Mission Beach Icon Saska’s Gets New Owner - Eater San Diego

"Mission Beach steakhouse Saska’s, open since the 1950’s, is now part of OMG Hospitality, which runs five restaurants in San Diego including the Union Kitchen & Tap locations in Encinitas and the Gaslamp, and is affiliated with Mission Beach’s Sandbar Sports Grill and the Fish Shops in Pacific Beach and Encinitas. OMG Hospitality founder Eric Leitstein was the winning bidder in an auction process that started earlier this year to sell off properties formerly owned by The Patio Group, which purchased Saska’s in 2015. The 2,740-square-foot restaurant closed on April 25 after being temporarily run by the Cohn Restaurant Group since last September. Leitstein has been dining at Saska’s since the 90’s, when he purchased his first property nearby — the legendary Canes Bar & Grill — and has remained connected to the area ever since. His corporate office is located blocks from the Mission Boulevard restaurant and three of OMG Hospitality’s eateries — Waterbar, PB Alehouse, and Backyard Kitchen & Tap — are just up the street in Pacific Beach. Leitstein, who named the hospitality group after his three children, intends to eventually pass the restaurant on to them, saying, ”We are excited to carry on the tradition of a family-owned steakhouse in Mission Beach.” Leitstein will wait until the dine-in ban has been lifted to reopen, but in the meantime he plans to warm up the restaurant’s interior and update its cocktail program. He says he will not be making many changes to Saska’s existing menu, even retaining longtime chef Francisco Barrios, who has been with the restaurant for nearly 30 years." - Candice Woo

Where to Eat Steak in San Diego

"After a massive interior renovation, which was completed in early 2017, The Patio Group’s Mission Beach steakhouse is back and swankier than ever. The menu serves a variety of dishes, but the main focus are its steaks." - Jackie Bryant

A lovely little restaurant! The decor is nostalgic, our server Kristin was just the sweetest, the steak was mouthwatering and the cocktails were thoughtful and made well. Will def be coming back! Parking is kind of difficult but it's worth it.

Every cool area needs a classic steak house with a sassy male bartender (Billy) that appears to have grown up there, maybe not?, But he may have, we enjoyed all interactions with him. The food was great, service the same. Pours are good, quality all the way. See you again soon.

Comfortable ambiance. Delicious prime rib and potato (either baked or mashed). (The scalloped potatoes were made with blue cheese and I didn't try it.) Very friendly wait staff. Salad oddly served in a high sided bowl. The table height was about 2 inches too high making for awkward dining.

Google
Best cocktail and steak HH! You can sit anywhere and get a $12 steak with a $6 cocktail. Go for the Mezcal. Still dreaming of the Mashed potatoes. Skip the ceviche.

When thinking old school steakhouse I expect a few things. One of those it a wait staff - - the bartender was covering both sides of the restaurant. He was focusing on his real job and I can't fault him. There was no one at the front door and I noted things were coming off the menu an hour before close. I wonder if I just picked the wrong night.

We loved Saskas so much we spent two of our three dinners here! Delicious food, great atmosphere, reasonable prices.

Google
This place was amazing! Real steak knifes, steak cooked right! Even the bread was top notch! Definitely one of my new favorite restaurants! Can't wait to go back

What were we thinking! We lived 10 blocks away for 6 years and had never tried Saska's? AMAZING! Just don't tell anyone.. . We don't want it to get too crowded!

Yelp
What a relaxing dinner experience with A+ service. Food was so delicious, impeccable staff. Perfect way to end a holiday weekend in San Diego CA.

Yelp
Amazing service! Not only is the food great but we sat upstairs (outside) later on a Saturday night and Brian asked if we were cold. He ended up bringing us our own heater! Overall great experience! We will be back.

Yelp
I can make defrosted food and make it as good, but not $12. for ap. the plates that they give you are getting smaller every day. False advertisement for Bday will make you think twice about what advertisement means. It has nothing to do with your birthday till the next week or two that maybe they have you sign and than send piece of paper in after they will probably will lose it and....guess what? You don't get anything for it. I had a terrible experience sitting next to wonderful person, but I was a bomb about to explode n hundred degrees and they served you bad wine for $8.-9. dollars and I said it was bad but she said "I was in the wrong" :(( I'll never go back again.

Yelp
Had a very enjoyable steak and shrimp dinner with my family on vacation! Like the atmosphere and our waiter was great. We will be returning next time we visit mission beach.

Yelp
Saska's is a good time. Very good fresh fish, great staff, nice roof top bar with full menu and plenty of umbrellas to enjoy the day and not get cooked in the sun and a damn fine mai thai topped with 151 like it's supposed too.

Yelp
Ok pricing but terrible service. This is our second time... We thought the first might have been an off night, but we were wrong. 20+ min to get a drink, and crazy long to get food. We were one of 3 tables in the place so it wasn't like there was a reason. Really bummed about the experience. I wouldn't recommend it.

Yelp
Top quality sushi, awesome staff, quick service. Very enjoyable!

Yelp
I don't know how you keep your doors open. Your chicken taste like rubber. My caterpillar roll was a joke with the tiniest piece of eel within each piece that I could barely see it. Totally disgusted and will never be back. Not to mention that you microwave your edamame instead of boiling it. Your atmosphere is tacky and completely outdated. Don't eat at the steakhouse either. Same atmosphere and the scallops are overcooked and tasteless. I wish we complained and left without having to pay.

Yelp
Very disappointed in this whole experience. There was no one there when we got there, and when we finally got our order we only got half our order. When we complained, they basically said "too bad". They charged us for the 20oz beers but we only got the bottles, which were smaller. VERY disappointed.

Yelp
Writing this since we just had dinner here and this place doesn't deserve the multiple one star ratings. The waiters and service were really good - we got waited on right away, and they were attentive to refill our tea. Food was good though they could kick it up a notch. We live at Mission beach in the summer and are thrilled to find good restaurants we can walk to. They have big screens to watch sports and the decor and patio heaters are cool!! We will go back, hope to have the same or better meal, it'll be a four or five star then for sure!!
