Where to Eat in Bainbridge Island | Eater Seattle

"When a molecular gastronomist who worked at Canlis and Alinea opens a lunch spot, I find Sauce Nouvelle feels like a laboratory—an open kitchen with beakers on the counters and recipe formulas scrawled on the refrigerator—and it’s a place for the three S’s of lunch (soup, salad, and sandwiches); the standout is the playfully named Corn Relish Corn Beef, with mangosteen mango chutney, romaine, white cheddar, and sumac aioli on ciabatta." - Jay Friedman

Had a lovely dinner here, the plates were excellent and flavorful. I have to hand it to the chef, thats the first time ive had a steak I didnt immediately say, "I could've made this better at home" the only note is it looks like they reverse sear the steaks so everything is medium, I dont mind but I know thats not a lot of people's cup of tea I also had the pleasure of running into the owners partner Tate, if you dont know they're an all star pastry chef and the passion is reflected in the owner, the food, and the presentation I would highly recommend checking this place out for a special occasion dinner or if youre a die hard foodie like me As a heads up they're still in their soft opening phase and are still working out the kinks, im excited to what this place will bring in the future

I popped in here with friends for a late lunch, and wow! Fantastic sandwiches with serious flavor and high quality ingredients. One of the owners was working, a charming young man who obviously cares about what he’s putting out for customers. Highly recommend.

Best sandwich I’ve ever had! Wish they’d build another located in Wisconsin!! We typically do not like turkey but tried a bite of our friends sandwich and were blown away. They ordered the herb turkey blt. The turkey was very thinly sliced and the bread was fresh. So, so good. Definitely give this place a try!!

Look, the easiest way to say this is you must try this place. The geniuses behind the sandwiches, the flavors, and all the different pairings is simply an orgasm in your mouth. I say that because we originally were going to only have one sandwich, which was the pork belly sandwich and head down the street to try a different restaurant for fish and chips. After we had that first sandwich we were like yeah no we're staying here and getting a second sandwich so that we can try another burst of flavor. The individuals creating the sandwiches and taking our orders were the owners of the shop. Both people were super friendly, answered any questions that we had regarding the sandwiches, and we actually bonded over the fact that one of them was a California native. The shop itself is super chill and laid back. There is seating inside on countertops and there's even outdoor seating if you want to enjoy the Sun. I would suggest sitting inside because you get more of a chance to talk with the owner and his fabulous co-partner. Again, you must try this place it is so so so good

One of the co-owners, Brandon, checked in to make sure we were enjoying our food, which was excellent. He seemed to really care about the quality and that we liked what was served. After we started asking a couple questions he spent a good amount of time talking to my friend and me about the science of the food they make here and it was so interesting. They really care about the quality, about the taste, the consistency, and the health benefits of what they serve. They have seasonal items as well, and everything is fresh. Brandon and Erik took hospitality to a new level, even providing samples of some new things they are working on and providing insight about the ins and outs of running a small business on Bainbridge. It sounds like they are moving to Fremont (in Seattle) in the spring which is closer to where I live, and I look forward to having a sandwich place I love nearby and frequenting them often. I’ve been looking for good sandwich places in Seattle and I’m so happy to have found one that’s accessible to me.

Fantastic soft bread with a good crust on the Ciabatta went well with the slightly spiced peach sauce. 100% recommend.

Google
I keep thinking about the sandwich I had yesterday, it was that good! I got the veggie and was expecting a nice but typical veggie sandwich (here it is also labeled vegan, although I’m not a serious vegan so didn’t fully inquire). Instead, it was sophisticated and unpretentious and totally craveable. And filling! Recommend.

Google
Sauce Nouvelle was an okay lunch for us on a busy Sunday afternoon. The actual space for the restaurant is small but there's plenty of seating in the larger structure the restaurant is in. We were able to walk in and order very quickly which was great. Unfortunately, our sandwiches were only decent at best - with both being overwhelmingly wet and falling apart. I don't think they sat for very long so I can only assume a construction/preparation issue. Flavors were fine I guess, but the textures were not appealing. Wouldn't come back unless I heard positive reviews from personal friends.

Yelp
I want to Sauce Novelle on Sunday. My daughter has celiacs and the restaurant was so great in ensuring her meal got made properly. My sandwich the Peach Roasted Spiced Chicken was awesome!

Yelp
Stop. Just stop what you're doing, put it away for later, and go get a sandwich here, because whatever you're doing isn't nearly as important as trying this place. Proof? The Corn Relish Corn Beef (pictured below). Whoever created this had the perfect idea of what a corned beef sandwich should be (again, see the proof). I normally don't like being punched in the mouth, but when with flavor this good, I'll take it any day. And a huge shoutout to Brandon who asked if he was pronouncing my name right, so he'd "make sure it was correct for next time." Thanks, my dude!

Yelp
another level Sammy shop. What a spectacular array of ingredients used. It's flavors and combined condiments work.

Yelp
Second time coming here, got the Balloon Flower Roasted Pork Sandwich and we were really impressed. The bread is just to die for, the aioli was delicious and there was the perfect amount on it, the plums were great for flavor balance. Definitely will be back again!

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches and coleslaw. Fresh, flavorful. The breads are perfect. Must try.

Yelp
What a lovely spot! I was craving sandwiches while walking around so stopped by. They have QR code ordering which is super convenient; no need to wait in line. I ordered the peach chicken sandwich which took ~15 minutes. I sat outside in the shared courtyard. The space is kept pretty clean which was nice. The sandwich itself was super flavorful. The menu pictures do not do them justice. It was juicy, the bread was hot and toasted, I loved it. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough slaw/veggies to break up the richness. Overall, I really liked this place! I would come back to try their other sandwiches, they all sound so interesting and delicious. But more slaw pls!
google avatar

Yelp
the herb turkey blt and the sandwich with pork and thai plum sauce (i don't remember the name of it) were insanely delicious! the bread they come on is so fresh, and the guy that was working was very nice and made sure to check that we enjoyed our food. the seating area is very peaceful too. 10/10 will be back here whenever i'm on bainbridge island!

Yelp
We had lunch here on our trip to Bainbridge Island. I tried the short rib sandwich and my friend had the pork. The bread was phenomenal and the sandwich was very saucey which I liked a lot. I'm unsure about the case of the pork sandwich, but as far as the short rib went I thought the pieces were extremely thin and there was a hint of sweetness that didn't balance out the sandwich very well. Considering the options on the island I would say this is a good fast food choice, but for a more sit down experience there were a lot of other places that may be worth a try.

Yelp
Sandwiches here are excellent and perfect for a picnic in Bainbridge. It's a small little spot (so only takeout) but there's seating in the little plaza area. Service is really friendly and they make the sandwiches fairly quick. I got their chicken sandwich with a peach bbq sauce and mixed greens. It was delicious and one of the highlights of our Bainbridge picnic day! Our sandwich came with a small side of coleslaw which was also very tasty! Highly recommend this spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered a chicken sandwich and they gave me something that looked totally different and pretended they didn't... Reply to owner's comments: hi, then why don't you say that on the menu. Also the picture on the iPad (part of the behavioral science experiment?) is totally different from the actual sandwich...why? Lastly, around 2 billion people don't eat pork. I do but the entire time I was still thinking that the chicken sandwich was pork. Is that the experience you want to give to a quarter of all humans?

Yelp
This place never disappoints! The food is incredible, the service is top-notch, and the sandwiches are out of this world!

Yelp
I had a beef with cherry sauce sandwich and a chocolate caramel cookie and both were delicious. The place your own order station was confusing to some older patrons who blocked the screens for 3-5 minutes but weren't actually ordering, it created a line of about 5 people. The shop is hot, kudos to the guys working in there, they were moving fast and getting things out as quickly as they could and it was sweltering hot & humid in there.

Yelp
I'm so glad I stopped here on my recent Bainbridge trip, their sandwiches were some of the best I've ever had! My boyfriend and I got the vegetarian sandwich and the peach spiced chicken sandwich to share. It took around 10 minutes to get them. They have few tables outside, where we sat while devouring our sandwiches. The bread was warm and fresh. Both sauces were so flavorful. The chicken sandwich had a good hint of cinnamon! I will definitely be back next time I'm on the island!

Yelp
$60 for two sub-par sandwiches, drinks and chips. I really wanted to love this place, as Bainbridge is short on good sandwiches. I love creative recipes but they need to taste good, not just be 'extra' for no reason. This is the Yoko Ono of sandwich joints.
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
If you love sandwiches this is a must try spot for you! The flavors are so well thought out and the bread adds a nice texture to the filling. Staff promptly worked on our orders after we checked out on the self serve kiosk and brought it to our table when it was ready. We enjoyed our meal outside on one of the outdoor tables, it was a perfect lunch vibe.

Yelp
We stopped in here for a little bit of lunch. The menu is quite limited. I don't eat gluten or dairy and when I realized that there was only one item on the menu I could eat (with a modification) I wasn't so sure how I would like it. The gentleman behind the counter (biochem major?) was very personable and attentive. The food was prepared very quickly. Seating is also quite limited and I imagine they do mostly take out. Anyway as it turns out the Kale salad with white beans and bearberry dressing was excellent. My friend ordered the onion soup which seemed a little oily but she enjoyed it. My other friend ordered a sandwich and she enjoyed that. Definitely recommend this spot for a delicious quick bite.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches I've had in years! Had a new offering kiwi pesto pork sandwich on an amazing bread. Would definitely come back here again!

Yelp
OMG! What a fantastic sandwich! I had heard of Sauce Nouvelle from friends here on the island, and also took the time to scroll through the Yelp reviews before venturing out. Rarely have I seen a place with reviews that are nearly uniformly perfect, with an average score of 5 stars. After trying the place, I agree that the place deserves every single star. In fact, I wish I could have given it another. If you're on the Island and you have a hankering for a sandwich (even if, as another reviewer had noted, you don't even like sandwiches), this is your place. Really. Don't even consider going anywhere else. Sauce Nouvelle has a limited menu, but I don't find that that's a bad thing. It means even more time is spent on the menu at hand. After talking to the owner, Nicholas, about the menu, he noted that it does rotate somewhat, depending on the availability of fresh ingredients. All the better. I ordered the Peach Roasted Spiced Chicken. It was served on a lightly toasted bolo roll, with a side of house made slaw. The chicken was pulled, and mixed well with the sauce. The first bite filled my mouth with flavor, as it seemed to melt against my tongue. It was an incredible experience, and amazingly delicious. Each bite I savored as much as the first. Nicholas mentioned he was working on his next sauce, tea-based for chicken. He gave me a taste. It was delicious! I wanted to order that, but he indicated it wouldn't be available for a couple of more weeks. You know where you'll find me when that recipe makes its way to the menu! Sauce Nouvelle is a tiny little place set back from the street. It's small, but friendly. There is not much room to sit inside, but on days with fairer weather, there's ample seating outside. Otherwise, consider getting the food to go. Run, don't walk, to Sauce Nouvelle! Some of the best food on the Island. And, frankly, home of one of the best sandwiches I have ever sunk my teeth into.

Yelp
Because of the ferry two hour backup in Edmonds, I ended up crossing the sound via Seattle to Bainbridge Island instead. I wanted to try something different for my first meal of the day. Thankfully, the helpful Yelp app came up with Sauce Nouvelle (9/13/23). I showed up shortly after opening and received a friendly, upbeat greeting. After glancing at the menu, I couldn't decide between the Mint Proscuitto sandwich or the Corn Relish Corned Beef sandwich ($16); with tax & tip around $20. The counter person highly recommended the latter, so I went with that. I appreciated that the takeout packaging, fork, and napkins were all compostable. There's onsite counter seating, but I chose to sit in the shared courtyard area. I enjoyed the freshness, unique flavor and texture, sure woke up my palate! Tender, succulent corned beef with mangosteen mango chutney, romaine, white cheddar, sumac aioli on a ciabatta roll. Very generous sandwich and corn relish slaw side. This isn't a generic deli style sandwich shop. There's also some salads, daily soup selection, cookies, and even espresso on the menu. This review is brought to you by the letter F, for Freshness and Flavor! Great find, thanks fellow Yelpers!

Yelp
Wow! My vegan sandwich of the day was so delicious! If Sauce Nouvelle was open later I seriously would have come back and ordered it again!! I have a severe dairy allergy and it is very difficult for me to eat out. Nicholas made me feel very comfortable that he would ensure no cross-contamination. My friend had the corn relish corn beef sandwich and she loved hers as well. Thank you, Nicholas, for such a wonderful meal!

Brandy L.

Yelp
Hey, maybe making your employees work in an enclosed building without air conditioning during a heat wave isn't the best idea. If it's 85 degrees outside can you imagine how hot it is inside by the grills?? We couldn't stay inside for more than 3 minutes without sweating. Be nice to your employees. I should not see sweat dripping down them. Costco sells an air conditioner for $300.

Keri S.

Yelp
12/10. Peach chicken was amazing and they turn into a bagel shop in the mornings. Must visit!

Yelp
A Cherry-on-Top Sandwich Dream at Sauce Nouvelle! Bainbridge Island, WA If you find yourself on Bainbridge Island and don't go to Sauce Nouvelle, I'm genuinely concerned for your taste buds. This little sandwich sanctuary is crafting gourmet handheld miracles--and the Rainier Cherry Ribeye Beef sandwich? Oh. My. Flavor. Let's break it down: Tender, juicy ribeye (like, close-your-eyes-and-moan good) paired with the subtle sweet zing of Rainier cherries, as if your sandwich took a scenic ferry ride through flavor country. Add in garlic aioli that slaps in the best possible way, pickled red onions with just enough sass, and a handful of peppery arugula for balance--and you've got a love letter to your mouth. Oh, and it's all hugged lovingly by a perfectly crusty-on-the-outside, pillowy-on-the-inside ciabatta roll. This isn't a sandwich. It's an edible mic drop. The staff? Chill and charming, like if Wes Anderson directed a deli. The vibe? Rustic meets artsy with just enough quirk to feel cool without trying too hard. Final verdict? 11/10. Would swim to Bainbridge if the ferry broke down. This sandwich deserves its own lighthouse. Go. Order the Rainier Cherry Ribeye. Tell them your taste buds sent you.

Yelp
A small restaurant with big flavorful sandwiches. It's located at the back of a two story mall on Main Street across the street from the Town and Country grocery store. Seating is outdoors in the mall with additional seating a little south a few doors down. it's a limited selection of sandwiches and salads that changes seasonally. All of them are flavorful and delicious!! I enjoyed the Smoked Guava Salmon sandwich, it was a beautiful filet of salmon, cooked perfectly. The staff were friendly and helpful. You order at a kiosk and have a short wait, sandwiches come with your choice of fries or coleslaw. They offered two salads, a Watermelon Arugula salad or a Pear Cauliflower Salad. Enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
This is hands down THE BEST SANDWICH IVE EVER HAD EVERY TIME! I drive an hour for these sandwiches often , with no complaints , it HITS consistently. They arebringing elevated and technical flavors to the humble sandwich! As a picky eater, I've tried most everything on the menu and have never been let down or taken ANYTHING off . This is my spot , thank you to the staff that make it possible! Peace
google avatar

Rose Y.

Yelp
Thanks Yelpers as you gave a great recommendation; I'm joining the chorus of praise. They have a very limited menu and they had run out of 2 sandwiches. Nevertheless, the corned beef sandwich, veggie sandwich, soup and salad were perfection! I don't even like sandwiches. Plus the owner was really nice guy. Order online to save time. There was 4 or so bar seats. Enjoy! I'll be back.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
It's so good!! Got the spiced peach chicken sandwich. Freaking delicious. The slaw was also notably delicious, best I've ever had. And the grilled cheese! With havarti and Beechers- what an upgrade! My kids loved it. My baby loved it. I loved it. We all loved it. 10/10, run don't walk.

Yelp
This was delicious! 8/10 for taste. 7/10 ambiance and smells fantastic! Friendly and accommodating staff. Quick service. Reasonable prices. Great lunch spot!

Yelp
Super nice people, cute, space, healthy, delicious, and quickly rich, prepared foods, and beverages, really made our day better! Especially liked the thinly sliced cauliflower and coleslaw. Amazing!

Greg D.

Yelp
Had the peach roasted spiced chicken sandwich on my first visit and it was fantastic. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
Both were amazingly delicious! Very creative use of ingredients and little touches (perfectly warm bread) make the meal something to come back for, over and over again Topped off with friendly smiles and great service from the chefs!

Yelp
On a warm summer day, the Watermelon Arugula salad was perfect. Nestled away just off the main strip, there was plenty of seating. Highly recommended!

Chloe S.

Yelp
This review is long overdue. Every time we eat here, whether we order a sandwich or salad, we are freshly reminded of how uniquely delicious (and consistently so) everything here is. The flavor profiles are like nothing we've had elsewhere and it's just always, always, always so good. The chef/owner & staff are also so nice and clearly passionate about quality food. Great option to go & also for a quick lunch if you plan to eat in (very casual). The menu rotates seasonally fyi and we have always enjoyed everything we've ordered.

S B.

Yelp
We found this incredible spot because of the great yelp reviews and I'm so grateful! Flavorful sandwiches, delicious cookies, and a great experience over all. We took the ferry to Bainbridge island and stopped in to eat. The food here is incredible. The service was unbeatable as well - very friendly chef/owner who informed us about different menu items, and even gave us a small sample before we ordered. This place was so good that we've been thinking of ways we can squeeze it into our itinerary again before we fly back. 10/10 would recommend.

S S.

Yelp
The best food and restaurant on the Island (actually, some of the best I've ever had), in my opinion, and the owners Nicholas and Brandon are such wonderful, kind, and genuine people. They also have always had the best customer service. Love this place!
google avatar

Rose G.

Yelp
Had an incredible spicy peach chicken amazing sandwich. You gotta try one for sure! Amazing flavors with an excellent bun.
google avatar

Taylor D.

Yelp
The staff was very friendly and able to answer all of my questions. While it isn't on the menu, they offer a gluten free bread for their sandwiches. They do prepare it using the same utensils and space, which they were upfront about.
google avatar

J L.

Yelp
Strange name- to be clear, this is sandwich shop. They also have a small coffee menu. Very good, not perfect. They were very behind when I came (hadn't prepped enough before opening) and had a few things unavailable. Everything I had was delicious and fresh. Nice atmosphere and lovely staff. Wish I could give 4.5 stars.
google avatar

Helen W.

Yelp
This restaurant is a great addition to the town of Winslow. They have sandwiches, salads, and soups. Great variety of options with a creative menu that lives up to them putting 'sauce' in their name.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
The best sandwich I have ever eaten! My husband's sandwich was also amazing but, he only let me have one bite; It's that good. Go eat here.

Caitlyn G.

Yelp
My family and I visited Bainbridge Island yesterday. After a day of exploring, we were looking for a spot for lunch. Everywhere was packed when we stumbled into Sauce Nouvelle. The menu was a little different from what my family normally gravitates towards, but we were so hungry, we decided to give it a chance. We all agree that this place has some of the best sandwiches we have ever had. The flavor combination was unreal! I had the braised beef sandwich. The meat was very tender and full of so much flavor! My brother had the pork tenderloin sandwich and his only complaint was he ate it too fast and wanted more. My husband tried the roasted chicken and licked his plate clean. If you have the opportunity to visit this hidden gem, we all 10/10 recommend! One of the best meals ever!

Callum G.

Yelp
This place was amazing . I got a grilled cheese sandwich and it was perfect. It had 2 cheese and was drippy and was freshly made, like I watched him make it. The bread was on point and tasted amazing. I also got a cookie which tasted great. I would recommend you go here if you are in the area.

Urvi T.

Yelp
Some of the best sandwiches I have ever had!! The peach sandwich description is misleading!!! Definitely try it

Jim N.

Yelp
Wow. Amazing sandwiches! Our first stop off the ferry definitely did not disappoint. Had the Apple Tarragon Lamb and Beef sandwich - great flavor and perfect portion. The soup was excellent. Grab some of the freshly baked cookies too!

Lynn W.

Yelp
Visited Bainbridge island with my daughter and picked up the corn beef sandwich from Sauce Nouvelle. It was amazing! Delicious and so unique. All the flavors went together and the slaw salad went nicely with it. We will be back!

Hobbes D.

Yelp
Tucked in the back corner of an open air mall in the heart of Winslow, this is a gem of a sandwich shop Bainbridge has needed for a long time. Had the Crabapple Chicken Sandwich and a chocolate chip cookie. The sandwich bread was excellent with a light crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Chicken melted in your mouth. The crabapple slaw was appropriately tart but full of flavor other than tartness. It was good both on the sandwich and as a side accompanying the sandwich. The mayo was the right amount mixed with some excellent mild spices. Great sandwich! The cookie was to die for. But I admit that I have a weakness for a good chocolate chip cookie. Soft center. Light crisp outside, and loaded with excellent chocolate with a touch of sea salt on top. Couple of small counter tables inside with more tables outside. It's kinda like eating in the chef's kitchen. Do yourself a favor and grab food here while on Bainbridge. My only disappointment is that now that tourist season is over, Nicolas needs more business. Want him to survive the Bainbridge winter.

Michelle ..

Yelp
Every sandwich I've tried is delicious! I like that the menu rotates. Cookies rock too.
