The pork ribs in green chili sauce at San Luis Rey Bakery and Restaurant are absolutely delightful! The tender pork ribs are perfectly cooked, smothered in a flavorful green chili sauce that has just the right amount of spice. The sides of cheesy refried beans and fluffy Spanish rice complement the main dish beautifully, making it a well-rounded meal. The fresh, warm tortillas served on the side are ideal for soaking up the delicious sauce. The cozy ambiance and friendly service further enhance the dining experience. A must-try for lovers of authentic Mexican cuisine!

Friendly service. Clean, cooling, nice environment to dine in. Great food and pricing. Ordered 2 kinds of salads and a horchata. We bought baked goods in addition to dining in. Everything was superb. 👍🏻

This place is awesome! Great host and the breakfast is amazing. Can’t wait to try more from the bakery!

Google
First and foremost I want to say that the staff is extremely kind and humble and very clean, on top of that the food was extremely delicious with literal taste of freshness. I want to add on how clean the area is for being a very old backery/restaurant. The pastry's alone have a 26/30 points on My scale for freshness, portion size, decoration, and fluffiness. I highly recommend this little hidden gem of a place to eat.

Google
We just love this place. We go about 3 times a month . The staff are wonderful kind people, the best. It’s just a neat place. Prices are very reasonable and they even give a senior discount. But I love their food and a pastry for desert. Is it the Ritz Carlton? No. But it’s just a neat place and sometimes on Sundays they even have small bands playing music. Personally I love their beef Taco and cheese Enchilada combo, or the Avocado 🥑 omelette for Breakfast. Also their coffee is decent.

Google
The atmosphere is nice, they had a live pair performing. It was a tad bit loud but good ambience. The bakery and restaurant are separated so it’s easy to get your bakery items without having to walk through tables. The food was tasty and well portioned. The chilaquiles were not spicy at all, I wish they were a bit more spicy but it’s understandable.

Google
This place was incredible! The service was toooooo great, the food even better, and the atmosphere.... the atmosphere was incredible too. Like better than the Earth's atmosphere. How can you get better than that. A trust hidden gem. I can't wait to go back and get some more food off of the menu. Great pan too. The service hit a new high for me. I felt like they were all family friends by the time we left. Mmmm Good, not bad.

Yelp
Almost don't want to write this review and just gatekeep this place. But anything less than 5 stars is a travesty. I mean it's an old school style restaurant, local kids and relatives are your servers. The food is straight home style fresh Mexican food. It's not the boughie stuff on the coast but it's also not taco shop quality. It's as real as it gets. The freshest tortillas and Morning specials like Nopales con huevo or Menudo get changed often enough that I keep coming back just to see what they have. (And it always good) On the weekends they have Cafe de Olla which can be a meal in itself with any of their pastries. Yeah. They have a full on Mexican pastry counter, with a handful of French style pastries too. The service is always top notch and super friendly, albeit you might have to make an effort to wave someone down if you sit outside. Place is the best thing in Oceanside. Definitely check it out. (But don't tell ALL your friends)

Yelp
I was looking for an authentic Mexican food when we visited Carlsbad. This place was suggested by one of the staff in the Mission Del Rey. The servings were huge but the tastes lack the mex food authenticity. We ordered Chicken tacos combo and the Friday special which is a the Beef Milanese sandwich combo( i think). The Friday Special taste like it was fried in old oil. I usually ask the servers for their favorite but this time I ordered what's advertised on their special menu. The service is great and place is clean and there are lots of nice paintings on the wall.

Yelp
This is my fourth time here, I make this a must stop between L.A. to San Diego to enjoy a very good bowl of menudo. I also enjoy having cafe de olla with the sweet bread from their bakery. The staff if very attentive to make sure we enjoy our meal. You can also visit San Luis Rey Mission right next door. On Saturday mornings you also get live music on occasions.

Yelp
Good food but very hidden location. Prices have really gone up. Slow service at times. Unsure about returning.

Yelp
Continues to be such a great place for breakfast. We don't go often because it (like every place) is expensive, but when we try to make time for a breakfast date this is where I want to go. I stick with the chilaquiles verde con huevos. $17. I can never finish it but my husband gladly does. But I eat small portions. So good and delicious and not greasy at all. Wish it came with with tortillas. 3 tortillas is $6.64. Yikes. But flour tortillas are good. Small but good. Please add tortillas to breakfast. Gets too costly. The orange juice is from the jug but yummy. It's $5.30, crazy how expensive things has gotten. Great service and great good. Plenty of seating inside and outside

Yelp
Been here so many times! Love the bakery and all the delicious options to choose from. If you have time to eat at their restaurant, do so for some good Mexican food! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I had an amazing breakfast there recently, nothing real special, just eggs, hashbrowns, and sausage. The service was excellent and fast, and the food was fresh. I also had a bowl of fruit that was very tasty. It's the best breakfast place in Oceanside.

Yelp
Easy going atmosphere. Great local Mexican restaurant !! The tamales are yummy!! Red or green, they are good ! It is a family owned restaurant. The tamales are ready to be ordered for the holidays!!!

Yelp
Came by to order a birthday cake. I'll review that experience once we get the cake. Ordering was easy and they worked with what I was requesting. I needed a small birthday cake with a paw patrol image. I don't pick it up for a few days but will update review. We did get some cookies and pastries. So far everything has tasted great. Didn't try the restaurant.

Yelp
Great service and wonderful food! The atmosphere was comfortable and relaxing. Will be returning to this fine establishment! Currently visiting California but this will be marked as my favorite spot!

Yelp
I would really like to give this place a better rating and support a small business, but we haven't had a smooth experience either time and some communication would have gone a long way. I've ordered two cakes here, and the quality was good on the product, but as far as the decorating they messed it up twice without calling to say we needed to pick an alternative. The first cake we requested tulips piped on, and they decorated with red roses and never called to ask if we would mind a different flower. We were simply told they can do tulips and made a change without asking. The second order we asked for three names on the cake, and they only put two without calling us. They also used a dark red frosting that bled and looked messy on the white frosting. They hastily added the third name on the front of the cake at pickup. I probably won't be coming here for cake orders. Not sure about the restaurant or other pre-made goods, but unimpressed on the cake orders.

Yelp
Very nice ambiance. I sat outside since it's usually a beautiful day in Oceanside! I was hesitant about ordering the menudo because it's never authentic enough anywhere I order it. They even offered PATA on the menu. I was surprised, no one EVER offers PATA with menudo at a restaurant. So I decided to take a chance and order menudo with PATA. The menudo was surprisingly authentically GOOD. They brought the PATA in a different bowl. I ordered a small bowl just in case. I enjoyed both and ordered the flour tortillas which were also hand made and delicious!!! I will definitely go there again and try the Pan Dulce to take home! I gave them 4 stars because service was slow and by the time they came around to my table asking if everything was ok, I was done. I could have used another napkin, water, and coffee. While I was done I also had to wait around to get a container for the rest of my menudo, I was full.

Yelp
Went all the way there to order a breakfast burrito so I could request some modifications. Paid extra for them. Waited at least 15-20 mins. Got home and none of the modifications were made. Pretty disappointing experience.

Yelp
I can't believe I paid $30.00 for 4 Christmas cookies and three snowball cookies from San Louis Rey bakery. I saw the prices written on the paper sign so I chose carefully. The Christmas themed gingerbread cookies ranged from $7 each to 2.50 each. I needed 4 for a gift for two little kids, 2 each. The ones I chose cost $5 each but it was for gifts so I went for it. However, I did not think 3 snowball cookies would be $9. My bill was $31.12. Ouch! Too late to change my mind but my mood changed from being annoyed to angry when I opened one bag and found the antlers broken off one of the Reindeer cookies. The carelessness of the store clerk ruined a $5 gift cookie. I can't go back to get a replacement so I'm stuck. They should know better. They should pack them better. Live and learn.

Yelp
Mission San Luis Rey Bakery, and Restaurant, Oceanside, CA - November 22, 2023 We came here for lunch on Wednesday afternoon after visiting the mission. The first thing you see as you walk in is the bakery counter, which looked really good. We were a party of six, and they needed to set up a table for us when we got there. The ambulance is nothing special in the dining room. Basic chairs and tables. They got us water and menus right away and then brought over two amazingly TINY baskets of chips. I think there were about eight chips in each basket, if that. I had a bad first impression of that and asked for some more chips. They brought one more tiny basket of chips. I was thinking wow, if this is any indication of how good this place is, we're in trouble. Boy, was I wrong. Our group ordered the Carne Asada Quesadilla, a Carnitas burrito, and a crispy Carnitas taco. The quesadillas came with guacamole. The food was incredibly well seasoned and delicious. They did bring us three more baskets of chips when I asked them. After lunch, we headed over to the bakery to buy some cookies. Although the cookies look delicious, they were dry and weren't the best I've ever had. One star for the skimpy amount chips, eight stars for the delicious food, and three stars for the cookies.

Yelp
10/10. Deff best mexican wedding cookies ive ever had. Very friendly and helpful customer service. And as someone that moved from orange county and hasnt been able to find real authentic mexican food that isn't velveta cheese or caned beans. The breakfast burito i had was a home run. Huge and yummy. Very satisfied

Yelp
Old Mexican restaurant near the mission. They've been there for 57 years. Decor on the outside patio is nice, but the inside is run down. What I tried: Tamale was good but at $9.00 each, it was overpriced and parts were crusty from the microwave. Asked for red salsa but got green instead. Enchilada was very good. Salsas are not very good. Cake was not good, tasted like from a premix, and the icing tasted like old saturated fat. Flan was rotten there was a hard crust on top because it was so old it had dried up and it smelled like rotten eggs. Had to throw it away. So dining food is 3 stars but bakery is overpriced for the poor quality 2 stars.

Yelp
Do not buy Tres Leches cake here. Also - they have insanely high menu prices for the type of place it is. I picked up a last minute Tres Leches cake for my daughter's birthday. It was supposed to have raspberry filling layered in it, which sounded really good. And, I asked them to write Happy Birthday in light aqua blue, and my daughter's name in pink. The girl looked at me like she totally understands what I'm saying, no English barriers or anything, said okay, and when she brought it out, the lettering was in dark blue, almost black. Only the name was right. That was so disappointing, but it was already ruined - so too late. We ate it the next day and it was SO dry, gritty, and pasty. Similar to the texture and flavor of old corn bread. It had almost NO actual tres leches creaminess going on, or even a real raspberry taste. The raspberry layer was actually fake raspberry gel in neon red artificial coloring. Like some kind of cheap jelly. The little 6 inch cake I got was $38. I have a feeling it was kind of old. Our family each barely choked down 2-3 bites, trying not to gag, then threw the entire remaining 1/2 of cake away in the trashcan along with our own slices. Such a waste of money! Ruined the excitement to enjoy cake. I looked at the restaurant menu while waiting, and the prices were higher than what we pay when we go out to breakfast at upscale Solana Beach or Del Mar restaurants on the weekend.. Each breakfast plate was plain, and all had beans and rice. And each started at $18 and up! Insanely over priced for plain food at a very old restaurant, that is literally across the street from a trailer park and a cemetery on a back road full of trailer stuff and repair shops. But, the GREEDY prices are what really turned me off. The surroundings and atmosphere do not match the prices. No wonder it was totally empty. Oceanside needs a good quality, "from scratch" type of bakery. It's too bad this is not it.

Carlos B.

Yelp
This used to be a good place but now the quality went down the drain all the way down. I tried it today. Got a carne asada burrito. Bursting Ever carne asada was like the leftovers in the pot. It was terrible burrito was over salty and I got some pastries, and they're all old and taste stale. What happened to the place. It used to be a Super Great Pl., Now. It's terrible. Do not recommend no one to go. Just save your money.

Ken B.

Yelp
Food not bad but price is ridiculous. For three for breakfast bill was $106, added la a carte hash browns and extra tortillas which I never got $34.00. I'll never go back!

Yelp
San Luis Rey Bakery and Restaurant has a very historic and family, cozy feel. They have plenty of indoor seating options. I really liked the interior of the place as it creates "good vibes". They are efficient for to go pastery orders. Their bakery has a variety of selections to choose from such as cakes, pies, cookies and other pastries. I was mildy dismayed that they didn't really have that many vegan options. They had one entree that the server said didn't contain any animal products which was their Avacado Tacos. They were very tasty and delicious! The server informed me that their beans are cooked in lard and they didn't have black beans for substitutions. None of their bakery items are vegan. Overall, this is a great place if you are looking to try something new with a nice ambiance. It is located near Heritage Park which is a place I highly recommend visiting if you haven't already!

Yelp
friendly, delicious, chill lil hole in the wall. awesome selection of food and pastries, all home made and authentic pan dulces.

Yelp
It was hard to get waited on even though there were 4 waiters and not too crowded the first thing that hit me was they were racist finally we had different waiters coming off and on Our order was wrong but finally got it straight Four tacos three enchiladas and three drinks $86.00 outrageous the food was good but the service and price was NOT GOOD AT ALL
google avatar

Yelp
Horrible communication on an attempted "delivery". Just decided to cancel an order while they were still open. Probably dodged a bullet anyways from this place
google avatar

Yelp
I've been a customer since the mid 90s. Their restaurant is great...recommend huevos ranchero for breakfast and the taco Tuesday special. Our family has been purchasing birthday cakes from them since 1994. All of their baked goods are phenomenal. Very friendly staff.
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is 65 years old and everything is like homemade. The enchiladas remind me of when I was a kid growing up the smell, the taste everything that comes along with great food. bakery is fantastic and nothing feeds the pallet like old-fashioned Mexican pastries. The ambience is great and it seems to take me back into time when I was a kid going into great Mexican restaurants old-fashioned wise. I will return again. I want to give this restaurant if I star review because of their great service, hot and timely food plus their coffee is hot and satisfying. What more could anyone ask for five star all around? I will return thank you.

Shannon K.

Yelp
First time here w hubby and let me just say, I have been missing out. Customer service - stellar. Friendliest staff! THE FOOD!!! amazing! Can't wait to come back w my family and kids. Love love love it!

Yelp
Great pan Dulce at a very good price. The only drawback is that parking can be at a minimum depending on the time of day as it's on a corner of a turn, but, you'll be fine most days. The interior is not modern but you'll feel right at home, especially if you don't want something super bougie. Paying is super easy, and the assortment is always looking fresh.

Yelp
I was recommended this place from a colleague at work and it could not have turned out any better. I walked in for an early dinner around 4:30 PM and was greeted promptly by one of the staff. Being so early in the day there were only three or four other couples in the restaurant. The quiet atmosphere, and the music was perfect. As soon as you walk in there is a festive environment with many treats on display in the bakery section. My meal, Chile relleno, was exquisite. I don't frequently have the opportunity to eat traditional Mexican food, but this place brought my desire to perfection! Thank you once again for bringing me a wonderful evening of culinary excellance. highly recommended!

Karen L.

Yelp
This was always the place to go for baked goods when I lived here. While visiting I stopped by and picked up some cookies (dz for $11). They were all so yummy. I also picked up some the jellyroll with coconut. OMG to die for. I will be back in July and will stop in again.

Ellen W.

Yelp
The food is pretty good, but the items in the bakery are excellent! You do need to specify the size of the item you're ordering in the restaurant or they will bring you (and charge you) for a large.

Kim J.

Yelp
Don't what happened here, it used to be good and prices reasonable, prices have risen by $3-4 for each meal. Not only was the food terrible so was the service. Most food was reheated and the 'guacamole' was mostly green salsa. Brought some home cuz I couldn't eat it just to see if indeed it had any avocado in it, guess what it didn't turn brown after a day. Meaning there was very little or no avocado in it. Of the two orders only one was right. Service was definitely lacking. And I will never return there.

Yelp
This is a Mexican restaurant and bakery. This visit I got their Christmas cookies which are beautiful and tasty. I took to a party and everyone loved them. They also have delicious gluten free chocolate cookies which are moist and crispy on outside and are delicious and don't taste gluten-free. Place is clean and staff helpful.

Yelp
Stopped here before visiting the Mission San Luis Rey. This place did not disappoint. All our dishes were excellent. I had the Camarones a la diabla. The spice was sweat inducing but didn't burn my tongue so I couldn't taste the flavors. The shrimps were decently sized and a good amount to get me full. My wife had the chile Verde which was also amazing. The pork was very tender and the flavors of the Chile Verde sauce had the right heat. We also had the special of the day which was nopales with ribs and tomato based sauce. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and the sauce had a little hint of mole that was also delicious. Lastly we also had the spinach omelette with onions and with white cheese and hash browns. The hash browns were cooked to perfection for me (I like them extra crispy). The combination of the cheese, eggs, and spinach with onions came out very tasty. We're definitely coming back here to try the other menu items.

Yelp
I ordered pastries to be delivered to my friend in Oceanside CA I live in Texas. She was so happy and said this is the best bakery in her area.

Yelp
San Luis Rey Bakery has been around for decades. It's a homey place with a bakery (duh!) full of pastries, cookies and mexican treats like Ojos de Pancha, brocas, empanadas and conchas, as well as cakes, rolls and breads. But then there's the restaurant! Indoor and outdoor dining, with a great menu full of homestyle food, breakfast, lunch or dinner. I've had about everything on the menu and love it. My favorite breakfast is the nopales burrito but their lunch combos are tasty and huge. We like to go for breakfast on weekends and then bring back a box of baked goodies for home. Excellent place, family owned and as local as it gets!
google avatar

Gavin B.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican cuisine! Delicious menu with custom bakery to choose from, with pastries to cookies! Just a short walk from San Luis Rey Mission! Service with a smile but can be busy at certain times! Inside and outside seating available! Enjoy your meals for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Or order it to go! But eating there is better if you have the time...nice and clean inside with Mexican decorations to enjoy! Plus Clean restrooms are always best!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Fantastic spot for a nice breakfast and a pastry. Nice outside patio and super clean inside. Excellent service.

Yelp
Wonderful pastries with a great selection and awesome staff! It smells amazing when you walk in and so many goodies remind me of my childhood.

Yelp
Paid $130 for a half sheet and the design was not what I expected and the taste was worse I ordered chocolate cake with strawberry cream cheese and got strawberry buttercream??? I basically threw the entire cake away waste of money will not return for a cake ever. I wanted a horror themed with blood drizzle on the sides?? I got amateur hour...

Yelp
Located next to our local parish, the San Luis Rey Mission, my family has frequented this establishment on Sundays after mass on many occasions. My parents and kids always ordered food (Mexican) and loved it! My mom especially with the Avocado & cheese Omelette. I am not a big eater for breakie, but would usually grab something from the extensive selection in their bakery, where they always have freshly baked goods, to go along with my coffee. The bakery has a very large assortment of goods and also is well known for their cakes, which can be ordered custom. Service was always fantastic (we've only been here for breakfast time).
google avatar

Yelp
Order a plate of Fruit. With Strawberries, blueberries, oats, bananas, cantaloupe, topped with cottage cheese. I didn't know it came topped with cottage cheese which is my only complaint but it was still good. The veggie omelette was excellent. Came with tomatoes onions, green peppers, and mushrooms. I liked the way they made the side of potatoes by leaving them big. Thet were good as well.

Yelp
Went on a Sunday around 12pm for lunch. Not too crowded and was seated immediately. Checked out their bakery selection, which was huge (refer to pictures). I ordered their breakfast (eggs & sausage). They started with some chips and salsa, in which after one bite of the chips, it tasted a bit chewy and stale. Food took a lengthy time to come out...sausage tasted and looked a little under cooked. My family ordered the enchiladas and rolled tacos to which they commented was good. Unfortunately I didn't partake on their baked goods, so I can't provide feedback on them.
google avatar

Yelp
I was there the first week of the opening of this restaurant. I enjoyed the food and it is what was needed in this community. The food is great and the service is good. This restaurant continues to show that the food is consistently delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful and tasty cookies, pastries, and food!! Clean & friendly bakery. Tasty Holiday gifts and even dog treats! Enjoy!

Cynthia J.

Yelp
I don't recommend buying a tres leches cake here. We bought one that looked good, but it tasted really bad. It barely had any bread and it had a lot of watery filling that was way too sweet. It's too bad because we were looking forward to eating it! I won't be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
Super yummy food! The service and ambiance is amazing! The service can be a bit slow but it's worth it! The pastries are so worth it and everything is delicious!
