The Best Hotels and Resorts in Europe and the UK: The Gold List 2025

"I vividly recall my first visit 12 years ago to Hotel Santa Caterina: dips in the sea and in the saltwater pool at the edge of the cliff, accessed by the most beautiful lift in the world. We had fresh mozzarella for breakfast, lemonade, and all the sfogliatelle we could eat. I was enamored with the ceramic floors, the breeze swaying the vaporous curtains, the ever-smiling staff serving delicious fresh pasta and fish. In short, I fell in love. On a recent return visit to Portofino, I saw how the hotel has grown. Two new villas have popped up, hidden among the terraced gardens that dot the cliffs. The hotel is now a sort of albergo diffuso, with an increased number of rooms and ever more privacy for guests who want it. Everything else remains perfect. The pool is still as salty and relaxing, the curtains dance the same waltz with the breeze, the floors still sparkle. Santa Caterina is—and always will be—a dream. From $490. —David Moralejo" - CNT Editors

High Drama in the Seaside Hotels of the Amalfi Coast

"The Santa Caterina is an absolute classic. Family-owned for the better part of a century, it sits high on a hillside facing the sea and the town of Amalfi — guests ride an elevator down to the hotel’s private beach, for the ultimate storybook Italian-coast experience. Santa Caterina is the real deal: the grounds are all terraces, olive groves and lemon orchards, with the kind of jaw-dropping views that make the Amalfi one of the world’s most special places." - The MICHELIN Guide

Glicine

"Situated just outside Amalfi with the elegant Mediterranean landscapes of the Amalfi Coast as a backdrop, this fine-dining restaurant at the beautiful Santa Caterina hotel is perched above the sea and boasts stunning views and a tranquil ambience. Talented chef “Peppe” Stanzione from Salerno is at the helm here, having gained experience in renowned Michelin-starred restaurants in places as far afield as California, Australia, China and Thailand. While his passion for Asia is obvious in some dishes, it is the flavours and recipes of Campania that are to the fore, combined with other more exotic influences. Examples include the delicious tuna cooked in an infusion of sake and soy sauce and accompanied by smoked aubergine cream topped with crispy saffron onions and yuzu. There’s also a good choice of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes." - Michelin Inspector

Gift Ideas From Around the World: The Best Presents Our Travel Editors Have Ever Received

"My husband bought this Bvlgari perfume—for both of us, not just me—this past Valentine’s Day. It’s the signature scent of the toiletries at Hotel Santa Caterina, in Amalfi, where we got married about a year ago, and just a spritz of it brings us back to that time and place."
