Yelp
The food at Saucy Bombay was WAY too expensive compared to similar restaurants in their category, in my opinion. Plus, it wasn't good. I was teetering between 1 and 2 stars. It pains me to give one star, plus the service was good and the space is clean and light-filled. Two stars it is.
My husband and I stopped at SB for lunch 2 days ago before a movie at the SIE. We shared one plate with 2 entrees and also had a naan. Our total bill came to $15.38 (no drinks).
#1 - This is a fast casual concept. We LOVE fast casual food! That's a plus. Go through the line and select from 6 "proteins", 6 sauces and condiments. Pick one protein and it's a bowl, two and it's a plate. We are frequent fast casual diners and found that the portion was a little less than what we would have received at Garbanzo, much less than Chipotle. $15.38 is nearly twice the price for what I would have expected. Yes, it's expensive real estate. Chipotle is a block away on the same street. Roughly $8 would be about right. If it was $9, I would have given 3 stars.
#2 - Hefty upcharges on MANY items. As you're going through the line, there are signs along the food - no mention of upcharges on those signs. Buyer beware - you must look at the large menu to see what has an upcharge. Beef and lamb are each $1.50 more - that seems quite high given that it's a pretty small scoop of protein to start.
#3 - All sauces are vegan. Great for vegan customers! I want butter and cream in my Indian sauces. The cashier asked if we wanted a fork or a spoon to eat our meal. We thought that was an odd question. A fork, of course! When we sat down and realized how thin and watery both sauces were, we understood. In addition to being too weak for the naan or the rice, each had very little flavor. I only noticed the note about the vegan sauces on the large menu after we began to eat.
If you go here, take a few moments to look at the large hanging menu. If I had, I probably would not have stayed.
