It has been many years since we visited the Hungarian. And, we were very surprised to learn it isn't the same Hungarian anymore. It's better.
What I recall from the past is quite different than what you will find today. The old Hungarian was an old market. Things were not set up well or easily found. And, at times it didn't always look clean.
Enter Sarah's Tent and things have drastically changed (for the good). They still have a wide variety of meat, fish, groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen foods, wine, etc. Looking at it, the way they redecorated the store feels more open and welcoming.
We were shopping for Passover, which has its own foods. Most of what you eat throughout the year cannot be eaten on this holiday. (Look it up if you want to learn more.) Their selection was outstanding. As someone who can't eat anything made with milk and doesn't tolerate gluten well, I found so many gluten-free, dairy-free foods it was paradise.
Their bakery was very well stocked and similarly had the foods I could eat. We bought a lot from the bakery so we would have more after the holiday is over. And, their wine selection was excellent. Many of their wines come from Israily vineyards but there is also a wide variety from other parts of the world. We splurged on a few bottles.
Like every other Kosher markets, expect to see higher prices than you would expect. There are reasons for the extra costs so, for the most part, it is understandable. On the other hand, I simply can't justify all of it. Since we don't usually buy kosher foods, and don't plan to go back for a while, we spent the extra money to get items not stocked at Jewel, Trader Joe's, Mariano's, etc.
So go and check it out. You may walk out with a few things you won't find elsewhere. Or, maybe you will go to look. You will certainly see people you don't typically find on street corners in the suburbs.
