I have FINALLY found good brisket!!! I unfortunately don't live in Ann Arbor but am in town for appointments. I wanted to try some BBQ and stumbled across this place. I'm from Texas so I LOVE BBQ. One of the customers told me "it's good stuff" and he was right. The brisket was very flavorful and good and the brioche buns were soft and moist. The sides I didn't care much for. The potato was VERY bland and had no taste or seasoning. Definitely needed salt. The baked beans were ok but when I added their hot bbq sauce to it that upped the flavor. The collard greens were decent. Needed some salt to bring out the flavor. The customer service was excellent and the guy at the register was very nice, courteous, and helpful. I will definitely be back!

Food was pretty mid to be honest…I ordered the rib platter that came with the 4 sides and bread. The ribs were kind of tough for some pieces, others were fall off the bone. The sauce was pretty decent to me but my wife didn’t care for them too much. The beans were just ok as well. Potato salad was good! The coleslaw was honestly just like the slaw you get from a bag at the grocery store just dumped in a bowl. The macaroni and cheese was also just ok. The service was great though. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Plenty of seating. Clean bathrooms. Wheelchair accessible. I’d probably come back lol wife probably won’t.

We had Satchel's BBQ cater an event that we had for outstanding adoptive families at a church in the area. I must say that if you are considering using them, don't hesitate! The food was amazing! We did pay extra to have a staff stay and serve the food for the entirety of our event, his name was Aaron, and he was wonderful as well! Very friendly and went above and beyond to ensure that everything ran smoothly and the food was hot and fresh for our guests! 10/10 would recommend Satchel's! Our office uses Satchel's catering a few times per year. The food is always delish. Brisket, mac and cheese and green beans are huge favorites. Their baked beans are the absolute best! We recently did an off site event for which Satchel's delivered. They were right no time and the food was hot and packaged really well.

We are regular take out customers, always enjoying the pulled pork. The smoked leg of lamb was a great change up, delicious, tender, and flavorful. The men behind the counter were gracious and helpful even when this senior didn't pick the right time for pickup. Thank you for being located close to our home, too. PS Of course, we will be back!

Hugh was such a helpful part of our catering experience with Satchel's BBQ. We ordered catering for 50 people with a delivery to our business for a Staff Lunch. Not only was Hugh happy to provide a quote for our team, but he was very responsive, even offering to call me when I had an issue pop up why trying to pay. That level of personal customer care isn't mainstream these days, and the warmth from my interactions with this neighborhood business alone would bring me back to their restaurant. Our staff loved this meal. The green beans were my personal favorite just because they're so easy to get wrong, but when they're done right 🤌it's phenomenal. I even had one staff member say this was the best catered meal we've ever had, despite purchasing from some caterers that were quite a but more expensive. Lastly, it just pays to support a local business. When we decided to use Satchel's Hugh gave us a huge thank you message which warmed my heart. It makes such a difference in the lives of local business owners and I love that we were able to send them our business! You can't go wrong with anything on their menu but we loved the pulled pork, pulled chicken, corn bread, coleslaw and their homemade pickles. There was plenty to go around and a good amount leftover to send home with staff as well. I can't highly recommend Satchel's BBQ enough!

We have enjoyed many trips to Satchel's. It's always a tasty time. The meat is always smoked to mouth watering perfection. The variety of sides is great as we can change it up from time to time. I'm partial to the greens and green beans, but they're all very good. This year we tried the Thanksgiving smoked turkey. It was by far the best turkey I've ever had. We often do something other than turkey because it is usually bland. Now that we have tried Satchel's turkey we will be getting it again when we can!

Love Satchel's! We get takeout from here fairly often since it's nearby. The staff in there is always super friendly. Food solid every time. My favorite order is the chicken plate (the chicken is FANTASTIC, never dry and has great smoky flavor) with collard greens and the mac n cheese. Some of the best greens I've had, period. All their sides are good; I'm also partial to the potato salad. Cant go wrong with any of the other meats, either. I've also enjoyed the pulled pork and my partner usually gets the brisket. Their gumbo is also good when available!

I'm from Houston, TX, and Satchel's really scratches the BBQ itch!! Their food is so delicious and well-crafted. Satchel's has become my ultimate comfort food spot in Ann Arbor. The staff is also super friendly (properly southern friendly, if you as me!), which makes the whole experience a treat. Can't say enough good things about Satchel's. I highly recommend the half-pound meat plate with half brisket, half kielbasa, mac n' cheese, vinegar coleslaw (LOVE that they have a vinegar option!), and of course cornbread. Seriously to kill for

Went in on a Saturday afternoon, seating was nice, staff was friendly and quick with orders sub 5 min. I got the pulled pork plate for $15 and got the same portions as a combo plate. The pulled pork was very tasty with the different flavors of bbq sauce, especially the spicy bbq. I wasn't the biggest fan of the potato salad or cornbread but the Mac and cheese was good. Overall pretty good and would come again

Satchel is located on the north side of Washtenaw Avenue by the Verizon wireless store. Came here on a Friday evening for a carry out order note to self, if you're coming from the west, you're gonna wait a long time to turn left into the parking lot. But there was ample parking and my order was ready when I got there. There is a small area where you can dine in and there was a very extensive menu. I ordered ribs only, no sides. I got a full rack. Since these are meaty ribs, the ere was plenty for 2 plus some left over. They serve their ribs either with a dry rub, or wet. They were out of the dry rub, so I got the wet. There was a mild smoke flavor, and the liquid on the bottom of the carry out container was not spicy, had a slight vinegar taste. It came with 2 containers of bbq sauce. They were the same flavor. Prefer a sweet sauce, so we used our own when we got home. The ribs were tender the first night but got a little tough when I heated them up in the microwave the second night. I will admit I was a little surprised at the cost of the ribs. With a 10% tip you can see my bill came to $40. Now, it fed two people plus I had enough for a third meal, but I just wasn't expecting the bill to be quite so high for 1 rack of ribs and no sides. But I didn't check the menu online. I just ordered over the phone so that's on me.

Hands down the best BBQ in Michigan, don't believe me, go try it you won't be disappointed,, don't forget the collard greens, they are the best I've ever had . I can't leave out the staff, these guys treat you like family, very helpful with recommendations and just make you feel welcome from the first step in the door, I live over a half hour away but It's well worth the drive

As I was visiting Ann Arbor, I was looking for some BBQ. Satchel's had an overall 4 rating so I wanted to give it a try...plus they had sweet tea which is hard to find done right in the Midwest. The sweet tea would make any Southerner happy as it was very sweet, refreshing, and brewed in house. Turns out the owner or manager is from Alabama so he knows what to do. I went with the pulled pork and brisket combo that has cornbread and 2 sides come with it. Besides the sweet tea, the meats and cornbread were the best part of the meals. The pork and brisket were both tender and seasoned well. The cornbread was sweet and sticky. I picked potato salad and Mac and cheese for my sides. I didn't really enjoy either. They weren't bad but just meh. The potato salad was cut into cubes in a mustard base with onions and bell peppers. There are 5 sauces and I liked 3 of them. I enjoyed the mustard, vinegar, and sweet sauces. The original house and hot, I did not enjoy. The hot is substantial...I would rate it a 7 on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being weak and 10 being very hot. I would love to go to Satchel's again. The sweet tea, meats and 3 of the sauces are terrific. I would try different sides next time.

This place is awesome in every way. By far the best BBQ I've had in the area. The ribs are incredible, as are all of the sides. Service is always friendly and helpful. We've also had Satchel's provide catering for a grad party, and we got our smoked turkey from them for Thanksgiving. Top notch! Our guests couldn't stop talking about how great the find was, and the process was seamless. I can't say enough about this great local business.

I'm from Virginia Beach, and we used Satchel's for our company holiday party (tailgate style Christmas in October) and it was a massive hit!! Our team loved the food and the service from Hugh and his team was top notch, he delivered on the expectations and then some. He made sure we had everything we needed, plates, silverware, serving utensils and more.

One of the best BBQ places in metro Detroit hands down. Amazing sides like collards, gumbo and their delicious stew! My only complaint during this visit was that the brisket was exceptionally dry. For what they charge, they really should pay closer attention to the meat they're serving. It was pretty disappointing today.

4-18-2025 We picked up an order for 6 people with mixed meats, mac n cheese and green beans and cornbread. It was all delicious, smoky and full of flavor. We brought home a variety of their sauces, and it complimented the meal well. We'll be sure to return.

We ordered a smoked turkey for Thanksgiving. It was delicious, perfectly cooked and moist.

Satchel's BBQ seemed pretty promising when I first drove in and saw the smokers sitting at the entrance of the parking lot. They weren't operating at lunch time, but I figured that maybe they had smoked the meat in the morning? I went in and decided to get a small sandwich to try out the pork. The order took less than 5 minutes to come out: Pork Sandwich, Mac & Cheese ($9) - The pulled pork at Satchel's has a decent red smoke ring surrounding the interior meat and is served on a nice buttery toasted bun. The pork is soft but not as pull-apartable as I would expect of a great pulled pork. I wouldn't say it's especially dry, but it's certainly not moist either. There was a piece of bark included that was completely soft and limp, indicating that the pork was smoked previously then left to steam for serving. I did like how the pork is served without being pre-sauced - this allowed me a taste of the natural pork flavor before adding barbecue sauce later. The sauce is vinegary, peppery, and not too sweet. It's a required accompaniment for this pork; great pulled pork doesn't typically need sauce but this pork needed that addition to liven things up. The mac & cheese here is nice. It's super creamy and smooth with a unique taste, an almost mustard-like kick. The macaroni itself is cooked nicely and still has a bit of a bite. Strangely enough the mac & cheese was kind of lukewarm by the time it got to me. Satchel's BBQ is kind of emblematic of most Michigan BBQ in general - it's good enough if you have a fixing for barbecue, but isn't really anything special.

We ordered a whole smoked turkey for Thanksgiving. It was delicious- moist and perfectly smoked. Can't wait to make turkey soup from what's left. Five stars for sure!!!

We picked up to eat at home. The staff was friendl, the servings were great and the food was delicious as always .

My first time. I've been waiting to come here as long as they've been open, 13years. I was excited to try new meat. So, here it goes. This is an order at the counter kinda place. It's clear they cut costs with food being ready to go. And having a menu on the wall in large chalkboard print with cost and items easily to be updated. My buddy and I were the first customers of the day @11:01am. So dining room pics were plentiful. This place was clean and very well kept. The food was tasty and hot to the order. I ordered the ribs. Although "Not Fall Off The Bone" Still tender & tasty! Mac'n cheese was very hot and creamy. And the stew was spicy & hot as well. The only thing I wished they'd offer was hand wipes for customers. We had to got to the test room to wash our hands. I'll be back to try other meats.

It is BBQ season again and I was really itching to get beef brisket somewhere. Google told me there was a place nearby in Ann Arbor and I just happened to be in the area on this day. Stopped by Satchel's and was already impressed by the large chalkboard menu on the wall. One of the employees walked me through their selection of meats but I was sold on the brisket sandwich and asked for a side of red beans & rice. Sometimes you get brisket at certain places and the meat is thin and dry, but every single bite of my sandwich was moist and tender. The house bbq sauce and Carolina vinegar were full of flavor which only enhanced the brisket instead of taking away from it. I was also impressed by the red beans & rice which surprised me to tell you the truth. Definitely a top 5 BBQ restaurant in Michigan from the places I've eaten at.

Great BBQ Jen in Ann Arbor. Have dined in and ordered online to go (super simple) multiple times and the food never disappoints. All of the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Everything on the menu is good, in particular my favs are the pulled chicken and pork 10/10.

We recently ordered takeout for a small gathering. The ribs and pulled pork, in particular, were AMAZING! Highly recommend!

The food and service here is consistently excellent. Even little details like the employee checking our takeout bags to make sure all our sauces are included set Satchels apart. Highly recommend.

Regular customer here....most recently I had the smoked salmon plate with two sides (green beans and collard greens) plus yummy seasonal pumpkin bread pudding. Also tried the burnt end chili (so flavorful). Had delicious meals for two days! Satchel's is the best and I am very pleased with the quality and quantity of their meals at a reasonable price. Highly recommended!

Pretty darn tasty overall...potato salad and coleslaw were a tad bland IMO, but the meats were all very well done. All the cooked stuff could stand to be served a little hotter for sure (a consistent challenge with BBQ / smoked fare), but again, overall the best in the area that I've found so far for southern / soul food.

Satchel's BBQ is our "go-to" bbq spot in Ann Arbor. The restaurant is set up cafeteria style, so you may sit with others at your picnic table. It's a no frills spot with the best bbq around. I get the two meat two sides. I always get the chicken & pork, baked beans & Mac n cheese. He always gets the brisket & sausage, Mac n cheese & red beans & rice. Both served with cornbread. I get a sweet tea to finish off the deliciousness, sometimes a bread pudding to finish off the yummy meal. The food is served up quickly. This a great spot to hit if you are hungry, you don't have to wait long! The downtown location did close, but luckily we have this spot located on Washtenaw. Give Satchels a try, it's amazing bbq!

Hands down, that was the absolute best catering ever!! Your staff was well organised, cheerful, and polite. Pick up was effortless and on time. But the most important thing - the food was FABULOUS!

We got take out bbq pork with besns and rice, mac n cheese and collard greens and corn bread. The beef was tender and delish. The corn bread was a tad dry, but moistened up well in microwave. Mac n cheese was creamy and mild. Rice and beans were vegan and tasty. We didn't care for the collard greens, sort of sweet and sour flavor. We got 1/2 lb meal with 2 sides for 15.00. Good value for alot of food. We preordered on line ans they hot yhe order right and it was on time

Ordered some kielbasa and brisket on Labor Day. It was delicious. I appreciate that the are open on holidays because sometimes I just want to relax.

Before I jump into this, I want to state my BBQ opinion qualifications: lived in Texas for 5+ years (have eaten at several great institutions in BBQ often considered the top places in the whole country) and I did my undergrad in St. Louis, Missouri, home to Pappy's. Satchel's is good. It's consistent, affordable, high quality, and served with the friendliness and hospitality best associated with the humble but delightful barbecue joints across the country. We've only ever carried out from Satchel's but each time has been a great experience. Big fan of the kielbasa and the cornbread. Highly recommend supporting this local business! They are so kind and consistent. Bonus: bread pudding is delicious and exactly how bread pudding should be.

We had an order delivered recently and it was perfect! Food arrived within the time window given, a few minutes earlier than promised even. Everything we had was delicious. We ordered the family meal for 5-6, added some brisket to it, and it gave us slightly more than 5 adults could eat. The pork, chicken, collard greens, corn bread, baked beans, & cole slaw were all tasty! Their hot bbq sauce is actually HOT! The potato salad was different than I'm used to, and was a deliciously different take! Loved it. Lastly, my daughter has Celiac, and when I called to confirm items would be gluten free, the staff knew without hesitation, what their foods contain. What a breath of fresh air! The follow-up email from the owner was definitely a classy touch, too. Plan to be regulars here!

Did a huge order for a private party, and ordered within only a few days turnaround... it was amazing food and fast, kind service. Cannot recommend enough! Thank you to Hugh & Satchel's BBQ.

We got Satchel's to cater a party for 50 people. It was an easy process from start to finish, with great customer service/communication and great food that satisfied everyone's dietary needs at a very reasonable price. Would highly recommend!

I highly recommend Satchel's for catering. Their food is delicious -- great for kids and adults alike -- and very reasonably priced. The owner Hugh is responsive, professional, and honest. On relatively short notice, he arranged a complete catering order for us and gave me great advice on what to order and how much to order. The process was seemless and I would absolutely order again!

I highly recommend Satchel's BBQ for catering services. A few days before a big event, I needed to place a food order for about 28 people. Hugh (the owner) immediately responded to my request, and helped me order the perfect amount of food. -Communication: Hugh responded to my emails within the day, and was a great resource to discuss my food order with. I was unsure on some portions, but with his expertise, he helped me with some quantity changes that were perfect. -Payment: Payments can be completed online. Invoices will be emailed prior to make sure the food order is correct. It was very easy to do. -The food itself!! : The food was so delicious. There was no complaints from anybody in my group. Plus, the food all came warm too! We picked up the food, and didn't get to eating until 20min afterwards, and the food was still warm. -Portion size: We ordered enough for all 28 people, with enough for seconds for those who was interested. Their webpage about catering includes many details / tips for your group. This includes remembering to buy/pack plates, silverware, and even serving utensils. It helped me remember to pack them all - which I appreciated from just a planning standpoint. I'm very happy again with my order with Satchel's, and will most likely to call them again for my next event!

I have had a pulled pork sandwich, when they opened up, as I remember the sandwiches were similar, they are hamburger bun size, there was a good portion of pork, but not what you might think of a BBQ pork portion, in other restaurants. I ordered a meal, with baked beans , hearty with pulled pork, tasted like canned beans, maybe not, cost of over 10 bucks, I got the standard sauce, and hot sauce with habanero in it, the server said it was very hot, I sprinkled a few spots on it, more then a enough for me. The server offered water, I took a cup in ice. There were a few people ahead of me, the was short. The restaurant sets in back of phone store, small but nice for the location with their sign seeable by the road. I would give this a good average too better.

Introduced some friends to an experience of Southern comfort food recently. The beef brisket was tender with a deep smoky flavor and so was the baby back ribs with their yummy sides. While we waited for a fresh batch of crunchy green beansto be made, we were offered a cup of Coleslaw, nice and tangy, not too sweet. A variety of sauces is now served in small containers instead of having to squeeze the greasy plastic bottles, held by many finger licking fingers, a great improvement.

The meats were delicious. The sides were great too. I would recommend this place. The location is a little bit difficult to find. It is in the back of the Verizon business.

Great, dependable bbq: brisket and pulled chicken are my favs. Sides are just as excellent: mac and cheese, green beans, cole slaw, corn bread. Quick take out/online ordering too!

The food was obviously from the day before and "smothered" in BBQ sauce to hide the obvious over cooked meat. It was $15 for scraps. This place is way OVERRATED. Can you say "overrated?" Bob Wil

Came here last night for dinner. The food, customer service and environment was great! It was our first time there and they were very helpful. Will definitely stop by again when we're in town!

The brisket, pulled pork, chicken and ribs are all excellent. They don't pre-sauce any of their meat....because it doesn't need it. Now, if you want to throw a little spicy bbq (my favorite) on any of their meat for some zip then sure. Other smoke houses that serve the brisket, pulled pork or chicken with sauce already on it are a disgrace. Satchels is the best BBQ in AA thus far.
