5 Best Day Trips from Mexico City | Condé Nast Traveler

"This iconic yellow church with a mosaic dome was built in the 16th century above the Great Pyramid of Cholula. It's one of Cholula's most important landmarks, so a variety of visitors, including some pious people praying and spending time in reflection. It's worth visiting the church even if just for the view of Cholula from outside. (At the time of writing, the church was closed due to earthquake damage, but the outside is still open for visitors.)" - Susannah Rigg

Nice church. Steep but short walk up, either stairs or a ramp. And you take the side gate back down to get to the archeological site. It was cool to see them ring the church bell by hand. The inside of the church is actually very big and it's like a house in the back section. I recommend walking behind the altar area to see the rest, there's a door to the left that says "entrada" and it leads in a semi-circle through a bunch of different rooms. Lots of snack and fruit sellers at the bottom.

This is located at the peak of a tall hill (cerro) and it requires that you follow a steady upward ramp or steps that will eventually take you there. You will need to wear comfortable clothes, tennis shoes and take a water bottle. If you are visiting along with an older family member, plan on taking quite a few breaks on the the way up. Elevators are NOT available. Once you reach the peak, the arquitecture of the cathedral along with the 360 degree views of Cholula, mountains & beyond are definitely worth the uphill path. Enjoy!

Ok. It’s a little bit of a walk. Be ready. If is sunny, wear plenty of sunscreen and bring a water with you. Views are amazing. From El Mirador (Crystal Lookout) You can see very far away since they have clear skies. You will find ramps and steps all the way there. There are restrooms available, waters and snacks.

The church was nice, but knowing that the christians built it on top of the mexican biggest pyramid kinda ruined the good feeling about this place.

The beautiful views of the city are worth the climb. The cathedral is also very beautiful.

Beautiful place, worth visiting. Be aware of traffic to Puebla and CDMX

Another amazing Iglesia... There are over 30 churches in Cholula. This one inadvertently constructed on an overgrown "hill" that turned out to be The Great Pyramid of Cholula also known as Tlachihualtepetl (Nahuatl for "made-by-hand mountain"). The church is a beauty, worth the 10 minute walk up the hill and stairs. Great views of the city. Be sure to visit the pyramid and the nearby Museo Regional as well.

As much as I am not a religious person and not really into churches and cathedrals, I quite enjoyed my visit to this church, partly due to the physical exertion needed to hike up here and partly due to the ornateness and detailed exquisiteness of this monument to God. It is obvious that there is a lot of money that is donated here. I spent a good hour here as there was some type of celebration/festival/event which involved a drum and bugle band, a small parade bringing an artifact into the church, and a sea of people. This was one of the highlights of my trip so far. 5 stars.
