The 18 Best Cambridge Restaurants | Eater London

"This is a true Cambridge institution. In some ways, it’s the polar opposite of Dom’s Coffee, the other espresso provider to grace this guide, but both are squarely in the business of quality and hospitality. Plastered with old Italian newspapers and film photos, and sometimes showing Serie A on the TV, the cafe offers espresso oily and rich, with a panino or a slice of torta caprese that crumbles like the resolve of the diner seated in front of it. Darker brown and served in a bigger cup, the impossibly thick Italian-style hot chocolate doesn’t coat the back of a spoon so much as smother it." - James Hansen

It’s was our first time visiting Cambridge together and we absolutely loved it — part of the reason was the breakfast experience here at Savino’s. Here’s a photo of us having coming back for quick morning coffee on my wife’s birthday. Beautiful people, beautiful experience. Can’t wait to be back.

No food but very good flat whites, served by a beautiful young lady and understood what we wanted. Excellent temperature excellent flat whites - thank you

Happened upon Savinos by accident on the way back to the bus station. What a happy find. We had the most excellent salads, bursting with mediterranean flavours. Just what we needed on a hot summers day. Service was fantastic, welcoming, friendly, and efficient. Will definitely be back.

The food was so lovely in this warm family business, fresh and tasty products made it great value for money. Service was excellent as well, both the front of house and his father, the chef, were so friendly. Highly recommend!!

Google
Amazing food! Priced highly but worth it. Everything is served piping hot and seems very authentic; the staff are all Italian. Coffee tastes really good and the food (paninis and salads) is delicious. There are both vegetarian and meat options. Presented beautifully. Staff very friendly and accommodating.

Google
Amazing pastry! crispy shell with a warm chocolate filling. Also love the smell of baked goods that wafts in the space. — Coming back before catching a bus. Tried the new breakfast special, omelette panino. Lovely freshly cooked omelette, filled with flavorful peppers and chicken pieces, stuffed in piping hot toasted ciabatta. Heavenly heart-warming and filling breakfast. Very welcoming and efficient service. The blackboard always tempts me with so many combinations… and Brie/cheddar/mozzarella cheese croissant sounds delicious.

Great coffee. Prompt service. Excellent food. Had bacon & scrambled eggs lightly done just as I like it! Open from 7am - early for Cambridge Cafés

Google
Our absolute favourite place in Cambridge for coffee and croissants. Their chocolate croissants are absolutely amazing - especially when they are fresh out of the oven. Sometimes we plan a trip to Cambridge because we’re craving the croissants so much. We never visit Cambridge without a trip to Savino’s! Really friendly staff and great service.

Yelp
Ordered a caffè latte and the breakfast sandwich special. Latte was very nice. Smooth and nice coffee flavor. Tasty. The breakfast sandwich was a omelette panino with chicken, cheese, chili and mixed greens. It was quite good. Nice portion size, fluffy eggs and a little kick from the chilis. Staff was efficient and friendly. I'll definitely come back here next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Terrible manager .. kicked me out of store because I got 'takeaway' and while waiting for my uber ride, I started eating in the restaurant which had plenty of open seats.

Yelp
Coffee, panini, and service are all above average here at Savino's. Wouldn't hesitate to stop by any time I'm in the area for lunch or a coffee.

Yelp
I've always loved studying in cafes, and the ones in Cambridge have just been crap. Usually too small, too over-priced, or too crowded. Savino's is an authentic (or as authentic you can get in Cambridge, at least) little Italian cafe. It opens late until 8pm on most days, which is nice considering everything shuts down by 5/6 around town except fancy restaurants. Prices are the same as other cafes. Cheaper than Nero or Starbucks though. Good coffee and cappuccinos! The homemade croissants are lovely, and I love there are plenty of newspapers for you to read. I'm a fan!

Yelp
The best coffee and pastries in Cambridge, hands down. The proprietor, Pete, and his family are shrewd businesspeople, and Savino's is not the kind of cafe one can spend a whole afternoon in, studying -- but once you've earned your stripes as a loyal customer, renounced Starbucks and Costa, brought your parents several times...well, you're in. Savino's is one of the things I miss most about Cambridge. Some of my fondest memories of being an undergraduate are tied to this wonderful little coffee shop. Perfect breakfasts consisting of an Americano, a chocolate croissant hot from the oven, and whatever newspaper you find on the table. Filling brunches of panini (you can't beat the Al Pesto) and salad with extra balsamic vinegar. The smoothies are also really amazing. Especially number 6.

Yelp
This is the best place to get coffee from in Cambridge. Those other generic coffee shops ( you know who they are) have nothing on this place. Excellent coffee. There's a reason why it gets busy. Don't bother with the Costas and Starbucks etc, head straight for Savinos you'll be glad you did. Always friendly. Always good coffee( other beverages are available) and nice pastries.

Yelp
Power was out today in my building, which meant that even the starbucks downstairs was closed. Eh, i'll give Savino's a shot again.... i remember it not being very good but maybe it was an off day. Watching the guy make my latte i had to cringe. oversteamed milk sloshed into a cup with flavorless espresso in it. thanks, i'll pass.

Yelp
Savino's is an authentic italian coffe shop in the middle of Cambridge. Queuing up can seem a bit slow and time-consuming. But once you do get served they are very accommodating, efficient and friendly. Wonderful range of food to choose from and all mouthwateringly appealing. I went with a dolce latte and artichoke heart panini, which was heavenly. The place seems quite busy and popular, but still manged to seem chilled out despite this. I enjoyed taking it easy over lunch with a book and mellow jazz tunes paying in the background. If ever you are in Cambridge I would recommned you avoid the high street franchises and give Savino's a try.

Yelp
One of the best places to get a genuine coffee in Cambridge. As it's between the two parts of Emmanuel College, it is excessively popular with those students, but also with many students of other colleges, and actual real people who simply live in the city of Cambridge. It's right by the main bus stations, so it additionally gets very busy with bus travellers coming in and out of the town centre. The staff are full of beans, no doubt buzzing on caffeine from the excellent coffee. It's a good place to meet, but too bustling to get anything done. The sandwiches are very good too.

Yelp
During my several visits to Cambridge, the Savinos turned out as the one and only real alternative when it comes to Italian coffee specialties. Forget Nero and all the other bucket-of-industrial-coffee-flavor-liquid-providers in CBR. Here you get the very same classical cappuccino in look and taste you'd expect between Calabria and Piemonte - no bells an whistles. Besides the typical Italian dishes they offer a heavenly carrot cake which is a class of its own. The icing is simply unforgettable. Contains more magic flavor and less sweetness. No idea weather the slighly chaotic organizaton from staff, frequently long queues and hard-to-find-seating is part of the concept, simply charming or downright annoying. BTW: do not try to find a parking place nearby. This is a lets-have-a-short-break-during-our-city-splurge-thing!

Yelp
What a gem! Savino's is located on Emmanuel street in the heart of Cambridge city centre. It is the closest you'll get to an authentic Italian cafe in Cambridge. The bus stop outside is busy- Savino's is busy inside.Great Illy coffee with reasonably priced menu is similarly Italian, various 'Insalata' are described on a chalk board & Panini which are named ' alla Luca' and 'alla Sara' are made up of ingredients like Parma Ham, Artichoke hearts, Mozzerella & Pastrami. Ideal for a light lunch! The staff ooze with professional Gusto & Buzz knowing that they need to keep pace of the growing line of people in front of them. The seating inside and out on the pavement is good, one does not ever feel hemmed in, in any way as this establishment uses big mirrors and apporoiate appropriate Italian decor to good effect. People come and go this place has been here for years - A collage made of photographs of hundreds of happy customers is testimony to Savino's loyal following, many of whom are greeted like long-lost friends.

Yelp
Best croissants around. Tried various places in Cam and London and these are by far the best. Coffee is quite good as well, but the croissants alone are worth the visit!

Yelp
Really nice service and great coffee... One of my favorite places in Cambridge!

Yelp
Savino's offered a great quick lunch. The cafe is in the heart of the city center and when I arrived at lunch time most of the tables were full. I grabbed a veggie soup and an Illy espresso. The staff were pleasant and the food was tasty. Just about all I could ask for in a cafe for lunch. Not a bad place for a solo visit either since there is a counter along the wall with stools to sit at and read for a bit. It's not the coziest cafe in terms of how it "feels." I would recommend Stickybeaks for that just up the road.

Yelp
There are few places in Cambridge where you can get a decent cup of coffee. Savinos is definitely the exception to the rule! I regularly get my caffeine fix in this delightful, family-run, central city cafe. I used to find it too smoky back in the days before smoke-free legislation came in - but now it's a delight to sit inside, read a paper and sip a sumptuous cup of coffee.

Yelp
Well, what can i say??!!! I go to Savinos every single morning before work and have done for last 4 yrs! Such a relaxed friendly atmosphere! And lovely bacon rolls!! Say hi if you see me in there!

Yelp
It is a small cafe' where I always pop in whenever I am in Cambridge. It is a proper Italian place - not only name, but staff, paninis, even radio. Not like in some sort of Italian places with MTV music playing at all times. You won't hear that in Savino's. You may get carried away with romanctic melody of Eros Ramazzotti, you may hear "come stai , bella?" from some of the visitors...(obviously if you are a female, otherwise it would be "bello") here is the place, where you can get eSpresso, not eXpresso. And it tastes like the one I used to drink in Italy...Long time ago, sitting outside Milan Duomo...

Yelp
This place is very authentic! Very convenient location by the main bus stop and because of this it can get very full and stressful, but when it's good it is GOOD. Sunday morning creamy treats are done best here...

Yelp
A biscotti's-throw from two busy bus-stop ports, Savino's is the early-bird of Cambridge's cafes and even at the sluggish hour of seven you will find it bustling and crowded with early-risers grabbing a bite before the arrival of the Citi 1. If caffeine is your essential start-up for the day, try replacing it with the amassable energy flying around this establishment. Of course, you can still get the caffeine here too; Savino's offering some of the best authentic coffee in Cambridge. Yet you might find that extra espresso shot unnecessary after ten minutes soaking up the atmosphere of this wonderful hub.

Yelp
Brilliant location! times when I come to Cambridge by bus, first thing I do - look for a lovely place to sit and grab s strong coffee. Cofein what I live on every day. So, Savinos it is just there waiting for me. I like their interior, but wish the place were a bit bigger, as very often is overcrowded. And it would make me happier, if I never had to qeue for my coffee. However, ten minutes waiting is worth the joy and strength I get after ordering my triple espresso....

Yelp
Good coffee, well served. Took me back to my childhood seeing a picture of the late Mr Savino in his ice-cream van on the backs. Was always a Sunday treat to have one of his whppy ices.

Yelp
I used to go three regularly for my espresso (still one of the best in town); was pleasantly surprised that they've now started doing vegan milk alternatives - my recent soya latte was very flavoursome and not at all weak as you can sometimes find in even authentic Italian coffee shops. My friends had chai latte and apparently it was delicious! The location is a downside (across the road from the bus stops, v noisy & polluted, so sitting outside is not an option unless you are into inhaling fumes;), but inside is nice enough or get a takeaway ! Nice friendly service.
