"Alas, the previously reported Assembly Row expansion of Sav-Mor Liquors actually means the closure of its longtime McGrath Highway location — and the death of McGrath Highway’s favorite letter board sign that at times has feuded with and at times flirted with the McDonald’s sign across the way. (The small discount liquor chain also posts funny signage at its Medford location.) The location at 15 McGrath Hwy., Somerville, is now closed, and today, January 10, is opening day for the new spot at 325 Canal St., Somerville, within the Assembly Row development." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

"A few years back, watching the Sav-Mor Liquors letter board sign in Somerville go to battle with the McDonald’s sign across the street was one of life’s small pleasures for those passing by the Somerville location of the discount liquor store on McGrath Highway. Sav-Mor’s Somerville and Medford locations have both been having fun with their signs for years, changing them up for holidays or current events or just about anything. (“Now octopus free,” Sav-Mor Somerville once declared.) The small local chain, which also includes Sav-Mor Spirits in Cambridge and Locke Liquors in Malden, dates back to 1961. It’s expanding within Somerville in the coming months, opening soon at the ever-growing Assembly Row development. A rep says that there has been some discussion of signage at the new location; while nothing has been finalized yet, it’s likely customers will “see something to continue the tradition in some way.”" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

I love supporting small local businesses in my neighborhood, but the upcharge on items here is getting a bit nuts. $24 for an 8 pack of Guinness cans (same item found at Wegmans for $14)?? Will be stocking up for St. Paddy's elsewhere. Edit: maybe Wegmans was a bad example. Kappys sells this same product for $17.99 and they don't sell groceries.

I wine to buy a bottle of wine and got one which had a tag of $11 but it was actually priced $18 so the guy and the lady at the counter said I have to pay $18, to which I said that will look for a budget wine and went to check for another wine. The lady at the counter started to tell the guy that I have changed the price tag, please check the CCTV. I walked out in humiliation. Never going to go back nor will recommend in my life, there are other stores also.

Decent prices, but appears to be run by a bunch of racist meth addicts (think rotten teeth, white trash, looking way older than they really are). The cashier was very rude to my dark skinned girlfriend, even though I buy from here often. I'm never shopping here again. Anyone who is progressive and dislikes racism should avoid this store. Also, the hours are too limited.

Called to find out of they had a specific type of drink, dude said he was too buy and hung up on me. Mind you, there were 2 other people working there just standing around. Bought what I called about (not the flavor I wanted) and it was almost $3 more than other places. Same guy that answered the phone was mad rude and standoffish at the rgister. Oh well. Not going back.

Google
Mmmm this place has been a great place for years. It saddened me to see my favorite burnett's limeade no longer on the shelf, but they have variety so it's all good. Not too expensive either.

Yelp
I had to share my bad evening experince. Have been living in Medford for over 5 years but never had been treated so bad. I went to buy a bottle of wine from Sav Mor liquors and got one which had a tag of $11 but it was actually priced $18 so the guy and the lady at the counter said I have to pay $18, to which I said that will look for a budget wine and went to check for another wine. The lady at the counter started to tell the guy that I have changed the price tag, please check the CCTV. I walked out in humiliation. Never going to go back nor will recommend in my life, there are other stores also.

Yelp
Worst store ever !! They try to steal us we bought two bottles and they charged us with a higher price and after they didn't want to refund us. We almost had to call the cops! The store is really dirty and the prices are so expensive. You should really avoid this place. The cashier are really mean and agressive.

Yelp
I went here New years eve. On my way home. For $12 bottle of wine ended up with #122.50, and $1820.00 on my credit card. DO NOT GO HERE. Got my credit card company to drop it, but how sleazy is this place? Ugh . Looks sleazy too

Yelp
You really do save more at Sav Mor Liquors. They leave off the E's for savings. Either that or they can't spell for sh*t. It may look slightly sketch from the outside but don't be skurred. I have to admit I was a little afraid of this place for a while but I finally decided to stop being such a pansy and check it out. I was pleasantly surprised. Pretty cool that there is a Whole Foods right next door. Good location, good prices, good selection. Sav Mor Discount Liquors, you're okay in my book.

Yelp
I love this place. The staff here is awesome - everyone is pretty friendly and make delightful suggestions. My favorite part of Sav-Mor Liquors are the descriptions of all the beers with the little ratings. I really like beer and would like to try a variety of beer - but I'd like to know what I'm getting myself into before I buy a six pack. These ratings have yet to steer me to a bad place and for this, I am grateful. Yay beer!

Yelp
WINE FOR MOTHERS DAY BECAUSE YOU DROVE HER TO DRINK Signs like these give me a chuckle when I'm pulling in to Whole Foods. Once in a while I'll walk over the Sav-Mor and I have to say that I'm usually pretty pleased walking out. Nothing mind-blowing but a good selection. I recall they had a lot of South American wines back when I had a hard time finding things like Cono Sur at bigger stores.

Yelp
I think this place is great. - The prices are really good for west medford. - They help me carry stuff out to the car. - They have a nice selection of argentinian reds and pilsners.

Yelp
Great little liquor store nearby my house (and conveniently located next to the Whole Foods). Had to pick up the last minute thanksgiving booze/food today and this was the perfect place. Good beer and wine selection. They had all the random beers I like (lots of harpoon, micro-brews, and all the standards). Picked up some Dead Guy Ale, Harpoon, and Coors Light (for my dad - not me!) Also grabbed some nice pinot noirs, and a few Rieslings. I was pleasantly surprised by the selection. Staff was friendly and so helpful - the guy carried the box to my car (he offered - I didn't even ask) LOVE LOVE LOVE THAT! (It was heavy!) I'll be back!

Yelp
Went in with a positive attitude despite the rain. I found a brand of beer I've been looking for and was very excited. I went up to pay and greeted the cashier with a smile, expressing my excitement about them carrying this brand. The cashier ignored my comment and immediately questioned me and my two friends about our age. Without barely looking at our government issued REAL IDs, he asked us for our college IDs and proceeded to verify our ages. I was not bothered by him doing this, as this is normal for people our age. I was upset that he expressed no interest in responding to my comment and did not have a friendly customer service attitude. Definitely will be taking my business elsewhere.

Yelp
When they have the goods in stock, AWESOME. When they are out, they are pretty good about telling you when they ordered it/should be getting it in and trying to help me track it down elsewhere. The selection is small, but good. The staff is super friendly. The pricing is about average. The store is clean and well laid out. Location is pretty nice too.

Marty S.

Yelp
Do not order delivery on Drizly from here. Your Ofer will be wildly late at best. It may not show at all.

Scott D.

Yelp
Oh Sav Mor, how i love thee...mostly. It's like most liquor stores i've been in. Full to the brim with liquor, a pretty good selection i might add. Also, reasonable prices, i never feel cheat here. But maybe it's the gorgeous decor of the joint that lends it that air of cheapness.... The staff are nice a good portion of time, i never had bad situations, only really friendly or neutral get in get out transactions. I like the woman who plays Sudoku right up to the point when she has to swipe your card, then goes back to it, haha! There's also a cute dog putzing around the joint, most likely to help sniff out the good beer deals. OH! and i love love love their slogans: Stay hydrated, Drink More; Holidays mean family, We sell booze and many more!

Kara S.

Yelp
Pro: they sell booze here! Con: everything feels pretty grimy. But really, what do you care? If you want to feel classy go next door and drop twenty bucks on gluten-free organic snacks at Whole Foods. Or come here and grab a sixer and a bag of Andy's Hot Fries for half that. (Sad nutritiously devoid) dinner is served.

Ksenia K.

Yelp
Had wine delivered from this store for a friend, they have a great selection of wine and prices are very reasonable. Thank you so much for the surprise delivery for my friend's birthday. We'll definitely be returning customers and order again soon.

Anthony R.

Yelp
Sav-Mor liquors: they omit the E's from their sign and PASS THE SAVINGS ON TO YOU! Unfortunately, I think that doesn't mean very much savings, since prices aren't particularly low - but they're not overpriced, either. I only come here when I'm also shopping at Whole Foods next door and wouldn't make the trip otherwise.

Emily S.

Yelp
Seedy Exterior: Check Quirky Signage: Check Cheap Booze: Check Proximity to Snackies: Check What more could you want in a liquor store??? I was a little iffy about going in here the first time due to its slightly sketchy exterior but the interior is slightly less sketchy. I'd like to take a moment to emphasize the "slightly" part of that sentence. It's a tad on the dirty, gritty side but as long as the stuff inside the bottles is fine than whatevs. The service is slightly mixed but for the most part it's good. There are a few guys that will offer to help you out and the ladies behind the counter are nice with the exception of one or two cranky ones. The prices are good, being slightly cheaper than Hillside nearby. The wine and beer selections are pretty nice and they have all your usual liquor. If you're looking for something special or unusual though, you will have to go elsewhere. One of the best parts about Sav-Mors in Medford is that it's right next to Whole Foods! Super convenient location.

Yelp
This place has a great sale section and they're pretty nice to you when you are there in person however their customer service over the phone is severely lacking. I called in to see if they had Harpoon's Big Squeeze beer in stock. The lady on the phone told me that they carried Harpoon beers but wasn't sure if they had that particular one. When I asked if she could check she said all their employees were busy helping customers. Is she not an employee?

Alana L.

Yelp
So the outside's a little dirty, and the inside's a little dingy. Don't let that fool you - they have a nice selection, particularly of craft and local brews, and the prices aren't too bad, especially for the area. The staff are all knowledgeable and helpful - if they have something in, they'll tell you about it, and if not, they'll let you know if they'll have it in soon and recommend something similar if you ask. Their liquor selection is also pretty solid, and they have some interesting local stuff along the back wall. If you have a lot to carry, they'll either help you carry it to your car or give you a few boxes to make it easier. Make doubly sure you have your ID on you - they will ID you if you look under 40, every time. (I'm 21 and they squint to make sure it's me.) I tried with an old licence once, having had both old and new in my wallet, and they spotted it. It's a great place to pick up a sixer of something good after going shopping at Whole Foods.

Monica A.

Yelp
Considering the fact that I have worked in the alcohol business, I know the protocol for carding patrons and that was not it... You were not there so you have no idea what went really down. Thanks for your timely response but also no thanks...there is a friendlier store down the street anyway.

Sam S.

Yelp
REALLY overpriced beer. Also, the place smelled like four kinds of mildew.

Melissa M.

Yelp
Cramped and dirty and cheap. I will go here for my wine. They even sell Polar Seltzer. WIN.

Obi ..

Yelp
Minus one star for the lack of frills, but who needs 'em at a liquor store, really? Surprisingly good selection, a not overly curmudgeonly staff, and pretty decent prices (be wary of the occasional $12 six pack) makes this place worth the stop. Additionally, if you have a hankering for a four dollar cucumber, there's a Whole Foods right next door.

Beck N.

Yelp
This place is alright...beer is relatively cheap, though you have to go through the cooler to find exactly what you're looking for. It also seems like it is constantly under construction...

Pickles M.

Yelp
DO NOT BUY BEER HERE. i have NEVER gotten cold beer from this place. Their cooler is kept at a brisk 52 degrees, leaving all their beer over temperature and eventually skunked.. EVERY..... SINGLE...TIME. They don't care. if you like slightly below room temperature beer, then by all means, go here. Wine and liquor is ok. average price

Al H.

Yelp
rude cashier and way over priced. Go to Bargain Spot in West Medford Sq. Better prices etc...
