I stayed at the Sandman Hotel in Newcastle for four nights, and overall it was a mixed experience.
The location is excellent and probably the hotel’s strongest point. It is central, convenient and ideal if you are staying in the city for work or a short break. The hotel itself has a quirky character and the communal areas feel much more polished than some of the rooms.
Unfortunately, my room did not quite match that first impression. I was allocated a disabled access room which has clearly seen better days. The decor felt tired, with wallpaper, paintwork, carpets and general finishing all showing their age. There is a slightly slap dash feel to the upkeep, as though maintenance has been done quickly rather than carefully.
Temperature control was another issue. The room became quite warm, but there is no air conditioning. Opening the window did not really help, as I appeared to be near extractor fans. Not only was there constant noise, but there was also a lingering smell of sweet grease drifting in. It was not ideal.
The biggest frustration was the hot water. On the first day it took around fifteen minutes to reach a lukewarm temperature. Towards the end of the shower it suddenly became extremely hot, and adjusting it resulted in it going instantly cold. The second morning it heated faster, but after returning from a long day and attempting another shower in the evening, it once again took a very long time to warm up. The only way to speed it up seemed to be running all the hot taps in the room at once, which is hardly practical. It did make me question how consistent the hot water supply is for housekeeping.
Soundproofing is also limited. You can clearly hear neighbouring rooms, especially when toilets are flushed or showers are running.
On a more positive note, the bed was actually very comfortable. Firm mattress with softer pillows, which suited me well. I often struggle with hotel beds, so that was a welcome surprise, particularly as I was coming off a long stretch of travel for work.
Breakfast was underwhelming. There was a decent range of options, but some items did not seem to be cooked or maintained right.
For a four night stay, I was hoping for a room that felt a bit more cared for. It is a shame, because the hotel has personality and a great location, but the rooms and facilities need more attention to detail to match the price and length of stay.
