New River North Italian Contender Promises to Go Beyond Spaghetti and Meatballs - Eater Chicago

"Nine months ago, Michael Meranda revealed his plans to open a new Italian restaurant in River North that featured his award-winning gelato. The path to opening Sapori Antichi Bar Italiano hasn’t been as smooth as their tasty Italian desserts are, but on Monday Meranda and wife Mary finally opened their restaurant. They’re serving lunch and dinner with 'an authentic Italian presentation' indicative of 'what’s going on in Italy right now.'" - Ashok Selvam

We live across the street from this new Italian venue, we have seen restaurants in this exact location open and close to many times, probably because there isn't much foot traffic. We waited for a few months before coming here and found the food quality quite pleasing. The portions and flavours were just right, good quality ingredients. It is definitely a good Italian place, but it is just above average to me when comparing to the nearby Italians but the cost is about the same.

Really delicious, authentic-tasting al dente pasta (had the carbonara). The chocolate mousse dessert was perfectly rich and sweet too (pictured)! The environment inside feels a lot like you’re in Italy - with the bar and gelato and some window options behind you as you eat. Wonderful service as well :) happy to come back and try more of the menu.

Great food, authentic Italian coffee bar, award winning gelato. Outdoor seating. Vegan options, too, just ask. Great new neighborhood spot!

Authentic Italian Food that blows everything in the downtown away. Staff is proud and friendly and you feel like you are in Italy. The Wine is awesome and reach out for suggestions. They pointed me to a Pinot Noir that was absolutely fantastic. We had Parmesean Bites as an appetizer and it too was tremendous. The food is beyond awesome. It is not huge in portion size, but enough of what you would want and tastes authentic. This place is my Go To Italian food and I only hope it does not get overwhelmed by the crowds of people that will gravitate to it. It is different than your typical Italian restaurant, but so much better than Quartino, Rosebud, and RPM. You will love it. They will love you for coming there.

Just had lunch here with my family. Absolutely delicious! All the pasta is made in house and accompanied by divine sauces. Extremely authentic Italian food. Homemade award-winning gelato that rotates daily. The staff couldn’t have been nicer.

Authentic Italian food with great service. We had a large group and they were short staffed because of rhe holiday but they were very accommodating. We had brunch andthe egg dishes were unique. I was not that hungry but enjoyed the egg and avocado toast. The chikdren loved the potatoes with gravy (dont recall the Italian name) The owner gave us a complimentary sampling of home made gelato and sorbet and the end of the meal.
