The 40 Best Resorts in the Caribbean: 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards

"Located on a powdery white sand peninsula, Sandals Grande St. Lucian seats its guest on the edge of Rodney Bay, the calmest waters on the island. Here, Over-the-Water suites built in Balinese style with glass-floored pools reveal the marine life below. For guests wanting more than the view of the life aquatic from above, the resort offers access to its waters to PADI certified scuba divers. Divers from all over the world travel to St. Lucia each year to witness some of the world's greatest reef communities and shipwrecks in balmy, crystal-clear waters. Experiencing one of the world's most comprehensive professional diving programs is a part of the all-inclusive package at this resort. Beyond the water, the resort offers land sports ranging from beach volleyball to croquet, table tennis to billiards." - CNT Editors

The Spaniard Review - West Village - New York - The Infatuation

"Going out on a boat for the day is great, but taking a 10-day cruise is far less enjoyable. In both situations, you’re out on the open ocean getting sunshine and not catching fish. But one gets you back to shore before you run out of limes for your beers, while the other leaves you with a shot glass from St. Lucia, a desire never to eat shrimp cocktail again, and the lingering thought that maybe you should have spent your money elsewhere. The experience is more fun when it’s casual and low-commitment, and we feel the same way about The Spaniard. The Spaniard is a bar on a busy stretch in the West Village with an extensive cocktail menu and over 100 types of whiskey. There are a couple TVs that show major sporting events, but this place is much more of a cocktail bar like The Happiest Hour than wherever you watch the first half of Knicks games. While the food is probably better than it is at that sports bar, it’s also considerably more expensive. Overall, you’ll have a better time if you use The Spaniard as a bar rather than a restaurant. We’re clearly not alone in liking The Spaniard for day drinking and for after-dinner cocktails with a group. The whole space - a big horseshoe bar with booths along the walls and a separate dining room - tends to be packed every night and all day on weekends. A lot of West Village bars get crowded, but they’re usually dark, small spaces where you lose your voice trying to yell over deadmau5 blasting from the speakers. The Spaniard, though, is a multi-room space that never gets too loud or dark, where you can comfortably speak with friends or even try to move beyond your “no new friends” policy. But the crowds that make this a fun spot to get drinks also make eating a full meal here a fairly unpleasant experience. The tables always seem to have reserved signs, even though some remain empty for hours, and if you sit at the bar, you’ll have crowds three-deep shouting “whiskey ginger” over your head throughout your meal. The Spaniard serves elevated bar food, like buffalo wings with duck, a ribeye with housemade steak sauce, and lobster toast - and it’s just alright overall. In most cases, the twists don’t actually make the dishes taste better - in the case of the wings, for example, any duck flavor is lost under the grainy, mild buffalo sauce. While some things are pretty good - like the patty melt - the prices all feel a few dollars too expensive, and $25 is more than we’re looking to spend on a patty melt and fries. Dinner at The Spaniard is generally disappointing, but perhaps that’s due to unrealistic expectations. We had (and continue to have) good times drinking at the bar, and we got ahead of ourselves thinking the food could be great as well. It’s yet another reminder that just because something is enjoyable in small doses, it doesn’t mean that more of it will be pleasant as well. Ten days chugging Pepto on a floating amusement park should have taught us that. Food Rundown Oysters Rockefeller These are pretty tasty, but know that any oyster flavor is masked by the melted parmesan. If you’re OK spending $18 for six very rich bites of spinach dip, add some hot sauce. Chopped Broccoli Much like the TV show Dexter, this grabs your attention at first, and then goes downhill. Pecans give it nice crunch, but it’s a really big portion that gets seriously salty as you work your way through all the feta. This could be a good starter to share, though, if eating something green makes you feel better about the burgers and wings on your table. Buffalo Duck Wings We’re usually disappointed with the results of our never-ending search for high quality buffalo wings, and the disappointment continues here. The duck wings are less meaty than their chicken counterparts, and the flavor of the meat gets lost under a ton of grainy, mild sauce. If you’re not a blue cheese fan, make sure to tell your server, because the wings come topped with crumbled blue cheese. Steak Tartare The tartare is very tender and we like the dijon that’s mixed in, but the brown bread crackers have a really strong flavor that overwhelms the meat. So either eat this with a fork, or just get your meat fix from the burger or the patty melt. Patty Melt Served with dry aged meat and some blue cheese, this is the best thing here, and should be on your table, as long as you’re fine spending $25 (with fries). Burger This is a very solid take on a fast food burger that looks like it came straight from a Mickey D’s photo shoot. The sauce on top causes the squishy bun to slide off and it’s tough to avoid spilling melted cheese, but just ask for a lot of extra napkins. And wear a bib." - Matt Tervooren

Sandals Grande has very mixed reviews when you Google the resort so I was nervous to go but loved it. Overall, it was the most amazing all inclusive we have been to due to location, food and overall experience. It is romantic and couples focused which we enjoyed. The pool side entertainment is great and helps break up the day, they also do a great job at the evening entertainment with a daily theme being offered. The food was fantastic especially the sushi, Italian and candle light dinner (this is extra but a private dinner on the beach). I would encourage you to make dinner reservations right away as they fill up fast. The breakfast food is okay but the lunch and dinner is great. The resort is long so I would encourage you to walk around of the first days to see everything. The staff is friendly but not overall warm. Please and thank you go a long way. The only downside is the travel there is not easy and a 1.5 hour drive from the airport. It was doable just not the best.

Exceptional resort! Just back from a week there traveling with another couple and we had the best time. There’s so much to do, the grounds, the buildings, the room, the beach were immaculate; and the staff are truly engaged and helpful. Even the workers who scour the grounds each late afternoon picking up the towels guests have left everywhere seem genuinely happy to be there. We really enjoyed the snorkeling (recommend bring your own gear) both right off the beach and on the daily 1 hour excursions (included – sign up early), the variety of restaurants, and the shows which were actually really good! The resort is just big enough and has everything you need whether you want a quiet relaxing day or a day long party. The water ferry was a fun option to get there and the best way to see the Pitons if you’re not doing an excursion there. Golfing at nearby Caps Estate was solid; well-kept grounds but just a few quick glimpses of the ocean. Make the hike up to Fort Rodney and enjoy the amazing views and a cool history lesson. Two tips to help navigate a couple of areas they haven’t perfected (yet): the times and dates for daily activities were often different between the app and the printout they give when you arrive. Trust the printout. And get reservations as soon as you can at the culinary desk which opens at 9:30am, especially for Kimonos and Gordons. Onto Sandals Grenada ’27!

My mom and I decided to take a mother daughter trip between Thanksgiving and Christmas to relax and unwind. Sandals Grande St Lucian was perfect for this! The resort was so beautiful and so well maintained. The food was great. The employees were very attentive and made the experience so enjoyable. ||Leana from the entertainment staff was absolutely lovely! Leana went out of her way to include us in activities, chat with us, and even had lunch with us one day. My mom and I have been to several Sandals resorts and this is the first time someone working there has taken the time to have lunch with us and let us really get to know them.||Mouka was also really great, and joined us for lunch too. He was very personable and we had a great time dancing with him at the white party.||Nyah’s fitness classes were a blast. She was upbeat, challenged us, but kept it fun. She was very accommodating with everyone of all ages and their limits.||I truly had an amazing week there and was so sad to leave. I definitely hope to return there one day!

This was our first experience at a Sandals resort and my husband and I are hooked! From the moment we arrived, we felt pampered. The sweet young lady in the concierge lounge helped us book all of our dinner reservations and gave us great advice on excursions. JJ's Speedboat Tour was so fun! Terrell was awesome and taught my husband to use the Hobie Cat boat. We got to know Vickie at two different eating areas and she took great care of us. The food was excellent, there were people everywhere eager to provide whatever we needed, and there was so much to do.

I wanted to write and commend the people and the Sandals Resort we stayed at. We have never been to a Sandals let alone out of the USA. What a great first experience!!! When we arrived at the resort, we were treated like royalty by everyone from those that took care of our luggage, checked us in, showed us to our room, introduced us to our butlers (we had the over water bungalow with a butler) we were kind of overwhelmed by all of the friendly staff and how helpful they all were. The resort was clean, comfortable, accommodating, fun and adventurous. Thank you for the hospitality!! Special shout out to the following people who made our experience top notch: Immer, Madonna, Kellyana, Sara, Cheryl, Kyle, Devon, Juletta, Antonius, Gemma & Ellone. Very special people that we will NEVER forget!!

This is our second Sandals vacation. We think St. Lucia Grande is overpriced and we expected a much higher quality resort experience. The property is older and needs to be updated and upgraded. The location is very good, and the resort space is well designed. We liked the activities such as live music, sailing, kayaking, and billiards. The Caribbean entertainment night was much too loud. It was nice to have 12 restaurants, but the food in general was very bland. We were surprised only a few of the staff were customer service savvy, and that many were aloof. Overall, we had a mixed experience.

Another wonderful Sandals vacation. GM Della was warm and welcoming at all times. The staff at the Pub offered excellent service whether we stopped for dinner, drinks or dessert Eva was always smiling. What stands out is her team, they all worked together to make our visits enjoyable. Loved that we found a quiet pool and quiet beach.

This was our 1st Sandals stay. EVERYONE provided outstanding service. The fire shows were phenomenal. Our Ocean view was breathtaking. When we come back, I want my same room. ZANIA.... very attentive, kind, and pleasant. she constantly checked in and made our stay even more personable. She made a cute towel heart with roses and a note that I will always keep. Thanks Sandsls for making our 35th wedding anniversary more memorable. I tried to get pics of everyone. Some I missed. Please forgive me.
