10 Best Bars and Restaurants for a Taco Tuesday in San Antonio | Eater

"Sancho’s, a popular downtown cantina, pours only 100 percent agave tequilas alongside a menu of fresh Mexican food that features traditional tacos like lengua guisada, pollo tinga, picadillo, and more. Kick it up a notch with the Spicy Sancho, a potent blend of reposado tequila, lime, orange juice, and a dash of hot sauce. With live music and a pup-friendly policy, it’s easy for the party to go on all night here." - Vox Creative

As I'm dropping an employee off from Lyft to work, she tells me to check it out! I really enjoyed the smaller dive-bar and not too busy watering holes back in my day! Parking was a little confusing as I thought you could park immediately behind, but I saw the very clear signs that are marked, "NO SANCHOS PARKING!" or will be towed. There is a parking lot across the street, 50 feet from the front door entrance, which was nice. As you walk in, you should prepare to be a little tight as there is not much room. There's more bar stools at the bar than more room to fit. I was disappointed because I had to move one out of the way just to be able to squeeze in to sit. It's not a problem, though. That just means many come to have a great time 🤘. The bartender came right away and was so super cool and also offered me recommendations. On this trip I didn't eat but let me tell you, it smelled very good! He also made my drinks very quickly and served them together, which is always nice. The music playing in the background was also to my taste. Alternative, throwback made the ambient bar feel great! Restrooms were clean and fully stocked, which is a plus for me! I'm definitely planning on going back to see and hear the live music and enjoy some more cocktails.

Me and my husband loved it so much we came back two days in a row. The food was so perfect and authentic it made us feel in Mexico. The margarita was really good. The nachos with beef were addicting and the tacos were absolutely spot on. The portions are generous, great prices and atmosphere

Google
My favorite bar! The food here is off the charts. Soo yummy! There are excellent vegan choices in addition to dishes containing meat. Live music almost every night with some of San Antonio's best local musicians and bands providing a great variety of music. There is something for everyone from the music to the food snd a full bar featuring award winning margaritas. I've been a regular for several years I have to say the service at times is lacking, but through out the years Sanchos has always had a great staff. They work hard and are some of my favorite people! I recommend Sanchos to anyone looking to hear some great local bands and eat some excellent food. Lastly, I almost forgot, SANCHOS is a very laid back and casual shorts and flip flops kinda place. Be sure to pet the resident kitty cats while there 😀

Google
This was a great find for us. Love the vibe and the food. We went on a karaoke night. The food was amazing. This is best Tex Mex we had in San Antonio hands down.

Google
So me and the Hubby were cruising around looking for unique eats and Sanchos filled the bill. It wasn't that hot yet so we sat rooftop. The misters were refreshing. We split some picadillo nachos and he had a bistec torta while I opted for the calabaza and elote tacos and a margaritas flight. The freshness and flavors were on point. The salsa had a nice little kick and the margaritas were the perfect pallet quincher. We'll definitely go back. We noticed there's a stage, so hopefully we can catch a show.

Great food and drinks. Free Jazz on Mondays. Cigars allowed outside. Highly recommend!

Google
We always enjoy this spot. Delicious food that is not your typical bar food. Friendly waitress and fast courteous service from all the employees we encountered. Good place to sit outside, drink a beer, eat some good food, and listen to live music or their streaming music.

Google
The proprietors have created a great neighborhood "dive" bar. The food is pretty good with veg options. And the bands that run through the week are some of SA best and most fun bands! I'll be honest .. the service sucks post covid. A chill place.

Yelp
As a 15 year plus downtown resident, this is our backyard. With 30 plus years in the hospitality field (now retired) I feel I can bring you real insight into our locations. The good, the bad and the ugly. If we run across a serious issue, I will always go directly to management and not post it. I truly believe you always must give management an opportunity to correct a serious issue. If not corrected and or just ignored, then I feel it is correct to inform the public - professionally. No establishment is perfect. I will bring to you smaller hiccups we may have come across. I will rarely comment on the taste of food - being bad, as that is a very personal thing. My wife and I disagree on taste of food and wine, no one is wrong or right. Now if the food is on fire, burned, under/overcooked to our requests, that would be mentioned. My favorite thing about our visit to SANCHOS was their hospitality. Sometimes things do not turn out as you think (the customers end). We had a scheduled event planned at SANCHOS, and some of the RSVPs didn't show up. Nothing changed at all from our server, he was simply amazing. Rearranged the tables to make it more suitable for us. And we received more one-on-one attention and interaction with him - he was amazing. Then the food and drinks. To say a solid happy hour menu for both drinks and food is an understatement. It is worth the Uber if you live downtown SATX! Had some amazing apps and drinks! The price point you can't beat! Live music every Thursday, SANCHOS has a real neighborhood feel to it, but has a downtown view. We will set up another Thirsty Thursdays event in the spring. PS on the happy hour bites - try the croquetas de Camaron - "take a cold shower good"! See you soon, just Cindi and I!

Yelp
I had a craving for chips and queso today, so my husband and I stopped at Sancho's for lunch. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon with not a lot of patrons so service was super fast and great. The food is delicious and really tastes homemade. We couldn't stop eating chips haha. I liked my husband's tacos more than my bowl, but it was a ton of food and now I have lunch for tomorrow woo! Both the red and green salsa are very nice and spicy. Everything tastes really fresh and I'm happy to come here when the weather isn't too bad and sit on the upstairs deck. I wish the view was better than the parking lot, but that's not Sancho's fault. My god, the bathrooms though. Please do something about the bathrooms. They could use some serious freshening up.

Yelp
Looking for vegan Mexican food? I use to frequent this place when my job still had their office down town. Really yummy vegan option- so good that it made me question if it was really vegan!

Yelp
Vibes are cool, service is sweet, the prices are high for tiny tacos with very little meat. but but but...the biggest issue (and the reason I'm even writing this) is they're serving all food in styrofoam- quite literally and verifiably THE MOST TOXIC PLATES AND BOWLS TO SERVE HOT FOOD IN. Y'all can no longer bury your head in the sand- we know for a fact that hot food plus styrofoam will absolutely leach plasticizers into one's meal. Poisoning people for convenience sake is 100% NOT COOL in 2025. Please change! Most people won't or don't care. Some do. Thing is - this doesn't matter if people care or not. Because everybody is being poisoned anyway!

Yelp
Had the nachos and I was not impressed. It needed more flavor or seasoning. Also had a frozen margarita and it was awful.

Yelp
4/5 Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Ambiance A great joint to bring friends on a Saturday and enjoy some live music. Our friends from the area mentioned we should try this place out so we obliged... We order chips and queso, along with their 3 count taco plate of bisteq. The chips and queso were okay, the queso was extremely thick and a little difficult to eat but the taste was yummy. The tacos were delicious and they came with rice and beans. They also make their own corn tortillas for the tacos which I appreciated bc they made everything about the tacos that much better! Their margaritas were "okay" as well, more sour mix and you can't really taste even a drop of tequila so I wasn't overly impressed. I should note that everything was a bit spicy, there are chopped jalapeños in almost everything so if you are a weenie about spice (like my wife) you will probably not do well with the spicy foods here but as mentioned the flavors are great. We were also delighted with a live band that was awesome and brought back some old tune rock n roll to our taco night. We will be back!

Yelp
We will absolutely come here again, and again, and again. WOW. I love it all. The vibe. The decor. The music. The FOOD. I didn't have a drink, but I'm more than confident the drinks are fire too! I am so glad we came here, and I can't wait to come back again! We came here and got 2 lunch specials and 1 taco plate with a regular order of nachos. I'm sitting in the car right now far too full, but I'll take it! Carnitas nachos were GREAT! No fake cheese here! Great refried beans on top of perfect tostada chips, real cheese, fresh pico de gallo, and the pickled onions. The carnitas were crispy and not too greasy, and I could honestly eat them all day. Some of my favorite nachos ever. I got the Pollo Adobado tacos, and you are just as surprised as I am to say that I very much so enjoyed their chicken tacos. The chicken was tender, it had actual flavor, and the TORTILLAS WERE MAGIC. Perfect thickness to hold everything in the taco, perfect size, light, fluffy (yes, fluffy), and just so well done. The kicker was the pork belly taco though. Y'all. Don't sleep on the pork belly tacos. Perfection. Wouldn't change a thing. Could not change a thing. Every part of that taco was perfectly executed. I couldn't eat more than 3, but the crisp exterior and tender meat bursting with flavor had me on piggy cloud nine. Unreal good. I really can't wait to come back. Plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options, friendly staff, great food, and lots of fun themed nights and weekends brunch to keep the masses happy!
google avatar

Caitlin T.

Yelp
New fave! Perfect little dive bar with amazing prices and great drinks. I haven't tried the food yet, but it all sounds delicious with lots of vegetarian options! Indoor and outdoor seating, good music - live music, too! Plenty of parking and seating, friendly staff and a bar kitty

Yelp
Josh Baca and Los Tex Maniacs are awesome! Two Friends and my husband and I enjoyed their amazing music last Wednesday night. We're from out of town looking for Tex-mex music and we were lucky, Josh plays that accordion so great, the evening was perfect. The carnitas tacos plate was tasty. Decay was our server and he was accommodating and welcoming. He made us feel at home with the friendly & welcoming hospitality. The margaritas are delicious & ambience made for a great evening.

Yelp
Another pre-pandemic favorite that didn't skip a beat; it had been ages since our last visit, so sadly we've been missing out. We had showed up to join some friends for the live music and some drinks, so the amazing meal was a real treat. The homemade rice, beans, and tortillas proved they still serve the best quality food at reasonable prices. The waitstaff was friendly, kept us well hydrated, and served us quickly. We sat in the outdoor area that night which was well shaded, breezy, and clean-ish. We will definitely return this cantina to our monthly rotation.

Elaine L.

Yelp
Stumbled onto this place and feel in love with it. We walked in and they had an amazing band playing on a Sunday night. The staff were friendly and attentive. Beer was served very cold. We ordered one of their nachos options and it was so delicious and enough to feed three. All ingredients tasted so fresh and were made with real cheese. Everything was priced reasonably. We will definitely be back to experience it again.

Yelp
Was in the area late at night and this was one of the only places open for tacos. It looks like a great place to drink and listen to music. Had I known this, we probably would've made plans to come here sooner, but nonetheless... I've had better at other places in the city. Prices weren't bad and the tacos were okay.

Elsa M.

Yelp
Great constumer service from Misty!!!! And such a great vibe!! Tacos and Billillo made from scratch!!!

Prashant S.

Yelp
The food is delicious and the place is great. Will go there again next time. Wish they'd open in Austin
google avatar

Brittany G.

Yelp
So cute! I'm an Austinite and this place is adorable. You can see city views and Kitty muse! I'm in love. Dani, the bartender, is a doll. Thanks for making my day!!
google avatar

Melanie S.

Yelp
Nice bar and cool second floor open air patio. They also have a short menu with tacos, tortas, and some of the typical apps like chips and salsa, queso, guac. We came here after the Battle of Flowers fiesta parade and had a great time since it was a beautiful day. The service was slow and our server forgot to enter in one of my friends orders until we got our food and asked about it. They were out of one of the other dishes and they recommended another, but not until a good amount of time had already gone by. So we got our food at 3 different times for a party of 5. I got the shrimp torta and my friend got the chicken tinga tacos of the day. I didn't get pictures of the rest! Both were good and we enjoyed it.

Yvette E.

Yelp
Food, drinks, waiter and bartender were great. I loved the ice cold drinks and fresh hot food. The service was efficient and friendly. The music and ambiance was perfect for a nice afternoon out.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
This is my 2nd time coming here, but first having the food. It's so delicious. The salsa tastes like they fire roasted the veggies right before serving it. The salsa, the beans, the tacos, everything has such good flavor. Has their own parking so don't have to fight for street parking.
google avatar

Shannon G.

Yelp
Low rating is mostly based on service. Food is consistently good here. Cool casual vibe. Service here is usually slow and lackadaisical, but it's not the kind of place you go because you're in a hurry. However, this last visit was off the charts ridiculously bad. Ordered a second margarita. Bartender wasn't busy and backed up. After waiting for 15min and not seeing our server, I glanced at the bar. Saw a drink that was probably mine. Waited. Watched. Another 10min went buy, and it was still sitting there. So I walked up there and asked the bartender, and she verified it was mine so I took it back to my table. At this point we are well past done and ready to leave. It's been at least 35min since we last talked to our server. The server finally appears after this long absence which cannot be explained by serving other tables because we are inside sitting with a view of the kitchen and bar. She hasn't been there to pickup and take anything. I see the bartender motion to our table to let our server know I picked up my own drink. She STILL doesn't come by to ask if we want anything. I ask another server to please close us out. She says she can't. Wait...Wait...Wait...Wait more. So I go up to the bartender and ask if she can check us out since they can't keep us hostage. She also says she can't help. Are f'ing kidding me? So I tell her, Look.... Somebody checks us out now or we walk out without paying. She finally leaves to go to talk to our server somewhere and wait another 5min. The server arrives to check us out. No apologies. No explanation. Total time since we last talked to her? At least 50min. And that's only because I forced the situation. Think how poorly managed a place must be to provide service this badly. And also to manage it so poorly that with a customer complaining the only response from other employees is, "Too bad. I can't help you. Just gonna do my job. You gotta keep waiting for her." Nobody thought to themselves they should bother to go tell somebody about what's happening. Foodwise, my main complaint is that their "chips and salsa" includes a decent size plate of chips unnecessarily pre-dowsed with salt and a thimble sized salsa "cup" that you would normally get a jello shot in. Can't dip a chip in it. And after three bites it's gone. And they refer to "guacamole" as "Avocado Dip". I expect that when traveling to other states but in San Antonio?

Emily S.

Yelp
This place deserves 5 stars!! Food and margaritas were great!! Best side beans I've ever had!!
google avatar

Laurie W.

Yelp
I love this place! I'll eat anything they put their pickled onions on, but I can't resist their nachos. Service can be slow but so friendly- just bring your patience. Oh, and if you have a nice dog, they're dog friendly!!

Cristina E.

Yelp
Danielle was amazing here at SANCHOS!! The food was amazing and the drinks she made were to die for. For her working by herself she made the experience super awesome. Come by and show her some love!

Steven M.

Yelp
I was really disappointed because this place used to be pretty good. I had hyped this place up to friends. Once we got there the waiter was no where to be found and we had to go downstairs to find someone. They weren't helpful in responding to questions we had about the menu, almost annoyed. We had a table of four and each of use had our own issues that night. Wrong drink, wrong meat in the dish , refusing to add a single taco to an order, and items added that were requested to be removed. On top of that, they were playing horrible music choices. Sever was short with us and almost pushing when they were still open for another two hours. Had a bad experience for a good place and won't be going back.

Yelp
Sanchos is the best hot spot for good food, good drinks and even better service! One of San Antonio's best hot spot

Megan R.

Yelp
First of all. MISTY IS THE BEST !!!!!! This is the place to be ! The best hangout for the pre-game or for the whole night. Very good margs and tacos are the bomb dot com! The service is always amazing because the staff are amazing! , I am always excited to come out to Sanchos

D R.

Yelp
The food and drinks are so good! I got the bistec nachos and a mango margarita and they complimented each other so perfectly. I want to try the vegan queso so I will def be back to try it.

Yesenia M.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting Sanchos and not only was the food amazing but so was the service!! Ene was my server and she was awesome! Great communication and very attentive! My friends and I will be returning soon!

Rae P.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere great food and drinks highly recommend. Margaritas and customer service are the best

Cecilia E.

Yelp
If you are in San Antonio on a Wednesday night, check out Sanchos for delicious food and a great band with a killer accordion player. My friends had margaritas and beef tacos. It must have been good because seconds were had on both the margarita and tacos. I had a wonderful torta with a portobello mushroom filling. It was meaty and spicy and if I lived in San Antonio, I would eat it every week. Everybody in the restaurant was nice and friendly but our waiter Dave (nickname: DK) made us feel like cherished friends at a backyard BBQ. Also a musician, he was very knowledgeable about food, Texas and Mexican history. Josh Baca and the Hot Tamales played Norteno, Country Western and Cajun tunes. They are all professional musicians who play in other bands. Each one could do a concert on his own; but together they are something special. Josh Baca could make that accordion sexy, funny, sad and joyous. We just had to dance, even though there wasn't much of a floor.

Miranda G.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I love to come here for the margaritas, the nachos, the empanadas and the live music. The service is always great and the atmosphere is always a good vibe. Has one of the best views of downtown from the upstairs patio.

Mark E.

Yelp
Best place for a drink and live music. I come here to hangout and listen to music and the performers never disappoint

Lachula C.

Yelp
Food great for late night eats if you want to sit down and skip a drive thru... margaritas are delicious and generous as well. Service tonight was especially great, Misty took such good care of us and papas our pug was obsessed with her. Big win. Thanks Misty!

Opal S.

Yelp
Yummy shrimp nachos; rn they are doing penny margaritas with an entree!! Great service; the ambience is super chill and laid back.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
We love this place! The drinks are fresh and great. The menu has a lot of option for all - vegans, vegetarians, pesctarians, and meat eaters. The ambiance is great with indoor and outdoor seating and it is pet friendly! We sat with Clarissa and she took great care of us! We definitely recommend!
google avatar

Katherine R.

Yelp
Sanchos is that place were you Uber too, go eat good Mexican food and get happy aka tipsy for the low. The vibes are immaculate they have good music, still a place to sit down have good conversation with friends. The service is fast I appreciate my food coming out fresh an and hot. The frozen drinks actually coming out frozen and not watered down. I've been here when the margarita machine is making them watery and they give me a warning instead of just serving it to sell it. Appreciate that! A good way to go downtown without being fully downtown.
google avatar

Anthony R.

Yelp
Heard about this place from a coworker. We had margaritas and pollo abodabo nachos. Everything was so good. It was nice out so we sat on the back patio which is covered. Nice chill spot for drinks and good Mexican food.
google avatar

Taylor C.

Yelp
Saw a review that said this was great- decided to give it a shot, man this did not disappoint!! Staff was super friendly and our waitress was great. Not busy at all when we went (around 8:30pm) so the food came out very quickly which was amazing. Chips and Queso had a different taste than normal queso- but I definitely loved it, should really try it. I also had an original frozen margarita (not pictured) which was really tasty and strong!! My two reasons for not giving this excellent place 5 stars: 1. I got spicy chicken tacos so I was expecting some spice- don't get me wrong... the chicken was excellent... however, one taco (sadly the last one I ate) was all pepper chunks and no chicken! Incredibly uncomfortable bite to eat after having four other amazing tacos! 2. For not being super busy, we ran out of water twice. The water cups are kinda small to begin with and the waitress walked by multiple times without refilling water.

Yelp
Every now and then you walk into place that makes you wish you lived in that city. If I ever move to San Antonio, it'll be because of Sanchos. With countless restaurants and bars in walking distance of our event venue, we still made it a point to grab a Lyft and make it back to Sanchos for our final night in town. Some aesthetics and the laid back atmosphere were reminiscent of a Mid-Atlantic/DMV punk dive, just cleaner. Both the food and drinks were on point and the staff is amazing. Their frozen margaritas are marked as famous, and while not always a frozen margarita drinker, I had to give them a shot...I was really cold and it wasn't the best move, but worth it. They truly are delicious, thick and smooth. For faster and not as chilling consumption, I did switch to traditional margaritas "with heat" and they do an amazing job of pairing the flavor for a spicy margarita using Haitian Heat. The 1800 Mule was also stellar. I unfortunately don't recall all the drinks my colleague tried aside from a Paloma, but he loved them all. Worth noting, they're also dog friendly which is nice to see when you're on the road missing your pups. Haran was our bartender on both occasions and he is a beast with the drinks, but also very attentive, friendly, funny and helpful. I try not to be complicated with ordering, but also had an overwhelming week and couldn't decide on things. It's awesome to walk into a place and be educated on options with intuitive food/drink suggestions. Lance was like a machine, hard at work and knocking out margarita batches, but we luckily had the pleasure of chatting with him (he's far better at multitasking than I) and learning more about the place. A final shoutout to the server with the pink bangs, I somehow, subconsciously made it my personal mission to always be in her way. She was friendly, fun and hilarious as well, I'm ashamed I missed her name, but she's awesome. My only regret is that we had pre-planned on our second visit to pick up koozies or other merch that we forgot the first trip, but our Lyft arrived sooner than expected and we failed. Luckily, I found they sell merch online as well and was able to order! The crowd was super diverse and I can't give you a recommendation on it being a good place for a specific occasion, it's just a killer place for anyone, compete with indoor, outdoor and rooftop seating. If you're visiting San Antonio, it's worth escaping the tourist rush to check out this place, or just go there every night of your visit. If you're a local...you know more places than I do, but you should still go here. Thanks to all the staff at Sanchos for the stellar food, drinks and experience! You totally made our week and brought loads of relief to a long work trip.

Yelp
First time here. Tried the carnitas mini tacos and they were on point! They tacos were made with homemade corn tortillas y hijo de su!!! The charro beans were point & the green salsa was great!! The Dos was ice cold & the frozen margarita dressed with tajín was hitting. ....took some of the posolé to taste later!
google avatar

Chelsy B.

Yelp
Music on Wednesday nights is awesome! Try the avocado margarita. Sounds strange but it is so creamy and good!
google avatar

Eri F.

Yelp
Food was delicious!! Everything here is tasty. I recommend the honey dew margarita and if you get lucky you may have Misty waiting your table. She is the best waitress in San Antonio. Not afraid to make recommendations based on what you originally order, and let me tell you, we are so glad we went with her suggestions. THANK YOU, MISTY for making our visit even better.

Yelp
Sooooo i love to try new places. Tried sanchos. Def trying tooo hard. Ambiance off. Never turned on the heaters. Lacked flavor. Presentation was ok. Nachos were too small. Portions were tiny. Tooooooo much onion. Server took too long to bring us anything. 5/10 at best. The price for the amount and quality of food. There are tooo many places in San Antonio. Maybe it's for tourists.

Yelp
Three words..... FRESH. Freaking. TORTILLAS!!! I am definitely a sucker for fresh tortillas and wanted to take a journey with my home girl while both of us are trying to take a crack at this Army Advance Leader Course gig. Much needed lil getaway for the weekend and eat some dope tacos! I am saw them on Yelp and their delicious thing of margaritas! My friend was more inclined for the margaritas while i craved for their tacos and see for myself the quality of said tacos. While on the smaller scale of tacos, one cannot deny the overall quality of flavor and Drew Carey would even admit.. The Price is Right! They had delicious sauces to compliment them such as their green crema and their green or red salsas. Mannn... so so good! The setup of the place is super fun too. Perfect for a fun hangout vibe, even if me and my home girl were just keeping to ourselves and taking in the scene. I had the shrimp and bistec tacos and hot damn! They were chef's kiss! Definitely would come back!

Yelp
The service we received here on a late Sunday afternoon was GREAT. We took a seat at the top of the restaurant - balcony patio area, per se. We enjoyed a nice cold beer and tacos. This was my persons first time and this choice in place to eat did not disappoint! Just a heads up, there are pieces of Jalapeños in the tacos and in the pico de gallo so if you don't do spicy, (like myself - which I was struggling), well now you know!

Adam S.

Yelp
Props to Misty. Rob and Sam, Meh. Cold brews and tunes. Good place for a good breeze.
google avatar

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Dive bar. Terrible ambiance. Progressive vibe. Wait staff was super nice and attentive. Pork belly tacos are incredible. The beans are absolutely amazing. Nachos were meh. Drinks were a hit. Margaritas were delicious. Mixed drinks were a bit weak.

Malorie M.

Yelp
Misty's was fantastic here at sanchos! The vibe she gave off was extremity welcoming and friendly. She was very attentive to us during our visit.

Yelp
Excellent Food and DRINKS!! I really enjoyed every second of it! I'll come back next time for the pork tacos.

Deanna M.

Yelp
