On the Grid : Santa Monica Stairs

"There are few places better than the Santa Monica steps to see the stereotypically health-obsessed people that populate Los Angeles in the popular imagination (and—partially—IRL too), chiefly because it is in a beautiful outdoors area on the boundary between Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades and because it is free, unlike Crunch or David Barton. It is often uncomfortably busy, packed with attractive men and women in tight athletic wear doing push-ups on the curb, and if you do a couple loops up and down the two staircases, you will have earned a scoop of ice cream from the nearby Sweet Rose Creamery." - No Style Studio

If I’ve got 30 minutes and have to pick between a Stairmaster at the gym or hitting the Santa Monica Stairs, it’s a no-brainer. The Stairs win by miles. There’s just something uniquely fresh about the air in this part of Santa Monica. The ocean breeze wraps around you, cool and invigorating, making the workout feel so much lighter and more enjoyable. It’s peaceful here, with only the soothing sounds of crashing waves and your own breathing keeping you company. The views are amazing too. You get a gorgeous glimpse of the Pacific Ocean on your way down, and the lush greenery of Pacific Palisades right across. Sure, I hit the gym sometimes if I’m tight on time, but nothing beats the idyllic charm and effectiveness of training outdoors here. A little heads-up for first-timers: if you’re hydrating properly, you’ll probably need a restroom sooner or later. The closest public restroom is about a 10-minute walk away at Palisades Park. It’s super easy to find once you reach the park (free and conveniently located). Pro tip: If you jog, you can cut that restroom trip down to just 3 or 4 minutes. Plus, Palisades Park itself is a fantastic spot to chill afterward, soaking in the views as a nice reward post-workout. Just remember to respect the local residents around the stairs… they’re already dealing with plenty of visitors, so let’s keep it quiet and peaceful for everyone. I’m grateful they allow us to enjoy such an incredible spot. Huge recommendation whether you’re a local or just visiting Santa Monica. Definitely check it out!

The Santa Monica Stairs are a fantastic workout spot and a local gem for fitness enthusiasts. Nestled in a beautiful neighborhood, the wooden and concrete staircases offer a challenging cardio session with scenic views of the surrounding area. The vibe is lively, with a mix of serious athletes and casual exercisers, which creates a motivating energy. Parking can be tricky, especially during peak hours, but the effort is well worth it. Whether you’re looking to burn calories or enjoy the outdoors, the Santa Monica Stairs are a must-visit for fitness fans in LA.

Google
It’s a 15 minute walk from the beach. Parking can be tricky, but there’s free parking around the corner. Just read the signs. Coming from Miami, which is sea level, it’s a nice little workout for the legs. It wasn’t too crowded because it was a weekday about 4 to 5 people but once you get to the top and you go to the right, you will have a beautiful view that’s worth it.

Google
The Santa Monica Stairs are no joke, but they offer an amazing workout with a stunning view. The climb can be intense, but once you reach the top, the view of the Pacific Ocean makes it all worth it. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists, but it’s big enough that you can find a moment of peace while you’re working up a sweat. Great spot if you want a challenging hike with a rewarding view

Google
Not so long stairs. Come early at morning or there would be many workout people there. 🅿️ Is available at street of adelaide dr along the fancy houses. Go forward some more to enjoy the sea view.

Google
A very popular place to exercise in Santa Monica. The concrete stairs are steep and can be a little narrow but great workout. Every time you get to the top you enjoy marvelous views of the pacific before you go another round. Expect crowds every day of the week.

Google
Parking: The only parking near by is on the top on the hill, if there's an open spot. There no visitor parking by the main stairs, only local with a permit. If you go the more scenic stairs near the middle of the road you need to walk about a half a mile from your Parking spot--don't complain, you came to walk. The nicer stairs have lots of plants but the stairs are wooden. There is another stairway on the same street at the end (near public parking), less scenic but the stairs are more study and made from concrete. However, if you have big feet--maybe about size 11+ you will find the steps to be smaller than your foot. The locals frequently use the stairs for exercise, the people in the area probably hate people with noisy shoes or who make heavy steps

Google
Close to the beach perfect way to break a quick sweat or climb at a leisurely pace .. the reward for the workout is an amazing view.

Yelp
Treating these stairs like a destination has destroyed this once amazing and peaceful residential neighborhood. The street around the stairs has been taken over with literally hundreds of people at any given hour of the day. Most of them appear to think the neighbors low front walls and short stairs into their front yards are their personal hangout. How obnoxious and rude. I say give the neighbors their peace and quiet back. And find an outdoor workout spot that isn't in the midst of a residential neighborhood.

Yelp
The Santa Monica Stairs is a great spot for a cardio and glute workout. As someone who loves outdoor exercise, I find the mix of concrete and wooden steps challenging and fun. Weekday afternoons are ideal since it's not too crowded and I can focus on repeating the flight of stairs to really feel the burn. The folks here are friendly and the view of the ocean from the top is absolutely worth the climb.

Yelp
Great place for amazing work out Recommender by all dr Stair work out Out in the air Nice view

Yelp
Beautiful views / excellent work out / a must . Enjoying the view and the people watching makes it that much better

Yelp
These stairs are a good workout, 187 concrete stairs then 171 wooden stairs. It's best to do it on repeat for a few times for a workout. It can get pretty busy on the weekends with many people coming out, but the weekdays are not nearly as bad. If I lived in the neighborhood I'd come here all the time but since I don't I usually incorporate the stairs into a longer walk. There are actually many staircases in this area which is perfect for an urban stair hike. This hike is featured in the book Secret Staircase by Charles Fleming, #40 Santa Monica-Rustic Canyon loop. In addition to the Santa Monica Stairs it outlines an amazing walk encompassing 7 other staircases close by. This neighborhood is really pretty especially during springtime when it bursts with flowers like roses, geraniums, bougainvillea, daisies, and jasmine.

Yelp
In A Nutshell: -The Santa Monica Stairs is open to all, not just locals. -I suggest going there during the mid-week, mid-morning for the least amount of people. -Even then though, you may run into some sourpuss, unhappy humans. -You would think endorphins would make them happier, maybe they just aren't pushing hard enough or just have unhappy lives. -Either way, your best defense is to work up a sweat & smile every time you pass by. -The stairs are pretty easy, you'll probably need to go up/down around 20x for a good workout. Overall, be kind & stay motivated!

Yelp
I have been here afew times and I forget how great of a workout these stairs can be. Covid it was shut. It's open now. There are two sets of stairs one is the wooden stair case and further up is the concrete stair case which is more narrow and steeper. Going down on the wooden stair case be little careful as it is older and could use some repairs. Just don't want anyone to slip and fall. The views are amazing you can do quick run to the beach after. It wasn't so crowded as I expected it to be. Parking was easy lots around I saw people bring there dumbbells and were doing weight sets in between not a bad idea. You definitely get a serious leg workout I was pretty soar for afew days. I also did 10 rounds of it. Doing two stairs at a time that made it more of an intense workout. I'll be back here again .

Yelp
Great free workout in Santa Monica. There are a set of wooden stairs as well as cement stairs west of the wooden stairs. Neighborhood parking. There's always people, although they're especially popular on weekend mornings. There aren't any public restrooms in the immediate vicinity but there are signs that point out the nearest parks. The stairs are located in an actual neighborhood, so there are cars that come down the street. Going up/down the stairs 4-5 times makes for an excellent workout (for both cardio and lower body strength training). Just remember to breathe!
google avatar

Yelp
The Santa Monica Stairs refer primarily to a pair of outdoor stairways in descending to the northwest from Adelaide Dr to Entrada Dr, both entrances are currently closed, though you still could walk along Adelaide Dr and get to the higher end of the stairs, and enjoy the scenic view of ocean and mountain.

Yelp
Up and down, up and down. It's hard but so worth it! If you live in the area it's a great place to train and meet lots of like-minded people. It's free and open for everyone. No matter what is your fitness level, you will get a great workout. You also have the choice of wooden stairs or the more difficult concrete stairs. The neighborhood is fantastic, the view from the top is so beautiful, and the air is so fresh and pure! I'm afraid of heights and was a bit scared at first, so I took my time going up & down, holding onto the rail. I like how people behind you don't rush you, they just go around you.

Yelp
Been in Santa Monica for 18 years now, love the stairs and that whole stretch for a work out. The view and air is amazing during all times of the day, but here are a few recommendations, 1. Best time to come in around 5am-10am and here is why: less people rushing you behind and in front of you going up and down. You want to get there once the sun is up, going down those stairs with no light is no joke lol. 2. Go up and down the wood stairs to avoid joint pain. 3. There is no water fountains, so make sure to bring water. 4. There is a ton of parking especially on San Vicente Blvd which is a short walk. 5. Walk to ocean afterwards and get the beat ocean breeze. Ps ton of trainers over there if you looking for one. Good luck guys

Yelp
They are stairs. They are in Santa Monica. I can't believe that I am reviewing stairs but I do believe that these stairs are worth reviewing. They're are not really a tourist attraction. They are a hotspot for fitness enthusiasts. I'm not really a fitness enthusiast. I do like to keep fit though and I hate boring/routine exercise. Personally, if I make it up without stopping or pausing, I am doing good. Sure, people in spandex or yoga pants will be running by me but realistically I don't see me ever running up these stairs. I used to like to park at Santa Monica Place or the Third Street Promenade and then walk to the coast and take the long walk north in Palisades Park. It's a nice park with a wide trail + scattered picnic tables & restrooms. When you make it to the north end of Palisades Park, check out the cool Totem Pole. Then cross Ocean Avenue and take Adelaide Dr., if you want to go to the top of the stairs. If you want to go to the bottom of the stairs, you can just follow Ocean Ave. down the hill and the stairs will be just to your right. btw - There are two sets of stairs here, near each other, one set is concrete and the others are wood.

Yelp
After a whole year of shut down thank goodness they reopened! This can now replace the shutdown tradition of DONUT- SATURDAYS :p Dodging the more fatigued people or allowing them to pass your wrecked state as life slowly leaves your body through your nostrils is good here due to the respectful & understanding crowd :D woohoo time to get in shape for summer 2021. On April 17, 2021 I Did 10.5 rounds in 33min & got 468 calories.

Yelp
Had a great experience working out here Found easy parking spot down the street It was crowded but fun to see like minded fit people working hard. Very motivating The stairs gave me a killer workout and definitely recommend this spot for a fitness adventure

Yelp
Eh. I don't get the draw. Working out on concrete stairs isn't really my jam. Narrow long set of stairs and if you want to go down to the bottom without destroying your knees (not going down the actual steps) you have to walk all the way through the neighborhood to go down the main road/hill. If you live close or are in the neighborhood, go for it. But I prefer working out with more natural elements - like Griffith park or the Baldwin hills steps.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're really looking to challenge yourself physically, this is the place to do it. I definitely recommend stopping by during the week, where it's less crowded. Yes, it's a tough workout. But at least you get the fresh ocean breeze to keep you going. This place is tucked away in a neighborhood. It's like a hidden gem. There are tons of steps to keep you gasping for air, but as they say in the movie Dodgeball, "you've got to burn it to earn it". It's also in close proximity to San Vicente, where there's a grassy median to run some miles afterwards.

Yelp
I have had this place bookmarked for 3-4 years. I was so thrilled to have the opportunity to stop by and do a quick 25 minute cardio session w/ my little Gavin. I drove alongside the Santa Monica Beach and it somehow calmed me.. made me content w/ life in general. I guess vacations do that to people. Finding parking wasn't an issue for me. The people we encountered were all friendly. A few gave me compliments for having an active and happy kid. A few gave me compliments for getting him involved. He got tired for 1 full lap so instead of cutting our workout short, I carried him to complete our time. Everyone gave me kudos for being a super mom. I was quite proud. A very narrow set of stairs and looks un-intimidating but like w/ most things, looks can be deceiving. Going down was a breeze at first but my first lap up the flight of stairs raised my HR up immediately. I originally set my timer for 20 minutes but Gavin wanted to do an extra lap. I was beat but I couldn't turn him down knowing that everyone heard him want to do another set. Just do 20-30 minutes and do squats, push-ups, and maybe jump knee touch after each lap if you want to burn fat w/o having to go to the gym. I love my gyms but you do not need a gym in order to workout. I am jealous. The people that live nearby are lucky. Another trip planned already. Will visit soon!!!

Yelp
We drove by today, June 25. Both sets of staircases on Adelaide are still barricaded and closed. Why? Who barricaded? The City or some grouchy resident? The barricade looks sketch! How about open them M-F and close on weekends to avoid crowding?
google avatar

Yelp
There are actually 2 stairs that are very close to each other. One is the steel ones, and one is the wooden ones. The steel ones are a lot easier and not that steep. The wooden ones were the death of me. I was very optimistic before I came here. Judging from the pictures, the stairs didn't look too steep. I envisioned myself to be pretty fit and will be able to do a couple sets. But in reality, I did only 1 set and almost passed out. I started out going down the steel ones, then ran over to the wooden ones. On my way up the wooden ones, I was behind an old man, and at first, I thought he was going pretty slow. But as we got closer and closer to the top, it got super steep. Turns out, he was actually quicker than I was. I even needed breaks in between. After I got to the top, I started seeing stars. And as I was resting, I saw a woman with a baby come up and then back down.. 15mins later, I was still resting at the top, and saw the same woman with the baby... She did 2 sets already. I am 22 years old and is in the worst shape ever. Got beat by an old man and a woman with a baby on her back because her doing it solo will be too easy. I have yet to come back.. but when I do, I vow to do more than 1 set!!!

Yelp
Great workout!!!' You don't need a lot of time. If you have 30 minutes it's the best cardio ever. You think you can do an hour, no way. Beginners may do 2 rounds. Pros do 7+ rounds
google avatar

William G.

Yelp
To my fellow fitness enthusiasts, this is a good place to be! When I'm not lifting at the gym, I like to go hiking and rock climbing. I always like seeking out new challenges, and I first learned about this place from my buddy at the gym. So here I came to meet the challenge. Getting here was not hard. I parked on Ocean Ave in Santa Monica, and walked to the start of the stairs. We descended, then started the arduous climb back up. This was repeated two more times, before we walked back to the car. Our quadticeps and glutes were all but shot, and we were ready to grub afterward. There were other people taking the same challenge, but it wasn't too crowded. Even in crowded times, the route up and down the stairs is still manageable. I recommend this place if you love to push yourself to the limit. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Christy A.

Yelp
Ok, if you've read my other Cali reviews you can now see a pattern. I love to workout outdoors whenever I'm in the area and each time I visit I discover a new and awesome location to break a sweat. The Santa Monica stairs should not be compared to the Baldwin Hills stairs but they are just as treacherous for sure! These stairs are not as crowded. There are also 2 separate flights you can either do both (up & down) or stay on course with 1. Your bound to have an awesome burn whichever you choose. The view is amazing and the area is residential; so very quiet and peaceful.

Yelp
Santa Monica stairs at 4th and Adelaide Drive are the CONCRETE stairs, where as the WOODEN stairs are located at 7th and leads to Entrada Drive. I stuck to the concrete stairs off of 4th, which has a vertical change of about 111 feet and about 180-ish steps. I must change up my workouts to keep things fun, different and keep my body moving to burn calories. I work nearby, so when I get out of work early, I break out with my gym clothes in the trunk, jog to the stairs (1.7 miles from my workplace) then head to the beach for more jogging. Santa Monica stairs offers the beautiful seemingly far-off ocean view, in the neighborhood of incredibly expensive homes, and is a bit of a social scene -like being at a singles bar! -but better! At least, you know you'll definitely meet like-minded people who value keeping it sexy! Bring water (no drinking fountains nearby) and the mind-set to go out there and honor your physical body with exercise.
google avatar

Jana C.

Yelp
Gotta love them-- easy to access, at least 3-4 spans across the PCH between beach and bluff.. Great exercise along Palisades Park from the historic pier. Only dream about doing all 40+ walks with local secret staircases. Tres cool and wholly unique to the Oceanside areas.
google avatar

Sogol B.

Yelp
I guess it depends when you go. It could be super crowded in the afternoons and climbing the stairs would be a bit tough. Sometimes its super douchy as you get your typical boobs n hips in matchy matchy outfits trying to be seen. Workout wise its good. At least 40 stairs i think. U can double up and the concrete stairs instead but hard on tour knees. I like the wooden ones more.
google avatar

Angelina R.

Yelp
My friend and I try to do the Santa Monica stairs on a weekly basis. We hadn't gone in 2 weeks so we decided to go again. We just went yesterday and I am sore today. I only took 2 weeks off from the stairs and I'm sore! I like to do about 4 sets up and down on the wooden stairs. I'm aiming to do an extra set each time. At the top I usually do pushups, he'll do handstand pushups. At the bottom I'll do tricep dips and he'll do pullups. After our last round we usually go for a jog down the street and do jumping jacks, jump squats or some other variation and then jog back. It's very challenging for me and it's nice because in 40 minutes or less I've completed a great HIIT workout. Parking hasn't been difficult for me. I find a spot every time, even on the weekends when it's really busy. I like to park at the top on Adelaide street and finish my workout there. All fitness levels can come here and challenge themselves. Bring water as you will get sweaty and out of breath and wear layers. Can't wait to do it again for 5 rounds!

Yelp
In the Los Angeles area, there is Grumman's Chinese Theater, the Walk of Fame, the Round Capitol Records Building, the Farmer's Market, The Sunset Strip, Rodeo Drive, The Santa Monica Pier, and the Santa Monica Stairs, aka "The Stairs." The Stairs is an institution, a lifestyle, and a gym with a million $$ view. It's a place people come to work out, make new friends, or have an affair. Commoners rub elbows with movie stars, politicians, and everyone in between at The Stairs overlooking multimillion dollar homes and the Pacific Ocean. There is nothing like it anywhere else in the United States. It's a free to the public, multimillion dollar workout spot. The wealthy, famous, and the poor traverse the steps together equal in life if only for a few moments in time. In the future, The Stairs is destined to be designated an "Historical Place." The Stairs is an adult location, not really appropriate for small children, or pets. Some people bring their dogs here to workout--creating a hazardous situation. Others tie their dogs up at the top of the stairs impeding easy access to The Stairs. Best to leave the poop factory at home. Feel free to wear what you like at The Stairs. There are no rules and everything goes from thongs under workout shorts, and bikini tops, to an Indian sari and skirts. Perfume, cologne, jewelry, makeup, jeans or Lulumon all are fine at The Stairs. We are all working out in close confines, so why not dress your best and smell your best? But feel free to come au natural, just rolling out of bed--everyone is accepted and no one is Judged at the Stairs. Does not matter what you look like or who you are--What matters is that you just do The Stairs, and don't complain about it. Parking is easy near The Stairs until 6 PM, but you have to park a couple of blocks away from The Stairs after 6 PM per the signs. If you have a fancy car that you want to show off, come early and park it the top of The Stairs and put your water bottle on the roof so everyone knows it's yours when you take a sip.
google avatar

Danielle G.

Yelp
In need of an outdoor workout? Do this one. You'll love it. Or hate it. Or a little bit of both. Parking: There is street parking at the bottom of the stairs. Usually fairly easy to snag a spot. Some people leave their water bottles at the top or bottom of the stairs. It's not very practical to be carrying a lot of items up and down. The best part is getting to the top and enjoying the ocean view with the ocean breeze. You'll see people of all different fitness levels here and we're all out of breath by the time we get to the top. Walk, take two steps at a time, sprint--your legs will feel it the next day! Stairs can get crowded at peak times which does make it harder to go at your desired pace, but I still like coming here to change up the gym routine and get outdoors every once in awhile.

Yelp
Leg and butt day. 2 set of stairs being about 10 flights of stairs. Accessible parking in the residential area and of you want you can go down to the beach.

Yelp
Drove all the way from SGV to Santa Monica just for this stairs. We were told that a lot of famous Victoria secret models go there to shape their bodies. Since we have been eating good food for a long time, it's really time for us to lose some fatty belly. It's so pretty when you climb all the stairs to the top. We went on a cool Saturday evening, it's not that crowded, and the breeze made us so cool. It's a challenge activities. We both had shaking legs when we have to walk down stairs. It's a good work out stairs and you definitely feel the soreness after that. Stretching more before you star, have fun and keep healthy.

Yelp
A great workout for beginners and gym rats! Plus, plus with the amazing coastal view, sea breeze air, 4 blocks to the beach!! Reward yourself by getting a gourmet burger at Father's Office 8 blocks down!

Yelp
Mega cardio and butt blast all in one. I LOVE the Santa Monica stairs. It's free ninety nine and a great work out with a view and ocean breeze. Some days I come with a friend, and our catching up time distracts from the pain. Some days I come alone with headphones in, ready to work. Some days I go up and down the wooden stairs. Some days I run a loop up the wooden stairs and down the concrete stairs. Some days I bring my own free weights for the top of the wooden stairs as a mini strength building break. Some days I use my own body weight + the metal railing near the top of the stairs for strength training. And, other days, I run down to the ocean after a nice set. Tips: -I like early or late (but beware, it's a bit difficult to see at night which can be a trip hazard). I don't like to be crowded. -Parking - street. Read signs carefully as some streets do not allow parking early/late in the day.

Yelp
It's been over 10 years since my last visit to the SM stairs. I've been keeping in shape with yoga, hiking, gym...but these stairs are a whole other beast! I knew better than to go crazy- I did only 3 sets (2 cement / 1 wooden). Energy was great, lots of Los Angelenos enjoying their outdoor workouts. That was Saturday, Sunday hike was a bit challenging, I could feel the fatigue. It's Monday and my 46 year old quads are screaming after every step. The SM Stairs and I will be BFs again one day soon....just not today.

Yelp
Great for a workout near the beach! But gets crowded on weekends. Little tough to find parking but still a great flight of stairs to train for my iron women tournaments

Yelp
I love these steps! it's such a fun workout and with beautiful views!! I have been coming here a couple times a year and love it every time!

Yelp
Excellent workout. I usually ride my bike from Venice, do 8 - 10 reps, and and can hardly function for the rest of the day. Beautiful setting and highly addictive.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
It can get quite crowded on weekends from 9am-noon. Prepare yourself for a visual cornucopia of Los Angeles characters... from LA firemen, acrobatic hippies attempting to scale the stairs in a handstand position, new moms and dads with their bundles of joy strapped to their torso, men with their shirts off, men who should have kept their shirts on, and women with fully glossed trout pout, cleavage on display, and the tiniest shorts imaginable. This is where the good, the bad, and the ugly gather to run/hop/drag themselves up and down 170-something steps like that crazy Penguin Race game from back in the day. Pace yourself, bring plenty of water, and eat a little something at least 45 minutes beforehand. I once took a guy to the stairs and he talked smack the entire time about it being a pathetic work out option. Then he proceeded to puke on a cactus after 4 sets. Well, that's one way to resolve a dispute. :)

Yelp
Let's get physical, physical I wanna get physical Let's get into physical Let me hear your body talk, your body talk Let me hear your body talk If you want to get physical and want to have a change of scene than the usual Runyon Canyon Hike or Baldwin Hills Scenic hike, another favorite destination to get your booty in shape is the Santa Monica Stairs. It is basically a long outdoor staircases near Pacific Palisades, descending Santa Monica Canyon. The houses surrounding the stairs on top of the canyon are all multi-million dollar homes so if you like people or house watching, the Santa Monica stairs location would be a fun and interesting place to exercise. Keep in mind, the stairs get super crowded so while you are climbing the stairs, there is only one line to go up and the other line to go down. You can try to cut people if the person in front of you is moving too slow or you are sick of staring at their butt, you could cross to the middle of the stairs and get back in line to cut the slow pokes off. As you get higher and higher up the stairs, your thighs will burn but it is a pretty decent size path so by the time you get super tired, you are already at the top. Many people go there and do different sets up and down multiple times.. last time I went, we did about 3 sets but we were passing by people who did like 8-9 sets so you could really get a good buttocks and leg works out in especially if you run up the stairs. Overall, it's a nice view up at the top and you could also go running around the nice neighborhood if you are sick of those wooden stairs. *Parking- Residential Parking

Yelp
I'll keep this short...just like my workout. I can hike Runyon Canyon without getting sore but one set of the Santa Monica Stairs and I couldn't walk for days! It was only 175 steps each way but on my way back up, my legs started shaking! So pathetic! There was a 2 set of stairs (one wood/one concrete) I wanted to try but I didn't think I'd be able to make it back on the 2nd set so I bowed out. Meanwhile there were people sprinting up and down the steps several times like it's nothing! It can be scary for those that are afraid of heights (like me) but if you go slowly and hold onto the railing, you'll be fine. The stairs are in the middle of a beautiful neighborhood, I would have never known about this place if it wasn't so famous! Parking was easy, it's only a few miles to the Santa Monica Pier / 3rd Street Promenade so you can make a day of it.

Yelp
The BEST FREE workout you could possibly treat yourself in West LA. I love coming here because I always know I'm going to get a good sweat. The place is located at the end of 4th street, which is Adelaide Dr. You can park in that little Cul de sac from 8am-6pm (keep an eye out for street cleaning days). Any time earlier or later, you can easily find parking on San Vincente. I've never had too long of a walk. Just be sure to read parking signs to avoid getting a ticket. -There's two sets of stairs, concrete and wooden. You'll see the concrete stairs at the end of the cul de sac, but you have to walk up (to your right) a little bit and then you'll see the wooden stairs. -This place is located right in the middle of a residential area, so be respectful with your voices and behavior (everyone usually is). -Just in case you forget, sometimes water is available via honor system for a dollar at the top. But do bring water! -This place is always packed with people, even at night! I've come during the night time...I wish it was lit, but you can still see enough to me haha. This place is not for the social crowd. Everyone here sticks to their own iPod usually and is on a mission to get a good workout. The unspoken etiquette here is awesomely followed (i.e.: letting people faster than you pass, etc.) -THE LOOP: Some people run up the wooden and down the concrete or vice versa. Vice versa is the more difficult route. But if you're feeling adventurous throw in this jog in between the stairs! -CONCRETE STAIRS: Narrower steps and it winds and turns a bit here and there. I personally don't use these stairs because the narrow steps really bother me. I either jab my feet into the next step or almost miss a step. You actually get to see the ocean from the top! -WOODEN STAIRS: I personally use these only when I come here. These stairs are steeper, wider and it goes straight up and down. There is a driveway halfway through the stairs which creates a little platform for anyone who wants to take a break halfway. Wider steps. Overall, this is a really motivating place. I promise you, your legs will BURN! It's inspiring seeing people from all ages do these stairs!!

Yelp
Drop down and stretch those leg muscles before you embark on running up and down the Santa Monica Stairs! The Santa Monica Stairs will give your body a workout that will leave you speechless, literally. My friend and I decided to take on the challenge of running up and down these stairs, along with many others, and let's just say many of us found ourselves "walking" the stairs toward the end. If your body is in need of a good cardio workout, the Santa Monica Stairs is a good choice. There are two sets of stairs to utilize, concrete and wooden, but most people choose the wooden stairs. There are many benefits to using these stairs. Many people exercise, socialize, and enjoy some of the nice views from the top of the stairs. There are people from all walks of life running and walking up and down these stairs. We witnessed a senior citizen, well into the 80s age range, stretching and walking up and down these stairs. I couldn't help but to let that particular gentleman know how much of an inspiration he is to others, as he made it look so easy to climb the stairs. All in all, try not to fall on the Santa Monica Stairs, as this good cardio workout can be challenging in more ways than one. Be sure to bring water with you and plenty of energy! Also, the earlier you arrive in the morning will be better, as the temperature won't be as hot and it won't be as crowded with people. Have a good workout!

Yelp
I used to do these everyday for weeks when I tore my rotator cuff and all I could use was my legs! Lol ok some things to keep in mind. Yes this is a free workout and free is great! Also it's a great workout for your legs and butt and if you haven't done them in awhile, then after them you should be sore the next day...or two. Pretty obvious stuff. Weekdays is way less busy and during the day. I hated the stairs on weekends. It was so busy. Even weekdays at night wasn't anything like weekends. Also I love a good workout but I get bored easy. I hike, spin, do CrossFit...so after a few rounds I was pretty bored. I usually did 10-15 rounds (full trip up and down) so I was there for a good 45 minutes. I just enjoy more stimulating workouts. I liked doing the wooden stairs better than the other set of stairs because they were easier on my knees. But if you like to run you can do a running circuit and do both. They are both easy to find. Overall if your on a budget or love being outside and don't mind doing repetitive stuff then you will love these!

Yelp
*** The Stairs are alright but there are a few notable drawbacks. *** Who doesn't wanna wake up their quads & calves from time to time? I love to cross-train when possible ... too much of one thing ain't good. So if I'm not running like Forrest Gump, I'll do the Stairs or Sand Dune. I like the Stairs but they hurt in the wrong places ... knee and head. Cement and wood is not forgiving. The pounding can wear on knees. I also get a headache on weekends when I cannot find a parking spot, or when it's so crowded that people bump into me while going up/down. I hate that. It disrupts my rhythm. Or how about when you got your flow going, and then you run into a slow group of people ahead of you? (ugh) So now I only do these Stairs mid-week during the mid-day, or not at all. *** Sand Dune Park is now my "goto" place. Sand is lower impact. ***

Yelp
I love the Santa Monica stairs. As someone who hates working out my whole life, I now have to work out in order to lose weight. My baby girl is 19 months yet I'm still struggling to lose that last 10 lbs of stubborn post-partum weight. It's pretty intimidating watching those fit men and women walking up those stairs as if it's no big deal...some even jog up or take double steps. Me...on the other hand...is huffing and puffing like someone with asthma. But I have to say, with persistency, I've gotten a lot stronger. I can do 6 rounds and barely feel sore the next day. It truly is a good workout. Even if you feel like the fattest person there, no one really cares or pays attention so it's no big deal.

Yelp
These stairs are no joke!! My sis and I came to check it out on Easter Sunday and there was a good amount of people getting their workout on. First we went down the concrete steps and turned left instead of right to the wooden steps. Whoops guess I should have read the reviews a little more carefully. The wooden steps look a little more intimidating because it's just a straight shot up. I was going at a pretty decent speed and still had to take a little break. Don't forget to leave a good amount of space between you and the person in front of you. If you're going to tailgate me I might have to release some gas on you! Great place to work on those quads and also check out lots of eye candy =)

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about the Santa Monica Stairs. My BFF and her bf had told me early on that they intended to go to the 'stairs' to exercise while I was visiting. I told them I wasn't opposed to the idea since I'll get to yelp about it. However, my deal was this -- no forcing me to do more than what my body can handle and no laughing!!! I mean c'mon, I'm not athletic at all, but I am not opposed to exercise. I just won't push myself to the point where I'll throw up and pass out! So we get there and it's the weekend and naturally there are a lot of people there. These were hardcore people! Some were like froggy jumping up the stairs 3 steps at a time, some were going down backwards 2 steps at a time, some were just traipsing up and down like it was nothing. So here I am, going down like an old lady -- I have a bad knee and going down hurts a lot more than going up -- but the first time down was okay. I took a short break -- about a minute -- and then went up. I did the first section and the middle section and then had to catchy breath. SHIT! Three times a week at the gym never prepared me for this! I rested a few minutes, stretched out my bad knee and then proceeded up the last segment..... and here was where the bad news began...... This stretch is the longest and I made the mistake of going up and then looking up -- DON'T DO THAT! You will see a never ending flight of steps and all of a sudden, my body told me 'you can't do it lame-ass, there are too many steps ahead'. I continued up and felt myself getting losing my breath and of course stupid me, I looked up again!!! By the time I got to the top I had to drink my water and rested about 3 mins and then I tried to go down. OMG, my knees were like jello. WTF! I i do a lot of cardio at the gym, mind you, not stairs because of my bad knee, but OMFG, I couldn't go down the freaking stairs! I made it 3 steps down and then I headed up again and continued stretching my knees until I was ready to head down. Second time down was more excruciating than the first. My knee was seriously hurting. I then made my way back up this time making sure to keep my eyes fixated on the step ahead and NOT look up! It really made a difference. So I made it up and down twice! That's it. My BFF and her bf did it 9x. Fuck me! Fuck them! Maybe next time I might attempt it 3x but only if someone drives me down so I can walk up!

Yelp
So fun...you've gotta' try it. I went mid-morning on a Monday and there were lots of people there. Not so crowded that you couldn't climb at your own speed though. I'd imagine it's pretty crowded it is on the weekends and evenings. There are "on your honor" water bottles available at the top of the wooden stairs for $1.00 if your forget yours. People leave their personal water bottles on the ledge at the top of the stairs and nobody bothers them. I like it, that people are so cool there. Parking is a little funky. I think it would be easier to park at the bottom of the stairs and walk up, lots more parking down below on Entrada. If you want to park below, the steps are at about 500 Entrada Dr. Los Angeles 90402. Next time I go, I'm going to try to park around there. The cross streets are Estrada and Amalfi. I didn't see what the parking restrictions were down there, so you better check before you park. You know how is is in LA with parking signs and pricey parking tickets. Don't wanna' have them mess up the good feeling you'll have when you went up and down all those stairs. It's so invigorating, and it's free!! You can go up and down the same stairs, or do a circuit. If you want to go up and down, I'd recommend the wooden steps. They are wider. About a couple hundred yards south of the wooden stairs, you'll find some concrete stairs. They're kinda' hard to find, but just keep looking until you see some concrete steps that go up and then go up! They are narrower and have some turns. I thought they were a little harder than the wood stairs, but they had better handrails, which come in mighty handy when going up and down all those steep stairs! The only bummer is there are no restrooms in sight. Please keep that in mind before you get there. you might want to have that cup of coffee after you do the steps rather than before! This is my 100th review. Glad to be able to write it about something so pleasant!!

Yelp
The stairs are the place to go if you don't feel like dealing with the germs in the gym and if you want a quick intense workout. I shoot for 10 times, down and then up is one, which usually takes about 34 minutes. If its your first time start with four or less if you wish to walk the next day. DON'T BRING YOUR DOG. It gets in the way, and guess what, no one thinks of your dog as a child, only you do, leave the flea bag at home, thanks. Plus if you are a pervert, like me, there is a lot of hot ass walking around. AND if you go at night, don't wear a head lamp or bring a flashlight, it blinds other people and you look like a retard!

Yelp
Take the challenge... Pump it out... Get in the zone... Look straight ahead... It's you versus the stairs... Synchronize your movements... Glide up and down... Work out your tooshy... Rock out 6 roundtrips (up & down)... Under 20 minutes... Your heart will pulse... You'll perspire with sweat... Feels great the second your done. Instantly you'll feel like a winner... ...and off along the top, I can hear my sister chanting, "Winner, winner, chicken dinner!" Can't beat that chant of glory!!! ;]
