Do not buy Tres Leches cake here. Also - they have insanely high menu prices for the type of place it is.
I picked up a last minute Tres Leches cake for my daughter's birthday. It was supposed to have raspberry filling layered in it, which sounded really good. And, I asked them to write Happy Birthday in light aqua blue, and my daughter's name in pink. The girl looked at me like she totally understands what I'm saying, no English barriers or anything, said okay, and when she brought it out, the lettering was in dark blue, almost black. Only the name was right. That was so disappointing, but it was already ruined - so too late.
We ate it the next day and it was SO dry, gritty, and pasty. Similar to the texture and flavor of old corn bread. It had almost NO actual tres leches creaminess going on, or even a real raspberry taste.
The raspberry layer was actually fake raspberry gel in neon red artificial coloring. Like some kind of cheap jelly.
The little 6 inch cake I got was $38. I have a feeling it was kind of old. Our family each barely choked down 2-3 bites, trying not to gag, then threw the entire remaining 1/2 of cake away in the trashcan along with our own slices. Such a waste of money! Ruined the excitement to enjoy cake.
I looked at the restaurant menu while waiting, and the prices were higher than what we pay when we go out to breakfast at upscale Solana Beach or Del Mar restaurants on the weekend.. Each breakfast plate was plain, and all had beans and rice. And each started at $18 and up! Insanely over priced for plain food at a very old restaurant, that is literally across the street from a trailer park and a cemetery on a back road full of trailer stuff and repair shops.
But, the GREEDY prices are what really turned me off. The surroundings and atmosphere do not match the prices. No wonder it was totally empty. Oceanside needs a good quality, "from scratch" type of bakery. It's too bad this is not it.
