The Best Restaurants in Eugene, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Smashed between the campus outpost of Hey Neighbor and ice cream favorite Prince Pückler’s, Santo De La Torta is a semi-newbie to Eugene specializing in Mexican sandwiches. Order at the counter. In the morning, folks can find items like breakfast burritos and egg tortas on Hideaway Bakery sourdough expanding into brunch items on the weekend like lemon-ricotta pancakes and chilaquilles. Meanwhile, the main menu includes a feast of seven different tortas (Think: a saucy, juicy stewed chicken in salsa verde stuffed in a split brioche roll with shredded lettuce and pico), in addition to burritos, tacos, and salads. There are fresh margaritas with Tajin rims and agua frescas, in addition to beer, which is $1 off during the 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday happy hour. The space features a small indoor and outdoor seating area, but customers can also order meals to-go." - Brenna Houck

Unimpressed at best, their sidewalk sign said they have Horchata (see picture), the person who took my order didn't seem to know what it was, and had to ask a chef, who then said no they didn't after thinking about it. Pretty lack luster service, except for taking your order and bringing it out, there's little, and terse interaction. The cherry on top is the food. As my friend put it quite accurately, "it's meant to look nice while being void of flavor" We'd just finished a pretty intense MTB ride and we're starving, if we hadn't just come from Prince Pucklers (who no longer has free water!?) and weren't starving, probably would've passed. We picked at our food despite being hungry.

What a great spot to stumble upon. Being vegan, most places have a very small menu available to us, and... this place is no different. But, what they do have is fantastic, and they put love in everything that they make. We tried several different dishes, and everyone was pleased 😋 The atmosphere inside is comfortable and great for close conversations with your small group. Make sure to stop in and give them a try if you like delicious sandwiches 🥪 😋

We really liked the food - not your traditional dishes but you can't go wrong w any of your selections We had chicken Verde torta, torta de queso birria to eat and a berry basil and regular margarita to drink - delish! Try their queso dip as well with the red salsa. Everything came out quickly and hot! Recommend!

I love getting the birria beef tostada with extra veggies and beans. On Thursday happy hours, chips and salsa came free! It's a wonderful environment with great service. The only area of improvement that would be great would be an actually spicy sauce option. It's all so delicious, but it would be better spicy.

Google
All I can say is that I ate and left NO crumbs. This was so good, I got the Birria torta, the meat was a little dry but the garlic sauce, my god the garlic sauce they put on this torta will quite literally knock your socks off. My hands were dripping with the crime I just committed on that torta. Could’ve used a few more spices for the actual meat to push that Birria flavor forward more but overall an amazing torta and would highly recommend. The margs were also amazing and the service was too, very kind and patient staff. Credentials: Honorary white boy at Mexican gatherings

San Francisco burrito may be the best this guy ever had. Toasted tortilla, perfect carnitas. My wife’s chicken taco was also excellent. Happy service, quiet guitar music. Just perfect.

Google
Counter serve spot for quick and tasty Mexican favorites. I had the Cubano and it was filling. The chips were fresh and the house salsa had a good heat to it. Cute spot for a date as it was intimate in low light. Service was friendly and fast.

Google
I've been here 2x for lunch takeout. The first time I ordered the Cubano and it was delicious with the grilled pineapple! Today I ordered the Torta Ahogada. The carnitas were tender and aplenty, the guajillo-beer sauce was so tasty, and the loved the picked onions and shredded cabbage on the side. I will order this again (but you may want to ask for a fork & knife). Eugene needs a unique place like this and I will be back at lest 1x a week to try a new item on the menu each time. I love chef Sarah Willis' former restaurants, so I'm stoked for this new Mexican joint and her taco truck, coming soon (Little Agave)! Also, I think the word is out because they had a steady stream of customers, yet the food came up in less than 5 minutes!

Yelp
We stopped by on a Saturday around lunch time. Their website said they opened at 11, but they were clearly closed. They had a sticker over their sign that said they opened at 12 and since it was close, we waited. They ended up opening a bit after 12, so something to be aware of, particularly if you are on a time crunch. It seems to be a one man show, but he was happy to give us some recommendations and everything came out quickly. There's plenty of seating inside and out with a real eclectic vibe inside. We all went with tortas and were very happy we did! My daughter and I loved the Chicken Verde Torta, it was truly everything I wanted it to be. Everything on it just made sense from the corn, to the aioli, to the pico de gallo. The bread was also soft and delicious, the perfect vessel. I'm not a huge torta fan, but this changed my mind. It was so flavorful and fresh! My husband went with the Torta Ahogada, which came highly recommended. It had a lot of great flavors between the succulent pork, the smoky sauce, and the vibrant pickled onions. One thing to note, it's smothered in a smoky red sauce, so not one you can pick up and eat. This place is definitely worth a try if you are in the area!

Yelp
Diminutive hidden gem tucked in between Prince Pucklers and Sweet Life on 19th... and positioned perfectly across from Beppes. The blended margaritas are on point (it's the only place I'll order a blended margarita) and generously apportioned w NO bottom-of-the-basement tequila and orange liqueur. My fav flavors are Tamarindo and Passion Fruit. TAJIN rims are offered and I highly recommend Tajin over a salted rim. OMG! FIRE! The food is plentiful, tasty and the sweet corn is BOMB! We go there regularly~~ last visit, I made a new friend when we sat inside. Lots of laughs, fun evening! Tip: watch for those slick rounded-corner tables if you dine inside~ I had a margarita slide off the table right into my lap. Haha! A warning: occasionally I've been known to ask for more sauce/ sour cream/ whatnot~ NOT HERE!!! The crème is plied generously on most offerings, so if you don't want your meal smothered, just ask for it on the side.

Yelp
We really liked what we ordered. It's small inside and it's perfect. If you see a line, order take out. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I feel like the food is made by people who really like what they cook. I'll be back for sure. This might just be out new spot. See you there!

Yelp
Small and narrow place with a couple tables inside and some outside. Ordering at the counter and food will be brought to you. The music was very loud inside the restaurant, and difficult to hear my friend across the table. The outside tables were taken too but it was not particularly busy. My Torta that I ordered (Ahogada) had deliciously tender pork but IMO had WAY too much sauce over it. It was literally drowning in it, as said on the menu, but that was all I tasted, the sauce. Even after taking it a bit apart, leaving half the bun/Torta off and putting the pickled veggies and the cilantro on the top, the sauce was overwhelming. The chips were good but the guacamole was tasteless and in desperate need of some lime juice and/or salt. Service is friendly.

Yelp
I am very excited about this new business and think they are a great addition to the 19th Ave area. I ordered two sandwiches to go, a cubano for the hubs and the santiago farm for me. My husband could not stop talking about his sandwich for days after. My sandwich was also very good. Probably one of the best vegetarian sandwiches I have ever had. I loved the variety of vegetables that were in the sandwich and the seasoning was an absolute chef's kiss. They are a small popular new business that offers delicious food, so they are going to be busy. Especially during lunch hours. I think they may have been understaffed on the day I visited. One employee was at the cash register, running food, and doing the dishes so that the food prepper could focus solely on the food prep. This did cause for a substantial wait. So give them a visit, be patient and kind, and enjoy a delicious sandwich.

Yelp
If you're going to put CASHEWS on something you should list it. Tree nuts are a very common allergy and it literally sent me to the hospital. The queso birria has a habanero cashew salsa on it and also one other thing that is not listed on their menu The picture is the menu I ordered it off of When I went back in to ask, the lady didn't even apologize just said "well if you have an allergy you should know better and always ask" with an attitude They did add a small note saying "May contain treenuts" but still didn't list all their ingredients

Yelp
Amazing food, good service and nice ambience. I would come back to eat another torta for sure.

Yelp
What a fun new place! I walked in at 6:30 tonight for a to-go order. There was a line. And a few tables with no food, but numbers. The "table numbers" were actually vegetable seed packets which was cute. This place is small. The line in back is small. They have a small connection oven, warmers, and a small line. There were four people working the line and the person taking orders and making drinks. They were running, but composed and didn't look confused or overwhelmed. By the time I ordered, about 5 minutes in line, I walked next door and got cake from sweet life, I only waited five minutes more. And everyone in the room and outside had food. I anticipated a lot more time waiting. But was pleasantly surprised. The menu is very ambitious for such a small line. But do not listen to that one star review. The food was solid. Glad I asked for the red sauce on the pork Ahogada torta on the side, because I liked dipping instead of it smothered. The corn exquisite was super yummy! The black beans are super flavorful! I love the melted cheese on it! And the potato salad was simpl, but exactly what I like from a potato salad. We also got the Cubano. It was stoneground mustard heavy, but the pineapple balanced it out. The bread was great, the guac was fresh, and chips were tasty too! Cute little place with outdoor seating as well. The ambiance is casual but has cocktails available. I recommend this place absolutely. I suggest using patience as they are new and have an ambitious menu for the space. But definitely 5 star flavor in my opinion!

Yelp
I love this spot. The food is so fresh and delicious. I got the cubano which was amazing. It had so many flavors. It had pineapple in it which I loved. It's served with fresh tortilla chips which hit the spot. Menu has a wide selection of sandwiches, enchiladas, burritos, appetizers, and more. The sauce selection is great. I loved the chipotle salsa. Overall vibe of the restaurant is super cute. All the food served on colorful patterned dishes. Quaint, local spot in a great location. Great for any occasion. The woman taking our order was very friendly and food came out fast. I believe they do takeout as well. If you haven't been here definitely come asap!!

Yelp
Update: it's been a minute since my last visit and felt the added star was necessary. Had queso dip, guacamole to start it was on point also came with a red salsa that was mild but tasty. The tortas were great! Fresh well toasted bread so they hold up the wet style sandwich. The service is very friendly even though it's counter ordering they brought out our food and explained the sauces etc. those little things don't go unnoticed and make me feel welcome. Go eat there!

Yelp
Seriously so good!! We've taken people here and everyone is always impressed!! I'm the pickiest eater and the sandwich looks scary but is sooooo good!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Really amazing tasting burritos that have a unique flavor of cheese and soft tortillas. I was looking for something on that side of town and stumbled upon this place. Very good!
google avatar

Cody H D.

Yelp
Holy messy mother of goddess, these are some tantalizingly tasty tortas!! Mine was a "wet" style: served in a little shallow lake of queso and sauce. And it was so freaking good! Just make sure you have napkins 'cause one of these tortas is as messy as three regular tortas combined. Not all of them are this wet though-I had the birria taco torta, with an actual taco on this stack of dangerously delicious decadence. But just like good sex, tasty food can be messy. So give in to your needs, your desires, your tastebuds... And have a F-ING AMAZING torta here! Service was great too with happy Euge hippy vibes. Very, very recommended.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
The service was just fine but the torta I ordered was really disappointing. It was soggy and had about 1/4 cup of meat. Maybe I have a different idea of what a torta is.
google avatar

Robert T.

Yelp
Very cool place. Awesome margaritas and food was very good! Great location and outdoor seating. Definitely be back
google avatar

Yelp
I like the Mexican mullet torta here. I prefer vegetarian food and it hits the spot. Good selection of beverages to go with the tortas sabrosas. Also there are some nifty local products displayed, Pacori coffee, Luxefly freeze dried foods. Oh yeah and don't panic, it's Organic!

Sydnee F.

Yelp
Delicious food!! Quick service. Great happy hour menu. Very cute interior. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
BEST MARGARITA EVER!!!!!!! I can't wait to go back to this fabulous place. Food was amazing as well. 10 out of 10!!!! Loved everything about this restaurant.

Yelp
I did not have the tortas, but I saw them being eaten on either side of me. The bread was crusty and crispy. My friend's order dish was Torta Ahogada ($14) which is cheap considered it's got Agate Alley, Beppe and Gianni's, and the 19th St. McMenamins all within walking distance. Between the prices and the quality of the food, I'm telling you, if you're on that corner, you know the one, looking for a good place to eat, give it a try! They source locally. The fish in my $12 ceviche came from Newman's Fish Market. First of all ridiculous cheap for fresh fish, and a good sized dollop of it too! It was swimming in a creamy lime/ginger sauce and there were 3 slices of sweet potatoes. I asked if that was potato and he said, "sweet potato, it's Peruvian style." there were two slices of sweet white potato and red sweet potato in between them. The service is super friendly and above and beyond. They can replace the bread with 2 (GF) corn tortillas. But we had come in past dinner rush and the fryer had already been turned off. That sweet person plugged it in just for my two tortillas. But I decided to order the Ceviche and I'm so glad I did.

Yelp
I love this place! The chicken verde, salsas, atmosphere, staff, location.... It's got it all. Everything is delicious and all made from scratch. The best pazole in town.

Anton M.

Yelp
Their qeso birria torta is little more than a small barely seasoned clump of dry meat slathered in an ocean of the blandest sauce I've ever seen all atop a half stale loaf of bread that can't even cover their small portion fully. This isn't worth 18 dollars, honestly I wouldn't eat it even if you paid me 18 dollars to do so.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
I love their vegetarian torta options. The potato salad is bomb and their drinks are delicious! Also the staff are very friendly.

Yelp
Found this place on Google Maps and wanted to try it out because I've never had a torta before. I watched a short YouTube video before going about the torta and it's origins (apparently they're popular in Mexico City and are served on a bun that's flat and wide). We ordered chips (which come with salsa) and guacamole, as well as their Cubano with house-made habanero sauce. The chips were nothing to write home about in the sense that they weren't spectacular but also, not poorly executed. The guacamole wasn't seasoned as much as I would've liked, BUT they did not skimp on the avocado (very creamy and rich). The Cubano was rich...made with pork carnitas and with a thin layer of melted provolone cheese, a slice of grilled pineapple, and slices of jalapeño. One Cubano alone was enough to feed my sister and I, and still left us feeling satiated. I'd have loved to have more grilled pineapple in the Cubano, I feel like its sweet acid would have helped to cut through the overall greasiness of the carnitas, and would have loved a bit of char on the carnitas. That being said I feel like it was still overall a pretty satisfying and filling meal. My sister even went to grab a Hibiscus Agua Fresca on our way out and that didn't disappoint! A little tart, sweet, and the perfect refreshing beverage to end our meal.

Sonia N.

Yelp
Great customer service. Great food! Great ambiance. Small and cozy. When I'm in Eugene, I will always come here. The salsa is fantastic.
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered a few items here - the Cubano, chips and guacamole, as well as their Jamaica Agua Fresca (essentially hibiscus). Cubano - I really enjoyed this torta. As their name suggests, the restaurant menu has numerous torta options, and the Cubano is one of them. It included some delicious pork carnitas, and some more non traditional torta items - pickles and pineapple. These latter two items actually provided a pleasant acidity and brightness to an otherwise quite dense and greasy torta. I would definitely advise eating this warm, the bottom was already getting quite soggy by the time we got to it, so I can't imagine having a wet, soggy bread would be at all pleasant. The other menu item I really enjoyed was the Hibiscus Agua Fresca. It was super refreshing and I thought it was a great complement to our dense meal. The guacamole wasn't as salty as I would have liked it to be, and with the chips and guacamole coming to a total of $8 ($5 for the chips only, $3 for the guacamole), it was a little hard for me to say that this item was worth it. Overall, service was great and the area was quite quaint but well cleaned. I might return next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
Don't pay attention to the negative reviews. Lived in the Eugene area for several years now and couldn't recommend this spot enough. One of the best spots in town. The food is flavorful and fresh and the portions of their tortas are very filling. Chips and salsa and guacamole were delicious too, some of the best guac I've had. The space is a bit small and there's not a lot of seating options but it's very clean and there's an outdoor space that's accommodating for warmer weather. People are very friendly and helpful. It's a in a cozy just off of campus and next to a park, the food is fantastic and is some of the best upscaled Mexican I've ever had. Price is a bit inflated but the quality is definitely worth it if you're willing to compensate the extra few dollars.
google avatar

Dev G.

Yelp
Ceviche, cubano, margaritas, tortas, i literally have not had one thing that I didn't love! It's a small counter service spot tucked between popular Eugene staples and is certainly worth the stop!
google avatar

Yelp
The civiche is incredible!!!! I've tried both the smothered Torta and the Cubano and both are wonderful. Super quality ingredients, very attentive and helpful service, will definitely be back.

Yelp
Don't let looks deceive you! This small place delivers amazing food! Everyone was very nice too!

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Just stopped in for lunch with our son who's living nearby going to U of O, and it was amazing! Had the taco bowl, tostada, and torta. All were great, the ingredients seemed very fresh and nice fast service. Nice to sit outside in the sunshine. We'll be back!
google avatar

Hana W.

Yelp
I am a big fan of tortas so I was excited to see this new place open up. I got their Torta Ahogada (shredded pork carnitas, pickled onions, ect...). I got it to go, with the sauce on the side. I noticed that typically the sauce would be poured on top, but I prefer less of it. The bread was great and the pork had a nice flavor and was tender. All the flavors came together nicely and I would get that torta again. I also tried their sweet corn side and it was excellent. The potato salad was also tasty. Overall, I really liked the food. I'm curious about the Lobster roll.

Yelp
10/10 service and food at Santo de la Torta. I was clumsy and dropped my guava margarita and was given another one free of charge and mess cleaned right away. The Quesabirria torta was so good I scarfed it down before it occurred to me to take a photo of it

Elyse O.

Yelp
Stopped here for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised! Service was very friendly and quick. We all had the breakfast burritos and they were delicious! The woman who took our order also gave us some free donuts from the day prior and they were delicious! We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
A truly disappointing experience to say the least. I had high hopes for this place but when I ordered the Mexico City Taco Bowl 3 of the listed ingredients were missing and when asked about them the staff looked confused as if they didn't know what I was talking about (except the corn they said they knew they were out of). I paid $16 for mixed greens, black beans, a couple pieces of tomato, shredded cheese and some shredded chicken. They did not add the olives, roasted peppers, or corn. It seems as though their menu in house is different than the menu online and they were going by their online menu, not the menu they provide customers. The birria torta had nice flavor but is very soggy from all of the sauce which might be why they put the crispy taco shell in there. The flavor of the sauce overpowered everything else. The chips were fine but the sauce that comes with it was bland, for $5 we would have expected an authentic salsa with it not a thin tomato sauce with a very subtle hint of chipotle (but it seems you have to pay $2 more for a good salsa). Sadly we won't be returning.

Alison M.

Yelp
Went for dinner on a Thursday night. No wait and truly delicious food. Everything was tasty, and standouts for me were the birria, Mexico City bowl, and the watermelon slushy margarita with Tajin.

Brian J.

Yelp
I find it dishonest when a place adds their own tip without asking or saying so. And with no payment screen there to interact with, it's the ripe scenario for getting away with it when you don't know what you're being charged. (I found out later.) This is an order at the counter place; no table service so not sure why they think they can or should do this. And around struggling college students right at UofO too? Seems poor taste. The food was honestly just ok. Mediocre at best. Might have given a two star if i was only rating the food.
google avatar

Yelp
Best margaritas in Eugene! And the ceviche is fantastic. A Eugene favorite! I love supporting them and you should too!

Josh B.

Yelp
Excellent, unique, flavorful food Great service Very friendly staff Highly recommended

Yelp
I just moved into the neighborhood down the street, and am very content here with this homey, aesthetic and delicious joint. The hardest issue I'll be having is whether I'd like to conquer the whole menu or resort to my favorites. Those being Torta de quesa birria and the chile relleno bombazo. Very friendly.
google avatar

Noelle J.

Yelp
We had two Mexican sandwitches, chicken and beef. They were surprisingly amazing. Sandwiches are the right amount of spicenss... which is to say it's on the spicy side. Ingredients are organic.

Thomas G.

Yelp
This place has a charming hole in the wall feel, while still offering a well-varied menu. It offers friendly counter service and the food is brought to your table, as it becomes ready. I tried the tortilla chips, equites, and torta ahogada. [I didn't think to get pics of the first two at the time!] The chips came with two dips (pick and a smooth chipotle sauce) and we opted for the third- a cheddar gouda dip. The dips were all excellent, especially the chipotle sauce: The equites were surprisingly underwhelming. Unfortunately, the corn didn't taste fresh (like it had possible been frozen and thawed) and was swimming in its sauce. Sadly, there wasn't too much going on in terms of flavor with it. For the price of the appetizer, I was hoping for something more flavorful, substantial, and fresh- especially when corn is in season (maybe even a whole cob?). The rest was great, so I'll give them a pass on this. The torta stole the show: it was a pillowy mountain of a bun filled with shredded pork carnitas which was balanced perfectly by the pickled onions. The whole thing was covered with a deeply flavorful guajillo-beer sauce and served with a fresh side of greens and veggies. The crust of the bun held on to the sauce like a glaze without soaking it in and making it soggy. Everything about this dish worked very well together and I came out of it covered in sauce, regretting absolutely nothing. All in all, I would skip the esquires next time and stick to the tortas and chips. I'm really looking forward to visiting again and seeing what the other tortas are like, although it will be hard to pass up having the ahogada again.

Yelp
Found this place by accident, & we were amazed at how good it was. The torta de queso birria was absolutely fantastic. The flavors melded together beautifully. Both of us are raving about it. Excellent service. HIGHLY recommend.

Yelp
We had a chance to stop by and enjoy this newish restaurant recently. Unfortunately this new addition to an already successful restaurateur is a huge miss! Small portions with high prices make it difficult to dine. More bread than substance on the BLT, Paninis and Tortas. The drinks were satisfactory but expensive. It's a self service restaurant with fine dining pricing!

Yelp
I had a great meal here. I got the Santiago Farm sandwich, which is packed full of roasted veggies. The food is heavy--I felt full for about 10 hours--but well-prepared, salty, fresh, pops your eyes open. I appreciate details like the high quality of greens, the kind you'd get at the farmer's market, which are dressed in a tangy dressing before they go on the sandwich. Little things that bump up the flavors. I tried some extra salsas just for fun. The green serrano salsa is very hot and tasted great on everything (comparable to schug). The bread itself was buttery and pillowy and seemed like it had come right out of the oven. Street corn was decadent. Overall, the food here is really special, as is the atmosphere. Not at all what one expects from the usual campus eatery. Agua fresca was delicious, too--a daily pineapple special. The only thing that might keep me from coming regularly is the heaviness of the food. It's rich as can be, especially that corn drenched in butter and cream. I think splitting 1 sandwich and 1 salad with another diner would be the right balance. Food came out fast and service was friendly. Casual counter-style ordering.

Todd A.

Yelp
Great idea executed not particularly well. The food all sounded amazing and unique for sandwiches, but was all bread. The meat to bread ratio was way off. More meat, less bread. And the cabbage, pickled onions and cilantro should not have been on the side. Should be IN the sandwich to help provide more variety and balance. Potato salad was pretty damn good though. Nice people. Great location.

S E.

Yelp
I have gotten takeout from this place twice. I ordered a torta the first time and a San Francisco burrito the second . I am from San Francisco so I had high hopes for the burrito because I wasn't impressed with the torta I had previously and was happy to have a different option. The burrito was even more unimpressive. It didn't have the rich flavors of a San Francisco burrito but it cost 5 dollars more than it would in San Francisco. I live near by so I really want to like this place but the cost of the food combined with the lack of flavor unfortunately makes this a non option for me when it comes to take out options. The tortas might be better as an eat in option but the burrito recipe needs a lot of work.

Yelp
What a delightful surprise! Exceeded expectations. Everything fresh and flavorful. You can taste the care put into making each dish. Shocked to have a place like this in Eugene. Make it your next try.

Yelp
Sara has outdone herself with Santo Torta. Creative and delicious. Her years in Mexico have helped perfect the flavors offered at Santo Torta. We will be back!!
