How to Spend a 24-Hour Staycation in LA’s Westside | Eater LA

"I’d note the newly opened Sandbourne for Marriott points members as a sprawling full-service hotel with a breezy stepped courtyard and ocean-view resort feel, anchored by Marelle (helmed by chef Raphael Lunetta); expect a large pool, modern bedrooms, and rates starting around $490 up into the high $600s." - Matthew Kang

Pros: Clean rooms Cutely decorated interior Friendly valet team Near the beach Cons: I am in my room now and can literally hear everything in the next room as if it were in my room. It feels awkward and it’s been hard to sleep. Some of the staff at the front desk have been rather cold and terse. We asked if the pool was open and the guy looked at us as if we were inconveniencing him and told us it was closed. So I asked about the sauna and he gave us directions. But it lead us nowhere. And we were too afraid to ask again based on the first interaction with him. Next, I ordered room service. And the prices seemed ok, but the meals were pretty small and bare. I ordered a shrimp salad and fries. But unfortunately the shrimp and fries were basically too salty to eat. I was able to rinse the shrimp off which helped. But the fries were just way too salty. So I called the front desk (there was no directory in the room so I had to google to find the number) and I kindly explained what happened with my meal and asked for a replacement. And he simply said “I’ll transfer you to the kitchen”. Then I hustled got a voicemail for the kitchen but haven’t heard back in over an hour. For me the price of the room where I can hear everything from my neighbors and food just doesn’t seem to be worth it.

The Sanbourne is in an amazing spot in Santa Monica with really nice and large rooms and design. The hotel itself is beautiful and the location couldn’t be better. The service, though, wasn’t quite what I’d expect from a Marriott. It felt a bit understaffed. When I asked someone to be careful with my bag, the first person didn’t seem too bothered/ said he couldn’t accommodate that, but another staff member stepped in and was much more helpful. There also wasn’t any service at the pool, which was disappointing. They told me my room was almost ready and that I’d be able to check in early, but it seemed like they purposely waited until 3 PM to hand over the keys. Overall, the place is great if you care about location and vibe, but the service definitely has room to improve.

Google
Overall very good hotel in great location. We had room 606 (executive room) which was excellent with an amazing balcony. |A few minor niggles;|1. No bath tub - appreciate this is very common these days but for such a large room, we felt this was missing.|2. Shower drainage - couldn't continuously shower without the tray flooding. Reported it in check out and they apologised and offered 10,000 Bonvoy points which was appreciated |3. No coffee machine or kettle in the room - complimentary coffee was available in the morning at the lobby bar but there is nothing like waking up and making your own coffee.|4. Complimentary breakfast for Bonvoy members - no lounge so breakfast offered in hotel restaurant and you are allocated $20 per person, however most menu items are above this and certainly by the time you add a coffee $20 is not sufficient. Service was however great and the breakfast potatoes were to die for!

The staff and service at this hotel were great, but the noise level made the stay impossible. I’m a Marriott Platinum member and usually know what to expect, but this location fell short. On a Sunday night around 10:30 PM, there was constant loud noise in the hallway on the 5th floor—yelling, loud conversations, doors slamming. Whether it was thin walls or guests coming back drunk, it was nonstop. I called the front desk twice. The first time, they said they’d send security; the second time, I was told there was no way to control the behavior. Unacceptable. A hotel’s basic responsibility is to provide a quiet, comfortable place to sleep. I couldn’t fall asleep until 12:30 AM because of the ongoing noise. While the service, rooms, and location are solid, the fundamental purpose of a hotel stay was completely lost. Beautiful property, but I won’t be returning. Very disappointed that Marriott allows this issue to go unresolved.

Google
We love to stay at the high-end Marriott associated properties and were excited to stay at this Autograph collection property but it wasn't quite as great as other stays. The location was amazing-close to the beach and to Santa Monica. The hotel itself was lovely with inviting places to sit and relax, inside and out. The rooms were a nice size and comfortable. The work out was room was well-equipped and we always appreciate the Peloton bikes at the Marriott-associated properties. However, we had no idea there was a steam room or sauna until we overheard someone mention it at the check-out desk. The main detractor for us was the hospitality. Eric at the valet stand was very welcoming, but aside from him, we didn't feel a great welcoming/hospitality vibe. Even when we were checking out, we didn't get a smile from the front desk or a "How was your stay?/We hope you enjoyed your stay". It left us feeling very under appreciated. Also, the $72/night for valet parking seems outrageous for that area with so many other parking options. After we paid the first night, we easily found an overnight garage that was across the street for $24/night.

Google
Excellent hotel - whoever rebranded the hotel as an Autograph Collection did a phenomenal job on the interior design. Excellent staff from the front desk to friendly housekeepers in the hall. Hotel has rebranded a few times so perhaps older reviews are included in the average. Great Marriott Bonvoy elite recognition - room with a view on a busy weekend and $20/day x2 guests for breakfast. Great area with tons of restaurants and doesn't get any better than oceanfront. Pool area was unique and a great vibe. Coffee maker up on request was Nespresso, always a nice treat.

Beautiful remodel of a hotel I've stayed in several times. Great location - within walking distance to shopping, restaurants and the Santa Monica Pier. The room had a partial ocean view, was very clean, and the housekeeping staff was very accommodating. From the valet outside, to the bellman, and the front desk staff, they were all very friendly and welcoming. I had a small problem with the billing for my room but after speaking with Santi in Accounting, everything was taken care of. He was very understanding and handled the problem quickly and in a professional manner. I highly recommend this hotel

Google
We recently partnered with Sandbourne Hotel for a wedding weekend, and the experience was great. The staff was attentive, responsive, and accommodating to both the couple and their guests. We hosted a private dinner event with the help of Esmeralda, Erika, and Alex, and it was the perfect way to celebrate the last night of the wedding weekend. As a planner, I truly value partners who are organized, communicative, and attentive — and the Sandbourne team made the entire weekend run effortlessly. Their professionalism and care created a seamless, memorable experience for everyone involved. Thank you and can't wait to work together again!

Yelp
This beautiful property is located near the Santa Monica Pier and only steps to the beach. There is a back gate to access the beach from the pool area. Our executive beach view room on the 6th floor was spacious and had an amazing balcony overlooking the ocean. The property has a cute pool and decent restaurant called Marelle. The common interior areas are excellent and relaxing especially with their high end outside patio areas. The staff here are very friendly and welcoming. The location is superb being on Ocean ave. We loved it here and recommend this lovely hotel.

Yelp
We stayed here for a friend's wedding and the hotel is beautiful, aesthetic and completely beach/coastal vibe that you imagine in Santa Monica. There is pretty of street parking if needed but only 4 hour limits. Otherwise lots of parking lots available but the nearest one fills up fast. There is valet as well but it's grossly overpriced in my opinion. The room was clean, spacious, and has a minimalist vibe. We got a corner, accessible room which was perfect with 2 young kids to run around. Our most utilized amenity? 100% the pool! With a toddler, we were there everyday for most of the day. The pool had a good temperature, and coming early, we usually got seats. The cabana spots are for reserve purchase. They have some covered lounge seating by the bar as well. The bathrooms here are so pretty good. Some Cons: + Bar staff was on and off sometimes + Towels were not replenished as fast as people needed them at times + Toilet was severely clogged one day where people kept flushing and it ended up overflowing which so close to the pool felt kind of icky There is also near direct access to the ocean which is really great. The area is quite walkable with the boardwalk and the pier nearby and plenty of restaurants and shops closeby.

Yelp
The four star rating for this property is maybe not quite deserved. The rooms are nice and the view - if you have one - is agreeable. But truly nothing extraordinary. And strangely it didn't feel particularly welcoming. We arrived early and the very nice bell person said he'd store our luggage but the promised text claim check confirmation never came and we had to help them find our bags. Not a big deal but seemed indicative of the level of care and organization. Also when we arrived early and asked about an early check in got somewhat of a chilly response. Again not a big deal - no entitlement to early check in - but would have expected a friendlier instead of a modestly chastising response. Location is a block from the beach. Fine but nothing special.

Yelp
Excellent location, service and rooms! The only reason for the 4/5 star rating on the rooms is because half of the rooms on the property have showers and the other half have tubs, so you may not get your preference depending on the occupancy rate. The location and beach access are unbeatable, the pool and lounge areas are modern and comfy. This hotel is full of texture and design elements that make it worth exploring and fun to do so. Parking is easy because it is valet and all you have to do is text valet 5 minutes before you need your car. Valet is professional and reliable each and every time. Front desk staff Lovit and Cash were attentive and welcoming. Eli delivered room service and was polite and professional. The on-site restaurant is convenient for breakfast and food is reliable, but with at least 30 restaurants within a 5 block radius, you should spend time eating out. This hotel is not necessarily cheaper than a 5 star hotel like the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey, but it is a well-run modern clean hotel adjacent to the beautiful beach and tons of restaurants. I highly recommend this hotel for business or family events, and romantic getaways.

Yelp
Very bad customer service, angry GM and horrible service Shady and unprofessional on top of being too expensive for the value !!!

Yelp
My friend came into town and asked if I wanted to stay with her at the Sandbourne Hotel in Santa Monica. She didn't have to ask me twice so I packed up and checked in on Thursday and checked out on Saturday. The hotel is an AC Marriott - it used to be Le Merigot back in the day. The lobby was beautiful, modern, bright and was nicely decorated. The room was big and accommodated us just fine. You can't beat the location - its right on Ocean Avenue within walking distance to Main Street, the Promenade, Palisades Park and countless restaurants and shopping, there's also access to the beach and bike path. You really don't need to drive your car unless you're leaving the Santa Monica area. Note: There is no self-parking and valet costs $70 um, no thanks. I found a covered and secure public parking lot within 4 blocks of the hotel and left my car there for an affordable $15 a night. Everyone from the people who checked you in, the servers in the restaurants and the ladies who are charged with keeping the hotel nice and clean could not have been any nicer. This is probably the friendliest staff I have ever encountered and I can't say enough good things about them. Special shout out to Julissa (sp?) who worked the coffee bar in the lobby. What an incredibly nice woman. It was so nice to come down from the room, sit have my coffee and chat with her. I stayed on the property the entire time, there was no need to go anywhere and it was a perfect Staycation for me. The hotel itself is not that big - six or seven floors, there's no rooftop pool or bar but I got over that quick. The pool was within close proximity to the restaurant and although I didn't lay out, it was nice to look at. There are plenty of lounge chairs and plenty of shade so I brought a couple of books, iPad and got up on all of my reading and writing. The gym was beautiful - it had everything you could want. Pelotons, treadmill, ellipticals and weights. It was nicely laid out, very modern and clean. For Fourth of July, we had some other girlfriends come out, we had a delicious dinner at the hotel, then moved on over to the lounges in the patio area, hung out, had champagne, watched fireworks and got caught up. I had just come home from a big hiking trip up north so this is exactly what I needed and wanted. All in all, it was a great time, a good way to spend the Fourth of July and good experience. I would highly recommend the Sanbourne AC to everyone. You can't beat the location and the most wonderful staff. I felt lucky to have stayed there.

Yelp
Pros: -catering desserts - cookies and lemon bars are delicious - and a decent selection of beers -cleaning staff great - kind and thorough -event staff was too notch and events were really well run. Good A/V -spacious rooms with cool design and colors -commendable gym relative to hotel size including a large yoga studio, foam roller, and ample machines for weights -all of the catering staff and general hotel staff are very very kind and helpful and prompt Cons -room attn to detail. Found two bees in one of my rooms - one dead and one alive. I think this was because some of the doors face directly outside so they can slip through the door crack -doors have a lot of empty space between door and carpet - so you can hear folks outside easily and clearly -walls between adjoining rooms are then - can hear your neighbor too clearly -pillows are terrible and offer next to no support - had four in the room and ordered two more with a specific ask for a dense/firm pillow but none of the six were supportive

Yelp
I only popped in for the Matcha martini, but that in itself gives this place five stars. Like where else in LA can you get a Matcha martini and on top of it? It was delicious.

Yelp
Stayed here over the last 4 nights. Crazy but this place has done a 180. Still a wonderful location, but had issues with hotel staff. Unbelievable. This was not my first stay at this location but it will be my last. I would recommend Shutters up the street over this place.

Yelp
I only stayed at the Sandbourne Santa Monica for a single night as we needed a place to crash closer to LAX from our extended trip to Joshua tree. The Sandbourne was a great choice having a good ambiance, prompt service, and clean+comfortable rooms. The breakfast credit for elite members was also great given the quality of the breakfast, but is priced as a larger city hotel breakfast will be priced... which is just a bit too high. We did use the gym that was very reasonably sized and equipped for a hotel so close to many other gyms and an outdoor running path. However, we didn't use too many of the other amenities such as the pool or the hotel bar given our short stay. It is quite nice to be very walkable to the beach and Santa Monica pier. Overall, I would come back to the property that was nice in a fantastic location. I can agree, it's not the best value for the dollar, but given the excellent location, I get it.

Salem K.

Yelp
What a mess!!!! Very poor service, horrible communication !!!! I have tried to resolve this with management and unfortunately it all made sense since the GM was addressing the whole thing poorly and mocking me over the phone !!!! Don't be in the hospitality business, If you are not courteous, professional and have basic communication manners

Victoria

Yelp
Currently staying here and by far the worst of the Autograph Collection hotels we've stayed at. Don't be fooled by the "no resort fee" lies. You will pay for it one way or another. We've had better service at hotels where we've paid half the price. They should take lessons from other hotels in the collection like Cavalier, EMC2, and the Adolphus. -Took forever to get our rooms even though the hotel seemed empty -Our "oceanview" room was actually a view of a parking garage. But don't worry, you can see the ocean if you look to the left or right of the hideous building -Staff is rude. I called down to get water and milk for our 16 month old - because our room was empty of everything, (not even an option to buy anything. Empty fridge, no water, nothing.) The guy at the front desk acted like I asked for his kidney before transferring me to the restaurant who charged me $27!!!!! For 20 oz of milk. Then someone showed up with two small bottles of water for 4 people, and when I asked for more was told to go down to the front desk and get it myself. -Poolside service has been atrocious- aside from the girl working on Thursday. It's been non-existent for the most part. If you do manage to get a drink from the cranky bartender who will go out of his way not to have to do anything by disappearing for hours at a time - it will cost you. Fries and a drink? $50-60. They also want to charge you $250 to use their tiny cabana- that by the way have been empty during our entire stay. But if you dare put a bag there, the otherwise non-existent staff will pop up to tell you you're not allowed on the empty bed in the empty pool area. -Maintenence (at least that's who he said he was) barged into our room while my daughter napped. They banged on the door and I asked who it was several times before a large man walked into the room saying I called for TV service. As I lay there in bed holding my daughter, I had to say I didn't call for service 3 times before he left. I was so unsettled by the entire incident that I had my husband come up from the pool to take us down -Restaurant is way over priced. $25 bucks for 3 pancakes? $8 for juice? Outrageous. Pretty hotel on the inside, but that's where the positive begins and ends. I wonder if they know the other hotels provide turn down service, cute little toys for the kids, fresh baked cookies and layed out robes waiting for us in the evening, incredible poolside service that doesn't cost half as much, etc.- aside from the smiles and wonderful service. No one should pay these prices for this hotel and service.

Yelp
We were subject to a mandatory evacuation order during the recent Los Angeles fires. A Marriott reservations agent got us a room at the Sandbourne. We were bowled over by how caring and responsive everyone who worked there was during that crisis. Everyone from the valets to the maids to the front desk to the restaurant staff went out of their way to make us comfortable. The hotel even waived its usual dog fee! The room itself was very comfortable. Good beds. Good blackout drapes. Great walk-in shower. The in-room dining menu is pretty limited. But the burgers were delicious. The breakfast menu in the restaurant offers a nice variety of options. My eggs and bacon were tasty. All in all, it was a very good experience during a time of crisis. We are extremely grateful.

Yelp
Stopped by The Sandbourne for a quick drink at the bar and was pleasantly surprised to discover the hidden gem that is Marelle. The ambiance was fantastic, and the food was excellent. Andrew at the bar was outstanding his hospitality, and deep knowledge of the LA area made for great conversation. Looking forward to coming back soon! If you visit, be sure to ask for Andrew he makes the best drinks!!

Baeti L.

Yelp
The valet team is amazing! Thank you Diego and melvin for treating us with kindness.

Yelp
Amazing property. Nicest hotel in the area by far! Up and down the coast, including OC AND definitely within LA city limits and all. Pool is nice and FREE BEACH EQUIPMENT. If there was 10 STARS I'd leave that!

Sara M.

Yelp
Their valet parking guy in particular one is so freaking rude. I know they are not part of the hotel but still affects their image. The place is super cute but not worth the price. Some things are just outdated or not clean. Overall super quiet hotel and kind of boring.

Alex V.

Yelp
My first option bar when I'm in santa monica!! This place has a very pleasing environment with an amazing set of staff. Alexis welcomed me at the bar, very friendly and super attentive. She made my drinks top quality, thank you for making my experience amazing. The cocktails here are delicious!! Every-time i come here it's enjoyable! Their Expresso Martinis are tasty. The ambience offers beautiful interior and pieces. It's a real treat coming here. Even at night time it gets more beautiful. One of my "to go tos" when I'm in this area.

Behrang F.

Yelp
I'll start off by saying that the hotel is very nice, and the staff are great as well. We were having a delightful time, until we got our bill with the hidden fee of $80 a day for valet parking. Upon arrival nobody told us that there would be a fee, let alone a fee that high. $80, even in this economy, is insane. It put a sour note on our whole trip, and made us never want to come back to this hotel. So if you have a car be advised that they will charge you and insane amount to park there.

Yelp
Prime location, very spacious room and close to everything in Santa Monica, I was not expecting this great hotel, I got to say I love the renovations and what a great taste and design, staff is super friendly. By the way one of the best Gyms I've ever used in a Hotel.

Yelp
Wow!!!! What a stay!!!! The most relaxing and delightful Hotel I HAVE EVER BEEN TOO!!!! Everybody was phenomenal!!! The whole staff!!!! REO at the Front Desk is a Superstar!!!!!! Crystal at the Front Desk is a Superstar!!!! It felt like home and I can't WAIT TO RETURN!!!!!

Yelp
Celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, my wife and I booked a stay at the Sandbourne. Just steps from the beach, the location is outstanding. From the architecture to furnishings, clean lines and minimal ornamentation frames a stress free vibe. The energy of the staff helps create an easy, laid back, but attentive atmosphere. In particular, at the front desk, a staffer named Yuri learned about our anniversary and seemed to go out of her way to make sure our stay was special. We were surprised to find a handwritten note and complementary sweet treats in our upgraded room. Another staffer named Cash was also especially accommodating. Everyone working here we encountered was warm and welcoming. We'll definitely look forward to returning as guests in the future, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Yelp
The Bartender Alex made me the greatest drink I've had in awhile...it was lemonade with a shot of Espresso!!! Kept me up half of the night... She's awesome!!!

Yelp
We stayed there before renovations and we liked it already but they did a great job with the refresh . The hotel is modern and neat . The space is beautiful and airy . The staff is fantastic ! Friendly and efficient. We had a wonderful stay and cannot wait to be back

Yelp
Horrible experience. The rudest staff I've come across in my 50 years of travel. I had an issue with the hotel staff & they had no concern with my complaint.

Yelp
Alexis and Steven do above and beyond phenomenal work when bartending. I always enjoy seeing both of them, knowing I'll get professional service at its Finest . Thank you Alexis and Steven. . . James from NM

Yelp
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the bar at the Sandbourne. My bartender Lexi was a pure delight. I wasn't sure what to order but I knew I wanted something light and refreshing. She recommended a drink and it was exactly that I was craving.. just the right mix of crispness and kick. Thanks Lexi! Will definitely be back next time I'm in Santa Monica.

Yelp
This review is for Greg and the staff that work at the hotel restaurant Marrelle. First off, the most patient person I've ever met in food service. Greg was super nice, helpful, and extremely patient when it came to my friend and I taking pictures of this beautiful restaurant. The food was really tasty and we would love to try other dishes in the future. But thank you to the amazing staff that work here that just bring a genuinely sweet and friendly vibe will definitely be back!

Yelp
A family member was staying this hotel and my wife and l dropped her off at the hotel. We wanted to take my niece for dinner at the hotel. The hotel wanted to charge $20 for us to eat at the hotel at 6:30pm. The restaurant and hotel looked deserted. The people at the hotel said parking and meter parking was $15-20 everywhere in Santa Monica. I went across the street and found the meter parking at $2.50 so l parked there and went to Fitoor. I spent $200 and the food was wonderful but small portions. How stupid of this hotel not to allow me to park for free.

M K.

Yelp
Probably one of the best stays I've had in a long time. From the front desk people, to the breakfast staff to the bellman, this hotel was exceptional. Shout out to Esmeralda who couldn't have made it a better experience. Huge thank you for the memories

Garret G.

Yelp
The Sandbourne Marriott is the most beautiful, cool, modern hotel in Santa Monica. Not only did my wedding guests from across the country stay here, they were well taken care of and have raved about the time they had at Sandbourne. We also had our wedding welcome party here and the staff was very accommodating and communicative in the planning process. The hotel staff was genuinely friendly and nice at every level. With beautiful new architecture and a pool with ocean views of the iconic Santa Monica beach, you can't go wrong!

Rudy J.

Yelp
I stayed in this hotel last week, when I got there I was looking for parking the valet parking persone mention to me that it was free part of the stay. When I checked out I got a bill for 160 dlls. i tried to get a refund but they said that ballet parking was not free I mention to them that there ballet parking person mention to me it was free manager said to me that there is no way that valet person said that. So pretty much manager called me a liar. This is so un professional of there staff and managers that work there
google avatar

Nordy 3.

Yelp
As a Bonvoy Platinum member this might be one of the worst Marriott locations I have stayed at. Your "upgraded" rooms are tiny, my bathroom didn't even have a fan, they didn't provide new towels and when I asked for some they tried telling me to come down and get them. For the amount this hotel charges they need to be better. The hotel was under construction and looked way worse than what is advertised. To top is off it was like asking a bunch of kindergarteners to get my invoice correct. Stay away and book elsewhere until management gets it together.

Yelp
Lovely hotel, terrific location, great service. Alexis in the bar makes a fantastic martini!

Yelp
Alina at the bar was incredibly professional and helpful definitely would recommend this bar , great hospitality.
