The Odyssey: The best hotels in the Greek islands

"There isn’t a bad view of Santorini’s caldera anywhere on the island, but Oia, on the northern branch of the island, is something special. Its elevation provides a stunning perspective, and its orientation makes for dramatic shadows across the water at sunset. It’s also more or less the heart of Santorini’s luxury hospitality industry — but, from within the walls of Santo Maris Oia Luxury Suites & Spa, it’s possible to feel like you’re just about alone on the island." - Le Guide MICHELIN

We took the family of four here. Two adults, two teenagers. The rooms are amazing, each with a little personal Jacuzzi, and each section of rooms with a personal pool. That was so nice. The location was excellent, just a few steps from oia Town. Made it super convenient to get around. I seriously can’t think of one thing I would change about this place. It was awesome.

We stayed at the hotel for a week, I was a little worried that Oia would be too young for us! But it was lovely. A very pretty town.| We absolutely loved this place. The resort is very pretty and quite large.| Our suite was perfectly placed, we had a jacuzzi and pool right outside, nobody else was there except us so it felt very private. The resort did feel fairly quiet, but we were happy with that!| We liked the bedroom/ lounge and kitchen, plenty of space. |Oia is a short walk down a cobble path, we also found another path, I definitely had to wear trainers at night! |We walked into town every lunch and dinner time, we had a late lunch on our arrival day at the hotel which was perfectly acceptable albeit a bit expensive;|We used the gym at Santo mine as it was outside with stunning views, but mostly we just walked, we certainly got our steps in!|All the staff we met were very accommodating and chatty. We did experience a couple of issues, which were dealt with brilliantly. Our air-con made a horrendous noise at 11pm, on our second night, they sent an engineer who couldn't fix it but they bought us a fan, and they offered to move us, (we declined) but the following day it was sorted. We also had a water issue one day but apparently it affected the island not just us, that didn't really impact us too much!| Our housekeeper was Zennia, who always was friendly and kept the room beautiful. We liked the small touch of the beach bag which I will use again.|Breakfast was lovely, with a great view of the pool and beyond; We would definitely recommend this hotel, it was great.

This is a beautiful hotel, very clean with lovely sunset views. The rooms were comfortable modern and spacious. Without exception we found all the staff from check in to check out warm and helpful and smiley - this is at odds with the posts of two reviewers further down but I couldn't disagree more.||We only ate in the hotel twice one lunch and one evening meal and some drinks on the terrace whilst watching the sunset. The food was good but very expensive. There is a cobbled path (uphill) into Oia which we walked into everyday for lunch and dinner. It's a bit of a work out unless you are fairly fit ( I am not) and you need trainers.||We had a sunset villa suite with a jacuzzi plunge pool. Very private. The view of the car park which others have commented on was screened out by some shrubbery on our patio so not a problem.||Oil was lovely and not too busy - except when the Cruise Ships tipped out for shore excursions.||We found the hotel to be very quiet indeed - very relaxing but borderline boring - there is no entertainment at all. It was pretty windy when we were there and no-one really hung around in the evening so it was dead. On reflection a week was too long in this location and we wished we'd just done 3 nights then hopped over to another island. We did hire a car for one day and went down to the red sand beaches ( but too windy) and the Bronze Age ruins at Akrotiri which was interesting and then stopped off at Fira which was beautiful - again a lot of uphill walking and busy with cruise ships docking, but well worth a visit. We also walked part way down to Ammoudi bay from the hotel ( there is a free shuttle bus to the restaurants and back from outside the car park) for lunch one day which was very pleasant.||All in all if you want total peace and quiet away from the very many instagrammers and selfie seekers in Oia a good choice!

Santo Pure Suites and Villas..Wow!!! We stayed an amazing 5 nights in an Exclusive Sunset and Seaview Suite with Jacuzzi! We loved everything about our suite and this resort! We were celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversary and were left wine and fruit in the room upon arrival with a congratulatory note!!! There was also a keepsake beach bag! Our room was perfectly positioned with a very large private balcony for the best sea and sunset views!! The suite was huge (almost like a villa) and had a kitchen (no stove or microwave), a very large bedroom and living room area, a separate large dressing area, great shower area in the bathroom! The style was very cool, and had the curved vaulted ceiling like a traditional Santorini home. We loved spending time on our huge balcony each evening, enjoying the sunset with a cool drink in our hand! Spectacular! Each section of the resort also had a pool nearby with an infinity edge, which we enjoyed. Many times we had the entire pool to ourselves! ||I must point out how impressed we were with the house keeping staff! The suite was so clean daily! We enjoyed the nightly turn down service and they left a surprise for us every night! We especially enjoyed the chef inspired chocolates! ||The morning buffet breakfast was tasty and offered anything you may want…it was huge! It was super nice having breakfast on the veranda overlooking the main pool and sea beyond! There is a pool bar too that offers salad, sandwiches for a quick bite. There’s also a nice restaurant on site, Alios llios. We were so busy we did not have a chance to enjoy the spa, but definitely will next time!||We enjoyed staying here where it was away from the crowds and so peaceful and quiet! It was a short walk up a cobblestone path sidewalk to the main part of town for shopping or other dining options. It was so easy going on excursions as we were picked up and returned to the resort lobby! ||We were not ready to leave and wished we could have lingered longer! We highly recommend this resort and will return again next time we are in Santorini! Thank you for a wonderful stay!!!

Fantastic location overlooking the sea - we watched the amazing sunsets from our room every night. The staff were great, very welcoming and friendly, the accommodation was first class and we had an amazing view. Breakfast was included and was very good, offering both a buffet and a la carte options (both included in the price). First class gym and spa, plus easy walking distance to the town - highly recommended.

Beautiful resort with great staff. We had a room with a pool but it faced south & umbrella couldn’t cover the lounge or pool. We ended up using the large pool. The only disappointment was our room faced a parking lot as well as the sea but had a great view of the sunset which was great because the town was very crowded with sunset watchers. There is parking available here as well.

Stayed here for a week in July. ||Positives |1. Suite was amazing. Lots of space, spotless with a beautiful balcony overlooking the sea. It was very private, and had an amazing view.|2. Lovely pool areas. Main pool is an infinity pool and had plenty of space throughout our stay. We also used the pool shared with several suites near to ours. There was never anyone else there when we used it. |3. Great location within walking distance of Oia. Note the walk is uphill but most of Santorini is.|4. Concierge if want to organise trips. We didn’t use them but it looked like several did. |5. Great selection at breakfast. Fruits, salads, hams, cheeses, bacon, eggs, sausages, cereals along with many pastries. |6. Resort never seemed busy, so had a nice quiet and relaxed feel. |7. Supermarket was a 10 minute walk away if wanted provisions for room. |8. 25 mins transfer from airport. ||There was one specific reason we gave the resort a 4 rather than 5 being service at breakfast. ||1. Breakfast was a mixed experience for us. Food was good but service inconsistent. Coffee and juice were to order and on several occasions we found coffee coming out was slow (20 minutes one day) and we had to chase. There was also an la carte breakfast menu which wasn’t automatically provided, more of a case of having to ask / know about it rather than be offered it daily. It looked like there may have been smoothies too but they were never mentioned and we never saw anyone have one.
