Santuario de Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco

This church is absolutely stunning and truly a masterpiece of architecture and art. Every inch of its walls and ceilings is adorned with incredible paintings and intricate details, creating a breathtaking visual experience. The atmosphere inside is both awe-inspiring and peaceful, making it a perfect place for reflection and admiration. I was thoroughly impressed by the craftsmanship and the beauty that surrounds you at every turn. Whether you're interested in history, art, or simply looking for a remarkable place to visit, this church is definitely worth your time. I highly recommend taking the opportunity to explore and soak in its grandeur—you won't be disappointed!

Truly Magical! Almost like a movie - inside the sanctuary beyond doors your eyes will see a visual explosion of the most majestic faith and religous sight — every wall, ceiling, and corner narrates the passion of christ. From floor to vaulted ceiling, the sanctuary is filled with intense religious imagery — angels, demons, indigenous motifs, poetic verses, and sculptural illusions that blur the line between painting and architecture. Far beyond a church, it is a sacriligious pilgrimage. I sadly arrived when mass was over, try to arrive before 10:00 am and consider paying extra if you are with a driver to go back since there's no public transportation. There must of been a holy celebration as I was given yummy and authentic sweet and spicy mole with garbanzos and juice in a bag and straw (Yes - very Mexican) I truly recommend visiting this once in a lifetime site!

Mind-blowing. We have seen hundreds of churches around the works and this one is really different with the incredible ceiling works. Well worth the extra time to get there from San Miguel de Allende.

It's a special place, a church decorated like no other declared a UNESCO world heritage site the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, located in Atotonilco, Guanajuato, Mexico, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was designated in 2008, along with the historic town of San Miguel de Allende, for its outstanding example of Baroque art and architecture and its cultural significance as a place of pilgrimage and historical importance in Mexico. Once a year there's a pilgrimage from the church all the way into San Miguel de Allende at 3:00 a.m. in the morning.

Absolutely beautiful place and completely worth the visit. I got some bad information online and got here too early and had to wait for over an hour for them to open. They open at 10:00 AM sharp. It was completely worth the wait. It is a small church so it won't take you but 30 minutes to see it all unless you want to sit and pray. VERY IMPORTANT. If you are coming from San Miguel de Allende get a cab and negotiate the price including the wait time for the cab to wait for you to see the sanctuary and to return you back. You will not be able to find a cab to return back to San Miguel.

As someone ( a logical, 6’-3” very common sense man) who is not normally emotional… my visit here literally brought me to tears. Cannot even begin to describe how humbled, overwhelmed, spiritual, and yet tranquil I became while walking thru this space. While some say it’s like the Sistine Chapel.. I found it to be 100 times more intense. Words cannot even begin to describe my experience. While many may not feel this.. it engulfed me with a sense of peace from God to be more understanding, compassionate , patient and spiritual. If there are miracles .. this can be chalked up to be one of them. Will be returning soon.

Worth the Trek. We were told it’s the oldest continuously running church in the northern hemisphere. It’s like the Sistine Chapel!

Built in the 18th century, the walls and ceilings of the interior are nearly entirely covered in mural work, sculpture, inscriptions and oil paintings in a style called Mexican folk Baroque, although indigenous influence can be seen. Basically, come here to be astonished by the art if nothing else. There is just so much detail you could spend a long time just taking everything in. I was super surprised that photos are allowed. (Obviously no flash) Plus, there was only one section where a donation was needed to get in. Yes, it is a little ways out of the town of SMA, but it is definitely worth the short 20-minute or so journey to come here. After all, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and for good reason.

100% YES!!! This place is really close to San Miguel. It takes about 15 minutes to drive to and the road is roughhhhh! It seems to be okay to park in front and around the santuario. The outside looks run down and not impressive at all but once you enter. WOW! It is quite beautiful. The amount of work that was spent painting the place and restoring it is impressive. We didn't pay a fee but there was a donation request. Don't sleep on this one.

Sad to not be able to reinforce other reviews. After hiring a taxi for the 45 minute drive (from our previous activity on the north side of town), we arrived at 5pm on a Sunday afternoon to find everything locked up. As we were reading the plaque over the door of the adjacent convent, a nun opened the door to call across the street to one of the street vendors, asking if she wanted to come use the bathroom before things were closed up for the day. We took advantage to ask (in native level Spanish) if we could briefly poke our heads in for a look. The answer was a firm "No!", as they were closed. San Miguel de Allende's economy depends largely on attracting tourists, especially foreigners. I would recommend that, despite the traditional Mexican conflict between Church and State, they find a way to coordinate facilitation of tourist visits. This was the second church in two days (out of the three important ones listed in tourism sites) that was closed at an unusually early time of day.

OMG... This Catholic Church in a little village by the name of Atotonilco is mesmerizing. The village consists of about 600 people and a couple of stores surrounding the church. The area is a World Heritage Site with about 5000 visitors a day. Yes you read that right. It's about 30 minutes taxi ride outside of San Miguel de Allende and is worth every minute of it. It is spectacular in every aspect. The ceilings are likened to The Sistine Chapel and no wonder. It's actually difficult to put into words as to how special this place is. The art work is astonishingly beautiful and of course it's a working church with nuns around selling their art work. If you are ever near San Miguel de Allende make a special effort to come here. Truly a place of reflection.

MUST SEE!!! My husband and I were staying in the Rosewood in San Miguel de Allende and the concierge told us about this little town. It is about 20 min drive not too bad. When arriving to this town it is very clean and very quite. Their are signs with directions to the sanctuary. Very easy to find parking across the street. Going inside their is one section that is closed off but you can go in if you pay 15 pesos which is not bad. Bathrooms are located to the right of the church

My husband and I visited Atotonilco while staying in San Miguel de Allende. The frescos in this church are AMAZING! There is also a side of the church that you must pay to enter. It is definitely worth the cost of admission. I was almost moved to tears from how beautiful everything was. Pictures do not do this place justice.
