It was our first time here and let’s say we loved it. Atmosphere was pretty cool. I was surprised I had to take my shoes off to dine in the area we ate in. The server was very attentive and made great recommendations. We all dug in before I could get to many photos but believe me everything tasted great. If you’re in the area I highly recommend making it one of your stops!

Google
This place is so cute. The soup was great, and they had the best ginger salad I've ever had. The sushi was sushi. We had 2 really good rolls, but nothing really stood out. I was also disappointed they didn't tell you the names when giving you the plate. So I'm not saying the sushi was bad, but that same sushi at another place. I would expect to pay $11-15 at the most, not $17-22. I also didn't like that the prices are not offered on the menu but on a separate piece of paper.

Excellent sashimi! Best in Lansing area. Chefs' choice deluxe was fresh, served beautifully, and was high quality. Service was ok.

Google
It's good quality sushi, but you're paying for the fancy building, seating arrangements, and private rooms. I can think of 5 better places in greater Lansing, much cheaper, quality is equal or better. This is cute for a first date or holiday, but prices have doubled in the last 12 months.

Google
Fine sushi with lots of choices. We had the famous Godzilla roll, Fusion roll, rock and roll, Spicy Salmon roll and Volcano roll. The fusion roll is a deep fried outer, which is a departure from many of the other sushi. The green tea was also great. Call ahead, because the restaurant gets busy.

Google
Went in with some friends on a Tuesday evening. Our order for the appetizer was not placed and we had to remind the staff of it. Later, the beef bibimbap my friend ordered came out cold. My order for the Tempura and Vegetables was never placed. The food took over an hour to get to us with roughly 50% capacity. Our server might’ve been new. We assume so at least. But his refill policy was non existent. On water. Several of the rolls we ordered were enjoyable. But they seem to care more about larger parties. If you’re going with 4 people or less, spend your money elsewhere. The prices aren’t horrible but definitely juxtapose the service provided. In conclusion, I believe I would’ve received better service and comparable if not better food at any other Japanese restaurant in the city.

Stopped in to Sansu for a quick bite to eat on my way out of East Lansing. The restaurant is huge and right off of campus so it was mildly busy when we went. We tried some appetizers and had to get the crispy rice spicy tuna, a fan favorite. We tried a platter of mixed sushi, all were very good. The noodle dish was decent but I wish there were more noodles!

Google
Awesome rolls and sushi. One of our favorite things about this place is the floor height tables. When that section is open, we always sit there because you can take off your shoes and sit on a floor pillow to eat with friends. Unfortunately, it's not open sometimes due to staffing. You should try this place, just call ahead of you want to sit on the floor!

Yelp
Amazing, friendly sushi chefs! One of the best sushi restaurants in the area! Vegetarian friendly and clean restaurant. Can get very busy so come for lunch or make a reservation. Worth it though!

Yelp
Don't expect anything close to the quality of Japan or even a Japanese enclave like in L.A. It's hardly better than the sushi you find at Chinese buffets. Most things are doused in copious amounts of mayonnaise and green-dyed horseradish. And remember what I said about Chinese buffets? They also sell that Americanized food like sweet and sour chicken (for sure it's a real dish in China, but nothing like what they sell). The only upside is that they have an all you can eat menu. Not worth it unless you pay more and get sashimi though.

Yelp
Got there and the people at the reception were incredibly rude and dismissive, they seemed very annoyed when asked simple questions about seating. Aside from that, I cannot recommend the champagne roll enough! It was hands down the best sushi I have ever had. As for the spicy beef soup, I was a tad disappointed; the broth was lacking in flavor but the beef was amazing. Finally, the atmosphere was nice. Overall, I recommend this place and would definitely revisit.

Madelyn W.

Yelp
The sushi is good, particularly the spicy tuna hand roll. I just can't justify the price increase the roll used to be $8-9 dollars and is now $13 something which is ridiculous for 1 hand-roll. I think some of the increase could be inflation but not a $5 increase, that is ridiculous.
google avatar

Yelp
I have now been to Sansu twice and both times I have felt that the atmosphere and service is awesome, however, I don't think the food will blow you away. I got the Philly Cheesesteak Roll without jalapeños and the spicy mayo still made it very spicy. I think the prices are a bit high as well but you do get soup and salad to start which I enjoy. I think I just need to find what I like there.

Yelp
Super good sushi restaurant with A LOT of sushi rolls! Not a ton of vegetarian food but they do have a selection to choose from. Their appetizers have some good vegetarian options too. Their cucumber breeze gin cocktail was refreshing and delicious. We were there to celebrate a birthday and the staff were so friendly and accommodating for it! We also had some gluten free people at the table which they were able to accommodate with an issue! The interior is really big and can handle bigger parties without an issue.

Yelp
Very clean, nice ambience, great atmosphere. We sat in the traditional seating area which was a unique and fun experience. The staff is very friendly. The teriyaki beef was a little heavy on the sauce making it difficult to taste the flavor of the meat itself but still tasty. Sushi was amazing. 100% recommend.

Yelp
The best sushi in East Lansing and the surrounding area! It's a little pricey compared to some other sushi spots on Grand River and beyond, but it's worth it!! All of their rolls are delicious and their spicy edamame is amazing. Highly recommend making a reservation or getting there early since they do fill up pretty quick even on a weeknight!

Yelp
Sushi was delicious, servers were amazing and the atmosphere was spot on. I would go back in a heart beat.

Yelp
$7.00 for a cup of tea, really? Insulting to the customer, service however was wonderful, thank you Sophia. But really... ?

Yelp
My order was placed over the phone and was looking forward to trying out what I got. I came inside and it wasn't quite ready yet, but the service was spectacular. The place was clean and modern and had a casual feel to it that makes you want to sit and dine in there. I was feeling a little disappointed that I wasn't. I ordered the Spicy Spartan and it was phenomenal. The flavors were so great together and the right level of spicyness for my taste buds. I am totally coming back here again. There is so many other items that I want to try.

Yelp
Nice place, lots of windows and decent service. Prices are a little high for the area but the food is good. Last couple times I visited, my sushi was not very cold which I don't care for. Would also be cool if they had more roll options that do not include tempura. The majority of their rolls include something fried and I would appreciate more alternatives.

Heidi C.

Yelp
Sansu is our go to place for any kind of celebration! Our out of town family is crazy about it. I'm a Fusion Roll fan and get one every time. Love the side salad and tofu soup. We also enjoy take out on those nights where we don't want to socialize. Next week we plan to celebrate July birthdays! We've never had bad service. The staff is so welcoming no matter how busy they are. The cocktails are excellent.

Yelp
Food was fresh and good. Price point fair for quality, quantity, and flavor. We ordered the Sushi Deluxe, Salmon Teriyaki Bento, Sansu Stone bowl, Tempura udon, Double Salmon roll, Sansu roll, and the double spider. It was a busy Saturday night so service was a bit slow and our server was doing the best he can. But overall, we were enjoying each other's company as we waited.

Tim Q.

Yelp
It used to be good, but our dinner tonight, teriyaki chicken was disgusting. I can't cook well, but I could do better than this. Tough chicken, no sauce, disgusting soup. What happened? It used to be a great restaurant and now I will never go back because my meal (for $27.00) was really bad.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
We tried several entrees an appetizer and of course the sushi. Everything was delicious and beautifully prepared. The service was great and it's a nice atmosphere inside. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Elizabeth E.

Yelp
Overall, expensive sushi and not the best I've had- even in the area. If you're looking for good sushi at a reasonable price go to Uni Sushi right down the street. We ordered takeout and the staff was friendly and helpful, but our main problem was the menu- they had very few prices actually listed which ended up making our order incredibly expensive for just four rolls. The interior was nice and looked like a good place to dine in, but the rolls weren't mind blowing, especially for the price. One of the more expensive ones was heavily lacking in flavor. The wait was a bit long as well. A classy interior but the menu needs some work.
google avatar

Terry L.

Yelp
Excellent every time! Good service and I love the white tuna sashimi! Salmon Bento box is always good.

Sophie H.

Yelp
We were excited to have a sushi date and choose to go to Sansu. Unfortunately our experience was not good. We found a piece of plastic on top of our sushi and our waitress mentioned this happens and is "normal". We also found our sushi to taste off and not fresh. After spending $88 we expected a lot more from Sansu. We will not be back and would not recommend it.

Mike H.

Yelp
After ordering online a half hour before arriving to the restaurant to find employees standing around and finding out my order was not even entered. Without even an apology total time waiting another 20 minutes!
google avatar

Abby S.

Yelp
I love this place! The selection is INSANE (honestly a little bit too much--next time I'm going to read through it ahead of time). I've been here twice now and both times I've had good experiences. The sushi is some of my favorite ever, and definitely my favorite in EL. I've tried 5 different rolls and all tasted spectacular and most are at pretty good prices. The restaurant itself is nice, I have no complaints but it isn't anything spectacular. Same with the service, the waiters have always been nice and timely. I also really like that they also give complimentary salads and miso soup! I recommend this place to anyone getting sushi near MSU!

Yelp
This is definitely one of the more well known restaurants near Michigan State University. Its located right behind the dorms of East neighborhood, so I would say that its convenient given the location its at. The interior is set up quite nice. One side has a more japanese/korean style dining and the other are the regular dining tables. They have an extensive menu, on the front with the cooked entrées and the whole back side dedicated to sushi. I ordered the Sansu Tempura Udon for myself, and then we chose a few different rolls to share with the rest of the table. The Sansu Tempura Udon had a nice umami broth, not too salty but not too bland either. Just the right amount. The tempura shrimp was cooked perfectly with a nice crisp batter. However, I wish that there was more than 1 tempura shrimp. But I would say that it is worth having especially at that price. We ordered the baked scallop roll, veggie roll, and the Cosmo roll. The sushi was phenomenal! The Cosmo roll was probably my favorite one out of all three. You have the slight spice from the spicy mayo, the sweet umami from the eel sauce, a nice crunch from the tempura shrimp, and the burst of saltiness from the fish roe. It was well constructed and all of the flavors worked well together. A bit pricey for the sushi in my opinion but the quality was good. Overall, I would come back again especially to try new items. It's not the type of restaurant that a college student can go to everyday but its nice to treat yourself once in a while.

Yelp
Been coming to this place for about 5 or 6 years now, have not had 1 bad experience when coming here. Always get the Lobster Shrimp Roll when i come and its never gotten old.

Yelp
This has been a favorite for years and I'm so impressed they're still going strong! Food/drinks: I got the salmon and veggies. The fillet was meaty and fresh, and not too fatty. The veggies had a nice flavor to them. I also enjoyed unlimited cups of their house green tea, which was perfect for a cold evening. Service: Great! Despite that it was a very busy night (graduation for MSU), our host was efficient and very responsive. No complaints at all. Ambiance: I really like this place. The tables where you feel like you're sitting on the floor are my favorite (which is not where we sat this time but was fun to see nonetheless). Great experience. Great food.

Yelp
Sansu is one of my favorite places for sushi in East Lansing. They have great variety to accommodate all of your sushi needs. The selection can be somewhat overwhelming, but I don't think you can go wrong. It's important that it tastes good, but also how good the presentation is when it is delivered. Also enjoyed the garlic edamame (soooo good) and stuffed peppers. This continues to be the place I choose and tell my friends about if they are in the area. Also it can get quite busy so if you are hitting the dinner time rush or trying to get food before a show, make sure to make reservations.

Yelp
Nice large restaurant with a bar and Horigotatsu dining area. Sushi was really good and the salmon and tuna rolls I had healthy portions of fish and well made. Complementary soup and salad. Service fast and good as well.
google avatar

Casey M.

Yelp
Really good. I was surprised to find a place with this quality of Sushi in Michigan. I had the black dragon roll, as well as the blackened, tuna appetizer. Both were very tasty! The service was prompt, and very friendly.

Yelp
Mmmmmmmmuphummuuuuuhhh I love this sushi SOOOOOOOO MUCH!!! The Bloons stand no chance after I am nourished with Sansu sustenance #getrolledbloons

Yelp
This venue is possibly among the finest and most traditional Japanese eateries in the vicinity. Offering an extensive selection of sushi rolls, mouthwatering seafood options, and a variety of classic Japanese dishes, this establishment is a haven for lovers of Japanese cuisine. Every time I go, I have such a fantastic experience because the staff is incredibly friendly and caring. It's one of the reasons why I enjoy it so much!
google avatar

Yelp
Nicely served. Some good Korean dishes. Rolls are fine. Good service. Also take out works well - on time and same as honing in.

Yelp
Sansu has a ton of options for both sushi and non-sushi eaters alike. I was disappointed by the small selection of salmon-topped rolls. I was also disappointed by the bell pepper in my Vegas Roll - it totally threw off the mouth feel. The cucumber in my Cherry Blossom Roll was all skin pieces, so it was incredibly crunchy. I'm not a crunchy sushi kind of person so that was weird. The chicken curry was runnier than expected; using the spoon ended up just pushing the sauce around the plate and under the grate (the grate was unnecessary - we make katsu at home and never have issues with sogginess when plating on top of the curry/rice). There were about 3 potato's in the curry and tiny carrot pieces. Not what I would expect for $18. Plus the mound of cabbage topped with ranch was super weird. The waiter told us we'd get soup and salad on the house, cool, but then they never came. All in all, after spending over $80 here, I would rather go to a hole in the wall place and spend half the price and get food that I know I'll enjoy.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much from the exterior, but as an Asian American in a small town with few sushi options, this place is hands down one of my favorite locations back in my hometown. The quality is high and so is the rice to fish ratio. Cost is not very bad at all and it is a place that I went to when visiting friends and family back home. In the small city of Lansing where you have very few Japanese restaurants to get high quality fish, Sansu is one of few options I had so thank god it was so good! Definitely recommend!!!

Linda W.

Yelp
Food costs twice as much for poor quality and boring taste! Won't go back?!! Great server but food is soooo lacking!
google avatar

Paul Yelp N.

Yelp
Extremely good service with outstanding sushi and sashimi. The three of us sat at the bar where Sam the bartender who provided some top notch eager and friendly service. We enjoyed 5 roles, soft shell crab appetizer, and a couple of drinks at a reasonable price of $117 without tip. Kudos to the chefs on the other side. I don't know when we'll get back because my son is gratifying tonight. A little disappointed we didn't recognize this place until today. I guess football Saturday may be the next opportunity Please keep up on the great quality and service until then!!

Haiden B.

Yelp
Sushi was the best we found in the area! Service was good and atmosphere was business casual
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
Amazing food and service!! From the service when you done in or a carry out. Hot soup, fresh salad and sushi!

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Honestly overpriced mid sushi. I went during the happy hour and ordered a spicy tuna roll (it was like your average roll) and asked if they could replace the avocado with cucumber because of a food allergy they said yes but when I got the bill they didn't charge me the happy hour price. Their reasoning was that I had to pay for the cost of cucumber which is cheaper than avocado... I would like to mention the waitress never mentioned that until I asked about the charge. The sushi is mid and overpriced for what it is and the happy hour fiasco left a sour impression. I will not be going back and would rather go to Ohana sushi where it is all you can eat for a cheaper price. If you want to be overcharged for a ehh sushi experience you should definitely come here.
google avatar

Jayla W.

Yelp
me and my partner LOVE Sansu!!! Staff is always so kind and food is amazing. We went here for Valentine's Day and it was so busy so that it was like uncomfortable but any other time we have gone it's been amazing.
google avatar

Raksha R.

Yelp
It is always a wonderful experience at Sansu. We went for lunch and we ordered Maki Maki and volcano roll, both were pretty awesome but I love volcano more. They serve complimentary soup and salad which I always enjoy. Appetizer- Stuffed mushrooms were the highlight and we ordered Plum Sake and that was delicious!! Service was pretty good as well! I like that their pricing is not too high and they have a great variety of rolls to choose from.
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
This place is fun for the experience sitting in the japanese style seating side. Be ready to wait a bit for your food maybe because mastery cannot be rushed. I appreciate the fish quality better than most places in East Lansing, but I'm sure there are much better places if you go further south of Lansing. Friendly insight: a fun date night idea would be to shop sushi grade fish at Merts Specialty Meats, a family shop in Okemos, to homemake nigiri if you dont mind getting your hands messy!
google avatar

Jenni C.

Yelp
Everything about this place was perfect, from the smiling host who greeted us and immediately took us to our table to the friendly and extremely attentive waiter to the delicious sushi that was fast and fresh. We arrived after a 14 hour drive from Virginia and were so happy to have chosen Sansu for dinner. We loved it all!
google avatar

Pauline K.

Yelp
We arrived on a Thursday evening, waited 15 minutes for the hostess to even acknowledge us, (she was helping another customer with a take out order), then were told that they had a 30 minute wait to be seated. (Although we had seen several people finish and leave their tables while we were waiting). We ended up going somewhere else

Yelp
Me and my family have gone here for countless years and it never ceases to amaze me. If you picked one thing on the menu I would guarantee that it would be good. Mainly I just got sushi, rockin roll is my personal favorite, but there are a whole slew of other options that are just as tasty. Service is quick and the waiters/waitresses are very nice.

Jonathan H.

Yelp
Sansu is consistently at the very top of restaurant choices in the Lansing area - outstanding food, outstanding service, all leading to an outstanding experience. I've been never been disappointed here and I am a long-time, regular customer. They are the best, bar none!
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
The food was delicious but the service was cold. The host didn't greet me and the bartender was super frigid. I ordered two sushi rolls, fiji apple sake, and some spring rolls off the Happy Hour menu and was pleasantly full. I would have liked to ask some questions and order a to-go but the bartender prioritized her phone over the 3 guests in her section. The decor is simple and sophisticated. Seating is broken down into counter top by the sushi bar, regular dining, and traditional dining. There is also a very small bar which was mostly used to serve beverages while people waited for a table. The bathroom was a bit janky with duct tape covering the large gaps between stalls. About half the patrons were dressed up and the other half just wore street clothes. Sansu is a nice restaurant with outstanding food but the unenthusiastic staff who couldn't muster a forced smile and simple greeting really put me off.
google avatar

Sofia S.

Yelp
There's a reason that Sansu has been voted "Best Sushi" for eight consecutive years. Seriously some of the best sushi in Michigan! Fresh ingredients with plenty of classics, and also innovative flavors. Like another reviewer pointed out, the mango passion roll is DELICIOUS. I always have a good dining experience when I come here. Word of advice though: it's popular, so maybe don't come when you're starving, because depending on the day and time, you might have a bit of a wait.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Sansu has always been my go-to sushi place during my college days and now every time i'm in town. They offer unique and unusual combinations. I love love love their avocado boat appetizer and order it close to every time i come here. I am pretty basic when ordering sushi but every roll i eat is great and my friends have said the same. would highly suggest the avocado boat appetizer, the samchee roll(salmon, avocado and mozzarella cheese in tempura roll), the Devil Roll (shrimp tempura, crab salad, avocado, spicy sauce and eel sauce), and your basic spicy California roll and shrimp tempura
google avatar

Maya B.

Yelp
Went close to closing, but the service was exceptional! The tatami section (traditional seating area) seems to fill up quick. Portion sizes are great, flavors were top notch, and definitely worth the price. The menu is extensive, I have no doubt sushi lovers and non sushi lovers can find something they will enjoy (lots of bento box options) Definitely coming back to try the appetizers and other sushi!
