A History of the East Village as NYC’s Most Exciting Dining Neighborhood | Eater NY

"An influential mid-1980s opening (1983–2013), I point out that Sapporo East foreshadowed the rise of Little Tokyo; it closed in 2013 and was replaced by the similar Beronberon." - Nick Solares

Exceptional Sushi Experience at Sapporo East - A True Gem! I can't speak highly enough of Sapporo East Sushi Restaurant - it has become a weekly ritual for my fiance and me, and sometimes we can't resist stopping by more often! From the moment we walk in, we are greeted by the amazing staff who make every visit memorable. In particular, the servers Ferry and Diane are simply outstanding - they have gone above and beyond to make us feel like part of the Sapporo family, always remembering our names and treating us with the utmost care and attention. What truly sets Sapporo East apart is their exceptional sushi quality and inventive rolls. My fiance, who was never a sushi fan before, is now a convert thanks to the incredibly fresh fish and delicious rolls served here. Among our favorite sushi rolls that I highly recommend are the White Sand, Ray's Roll, and the Black Pearl - each one bursting with unique flavors that keep us coming back for more. Every bite is a burst of flavor, and we always leave feeling completely satisfied. We have even made Sapporo East our go-to spot for double dates with friends, as the inviting atmosphere and top-notch service never disappoint. If you're looking for a sushi experience that exceeds expectations, look no further than Sapporo East. We give it five stars without hesitation - this place is a true gem that deserves all the praise it gets!

Google
Both the food and service were average. After reading numerous positive reviews about this place, I decided to give it a try, but unfortunately, both aspects fell below expectations. I arrived an hour before closing, yet it felt like the staff was rushing to get me out. The quality of the rolls was comparable to grocery store sushi, and the raw fish didn’t taste fresh. While this spot might be considered decent for the area, it’s certainly not the best sushi I’ve had.

Dakota N.

Google
The BEST sushi in the area! 🍣 Food is delicious, service was EXTREMELY fast, and the workers are very kind! I would 100% recommend going here if you want super good sushi♥️

Christie A.

Google
This is the best sushi in the area and reasonably priced. The staff is so accommodating and friendly. This is our "go-to" place for sushi.

Google
Excellent!!! I can't say enough about how great this experience was. We had takeout from this location in 2020, but we were always very overwhelmed by the crowds - always seemed too packed to get a table. We made a reservation this time, however, at the hour we went (5pm), it wasn't so bad. It did fill up around the time we were leaving. I can't even remember the rolls we got, but they were DELICIOUS. My favorite thing on the menu is the Maryland spring roll. It's an appetizer, but I could eat it as a meal, it's that good. Service was excellent, as well. The only complaint that I had was that it was a little warm and stuffy in the back where we were seated. Do yourself a favor and go there!!

Julia M.

Google
The food is amazing , service was great , 10/10 recommend! I ordered the Yaki Udon, my fiancé ordered the Seafood hibachi and for appetizer we ordered Gyoza. Also, the to-go boxes are top tier not the flimsy styrofoam.

Michael L.

Google
So i ate here for the first time yesterday and it was excellent will refinery be back. I work in mechanicsburg but live in Gettysburg but the food was still hot when i got home with the exception of some cooked sushi but that's understandable considering it takes me an hour to get home....

Jared B.

Google
This great little gem in Mechanicsburg has a diverse menu with great selections. I'm pretty sure they have the more choices of seafood than any place we have visited in the area. The service was impeccable.

Yelp
Wow what a lovely experience and high quality sushi. I ordered the ORANGE FLAMINGO ROLL  (Spicy salmon covered with salmon, homemade wasabi sauce and sweet chili sauce on top). I also ordered a side dish of fried rice very delicious. My waiter was very friendly and very helpful!
google avatar

Yelp
We've frequented Sapporo East for some time. The last time we went there the whole place smelled like the sewer. It was disgusting! We walked right out. Unless they deal with their disgusting bathroom and the disgusting odor that permeates the restaurant, we will not eat there again. A restaurant that serves raw fish should never smell like that!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Sapporo east was perfect for my sushi craving! The interior of the restaurant was very cute- forget you are on the side of a busy road! The service was great- the wait staff was attentive and the food came out quickly! I enjoyed my meal- all of the sushi tasted great! I would go back if in the area again!

Yelp
Sapporo east is a cute little Japanese restaurant located right on the pike. The inside area is decorated to look mainly like bamboo, with the ceiling resembling a sushi mat. There are two main dining areas in the restaurant, with one side a little more private. They do have sushi, hibachi, fried rice, and a few other things on the menu. This was a visit for international sushi day, so today was all about sushi. One of my friends said "wow this is probably the best spicy tuna roll I've ever had". Specialty rolls that I'd recommend are the Miami Spice Roll (the seared tuna on top makes it 10/10). The Aloha roll has yellowtail inside it that is seared to perfection. The orange flamingo and shrimp tempura were very tasty as well. For the simpler palatte, the japanese bagel roll and spicy tuna roll were great. For those who may want to share sushi and sashimi, they do make sushi boats with a variety of sushi and sashimi to share as well! The service here is good, with multiple servers checking in on you from time to time. Our order did take very long to come out, however, the waiter was nice enough to give us a discount for any inconvenience.
google avatar

Yelp
Great sushi and sashimi choices. This is one of our favorite sushi places around, don't miss out, stop in today for delicious entrees and amazing side dishes for one or to share

Yelp
Had dinner here last Saturday and let me say, we were amazed! We've driven by before but never noticed it because it's a bit tucked in and looks small but it's pretty spacey inside. The food was beautiful and tasty, everything they brought out was delicious! The service was great, very helpful and polite. The atmosphere was calm, bright and we loved the music. They're also open a little later than most sushi restaurants so that's always a huge plus and it's a BYOB! Definitely going back!

Victoria S.

Yelp
The best sushi place in Central PA! Fish is always super fresh, smoked salmon has just the right amount of flavor. Fast, friendly, wonderful staff is a huge plus also
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
If you know, you know this is the best sushi in the area. Ask anyone qualified to recommend sushi and be told this is the place to go because of the fresh seafood and excellent service. Hibachi and teriyaki dishes are right up there as well. Yum! Look at the photos posted and you'll see why this place has been a longtime favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday and it was a little busier than I expected, but we were able to get a spot. The vibe inside was super casual and people were popping in and out quite a bit picking up takeout orders. Our server was efficient and friendly taking our order and bringing out soup and salad before our meals. My dad got the chicken hibachi and my sister and I order some sushi to share. The hibachi was a huge portion and my dad ended up taking half of it home. He said it had really great flavor. All the sushi tasted extremely fresh and I was especially impressed by the nigiri in the sushi combo. The rolls were also really great and filling and prices were super reasonable for everything. I didn't realize the caribbean roll came with wasabi sauce in it (I don't like wasabi), but the sauce actually had a great flavor and wasn't too spicy. I've always heard great things about this spot so i'm glad I finally got to check it out!
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
I have to say that things seem a little less than they were before. Rolls seem a little less. The restaurant itself looks more run down. Still pretty good but Takashi in Camp Hill is way better.
google avatar

Mike I.

Yelp
So love sushi rolls at Sapporo. Hard to beat it ... taste, quality, service. In addition to the typical array of sushi rolls, we got the seafood tempura and steamed edamame appetizer. We are never disappointed !
google avatar

Bob F.

Yelp
The food is always great...fresh and tasty! I love the fact when Ferry sees me and gets me my table right away! Unfortunately, today they had their internet out, kitchen was chaos however when I walked in, I was greeted by smiling face and sat down. He made sure I was taken care of the whole time I was there. He was watching me like a hawk and making sure I was taking care of. This place is under the same ownership of Miso however.....this place has a lot better service then Miso. Please don't get me wrong, the quality of food is exceptional @ both places but I think Miso can learn a lot from the great service of Sapporo East!
google avatar

Derek S.

Yelp
Everything was amazing. The service was kind and attentive, and the food came out quickly. We ordered the Sunset Roll and the Sashimi Combination. The Sunset Roll was good, but we were blown away by the Sashimi. For around 26 dollars, we got 15 pieces of beautiful fish. The tuna was not bitter, and you could taste it well. The white tuna was sweet and savory. The yellowtail was similar to the white tuna in flavor. The octopus was chewy, but not that chewy. The real star of the show was the salmon. It was arranged in a beautiful rose and was so savory and flavorful. The pieces were very big and all of it was extremely fresh. The restaurant was clean and had alright ambience but the food made up for it.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Another great meal from Sapporo. They never disappoint! 1 spider roll 2 spicy tuna rolls 2 white tuna sashimi 1 summer dream roll

Anna G.

Yelp
The restaurant feels dirty. Bathroom was not well kept and peaking into the kitchen it was very unclean looking. Food was okay, not amazing sushi but it was okay. I will try somewhere else next time.
google avatar

Deric L.

Yelp
They have excellent sushi worth driving out of the way for. However, I encountered an issue when picking up a recent to-go order: I mistakenly thought their web site listed a yellowtail roll for $4.50. I was therefore surprised when I was charged $7.50. In discussing this with the employee that helped me, I was informed that the price on the web site was incorrect, that it had been for some time and that he was aware of the discrepancy. I was naturally a bit peeved when he wouldn't make a price adjustment. Rather, when I was unwilling to pay what I believed was an incorrect price, he removed the roll from my to-go container. It turns out that I'd looked at the menu wrong, but I didn't learn this until the owner / management responded to an earlier two-star review. (I appreciate them reaching out.) Long story short, this situation should have been handled better in the restaurant. Given that my error kicked off the unfortunate chain of events, however, I'm fine letting this go. As anticipated, the sushi I did return home with was delicious.
google avatar

Cass O.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years, even before my yelp years! Sushi is great! Staff is great! *it is always cold so bring a sweater* They have a great lunch deal! This price is great if you want sushi and don't want to pay a lot of money!
google avatar

I G.

Yelp
This is my to-go sushi place, and I often pick up takeout from them. It's a casual atmosphere with attentive service. I love their house special roll and seafood soup.
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
We always have a good time going to Sapporo East, their sushi is one of the best in the area! We always get one of the Flamingo rolls, if not both ;)
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
The last two times I have eaten here at least one of the items in my sushi dish has tasted like detergent and has left my lips, throat, and tongue burning. Same detergent taste both times. It's making me seriously consider whether or not I want to return. I was just there a few minutes ago and the burning is pretty bad. I drank as much water as possible. While I hate a mildew flavor you sometimes get with some sushi places, due to the moisture issues, its preferable to the burning from detergent. Ugh.

Karen W.

Yelp
We have not found a good Japanese restaurant since moving from Northern VA. Now we have !!! Wow.

Shawn W.

Yelp
Someone with any intelligence should adjust your operating hours. I know it's difficult and you expect a 20% tip for nothing but it's just a suggestion. Tried to eat here at 9:30 on a Saturday, sign said open but all of the employees were leaving. Can't support stupidity!
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Had the L3 lunch special and was not impressed whatsoever. The coworkers I was with ordered specialty rolls and enjoyed them very much - so maybe I just ordered the wrong meal. The locale has a decent amount of seating and had a good lunch crowd.

Yelp
Overview: Japanese restaurant offering various items, with a focus on sushi. Food: Sapporo East is definitely a favorite spot for me to go when I get a sushi craving. They have a wide variety of rolls to choose from at very reasonable prices. I have always found their sushi to be very fresh! I will note that their rolls are HUGE. Much larger than the standard, which can make them a bit of a challenge to eat. Not a problem for me, but I know some people do not enjoy this. One off-putting element to me is their use of "white tuna" in their sushi rolls. "White tuna" is not tuna at all, but rather escolar which contains an oil that is indigestible in humans. Recommend: Valentine's Roll (special board) Sunrise Roll Atmosphere: Sapporo is a medium sized restaurant, with some smaller and larger tables and a central sushi bar. The place is cozy and clean. Service: The first time I went to Sapporo, it was packed! But I still had excellent service. This has not changed. The servers are courteous, prompt, and polite.

Yelp
We love this restaurant...they have excellent sushi. We were a regular prior to COVID. During COVID, they were take out only...and we don't do take out. We were super excited that they finally opened up for dine in service...yay yay yay!!!. Excellent as always!

Yelp
This is by far the BEST sushi around! After trying just about all the local sushi spots, once we found Sapporo we never looked back. We've been coming here for years now (sometimes multiple days per week) and have tried just about everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. The sushi is made fresh to order and you can tell that the fish is fresh and hasn't been sitting out for days. Our favorite rolls are the volcano special, Caribbean, and pink flamingo, but we've had just about roll they offer and have yet to find one that disappointed us! The tempura appetizers and cucumber salad are also great ways to start off a meal. This place is BYOB and they don't charge a fee to open the bottle. The staff is amazing, nearly everyone in the place stops by to make sure everything is ok. Parking out front can be a little tough if you come during peak hours, but don't fear they have extra spots to the left of the dry cleaners next door. This family also owns Miso in Harrisburg, so if you find yourself on the east shore you'll be able to get the same amazing food!
google avatar

Paulette W.

Yelp
This place is consistently on point! We have stopped in a few times lately, and have walked away very pleased. They seat you super quick and make you feel welcome ....like they already know you. The service is super fast!! I love the unsweetened iced green tea and often take some to go, its so refreshing. The sushi is just delicious and fresh, and everything else we have ordered lately is so yummy! Hibachi steak with veggies, shrimp fried rice, wonton soup, it was all amazing. I think right now it is placing number one for our favorite sushi place in Harrisburg. You can tell they are popular, it is always busy, and seems like a lot of regulars too. Good sign for sure. Make sure to check the daily specials board up front for the sushi specials! Also, it is BYOB, they don't serve alcohol here on their own.

Jade G.

Yelp
Consistently awesome sushi. Love it here, love the environment, and have returned and ordered dozens of times! Favorite family rolls: rainbow, angel hair, spicy scallop.

Sandy G.

Yelp
We were very pleased with Sapporo East. It really doesn't look like much from the outside so don't be discouraged. This was a happy mistake for us. We have friends up from Pittsburgh and it's their anniversary so we wanted to take them someplace they really like to go and that is a hibachi restaurant. The food was wonderful, the service was excellent, the price wasn't bad either. The only reason I gave them four stars is because we thought it was a hibachi place where we sit at the table and they give you a show; that was not the case. Other than that, it was the most wonderful place and we will be going back!

Theresa F.

Yelp
Greg service is always great and the sushi is wonderful! My husband loves that he can get hibachi or teriyaki PLUS sushi. This place has finally converted him into a sushi fan!

Christina G.

Yelp
This is our go to place for our Friday Night Sushi date! Every roll we try is fantastic and they are accommodating every time I ask them to hold the wasabi but bring a small side of eel sauce. It's BYOB they are happy to bring a chiller for your bottle. The wait staff is quick and courteous every time.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
I have loved Sapporo since they opened and everything is always amazing. The sushi and rolls are always fresh, if they have Uni in stock, get it. It's incredible. The staff is friendly and remember you, the chefs are very talented and take pride in their work. I've never had a bad meal here!
google avatar

Bruce L.

Yelp
Solid lunch menu...ordered the non raw cooked lunch special and hibachi steak and chicken....hit the spot...
google avatar

Vicki C.

Yelp
Hands down the best sushi restaurant in the area! Even after living in Philly, this place is still one of my favorite sushi restaurants. I grew up in the area and always have to stop in for a meal when I visit home. FOOD: You can never go wrong with the chirashi bowl, which has a good selection and variety of fresh fish. My favorite rolls include the aloha, volcano special, spider, and orange flamingo. I would also suggest the seared tuna/salmon or hot bowl for appetizers. On top of really great sushi and sashimi, the salad is so good. I don't know how they make the dressing, but I have yet to find another place that makes the ginger dressing that delicious! I usually come in for dinner, but they also have a good lunch menu. The staff here are all very friendly and attentive. The restaurant is cute and decorated nicely, perfect for a casual meal or a nice night out. Definitely would recommend to everyone!
google avatar

Allie H.

Yelp
(10+ checks ins)I come here a lot and will not be returning anymore. No more chances after seeing (and tasting) their poor seafood cleansing practices. I ordered several items with shrimp...and a side of shrimp feces. Look at my pics! My seafood fried rice had improperly cleaned shrimp with poop dangling out. The mussels were gritty, the fish was bland. The eggs were burnt, scraped from the bottom of a pan and had eggshells! The rice was dry, flavorless and made completely differently then normal. Maryland spring rolls had more shrimp than crab with lots of strips of shrimp feces too! What the heck?! I really thought this place was ok, but the last few times I have come, it has slowly gone downhill. Today was the last straw... I came at peak time sunday and they cannot handle it. The only reason they were OK before was because they were not full. Don't come here. Go to Sakura down the road instead!
google avatar

Stephanie I.

Yelp
Great selection--was able to find something for the whole family. :) Prices are good. As a sushi fan who has ordered from many places, I would give this a high rating. It's not my absolute #1 favorite sushi, but it is very, very good!
google avatar

Tom C.

Yelp
Fresh food, great recipes, and very good sushi. Service was excellent despite it being very busy. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Diana D.

Yelp
Believe it or not, I've never had fresh sushi. So when I asked a friend where she wanted to go for her birthday lunch, this was her selection. She had been here previously. I told her that I would let her order for me since I wasn't familiar enough to choose my own. With some help from our server, we chose the shrimp dumplings as an appetizer, and the Angel Hair and Seared Tuna Rolls. I seriously cannot believe what I've been missing! These rolls had the freshest ingredients imaginable and the shrimp dumplings were out of this world. An approximate 16-20 count shrimp enveloped in a perfectly cooked dumpling. I only wish my favorite, local Chinese takeout place had something like them. Our server was very prompt and helpful. I cannot wait to go back!!
google avatar

Stacy M.

Yelp
WOW I don't know how this place has the reviews it has, apparently people in this area don't know what good fresh sushi is. My lobster was like a rubber ball as well as the shrimp. There was sand in my one roll, my wife bit down on it and I thought she broke her tooth. STAY CLEAR OF THIS SHAMEFUL PLACE!!! They gave us a roll we didn't even order that had eel in it and refused to make it right. My wife is allergic to eel!!!! This place is a joke!!!!!
google avatar

Ross D.

Yelp
Some the best sushi in the Harrisburg area. Well priced, fresh seafood, and excellently prepared. Would recommend the goods and volcano roll.
google avatar

Tj B.

Yelp
We have tried this place numerous times and it has been always below average. There are much better places to go to besides here. The food is always bland, soggy, or undercooked. We finally have decided this was the last trip for us. Very mediocre food for the price that was paid.
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
I know restaurants can get busy on a Saturday night, especially Sapporo East. We had a larger (10+ people) party, had called ahead for seating, we were assured that a table would be ready at a certain time (they do not take reservations, per se). Everyone in our group brought their own alcohol, wine, beer whatever it was. Once we arrived we waited and waited and waited.... The staff didn't combine any tables to accommodate our group (though they easily could have), after about 45 minutes we even asked to be seated separately. At this point they had seated everyone else who came in after us, about 12 - 15 people. Basically they kept telling us to wait till another large group had left. For the next thirty five minutes they kept telling us "that table will be open soon, they are leaving" despite the fact that there people pouring glasses of wine and chit chatting but not eating any food. My pregnant wife then had a seat at the sushi bar after standing an hour+, and after 2 minutes the waitress came over and said she needed the seat my wife was sitting in. ARE YOU KIDDING ME SAPPORO EAST!? you cant even sit us, now you want my pregnant wife's chair!? Finally having had enough our party left, as we were leaving the waitress kept begging us to wait, saying that the other table would be open soon HAHAHA! In summary I was prepared to wait, but the staff was rude & made no attempt to accommodate our party. EPIC FAIL!
google avatar

Angel R.

Yelp
Just arrived in the area and decided to try the local sushi. I must say that I was not disappointed at all. The sushi was fresh and the size of the rolls and amount of seafood were adequate. The location is convenient w plenty of parking and the staff were friendly and attentive. My lunch order of a roll and hibachi came with a salad and miso soup and I had enough to take some home.
google avatar

Contessa D.

Yelp
We have been coming to this restaurant for over a decade now. Food is consistently delicious. Our go to rolls are house special and angel hair rolls .. melts in your mouth with flavors popping everywhere. Also love their rainbow roll each and every time very clean taste. Very friendly and laid back atmosphere. One of our go to restaurants in the area.

Dan W.

Yelp
Really great place. The seafood soup was delicious, big portion, and filled with lots of seafood. Also had the Lucky roll which was excellent as well. Brought our own beer, they provide glasses and bottle opener. Can't go wrong with Sapporo East.
google avatar

Jacqueline S.

Yelp
The best place to get sushi in the area. I have eaten here probably once a month for the last 4 years I've been living in the area. The sushi is always fresh the staff is always kind and helpful. Prices are fair and competitive for the are. They are BYOB too which is a plus!
google avatar

Hannah D.

Yelp
I have been going here for years and I have never once been disappointed! Amazing sushi and entrees!! Staff is always welcoming and accommodating. My favorite rolls are the angel hair roll and house special roll! Sapporo East is a must go.
google avatar

Vishal S.

Yelp
We stopped by Sapporo the other day looking for something get for dinner one Tuesday evening. It was close to 9 PM so we were not sure if we could get a restaurant in this part of the world to seat us. Fortunately for us, Sapporo was not only open, but had a fair number of people dining there at this hour! Service was comparable to any other Asian restaurant - erratic and "Asian" polite a.k.a. polite with a hint of military ordering! Food was good though! We ordered a bunch of sushi, sashimi, and yaki soba! My wife who is not a big fan of sashimi, went on to have seconds! Miso soup was warm at best but we here happy with the dining experience and will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jillian P.

Yelp
THE BEST sushi on the west shore. You will not be disappointed--every thing is extremely fresh & delicious!! The only place I'll get sushi.
