Brad Dodson of Food Cart Bolo Shares His Favorite Portland Restaurants | Eater Portland

"At my recently-opened cart in the Bantu Island pod on Northeast Alberta, I specialize in Portuguese sweet muffins called bolo levedos — soft, squishy, almost like a brioche and something I’d describe to someone unfamiliar as kind of like an English muffin — made with eggs, butter, and sugar. I started making them out of my kitchen during the pandemic, handing them out until people began Venmoing me, and now I use them as a vehicle for a spicy fried chicken sandwich with cilantro, a fried deviled egg sandwich, and a burger packed with pineapple, onion, and spices that’s reminiscent of a meatloaf sandwich; I also toss them in sugar and fill them as doughnuts (pumpkin spice was a recent offering) or serve them alongside things like fish soup or delicata squash. The bolos come from San Miguel in the Azores, where they’ve traditionally been cooked on a cast iron set on a volcanic vent, and I went there recently to see them firsthand." - Thom Hilton

Everything is made so fresh and delicious! Love the salsa bar, though I wish they provided little cups to pour into. They serve beer. Love the chilaquiles and pastor tacos. Great prices for the quality and portions.

You know what? Pretty decent place! Food was pretty dang good, even if portions were a little small (granted I'm a fat s.o.b., so take that into consideration). The staff was very friendly and professional. The vibes were nice. The several times I've gone (and, yes, I gladly revisited) have always been around midday and I particularly love how it feels like its the evening inside. Over the course of our few visits we've had some tortas, some tacos, gorditas, and flautas. Sides are good, main courses better, and we've yet to experience a meal we don't like. Some of them needed a little salt (table salt is provided) but I'd rather have the option to add salt to my taste than to bite into a salty meal. So, all is good on that front. Place is clean, restrooms make me think I'm in a cool after hours joint, the service was courteous and prompt, and the prices were very fair. ONLY complaint I have is that the drink situation is kinda weak. Seems that bottled drinks is all they have and so, as you can expect, each bottle is a charge of its own. I get it, a lot of small places do this to round out profits but, yeah, it ain't great. That aside, I'll revisit again soon.

The food was wonderful! The only reason why I didn’t give them a 5 star is because I requested the ticket to make sure everything was charged correctly & they told me they aren’t able to give me the ticket until I pay . I find that very sketchy. I went ahead and paid and noticed on the ticket that they overcharged me for 1 side of tortilla. A taco was $3.25 (reasonable) & an extra side or corn tortillas was $5. It was more expensive than a taco with meat!!!! This is why I don’t recommend restaurants that don’t provide the ticket before paying because they steal or they do shady stuff like this. That was my only concern but the food itself is good!

My husband and I were visiting from San Antonio and we passed by the restaurant and decided to give it a try for breakfast and it was ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! The chilaquiles and taco tripas were excellent. Great atmosphere and very clean. I would definitely comeback.

The food was excellent and the service was prompt. My husband ordered the San miguel quesodilla and i orderd Elote tostada, carne asada and Carnita taco. The the tacos were good but the quesodilla was the best we've ever had! This will be our go to spot in El Paso.

To be honest, I was skeptical about the place. It was probably some of the best Mexican food I've had in a while. My family had tacos, a torta, quesadillas, bean burritos for the kids, and I had the quesabirrias. Everything was extremely good. Highly recommend.

Ordered 4 Tacos with Homemade Tortillas. I receieved 4 Tacos rolled up in tinfoil. The tortilla was a bit dry didnt taste fresh, the meat was ok but the tacos were very plain. No onion, no cilantro, no lime. I did got a very tiny cup of vegetables that was enough for 1 taco. I wouldn't say it was the worst tacos but i wont be ordering from this place again.

Excellent customer service and food is incredibly good!! Fresh tortillas with your tacos to delicious salsa bar. Flavor in meat’s is really rich…. Very clean location as well…..Their aguas frescas are fresh and mouth watering….

Yelp
I was skeptical about eating here it's in back of Dairy Queen. To my surprise the Sirloin Tacos were delicious. The place is clean and decorated in Mexican high end art.

Yelp
I have seen lines out the door and always wanted to try this place. I'm glad I finally did. They also have a great salsa bar with all the extras. The tacos are pretty big, two tacos and a cold beer is all I needed. They have TVs if you wanted to watch a game. The elote is canned sweet corn, so don't go comparing this to your favorite Juarez version, but the flavors are all good. I love Ysleta and am glad this hole in the wall will be a true staple in the future.

Yelp
While the location is not much to look at on the outside, we were very pleased with the inside and the food. Service was mediocre. They provided us menus and you order first at the counter. There's lots of choices, from tacos to tortas. While at the counter I couldn't decide until I saw a picture of a partillada, a meal for four, with a little of everything. I asked about that because I didn't see it on the menu. They first brought us some Charro beans first which was delicious. Then all the fixings and we added our own sauces which you can grab yourself. I was surprised there was no papa's asadas but it was plenty if food. Guacamole was on point! The tortillas are homemade too which is a huge plus for me. I will definately be back when I am in the mood for some tacos or tortas.

Yelp
Decor/atmosphere is comfortable and up to-date. You order/ pay at counter, they bring to your table. Flautas (4) were very plain, nothing to write home about. Skimpy on the protein side, and the produce too. Salsa bar is bland. The nachos were so-so. The quesadilla was ok. The agua Fresca de melon: totally devoid of flavor. A 4 of 10 i say.

Yelp
The food was good no complaints about that! I had placed my order on grubhub for MYSELF to pick up. Walked in there wasn't greete in anyway ... no hello, hi, welcome in. So I just went ahead and told them my name and the guy responds "you know this has been sitting here for over 20 minutes." And I reply "oh that's fine" and he says back "no it's not because it's going to get cold." After that I just walked out and didn't say anything... yes I understand it will probably be cold. But yet again it's my own order for myself I wasn't delivering it or anything. I just thought that was so rude, I've worked in customer service for 10 years now and unless someone was complaining about it being cold. That's when you mention how long it's been sitting there for. But I was not complaining .... My point is WORK on your customer service and how to greet people or you'll lose them quickly.

Yelp
Overpriced quality of food is poor..extremely over seasoned especially the french fries. Mala calidad no vale la pena el precio muy caro.

Yelp
Food was good. Environment was really nice. They have a salad bar where you can add any toppings to your tacos - I'm simple. Fresh and constantly being checked on. The elote chips were so good

Yelp
Ordered Pa' los tuyos which comes with two different 1 & 1/2 pound meats (so 3lbs in total). I received only 1lb of meat. The restaurant said that the amount is when they weigh the meat, not after it's cooked lol.

Yelp
I've only lived in El Paso for 2 months and unfortunately, all these restaurants have horrible service. This taco place has given me hope for EP. Apart from those delicious tacos, the service was over the top amazing. These people were just darling. As for the food, finger licking good!!. The tortillas are fresh made and includes a decent salsa bar. I'm would highly recommend the mulas. :) Would definitely recommend to my fellow Californians.

Isabel O.

Yelp
Tacos not good tortillas tasted old all the salsas in the salsa mini bar taste and looked old shredded cabbage was brown.

Evelyn M.

Yelp
Everything is freshly made. Their tacos are pretty big so you'll get full with maybe 2. And their tortas are just delicious! You also have to try out their nachos!
