We came back during daytime hours and tried more food. The ambiance is noticeably different during the day than when we visited late at night. But both visits were very enjoyable.
Having tried their outstanding mole enchiladas last time, we tried beef fajitas and chile relleno this time. They absolutely nailed both! The fajitas were perfectly marinated, tender, juicy, meaty strips of flavor served on a hot iron plate, but not directly touching the plate. They topped a pile of grilled onions, which kept them from overcooking. And the frijoles charros (bean soup) served on the side was amazingly flavorful.
The chile relleno was unique and special. The poblano pepper was filled with a Mexican pot roast (slow-cooked beef with potato and carrot). I've had many chile relleno prepared many different ways. This isn't your overly-battered, cheese-stuffed monstrosity that many restaurants serve. This celebrated the poblano pepper and Mexican culture. I loved it. My better half doesn't usually like chile relleno at all but she loved it, too.
Their house Margarita on the rocks was definitely above average, too.
Service was great this time, though, again, the staff seemed more like friends and family members than career wait staff, and the hostess was friendly and attentive but spoke very little English. But no complaints. We were well-served, and the staff does enhance the vibe here. We even met the manager, who we were really impressed with.
We live in Bastrop County and we probably pass 20 other Mexican restaurants coming here, including Chapala and Costa Azul, both of which we love. But there's something about this place that will keep us coming back. And when friends visit from out of state and we pick them up from the airport, this is the first place we'll take them. And, honestly, the next time the two of us simply want a fajitas and a margarita, we'll ask ourselves if it's worth the extra drive time to head to Santa Patio. And the answer will be, "Yes!"
