São Filipe Royal Fortress

Stunning fortress in Cidade Velha, the first administrative centre of the island. The town was abandoned in the 1700's

If you want to self-tour the cidade velha, my recommendation would be to ride an aluguer to the city and get the ticket at the fortress. The ticket lets you visit all interest points, there is a hiking map on how to get to each of them, and you get a guided tour to inside the fortress, the guide was a really nice person.

Worth a visit. When you arrive you get a small introduction or the history, after you discover the place yourself. Amazing view as a bonus!

Scenic and breath taking views. Too less information offered for entrance ticket price of 5 Euro per person when you walk around. But you receive a paper flyer in advance.

A must see, but get there before it closes. Not sure why they charge locals. A somber reminder of the islands past… and present… it’s still operated by the Spanish corporation 🤷🏽‍♂️

Worth to visit. The ticket includes a short overview of the history of Cidade Velha and the foretress.

Medieval fortress, cannons, you can buy water and go to WC. The stairs are in good condition. The stairs are not difficult for the healthy elderly. In the middle of the stairs there is a beautiful bar .
