The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Walnut Creek | Eater SF

"Ice cream is the thing to get here at San Francisco Creamery, where the ice cream is all made in-house. Splurge on a brownie sundae if you can — or the Kitchen Sink, if you dare — or try the coffee cookie shake and ride that sugar high as long as you can. It’s also the spot for ice cream cakes, in case a special occasion requires a sweet to match." - Dianne de Guzman

Had a positive experience at the San Francisco Creamery in Walnut Creek. Stopped by randomly before seeing a show at the Lesher Center and it was a positive outing. Best known for their ice cream, which was good, I enjoyed the burger and fries and I ordered.

Google
We loved our experience in that restaurant. Waitresses were very helpful to accommodate us. We were looking to have some ice cream on a day yesterday. Perfect place. They have both indoor and outdoor sitting.

Been coming here since I was a kid and it’s always delicious! Celebrated many birthdays, getting my drivers license and more here. Prices have understandably increased, but the quality is consistent and the portion sizes are generous! I like to compare one scoop to the size of a softball haha. Mine and my family’s favorite flavor is the caramel golden Oreo!

The SF Creamery is a local ice cream shop known for its wide variety of flavors and artisanal approach to frozen treats. Their new pizza and beignets are to die for, this is not your ordinary ice cream store!

Google
We had lunch (and ice cream) here for my mother’s birthday and had a wonderful afternoon. The food was tasty, the ice cream was delicious as always, and service was prompt and friendly. They even added a candle for my mom’s sundae — super cute. P.S. I highly recommend the coffee caramel crunch with marshmallow topping!

Google
We saw an advertisement on Fb for their pepperoni pizza with a beautiful Cheese Stretch-Pull- (If you look at the menu online the pizza is not listed, I let the manager know since this was why we came into eat.) WE HAD TO GO & TRY… The PIZZA looked just like the advertisement and it was delicious 10/10. Chocolate malt milkshake was 10/10. We ordered a pup patty for our service animal our dog BRUNO and he was welcomed into the restaurant with no problem. We will visit again soon.

Google
San Francisco Creamery is a must-visit if you’re in the area. Their selection is great, with so many flavors to choose from, and everything we tried was absolutely delicious. I wish I could have tried them all! We ordered the Pecan Praline, which was perfectly sweet, rich, and packed with flavor—it had just the right amount of nuttiness and creaminess. The Strawberry was another standout—fresh, fruity, and tasted just like real strawberries in every bite. My daughter devoured her cone before it could melt. (I may have helped because it was so darn good 😉) From the quality of the ice cream to the cozy atmosphere, this spot was awesome. We enjoyed our ice cream in their outside seating with some perfect weather. They’ve got flavors for everyone, you can’t go wrong here. We’ll definitely be back for more sweet treats!

Yelp
This is my favorite ice cream spot of all time. It's more of an old-school vibe because it's been around for a while. They have a ton of ice cream flavors and sundae options. We ordered the beignet sundae with vanilla ice cream and replace the chocolate sprinkles with rainbow and it was 10/10. Definitely will be trying other sundae options as they have a ton.

Yelp
I came for the ice cream but figured I'd eat something first to soak up the sugar. I ordered the club sandwich with coleslaw, and overall, it was underwhelming. The chicken was dry, the bacon wasn't crisp, and the Texas toast felt a bit heavy for the sandwich. Personally, I prefer a lower bread-to-filling ratio when it comes to clubs. The coleslaw was okay--edible, but too heavy on the mayo for my taste. The black and tan sundae looked absolutely beautiful, but eating it was a bit of a letdown. I'm someone who really enjoys the sauce on a sundae, and both the caramel and fudge were layered underneath the ice cream. I had to scoop everything out just to get to them. The narrow glass also made the whole thing kind of messy. The ice cream itself was fine--not bad, but not especially memorable. Personally, I think Lottie's (also in Walnut Creek) or Loard's Ice Cream in Orinda are both better options. I'm rounding my 2.5 stars up to 3, mostly for presentation and the wide selection of sundaes. But overall, I left disappointed and didn't finish either item.

Yelp
San Francisco Creamery is a community staple. I've been with my partner or friends and have enjoyed each visit. It's like a time capsule to simpler times :') While I haven't gone ALL OUT and ordered their notorious Kitchen Sink, I've been more than happy with the smaller sundaes, scoops, and shakes. Honestly splitting their old fashioned sundaes with 2-3 people was enough for me, props to the folks who can finish their crazier options ^_^;; The one thing I'd note is that the service is inconsistent, sometimes fast and attentive, other times mind-boggling slow. And the shop itself has seen better days, I feel it's always a bit sticky and humid lol (perhaps the natural climate of an ice cream shop???)

Yelp
Stopped by for an ice cream cone on a hot day. Service is excellent. The ice cream is average at best. Didn't seem like it was house made.

Yelp
Good ice cream and excellent staff! We had dinner at Galpao and wanted ice cream so we headed around the corner and fiund this place. The name intrigued us as we are avid Mitchell's ice cream goers in SF - the best ice cream in the world! We stopped in and got in the take out line. There wasn't a lot of flavors to choose from, like Mitchells but they make their own ice cream. They had mango and ube, apple pie, and various others. They have junior scoops and single scoops - I opted for Ube and apple pie - 2 single scoops in a waffle cone. The size was monstruous- I should have listened to our server, Christian, who was super friendly, funny and chill! But my ego got to me. OK on to the ice cream- the flavirs were excellent. Not as creamy as Mitchell's, in fact sort of play-do-ee. But tasted really good. The apple pie was awesome, pie crust integrated with small spple pieces throughout- was good. The only issue I had was i detected a food-coloring taste- which was a little weird. I don't know why. Almost like colored cake frosting where u detect the dye in the food coloring. But it wasn't enough to deter me. Not Mitchell's but very good, hence the 4 stars. We saw other treats being made which looked promising - a bengeit sunday topped with whip cream - man look out. They had food as well. Next time we will try the food. Thanks to Christian for being entertaining! Go try it out.

Yelp
Service was great very helpful and fun. Ice cream was really good. Apple pie ice cream was a hit! Could have used a bit more apple but otherwise really good! Ube was fresh and yummy. The mango was so good!! Cookies and cream was a hit. Please was busy for the restaurant but no wait for the ice cream. Would come back.

Yelp
Omg is the ice cream amazing here! The chocolate peanut butter maybe the best ice cream I've ever had. It was chock full of peanuts, chocolate pieces and peanut butter. Zane was an awesome ice cream server!
google avatar

Yelp
Handmade ice cream, made daily! They have a lot of flavors so it was hard to choose, some flavors only differ by one ingredient (I.e. the chocolate lovers dream and brownie batter are the same but one has chips and one has brownie pieces). Not all flavors are on display, but you can still ask to taste flavors you see on the menu. The ice cream bar is right at the entrance - you can order and sit outside. They also have an indoor eating area, but I believe it's only if you're eating at their restaurant. Service was a bit slammed at the ice cream bar as it seemed they were fulfilling online orders and in-person orders. However, the employees working were happy to answer my questions and worked quickly. Seems to be a family friendly place, lots of kids around and perfectly situated in downtown.

Yelp
This ice cream place has a lot of flavors to try from. we tried the mango, vanilla, mint, cookie, coffee, and chocolate brownie. The flavors were really nice and the ice cream was also delicious. We paid around 40 something for two of these Sundays. I think that they could add more brownie to the Sunday and the ratio was a little off, but the taste was good and one Sunday is enough for five people because its really heavy and sweet. I think they could also improve on the service.

Yelp
Came here while visiting the area and had some fantastic ice cream. They have plenty of fresh and different ice cream flavors that you can have straight up, in a milk shake, or sunday. I personally like the cherry jubilee, brookies and cream, and the chocolate chip cookie dough. The OMG was also yummy. The place isn't cheap but the ice cream is worth it, they also let you sample as many as you want. Service was fast, even with a line, and everyone was friendly. We didn't eat there, but it has an old school diner vibe with booths and stools.
google avatar

Amy Y.

Yelp
Came here because it's a popular ice cream place and I wanted to try it. They have to area - one for take out and one for dine in. I'd kind of gives Fenton's vibe in Oakland. The flavors and assortment are plentiful both classic and unique. I don't think it's as creamy as baskin Robbin's or Fenton's. I tried a junior in a cup with 2 flavor - snicked doodle and cake mix. The flavors were all light but good. I want to go back and try the sundaes and larger items. Prices are higher than baskin Robbin's. A junior here is $6 and single is $7. For junior you can mix 2 flavors.

Yelp
I went there multiple times with my daughter whenever we have mom and daughter day! Even though that the name calls for ice cream, the food there is good too! The girls who always serves us, is very nice and fast! And patient!!

Yelp
San Francisco Creamery Co., Walnut Creek: 2024 Jul 30 (4) The story behind The San Francisco Creamery Company: It began around 30's and 40's. They make their own ice cream, hot fudge, chocolate syrup, caramel and butterscotch... the old-fashioned way. Some of the flavours look exotic. We tried several different flavours - and enjoyed most of them. The ice-cream tasted in close match to their descriptions. The pricing is a tad high - but, this could be due to their location. Overall, this is a 'must' visit joint if you're in the area. We gave this a 4.

Yelp
I asked for peanut butter chocolate ice cream. They served chocolate ice cream with peanuts and argued with me that that is what peanut butter ice cream is. Never coming back

Yelp
I am beyond annoyed & grossed out We came here because shake shack said they did not have any shakes so we decided to come here. We ordered two shakes! One Ube One Thai tea. My partner did not like the ube one. It was waaay to sweet from how ube ice cream usually taste. My Thai tea shake I almost spit out because drinking it I started to feel like sand was in my mouth. I looked at the bottom of my cup and it was just black pieces on the bottom. I couldn't get the gritty feeling out of my mouth. So beyond annoyed and grossed out I don't even know what that is. I've ordered the Thai tea vanilla bean before and it didn't have a gross gritty sand feeling.

Yelp
This review is only regarding their ice cream. They have a pretty wide variety of flavors. I got to try the mango peach sorbet which was actually good. However, I decided to get a "split scoop" of the regular mango and green tea. I got the junior size and it was still satisfying enough. In terms of taste, I have had better mango and green tea ice cream but it wasn't bad. I feel like the star flavor of the show was the golden caramel oreo (which my partner got). It has vanilla bean with caramel and obviously golden oreos. There was a few tables outside to sit and enjoy our ice cream, otherwise no seating inside unless you want to dine in. Server was nice and helpful too. No line at all on a Saturday after lunch on a sunny winter day.

Yelp
This establishment has good food and is an enjoyable place to visit but I quit doing business in Walnut Creek a few years ago. The street parking situation is ridiculous. The City farms the payment system for parking violations to Southern California and it is almost impossible to contest a ticket. Be sure to pay the meter on Sunday.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Service was great food was great and ambience was great like an old time ice cream parlour. Tough to find parking on a Saturday, but worth the walk.

Yelp
Worst customer service in Downtown WC, I've been here a few times to place orders to go and not even a greeting, they ask questions in a very rude manner. I kept going back bc I like the milkshakes but not anymore, not worth it. I do not recommend this place.
google avatar

Raina S.

Yelp
This place has good ice cream and that's about it. To the business owner it's a bad idea to harass your guests if they have takeout order ice cream and they sit indoors to eat. I was there at 10 PM at night got cold outside and we decided to sit inside and eat to get harassed by five employees within 10 minutes telling us we have to leave because this was takeout and not indoor ice cream. I was told by manager that it's a tax issue or something like that but this is the first time I heard it. I've been to plenty of restaurants where I've said takeout and I sat inside the restaurant to eat. I would not come back or recommend anyone to go here because of this experience .

Yelp
Back for another delicious Coffee Cookie Shake! I was at the Apple Store about 5 blocks away and decided it was worth walking in 85 degree heat just to have another Coffee Cookie Shake! ;)

Yelp
Awesome place to cool off in the heat of summer. We visited some family near the SF area and we decided to bring the kids to this place based on recommendations. The kids totally loved the ice cream. This place also serves food. Service was polite and quick. Recommended for a tasty treat with kids! Overall 4.5!

Yelp
This place is so fun! Lots of menu options but the ice cream with a side of a brownie was 10/10. We will Be back!

Yelp
I have to give San Francisco Creamery 5 stars for creating the Kitchen Sink Challenge, which my friend attempted and was one of the most entertaining things to watch. The challenge is to eat the entire sundae with 8 scoops of ice cream, 8 toppings, nuts, whipped cream, and cherries within 30 minutes. If you succeed, it's free AND you get free ice cream for a whole year. Otherwise, you have to pay $75.95 in addition to feeling sick hahaha. My friend said the ice cream was super creamy and had great flavor -- it seemed like he truly did enjoy the ice cream (until he didn't lol). This place also has amazing curly fries if you want something savory. They remind me of the perfect ones you can find at bowling alleys!

Yelp
Our family stopped by for some sweet treats on a hot day. We did have a rather large party compared to other diners so we understood there would be a wait. Unfortunately there was a restaurant with many diners and only one server. Poor staffing decision on the management. We landed up just ordering from the window as the server/hostess/food runner could barely attend to all her tables let alone our party. The gentleman at the window was great. He was very knowledgeable of the products they offered and flavors. The ice cream is average. Numerous other ice cream shops in town that offer way better service and better sweet treats.

Yelp
SF Creamery located in Walnut Creek is an awesome way to satisfy cravings for the SF Fisherman's Warf / Ghirardelli's ice cream ambiance and food without making the long drive over the bay bridge. The food is really good quality too. In terms of savory food, I highly recommend their crab sandwich. It is very well executed- it's not everyday you find a good crab sandwich like this. Another hidden gem is their beignets. Honestly they put most local southern themed restaurants to shame when it comes to these beignets - they come out hot, crispy on the outside and soft layers on the inside. My kids often ask for them specifically! Then theres the delicious banana split. Honestly their jr size is already big enough for me and the two kids to share! So it is a good value even without coupons. On Facebook they often have bogo offers for their sandwiches or ice creams so you can come with a group for a really great deal. The location also makes for a great pre or post Lesher Arts Center show meal. We will definitely be back for more!

Yelp
Hey! Why does your UBE ice cream taste like. Butterscotch !? If you don't believe me, taste it yourself. Try it. But before you do, close your eyes and then take a spoon of the fake UBE ice cream and taste it (with eyes closed). Now tell me, is that UBE or Butterscotch !? Please don't serve fake UBE. Ty

Dailee P.

Yelp
I dropped my ice cream right outside because I was singing a song and got carried away. I also had it on video so I go back in there and I say hey I drop my ice cream. Here's the video proof that I dropped it on the floor they made me pay for a free scoop. I have worked in an ice cream shop for over a year and a half and never once have I charged a customer if they drop their ice cream on the floor it's an honest mistake. We should be spreading love not trying to make money off of sad things that happen. The manager was extremely rude and was saying it was my fault it dropped, but it was just the scoop that fell not the cone, because they didn't press the ice cream into the cone! Things like this upset me because children could have easily had this kind of thing happen and i don't think it's fair to charge them again for a product that wasn't produced correctly.
google avatar

Yelp
The dining area is not as glamorous or spacious as I had imagined. Regardless, the black and tan is delicious and the banana split jr is not too bad either! Will swing by when in the area and the downtown area is fun to walk around too!
google avatar

Yelp
They have pizza now! The Detroit, pepperoni, and chicken bacon ranch was our favorite. The crust was so fresh, like French bread out of the oven with just the right amount of crunch! Bravo! Coming here for my pizzas from now on.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Ok I was told that they now have Pizza on the menu, so me and the wife made a trip from Hayward to Walnut Creek to try it. And man it was the best and now my favorite Bay Area pizza and its made in a freaking Ice Creamery lol. I spoke with owner and he mentioned everything is made on the spot and you could tell.

Yelp
Enjoyed this place whenever we went there. Their desserts were always good. No complaints about their service. Staff was always friendly. Ambiance is great with their decor of various things of an ice cream parlor.
google avatar

Yelp
We got lucky there wasn't a wait and received our ice cream quickly. Priced decently. Overall the place was clean. Will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Best banana split and beignet sundae!!! The banana split junior was huge enough to feed all 4 adults. I wonder how big the not junior banana split is. Will come back to find out
google avatar

Kristina P.

Yelp
We were looking for a dessert spot after lunch and stumbled here. They have a lot of ice cream choices to choose from! We got a warm & toasty brownie sundae with toasted almond, rocky road, and vanilla ice cream. The ice cream was good and creamy! We opted not to get the fudge syrup. My biggest complaint is that we paid rough $17 for this and the brownie was so small. It was thin and about half of the container. I would imagine that if brownie is in the title of the item, it would at least fit under each scoop of ice cream. That was a disappointment-- if I would've known it was going to be so small I would have just gotten a single scoop and added a brownie and save my money.
google avatar

Jeannie W.

Yelp
BBQ Tri tip was very tasty. Chicken sandwich was okay. Little disappointed of their famous crab sandwich because it was dried not enough mayonnaise or sauces. Very comfortable seats and clean. Will return to try the ice cream next time.
google avatar

Lindsay C.

Yelp
Best ice cream, all around. Wonderful deep flavors and a chewy texture make for the most premium ice cream on Main Street. I know the "new guy in town" has a great big long line, but I don't think you can beat San Francisco creamery for the best ice cream in Walnut Creek, or Contra Costa county for that matter!
google avatar

Helen F.

Yelp
Amazing local find! Ice cream was so good we forgot to take a picture first :) they were very friendly and the inside is very cozy and welcoming. Loved the food too, mac and cheese was amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
Waited in the area so we could be seated for dining for about 15 mins. No one ever even greeted us so we left. I've been to this place years ago but was surprised how run down it's gotten. Oh well, it'll probably be gone soon since there's 4 or more ice cream places in close proximity.

Betty P.

Yelp
I shared the pasta and pizza with my husband and it was very tasty. Food was amazing, staff were very attentive and friendly. Must try the ice cream, it was to die for. I had rainbow sherbet and it was one of the best I've ever had. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
We were so excited about this place. Literally looking forward to it all of dinner. Googling pictures, getting excited about the menu, working out our ordering plan, everything. Maybe it really was our fault then for hyping it up too much :( The ice cream wasn't outright bad, it was just subpar, and not worth it. Plus the inside felt crammed despite being a large space, and it certainly didn't feel like an ice cream parlor of any sort To start with the best of the dishes we ordered, my brother got the banana bread sundae, which was simple, but enjoyable. Not really much to say about it- the banana bread was pretty good, the ice cream was... vanilla ice cream. It looked pretty. My parents made their own sundae with chocolate peanut butter ice cream, which wasn't that. It was regular chocolate ice cream with peanuts mixed in. The peanuts were large and took away from the experience of eating the ice cream, while also not adding anything to the flavor. We all agreed if we had known they didn't actually have chocolate peanut butter ice cream, we would have ordered something different. But they liked the blueberries! My other brother ordered the Chocolate Lover's Dream, and said it was one of his least favorite chocolate ice creams he's had, given the overwhelming amount of chocolate chips. Said it was more so a bowl of chocolate chips than it was of ice cream, and he spent the entire time chewing. Finally, and arguably the most disappointing, the Black and Gold Sundae was a complete flop. They served it in a tall glass, but with the hot fudge inside the glass, so that the ice cream inside melted quickly, and made it impossible to get spoonfuls of the frozen ice cream in the top without pushing down and causing melted ice cream to spill everywhere. Most of it ended up on our plate, rather than eaten. It was really hard to share, despite being marketed for two people, because of how small the opening at the top of the glass was - and that was on top of the impossible task of actually getting any ice cream in your spoon in the first place. It included the "chocolate peanut butter" ice cream, which again, was just chocolate ice cream with peanuts, and we did not like. The almond ice cream would have been good, if 80% of it hadn't spilled over the rim of the glass. Then at the end we were just left with a couple inches of straight butterscotch - why put sauce on the bottom? That makes no sense to me. Anyways, we won't be coming back.

Yelp
While shopping in Walnut Creek on a Sunday afternoon I was craving some dessert/ice cream. San Francisco Creamery used to be so popular for their kitchen sink which is a miniature kitchen sink that's filled with tons of ice cream that's huge to share and was always a challenge. Now it's an older diner style restaurant, still has an older feel to it, diner food like sandwiches, burgers, etc and their ice cream. They have a to go order up front if you just want ice cream. Me and my friend decided to just sit in and I always love my ice cream cone. It's not too busy but it's a good spot if you're in for something quick and not looking for something super formal to dine in for. There's street parking but it's always hit or miss out there, but there are plenty of parking garages in the area too.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
MISLEADINGLY NAMED "San Francisco" Creamery? Really? No. It's in Walnut Creek, a bridge, a tunnel, two counties and a fair trip away from San Francisco. If that's how they describe their business, I wonder how they describe their product and ingredients. As Monty Python said, "It's just the name of the shop, sir!"
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Had a burger, salad, and shake. The shake was great! They use actual ice cream and it is nice and thick, unlike other places. The salad was also pretty good, although maybe could have been bigger. I like that the grilled chicken was salted or marinated, so it had a good flavor instead of being plain. the SF burger with chili was just okay. I expected the chili to be more, so I will probably try another burger next time. They also accept Apple Pay!
google avatar

Emily E.

Yelp
Best place for an ice cream treat. Vibe is old school diner. Come have the largest ice cream sundae you've ever seen.
google avatar

Yelp
San Francisco Creamery is a staple of downtown Walnut Creek and is probably one of the only establishments on Locust St that's been around for decades (other than Peet's Coffee across the street). I understand it was also featured on a Food Network show a while back. As a result, and especially when it's warmer outside, the place can be crazy busy, especially for sitting in doors. That being said, they have a takeout-only window that rarely has a long line and even when there is one, it moves very quickly. I do agree with some of the other reviews that indicated some flavors were overly sweet - I usually just stick with the coffee flavor, which I believe is very well balanced. In addition, there are a small number of tables outside where you can sit and enjoy your ice cream, as well as do some people watching on Locust. My only (minor) complaint is that I wish they would wipe down/clean the outdoor tables more frequently - every time we've been, they've been extremely sticky and kinda gross.

Yelp
It was a hot day and wanted ice cream. I had ti wait a few minutes to be seated since it looks like only one waitress. Once I had a table service was great. I decided to have a sandwich and dessert. So glad I did cuz they were both delicious. The restaurant was great place to cool down on a hot day.

Yelp
Delicious and fun. Service is a tad bitchy and the toilet was broken, but would highly recommend for family and kids.
