Sanzin - Review - Centro - Oaxaca - The Infatuation

"Chapulines and karaage don’t usually end up on the same plate, but here, the union somehow works. This small but mighty restaurant draws us in with its refreshing use of Oaxacan ingredients and traditional preparations paired with Japanese techniques. The result is an out-of-the-box menu that Oaxaca has never seen before. There’s tamamiso with mole, soba noodles made from local wheat, tender tasajo skewers, and a cooling finale in the form of bright, seasonal fruit nieves, like matcha and prickly pear. The cherry on top at this lunch-only spot is the affordable prices and low-key atmosphere." - Mariana Camacho

Wonderful place to see Oaxacan ingredients incorporated creatively into japanese cuisine, talk casually with the chef, and have amazing food! The portions were a good size - our tasting menu had 5-6 courses, and it was well worth the visit; would definitely come again.

Omg! So glad we stumbled upon this spot! We had the salad, bonito and tempura. Food was so fresh, flavors were light and clean and we left feeling full and satisfied and like we’d had really good Japanese food in the middle of Oaxaca! The whole restaurant is one room, table and kitchen all next to each other, so you can watch the chef cook and chat with him too. Great value for the meal we had, too. Definitely recommend stopping in before it becomes more crowded!

Just WOW 🤩. This restaurant is a true gem! I highly recommend making a stop here. The food was absolutely delicious! You can tell that the chef hand selects all his ingredients to provide the freshest most delicious meal and he is highly talented in his craft! You can stop by for a quick bite, or stay a while and try the set which is curated by the chef. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating as well!

This place is so simple but it’s a very sweet find. The food was delicious, fresh, and colorful. This is definitely a place to visit in Oaxaca. We’ll be back! Great food experience.

Went back 4 times during my stay in Oaxaca. Great atmosphere, friendly people and amazing Japanese food. The green tea is also good quality. They use fresh local ingredients and I love the creativity! Everything tasted amazing and walnut tofu was sooo good. They're also attentive and try to give me a different experience every time.

Wonderful dining experience! The taste of the menu is the way to go! So cool to taste a little bit of everything that is on the menu for the day. Everything was prepared right in front of us and was so fresh! The chef was so kind and loved getting to share with us what we were eating! We all loved it! Great Mexican fusion!

We had heard that there is a Oaxacan-Japanese food tradition and wanted to try it, and found this highly rated yet tiny eatery just a few blocks from our hotel. We sat down at one of just three tables, chose the tasting menu (a bargain at just over $20 US each), and so began one of the most memorable and fascinating and utterly delicious meals of our lives. Jiro’s creations are far closer to the spirit of real Japanese cuisine than the sushi that is served in restaurants across Europe and the US. Just as one finds in Japan, his food is made with a master’s obsession with perfection and in the relentless pursuit of freshness and taste. The ingredients are local, from nopal cactus to mountain tomatoes, and the adzuki is made with local frijoles rojos, along with jellies made of zapote negro. Jiro works away on a simple stainless steel table just a few feet away and it is amazing to see him perfecting each dish. His assistant provides gracious and attentive service to the tables, and they work as an excellent team. We will not forget this meal and we hope to return before we leave Oaxaca. Arigato gozaimasu!
