Square Market is super down to earth, super unassuming, and very small business hole-in-the-wall. Not what I would expect of an all-vegan market but I have a lot of respect for this place!
The day before visiting this place, I visited another San Diego all-vegan market (XMarket) so I couldn't help but compare. While Mission Square Market has that local convenience store vibe, I felt more welcomed here than I did at XMarket which has a more pretentious and bougie-vegan vibe. Not gonna lie, I did rate them 5-stars as well because I sometimes like to have my bougie moments :)
Anyways, back to Mission Square Market. The shop owner welcomed me from behind the register upon entry. When he saw me looking at the deli menu, he walked over to help me. He proceeded to take my order and make my sandwiches while I shopped. Another customer walked in and patiently waited for assistance. That's when I realized, this shop owner was working completely by himself. When he finished making my sandwiches, he rang them up along with my other grocery items and offered to give me $1 off one sandwich as a first-time customer. That other customer sparked a friendly chat with me to let me know that she loves all the sandwiches that the shop owner makes. I really dig the friendliness here!
I bought A LOT of stuff here because I was super impressed with the variety of brands that I've never even heard of. For instance, I bought 5 bags of mushroom jerky from 3 different brands that I'm excited to try. https://bit.ly/32xOAxT
I didn't eat my sandwiches right away because our plan was to visit Mission Square Market before driving back home to LA County. When I took a bite of the Reuben many, many, MANY hours after it was made, I was super impressed! For starters, YUM! Also, the thickness and size of this sandwich was so legit filled with peppered Tofurkey, vegan cheese, sauerkraut, and thousand island dressing. I was super hungry when I dug into this and was only able to eat about 2/3rds of this sandwich. The remaining 3rd was a delicious lunch for the next day. https://bit.ly/33S5kk2
I also ordered an Italiano made with Tofurkey, ham, pepperoni, and green bell peppers. I was in love! Once again, this was a generous size which cut in half made two lunches for the week. https://bit.ly/3AAphrj
$11 for these sandwiches are a great deal! I'm definitely making Mission Square Market a priority stop anytime we're in San Diego!
