Roadtripping Through the Land of Enchantment | Bon Appétit

"The next morning I grabbed a breakfast burrito fromLoretta's Burrito Hut, which was recommended to me by a few locals. I embarked on the three hour drive to my next stop, Santa Fe. My aunt lived there when I was growing up, and I’d visited her numerous times. They were some of my first trips ever outside of New York, and the dried out arroyos surrounding her barn were so foreign and exciting to me. Jim had told me that Santa Fe had been built up dramatically in recent years, and he was right. The arroyos where we used to ride horses through were now covered with private roads and adobe-inspired mansions. Still I revisited the Plaza where I have memories of walking around with my family, and I drove up to a high point where we used to ride to catch the beautiful sunset." - ByLaura Murray

We've been eating at The Bite since they were out at Bobcat Crossing. They're more than just a burger joint, and have great fish and chips, chicken, and New Mexican faves. If you're in the mood for beef, try the steak sandwich. Perfectly cooked and dressed with onions and chipotle aiolii - it's delish! I ordered a side of cole slaw and a prickly pear cider to go with it. My dinner partner had the patty melt and said it was yummy. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and if you have room, the desserts are awesome!

They serve an amazing hamburger. I grew up in a family where we bought and butchered our own cow every year and the flavor from this meat reminds me of my childhood. There are only a handful of restaurants in this town that serve good quality beef and this is one of them. The wait staff is awesome and everyone that works here seems to be really happy, and thats the kinda place I like to hang out. They always get me with the banana cream pie or a milkshake, I just can't help it. I have never been disappointed.

In a group of 8 people, at least 6 of us ordered burgers, and most of those were green chili burgers. I had the small green chili cheeseburger which was outstanding. The restaurant was very busy and it did take a while for anyone to get around to taking our orders. Once they did our food arrived relatively quickly. Always a fun place to get a good meal.

Santa Fe Bite is one of my favorite places in all of Santa Fe. I’ve been coming to Bobcat Bite since I was little and it was still all the way out on the old highway. Bonnie is the most amazing owner and treats us like family! I love coming here with friends and family. The food is always so consistent and fresh and the desserts are to die for!

The moment you walk into this place, there is a feeling like you are at home. Maybe because of all the plants and I'm such a plant parent. Other than that very spacious friendly and delicious food. Mind you this was a first for me and a couple of my friends. This lovely place was introduced by some good friends of ours and we went together and had a fun time. This will definitely be our go to when visiting Santa Fe and it's a must.

Google
Our family has breakfast once or twice a month here and it is usually good. Every time we have breakfast there is at least one issue, eggs are not cooked right, the orange juice taste rancid/sour and less sauce on the Eggs Benedict, consistency seems to be an issue. We do voice issues to the wait staff and usually it’s resolved quickly BUT for the price of breakfast it’s just not sustainable for our family anymore. Also, we never enjoy the larger tables with children blaring their games on iPads or tablets. We go out to enjoy the ambience of the restaurant and the food.

Google
Best burger in town... its hard to find good quality meat in santa fe, most places suck and choose profit over quality... This is a high quality burger and I order it 99% of the time. Breakfast burritos are good too, but I suggest substituting hashed browns for potatoes... Good stuff!

Google
While passing through Santa Fe we found this little spot to eat and it did not disappoint! Food was incredible and cooked perfectly. Food was cooked and brought out to the table incredibly quick. Our waitress was very sweet and on top of everything. So glad we didn’t miss out on this delicious food. And the Route 66 and dinosaur decor was super cute! They also had a chalkboard in the restroom to leave compliments and notes. Would definitely visit again.

Yelp
I drove by it as it's one of the first places in the strip mall, then walked by it, and only after I saw a hand full of people (locals) coming out did I even know it was a restaurant. Inside is nicely decorated and clean. It was busy and yet I was promptly greeted and being alone I sat at the bar. (No screaming kids, which is always nice) The wait staff was great. It was about 1 pm so late lunch hour, and everyone was great. If they weren't waiting on someone they were busy tidying up. The 10 ounce chile cheeseburger is huge, and the homemade bun was wonderful. Best one (out of 5) I've had around here yet. I'll come back for sure.

Yelp
This spot was recommended by a friend. We were seated quickly. The food camp out hot and perfectly cooked to order, the homemade chips were a pleasant surprise. If you are wanting a good juicy burger this is your place. Very casual environment

Yelp
We just discovered this gem. LOVE the Chopped Veggie salad (we add chicken). We keep coming back for that. The staff has never failed to be welcoming and helpful. :) The fish & chips special looks amazing & not greasy -- but I had my tastebuds set on a burger today, so another time! I took off a star because I think, for its location, it's expensive (example...burgers: $12.50 for 6oz to $27 for 15oz) BUT I will say it's ALL TASTY! And worth the occasional splurge. They seem to have a loyal local following, which says a LOT for consistency. ;)

Yelp
These types of restaurants are far and few between. The ambience and lighting were welcoming. Staff were extremely friendly and the owner of this restaurant went around the customers tables to check in on them. The food: the meat was extremely fresh tasting. We had the posole and it was very flavorful. Fries and chips were very tasty. On to the dessert- homemade and amazing. So so good!! The banana cream pie was to die for. Will be coming back!!

Yelp
We were so impressed the first night we ate here that we went back for a the next night, and it was amazing as well! We ordered the fish & chips on Friday night. The cod was fried perfectly, crispy w/o being greasy. Loads of fries and a serving of Cole slaw, which was so different from the regular mayo based slaw. It was a bit sweet & tart and flavorful. We also took a piece of strawberry cake to go to eat later. But we were so full we didn't eat it til the next day and it was still so moist and fresh it seemed like just baked. The 2nd night we ordered green chile cheese burgers, served w homemade potato chips. The regular patty is a 10 oz, but we opted for a 6oz instead, and w the chips, and the fresh toppings of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, it was more than enough. We order green chile cheese burgers at every restaurant on every trip we make to SF bc we can't get good green chile in Texas, so we've eaten many. These were by far the juiciest, most flavorful ones we've had in SF. Our only regret here was not staying in SF another night so we could try more of their entrees. Next time, though, I'm coming back & saving room for another homemade dessert! Service was excellent and both times our servers were friendly & efficient. Thanks for two great experiences!

Yelp
If I could give a zero I would. We accidentally walked in the wrong door and were greeted with disdain and rudeness. The rude woman that greeted us informed us that "most people don't read anymore" that's why we did not see the sign that was behind the wide open door to the restaurant. Thank God we did not attempt to try the food!!! Please don't accept rudeness, no matter how good the food is.

Northfield K.

Yelp
Good green chili burgers and good service. Easy to relax in clean environment All staff was friendly.

Yelp
On vacation in town and was looking for an easy kid friendly meal from a local place. Loved the chicken tacos with rice & beans. Rice was a bit plain but with their salsa it was . My kiddos burgers were scarfed down fast because they were delicious! Wait staff was great! Friendly & and fast. Highly recommend!

Maria P.

Yelp
Delicious hamburgers and local beer! Service was friendly and fast, we travel with a dog and they were very accommodating and friendly to our furry baby! Highly recommend this place

Yelp
STILL the famous Bobcat Bite Burger I've been eating the amazing Bobcat Bite Green Chile Cheeseburgers for 31 years; the location from the older (and quite eclectic) location off the highway didn't change these great burgers. I dined last night with 12 from the Santa Fe Foodies, as I have for decades. I ordered the amazing GCC (Green Chile Cheeseburger) med rare, and it was as good as it was three decades ago. I think 10 people at our party ordered this, and everyone seemed to agree it's a classic. My wife had a Patty Melt, which was outstanding! The service by Ashley was fantastic; a plus was that we got our drinks ordered by the previous owner, Bonnie. It was so lovely to see her smiling face; it brought back many memories. All the food came out at once and was perfect. Unlike the old days, Santa Fe Bite serves some yummy desserts, too (in the old days, lollipops were the only offering; they wanted you out so they could serve more burgers in what was a tiny restaurant). Today, in the new location, it's huge compared to an outside setting in nice weather. Carrot Cake and Lemon Curd cake are very good. There is a reason Bobcat Bite is featured in the famous "Hamburger Nation" film and Food Networks #1 best Ever GCCB, don't let the newer name confuse you: this IS the Bobcat Bite.

Yelp
Want a really thick and juicy hamburger? This is the place to go. In addition, great breakfasts and plenty of choices to suit your fancy. Bring reading glasses so as not to miss anything on their extensive menu. Once orders are ready, the staff will serve everyone at once so the food is still hot and fresh. Lots of ambiance with an old coffee roaster sitting just inside the entrance. Yes, they sell their own roaster coffee too.

Yelp
Wonderfully prepared burgers my wife and I had. We both have experience in food service and the chef prepared our medium and medium rare burgers to perfection. Makes me look forward to getting their steak.
google avatar

Elena R.

Yelp
We went for brunch and the service was super prompt + the waitress was very kind. The chilaquiles were actually the best I've had since they were fried to perfection. I got them Christmas and the green chile was particularly awesome. I'll definitely come back again when I'm in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Simple, really good food. The burgers are the best in town; big and juicy! The Chicken sandwich is terrific, especially when loaded with green chile. Don't expect fancy, but you'll get your money's worth and you won't go hungry after eating here, the staff is pleasant and helpful, especially Diane. The place is where you can go when you're really hungry but you just want to go in your jeans and enjoy a burger without all the pretense of so many of the local restaurants. The restrooms are clean and have chalkboards where you can leave your thoughts...good or bad. Mine were good!

Mariejune D.

Yelp
Great service and food was awesome . Love all the decor and staff were friendly and attentive. great stop if your in santa fe

Yelp
Fast service. Went for the veggie burger and it didn't disappoint! So good! Recommend!

Catherine R.

Yelp
I really like this restaurant. We've eaten in the restaurant and taken takeout. It's always good. I had fish and chips on Friday and it was very good. The burgers are great although rather expensive but worth it.

Yelp
Food was just okay, like diner or luncheonette stuff. Most of it was hot but a couple of our dishes were not. The big problem here is the staff. They are rude and confrontational. Forget in a half full dining room that our server walked past us several times without ever acknowledging we were there let alone taking our order or that when she finally did come over 20 minutes later, she couldn't be bothered to look at anyone while we asked for what we wanted. (I guess our being there was an inconvenience to her). But there is a sign at the front counter that says there is a surcharge for not paying cash. Fine. What is it? Not one person could tell us. One person said it's on the menu but she couldn't find it after several minutes of looking and she was supposedly the one who wrote the menu. Everyone was bordering on obnoxious that we didn't just accept this seemingly arbitrary fee and like it. So there's this unknowable extra fee for using a card. Turns out on the bill it was 20% Never. Again. Santa Fe Bite can go right ahead and bite me. They've gotten all the $$$ they'll get out of me.
google avatar

Yves M.

Yelp
All went well! Taste fantastic cooked to perfection the burger came with all the ingredients and the house chips are superb! Had to have a piece of pie for desert (was kind of a millionaire cake) made in house! What a treat! Ate the whole thing in my car, made it even more special!
google avatar

Brenda R.

Yelp
Everything was amazing with the exception of our rude waitress. The other people working at the restaurant were so nice. I know everyone has a bad day, but I don't think this was a one off for her. Go for the food and pie, oh my!!
google avatar

Beth W.

Yelp
They have really good juicy sloppy burgers. We've had the green chili cheese burger and the patty melt. Yum!! They also have great fish and chips, sandwiches, homemade french fries, and a great wedge salad. They have great homemade soups too. They have great made in house desserts baked fresh daily. My favorite is the banana crème pie. So good. The only thing I don't recommend is the onion rings which they don't make fresh. Everything else is hands down amazing.

Matthew K.

Yelp
It's an amazing place. Lots of care has been put into the aesthetics. All the food is great EXCEPT for the steak. It is the most expensive thing on the menu, but its a five dollar steak at a 30 dollar price. Horrible cut of meat, thin and tough... almost too tough to eat. But everything else is perfect and I'll be going back over and over, but I will not order the steak until they actually get a decent thicker cut and quality meat. I know it is very difficult to run a restaurant. Your overhead is ridiculous and you have to cut as many corners as possible. My family owns a couple of restaurants in Dublin, Ireland - and cutting quality to make ends meet is a great temptation. But reputation and word of mouth is far more important. Every employee must bring their "A" game and at least pretend to love the customer. Take the time to do the extra research and get the best quality foods that you can - especially with high-dollar items like steak. Follow the reviews carefully and respond to each one and take notes, have meetings with staff regularly to discuss improvements. Doing these things and acting on them will move you from a restaurant with a decent or good reputation for this or that - into LEGEND status - if you are patient and determined!

Phil K.

Yelp
Hadn't been to Santa Fe Bite in a while so decided to stop there for a green chili cheeseburger the other night. They truly do serve up one of the best green chili cheeseburgers I've ever eaten, and our burgers on this visit did not disappoint. My dining partner ordered the smaller burger with cheese. While she enjoyed the burger, after she took a few bites she realized there was no cheese. She also ordered sweet potato fries which came out barely warm, limp, and had a bit of a burnt taste to them. While we both enjoyed our burgers, sometimes the little details can make an enjoyable dining experience just "okay". When it came time to pay, I noticed that, like other restaurants in the Santa Fe area, Santa Fe Bite has added on an up-charge for credit card payments. In a world where plastic is becoming the norm as a method of payment, this might seem like a good idea for the restaurant owner, but is a short-sighted scheme in my opinion. I've talked to servers in restaurants that add on this cost, and servers typically feel that customers counter the added cost by skimping on tips. I don't eat out as often as I used to because dining costs have escalated so much in recent years, and in light of that, I've opted to avoid dining at establishments that penalize me for card payments.

Yelp
This was the rare (and I mean exceedingly rare) restaurant that we actually visited twice while we were in Santa Fe. The reason: their green chile cheeseburger is pretty much as good as everyone says it is. Definitely in a death match with about two other places for the title. We also had a number of their other entrees (pork chop, BLT, steak sandwich, etc.) at this casual, pleasant restaurant. Everything else was pretty good as well, if not special. Their cakes/pies- not our thing. And missed out on their shakes which we heard a lot about. Oh well, next time.
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
Well now, when I ordered my meal, I asked for a double meat burger. The server looked at me with an odd look. When the food came, the burger was huge. I ate it with a knife and fork. It was actually really good. The ambiance was pretty interesting.
google avatar

Shih Fa K.

Yelp
Had a good Green Chile Cheeseburger and a Veggie Burger here. My only complaint is that I felt that the taste of the green chile could have been stronger. The Veggie Burger, made from beets, was surprisingly delicious, and even though I am not a fan of beets, I really didn't detect a strong taste. The service was quick, and the ambiance had a coffee shop vibe.

Doug G.

Yelp
Terrible! Very bland burger and French Fries.... I asked for sautéd onions and got a slice of onion instead. The fries tasted like cardboard.... I can think of a half dozen other places that I'd recommend instead of SF Bite..... Disappointing.
google avatar

Wendy S.

Yelp
We were looking for someplace locals would go to, and heard great things about Santa Fe Bite. We had a great meal. My mom and I split the chicken club and cheesy fries - plenty for both of us and delicious. The avocado was so flavorful, with the little kick of pepper jack cheese and a super fresh and juicy chicken breast, yum! My dad wanted chili , but he confessed that the cornbread was the shining star. My uncle got the chicken enchiladas, and he was happy with his choice too! The staff was observant without being intrusive, and we can see why it has such good reviews!

Pf L.

Yelp
When was the last time you had a real "homemade" biscuit? Not those frozen things most places serve, but a fluffy biscuit that is dense and moist in the middle...with sausage green Chile gravy...homemade? And crispy hash browns and 2 eggs. Order the gravy on the side so you can slather 1 of the 2 biscuits with butter and jam and wash it down with house roasted coffee. Then pour that gravy on the eggs and hash browns and mop with the 2nd biscuit. Anything better than that? And if you still have room (or don't) there is a whole list of made pies, cakes and cookies! Of course, if you're not into breakfast for whatever reason, you can always get their seriously famous green Chile cheeseburger...with fries. Service and atmosphere is mucho friendly, food is top quality. This is a Santa Fe gem a little off the beaten path...known mostly by the locals. ..

Erlan M.

Yelp
The host was hot (the male one) also good food tastes amazing and really good quality
google avatar

J Warren R.

Yelp
Friends said this was the best green chili cheeseburger in town. It was good. But missing that "wow" factor for me. Onion rings were exceptional. Fried sweet potatoes delicious. The chips that accompany every burger are among the best house made chips around. Substantial bun holds up to the meat. Note: There are two options a 10 ounce burger and a 6 ounce burger. That is not clear on the menu -- be sure to ask if you prefer a smaller but still significant meat portion.

Eric K.

Yelp
Great food, great staff, great location, great atmosphere. What took off a star is that for some bizarre reason they put cheese on top of their omelettes, rather than inside. Putting cheese inside an omelette helps bind the fillings together, so everything doesn't spill all over the plate when someone attempts to take a bite. This is really a very odd way of making an omelette, I'm not sure what they were thinking...
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Best burger and bun in town. Friendly staff and all round good menu. A local find. Spacious too.
google avatar

Nancy V.

Yelp
Buffalo burgers done just right. Juicy. Good gluten-free buns. Outdoor seating was very nice for our puppy

Jeffri W.

Yelp
The absolute best burger in New Mexico. Why does Yelp require 85 characters to post a comment?
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
A busy place on a Saturday still made room to greet me cordially, ask about seating preference, and get a libation going quickly after arrival. Lots of local regulars at lunch, breakfast served until 8 pm, and a mixed New Mexican/Anglo comfort food menu plus wine and beer means what's not to like?
google avatar

PJ S.

Yelp
Several online resources pointed to this place and noted their fantastic chili cheeseburger - so that's what brought me in. And to their credit they made me an awesome burger with a fresh bakery bun, large 10 oz patty and all the fixins. It tasted great but my one critique is the green chili's kinda got buried in all the other flavors going on there. I hardly tasted them. Still it was a great meal and sanely priced. Super nice staff and fun atmosphere. I'm not sure their burger rises to the destination status that many ascribe to it but it's pretty damn good and they have a full menu of other goodies too including homemade desserts. Glad I popped in

Mary R.

Yelp
Service and food were great. Had the bison burger special and fish and chips. Both were tasty. It seemed pricey but bison was top quality.

Dee B.

Yelp
One of the top three burgers in Santa Fe. Angela is awesome and has been holding it down. Spectacular pies, too!
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Have been a long time fan of their burgers, but last night decided to try something new and got a plate of chicken fajitas. They were absolutely awesome, every item on the plate was delicious. Their baked goods are epic, the thick and chewy chocolate chip cookie is a must try.
google avatar

Nibuz E.

Yelp
If your looking for a good burger the bite has one of the best green chile cheeseburgers in the state. The burger is moist, favorable, and was cooked to perfection. The only gripe I had was that the bottom bun was so soggy that it fell apart while I was eating it! A soggy bun, however, by no means deterred from the deliciousness of the burger (maybe just the experience).

Joan K.

Yelp
The best green chili cheese burger we have ever had! We ended our meal with a large slice of chocolate cream pie and coffees. The buns and desserts are all made in house. The coffee is also roasted on site. The restaurant is extremely clean , well staffed with a friendly crew and runs smoothly. A great experience every time.

Myra D.

Yelp
I love this place. Never really crowded yet, great service, good food and great coffee they roast in house. The food is good...sometimes better , but the service is excellent. I love their wedge salad. Tender leaves of iceberg lettuce with delicious Housemade blue cheese dressing and smothered in crispy real bacon bits. And they serve Mexican coke. I recommend the Buffalo Burger. Really good. The room is large and the tables are well spaced.

Yelp
Came here on the recommendation of our concierge, for "Green Chile Burgers"...this a a local diner type restaurant specializing in a mix of diner, Mexican/Santa Fe options. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner; we came for lunch. Menu options from starters of chips/salsa/guac, soups and salads, chili fries. Entree choices vary from tacos, chalupas, enchiladas, flautas, steaks, and other specials. Saturday had specials of pork chops, trout and fried chicken. The guys got the green chili cheeseburgers- which they enjoyed, came with fresh fried potato chips. Friend ordered the trout which she enjoyed, we got the fried chicken which we do not recommend. The chicken was really dry, especially the dark meat and breast, needed seasoning! Vegetable s were ok but the biscuit was delicious. Their bakery case was full of homemade cakes and pies: chocolate cake, banana cream pie, coconut cream pie and bourbon pecan pie were all excellent!

Yelp
I travel to Santa Fe frequently and come here each time. The people are wonderful, their food is great but their desserts are over the top!!
google avatar

Victoria M.

Yelp
I particularly like small local dives that you just come across when looking for something to eat. Santa Fe Bite was just what I wanted at the moment. My family and I got the green chile bacon burger and guacamole with chips on the side it was simple and delicious. Everything was good, the service all the way to the food. Go check them out!
google avatar

Beth A.

Yelp
My second time to get their homemade veggie burger and it's delicious! They also have a lot of really good daily specials. Their red chili pork posole is amazing! I could eat here everyday! Everything on the menu is yummy!!

Jenna E.

Yelp
Unfortunately it's an overpriced plain burger spot. You want a good burger with chile you can taste? Blakes! (First time experience will not be back)
google avatar

Marc D.

Yelp
Santa Fe Bite now serves breakfast, and it's really good. We've enjoyed eating there three times since they started opening in the morning. Quesadillas, burritos, and huevos rancheros have been delicious. The service is excellent and very friendly. We've been there on Saturday mornings and the place has been clean and quiet. We'll be going again. And again.
