Where To Order Passover Meals for Carryout or Delivery in Chicago

"Skokie’s huge kosher market, formerly Hungarian Kosher Foods, is offering several Passover box packages that serve four to five people. Most of the boxes mix familiar options like matzo ball soup and chicken schnitzel with more unusual entrees, such as salmon teriyaki. One box, however, highlights Sephardic and Mizrahi-style options such as Mediterranean beef stew and Moroccan eggplant salad. Reserve boxes and a la carte items using an online form." - Naomi Waxman

Love this place. Had a chat with the owner today and thanked him for creating such a pleasant kosher experience. For the traveler who doesn’t want to get restaurant food but rather home cooking, this is perfect. Healthy options aplenty. Clean kitchen. Fresh. Helpful staff.

This is a very clean and organized store. Staff is very hands-off. You probably won't really need any help, but the very little staff I saw, seemed preoccupied.

Good food but the manager was very rude. I have a service dog and she kept telling me I needed to show her my papers. I kept telling her by law I do not have to carry any papers with me but she kept insisting. Perhaps she should look up the law before she harasses someone with a service dog. So the owner responded but clearly does not know the law. As the owner of the store you and your employees are allowed to ask me 2 questions. 1) Is my dog a service dog and 2) what service he provides. You are NOT allowed to ask me for papers. Feel free to look up on the ADA website to learn these rules. Very disappointed in this establishment.

The only place that I could find farfel! My sister and I were craving our Mom’s favorite side dish with sautéed onions and mushrooms!

The largest Kosher Supermarket in Chicago. Great Deli and Sushi. Sushi manager is a legend and so is the Deli manager and store manager. Great selection

Google
They have really stepped it up here. Sushi, big deli with lots of prepared food, a great wine selection, and their new bakery is pretty fantastic. Had one of the best kosher dairy pastries there. Generally very impressed and it's come a long way from the Hungarian days.

I just found out this used to be Hungarian. They now serve the St. Louis area (once a month). They have ready to go convenient food. Good for Shabbat. A Judaics section, and a plethora of wine.

Yelp
The mushroom/onion kugel is delicious. The deli ladies are oftentimes rude and dismissive.

Yelp
Updated rating. Reasoning: - on a Friday at 10-11am, lower crowd, organized staff, the deli was friendly, and efficient. The cashier was also efficient. Smooth sailing through checking out is important to me because I get anxiety. I appreciate that the area around the checkout isn't full of other merchandise. I also feel the veggies and fruit were well organized and very fresh for a good price. Small watermelon $2.99

Yelp
It has been many years since we visited the Hungarian. And, we were very surprised to learn it isn't the same Hungarian anymore. It's better. What I recall from the past is quite different than what you will find today. The old Hungarian was an old market. Things were not set up well or easily found. And, at times it didn't always look clean. Enter Sarah's Tent and things have drastically changed (for the good). They still have a wide variety of meat, fish, groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen foods, wine, etc. Looking at it, the way they redecorated the store feels more open and welcoming. We were shopping for Passover, which has its own foods. Most of what you eat throughout the year cannot be eaten on this holiday. (Look it up if you want to learn more.) Their selection was outstanding. As someone who can't eat anything made with milk and doesn't tolerate gluten well, I found so many gluten-free, dairy-free foods it was paradise. Their bakery was very well stocked and similarly had the foods I could eat. We bought a lot from the bakery so we would have more after the holiday is over. And, their wine selection was excellent. Many of their wines come from Israily vineyards but there is also a wide variety from other parts of the world. We splurged on a few bottles. Like every other Kosher markets, expect to see higher prices than you would expect. There are reasons for the extra costs so, for the most part, it is understandable. On the other hand, I simply can't justify all of it. Since we don't usually buy kosher foods, and don't plan to go back for a while, we spent the extra money to get items not stocked at Jewel, Trader Joe's, Mariano's, etc. So go and check it out. You may walk out with a few things you won't find elsewhere. Or, maybe you will go to look. You will certainly see people you don't typically find on street corners in the suburbs.

Yelp
I don't usually write a negative review but this issue is troublesome. I am writing for my mother who is almost 100 yrs old and has shopped at Hungarian and now Sarah's tent. My mom bought meat kreplah for her chicken soup for the holidays. When she was ready to use the item we noticed the expiration date was dated for a date in 2014. The caregiver and my mom took the product back to Sarah's Tent and spoke with the manager thinking they would give her her money back since she shops there all the time. The manager would not give her her money back and said the kreplah was made in 2014 and is good until 2028. This does not sound right. It is not healthy for food and is not good customer service. We will not be shopping there in the future.

Yelp
Do NOT shop here. There is no customer service and your patronage is not appreciated. From the owner down to the employees, they are all rude and unprofessional.

Yelp
The improvement on the previous shop has been really striking. Previously, there would be entire aisles that were bare, and the liquor/beverage section felt like walking into an "employees only" area. Under the new ownership, you now walk into a really nice produce section with a wide selection of produce that looks very fresh. Entering the grocery store itself continues the positive experience - no longer are there empty shelves. There's a great variety of frozen foods, what seems like a solid kosher selection, an improved deli, a bakery, and a more-upscale liquor section. All in all, it's great to have a grocery store just a block from where I work. I can stock up and also know that I don't have to go to Subway if I forget my lunch!

Yelp
Since Sarah's Tent bought Hungarian it has gotten better and better. If memory serves, they bought it at about this time (pre-Pesach) a couple of years ago. We went for the first time about then and were blown away by their prepared food section. They have made continued improvements ever since. They have a huge variety of interesting meats, and cheeses, several kinds of fish, a better bakery, they've replaced the alcohol section with a gigantic produce area and they now have a smaller but upscale alcohol area, and the sushi station is amazing. The layout has been arranged so that it no longer feels cramped and crowded and it is definitely cleaner. Additionally you can get all of your kashrut needs met. Some prices are quite high and others more reasonable but you get what you pay for. There is plenty of helpful staff around . The parking lot is more than adequate.

Yelp
As kosher restaurants go, they're either fantastic or a bust. Unfortunately, this place was a bust. Residing in San Diego, originally from NYC, I have had the distinct pleasure of amazing kosher pizza. Visiting Chicago, I heard through the grapevine about Sarah's Tent. Let me say, the pizza was such a disappointment. It was greasy, beyond what pizza is expected to be. The box has absorbed so much oil that it left a grease stain in my rental car! When I phoned, the attitude of the manager was so standoffish. She gave me a reply as though she didn't care. Shame on you! An eatery should take pride in their cuisine, even if it's pizza.

Yelp
I was really hoping to find some Hungarian items, like ground poppyseeds and sour cherries. In fact I really didn't see any Hungarian items. Another yelper mentioned buying kishke, but didn't even see that. We ended up getting some other yummy items such as eggplant salad, kasha and pastrami. It's more of a medium size produce market with over-priced deli items. But has a lot of packaged kosher items and some meats. Meh, maybe I just built it up in my head more than what it is. I probably go to a deli closer to me next time.

Yelp
When Hungarian owned the store I would go in there for odds and ends. Now that Sarahs bought and redid the place I was in there more often until today. I purchased strawberries two days ago and opened them up this morning and found that every one was either brused or growing mold. The manager who i showed the berries to this noon looked at the package saw their pricing stickers on the package but would not do anything to solve the problem as i didnt have a reciept from the store. LAST TIME THAT I WILL GO INTO THE STORE FOR ANYTHING I also found out that ANYTHING that you buy there has to be returned within three days even if you have a reciept this includes produce as well as canned and frozen goods.

Yelp
I've been shopping at Sara's 10/Hungarian for over 35 years. I was shopping on Friday just before 1 o'clock. For a lot of items for Shabbos and for the next two weeks. Did I mention I travel three hours to get to Chicago to get kosher food. When I got home I realized Sheryl meat items were missing which were on my receipt. Was too late to call on FridayAnd I called first thing this morning when they opened. The woman I spoke with said nope nothing was left didn't put anything aside thanks for calling. Anyone else have problems not having all of their items when they get home?
