The 20 Essential Nairobi Restaurants

"You can’t talk about Nairobi’s history without mentioning Thorn Tree, an open-air cafe that sits within Sarova Stanley, the oldest hotel in the city. The cafe gets its name from a massive acacia tree that grows smack in the middle of the space; in the ’50s, the tree served as a post office of sorts for patrons, who would pin letters to its trunk. Today, it’s still an ideal meeting place, particularly for business travelers and history buffs keen to take a tour of the hotel, which has hosted guests like Ernest Hemingway and Franklin Roosevelt. Time your visit to partake in the hotel’s lavish Swahili breakfast buffet for a chance to sample coastal dishes like mahamri (fried doughnut spiced with cardamom), mbaazi (pigeon peas in coconut milk), bhajia (spiced, deep fried potatoes), mkate wa sinia (rice bread), and kaimati (fried sweet dumplings)." - Wendy Watta, Soni Adriance

It's a fantastic place to stay since all necessities like food and drinks are sold within the hotel. It's a serene place to have meetings because of the quiet and harmonious environment. Everything about the place is fantastic, the only reason the location is 4 stars it's because when you leave the hotel and the first thing to visit you is the loud busy town which is the opposite of the inside of the hotel. Apart from that it's an amazing place to be in

Sarova Stanley is centrally located in Nairobi’s Central Business District and stands among the top five-star hotels in the city. My wife and I stayed in the luxurious Karen Blixen Suite, named in her honor, and enjoyed an unforgettable luxury experience in the very heart of Nairobi. From the moment we arrived, a highly dedicated team was on hand to provide exceptional, personalized service. It is this unwavering commitment to excellence that truly defines Sarova Stanley and sets it apart as one of the finest hotels in Nairobi. Staying at Sarova Stanley is about far more than just a room or suite. With prestigious accolades such as Best Luxury Heritage Hotel in Africa and Best Luxury City Hotel in Kenya from the World Luxury Hotel Awards, the hotel’s reputation among Nairobi’s five-star properties is a testament to the memorable experiences it consistently delivers. Whether visiting for business or leisure, Sarova Stanley offers everything one could wish for: 210 elegant rooms and suites, world-class dining featuring international cuisine, a refined bar and lounge, a rooftop pool, a well-equipped health club, and several modern meeting rooms—making it a leading choice among conference hotels in Nairobi. All of this is set within a rich heritage atmosphere, seamlessly blended with modern comforts for a truly luxurious stay.

I stayed at the Sarova Stanley in Nairobi for two nights right before catching my flight down to Mombasa, and honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better place to kick off the trip. From the moment I walked in, the vibe just felt right: classic, a bit old-school elegant, but still warm and welcoming. The lobby with that famous Thorn Tree notice board brought back memories of stories my dad used to tell about travelers leaving messages there in the old days. Super cool to see it still going strong.|My room was spacious, spotlessly clean, and the bed was one of those “why can’t every hotel have beds this comfortable” kinds. After a long flight into JKIA, I basically face-planted into it and didn’t move for hours. The air-con worked perfectly (huge relief in Nairobi’s heat), and it was surprisingly quiet considering it’s right in the middle of the city. I could hear a bit of street noise if I opened the window, but with it closed you’d never know you were in the CBD.|Breakfast at the Thorn Tree Café was a proper treat: fresh fruit, good coffee, pastries, full English, Kenyan staples, and they even had guys making omelettes and waffles on the spot. I went back for seconds both mornings, no shame. The pool on the rooftop (5th floor) is small but perfect for a quick dip to cool off, and the view over the city is actually really nice, especially at sunset with a Tusker in hand from the bar.|Staff were the highlight though. Everyone from the doormen to the front desk to the servers greeted you like they actually meant it. I had a super early flight to Mombasa and they packed me a breakfast box without me even asking the night before; little things like that make all the difference when you’re traveling.|Location-wise, it’s hard to beat. Literally a 5-minute walk to Kencom for matatus or taxis, close enough to grab late-night nyama choma if you want, and I felt totally safe walking around the area even after dark.|If I’m ever back in Nairobi (and I hope I am), I’m staying here again without a second thought. 5 solid stars. Worth every shilling.

An all-around wonderful experience at the Thai Chi Restaurant!||Our visit to Thai Chi was simply fantastic! The service was first-class — especially our waiter Alex, who made our evening truly unforgettable. He was incredibly helpful, friendly, and attentive, gave us great recommendations, and really went out of his way to make sure we felt comfortable.||The food was also outstanding: an absolute highlight in terms of flavor and beautifully presented at the same time. You could truly see the love and attention to detail in every dish. Everything was fresh, aromatic, and exceeded our expectations.

My stay at this hotel in Nairobi was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The city is wonderful, and the hotel made it even better. I spent nearly 70 working days here, and during that time, the entire team — from housekeeping to reception to security, from the junior staff to the senior ones — truly became my family.|The food was clean, delicious, and varied, especially the Swahili dishes on Fridays, which were always exceptional.|The hotel is spotless, centrally located, and the area is very safe, which made my stay comfortable and reassuring.|Thank you to everyone… and a special thanks to Maxwell and Emily for their kindness and continuous support.|Thank you Sarova, thank you Mr.Ronnie for all the wonderful moments .

Lovely rooms, restaurant and room service food was great, breakfast lovely, staff fab. Great atmosphere inc blues music. Only negatives - took so long and lots of chasing to get a cot and was nearly midnight by the time we got (we arrived after 10pm or close to). Big shout out to one of the staff in the downstairs restaurant/ breakfast next morning (15-17 October). My mind has gone blank on her name but so sweet and great with kids.
