The Best Bakeries in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Sandra Sherva and Max Okray’s Savory Bake House, nestled into a yolk-yellow building on Lake Street, dishes up all kinds of delightful pastries and baked goods, delving skillfully into both savory and sweet realms. It’s best to check Instagram for the latest details on weekend specials, but expect bites like root vegetable gratin hand pies, blueberry sweet cream scones, cinnamon roll cookies, and much, much more. Note that Savory Bake House is only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon; it’s best to get there early." - Stacy Brooks

Haven't had a thing here I didn't love. They are so creative & unique & they execute each item beautifully, with SO much flavor. The little walk-up window is a charming, efficient setup & the owners are so pleasant. Wishing them all the best for many years to come! GET A BRIOCHE SANDWICH. ❤️

Google
everything from here is always phenomenal! the service is welcoming, the other customers waiting in line are pleasant, it's just so lovely every time I go to pick up some pasties. I love the selection of food and flavors. nothing short of amazing here!

Karla Selness

Google
Everything I have had here has been consistently wonderful. Dress appropriately for the weather and at times there is a small wait but it is worth every minute. They are kind, community minded folk and it is a joy to support them.

Sean Lawrence

Google
A labor of love that has paid off, Sandra and Max earn the consistent lines of eager customers waiting for their turn at the ordering window. My favorites are the savory scones, but if you have a sweet tooth I recommend the lemon strawberry ricotta muffins

Google
hidden gem in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis. I feel like only the locals and some instagram foodies know about this special bakery. Open only a few days a week come early and be prepared to wait in line to order tasty treats savory and sweet at the cute little window by Max. Reminds me of a little European bakery with the vibe, menu is posted at the front but it's best to check out their social media pages day of for updates in case what you want is sold out ! Haven't had anything bad here yet, wish it was closer so l could visit more often

Google
There's a reason it's 4.9 stars: everything is outstanding. The peanut butter pie bars are amazing. Take out only, and they sell out of many items early.

Ellen Hawley

Google
Such a great little gem! We had a sweet bread and a savory roll and both were delicious. We will definitely be back again to try something else!

Shannon Mahedy

Google
The long line was totally worth it! Fresh, flavorful baked goods are available at this neighborhood hidden gem. Service is friendly and fast. Get there early before everything sells out…

Yelp
Love love savory bake house everything that comes out of this bakery is a work of art! No soggy bottoms here! Flavors are spot on. Tip: follow them on instagram and facebook to keep up with their opening times and rotating menu of goodies. Be ready to wait in line but Friday or Sunday before 10am is not that bad!

Yelp
I had been going every other week since a year ago. I usually wake up early and arrive before they open, as people like to go and line up early, and a lot of stuff gets sold out relatively quickly. My favorite is the Polish Roll; and it's a very buttery roll/bun with a very savory and umami filling, and the filling inside is very generous. Every day, they offer various GF items, especially cakes. You can order ahead whole cakes for special occasions, and they are highly affordable.

Yelp
Absolute killer strawberry sponge cake and great chili, new biscotti that Doll loves.

Yelp
Amazing food and lovely small neighborhood business!! I eat here every time I visit. Always hoping for the Polish Sausage roll.

Yelp
Only a few things you need to know: 1) Go 2) Go early 3) Check their website/socials if you're unsure if they're open or woke up too late. They will say if they sold out 4) Free street parking everywhere! 5) Expect a line 6) Write down or take pictures of the names of what you order because they don't have the same menu everyday and you goodies will not last much longer than a 30 second photo shoot! It'll make your Yelp review easier ;) 7) Everything is DELICIOUS! Okay just a little more - Savory Bake House is locally owned. It's a got a cult following (is that pc to say?). It's a no fluff no frills place! The name says it all! It's not just sweet baked goods. They have a ton of savory options and a ton of sweet options! Rotating menu, you never know what will be there! And that's why so many people wait in line when they're open! I'd consider this one of Minneapolis' best hidden gems!

Yelp
Everything I have tried has always been a 10/10. This place is amazing and their quiche crust is to die for. Nothing is ever too salty, or too sweet- always just right. Check their instagram before going! You must try!!

Yelp
Always mind blown by the yummy goodness that comes from this tiny bakery. Their menu changes every weekend and there is ALWAYS a line of people happily coming to buy oodles of pastries. The first 4 times I came to this place, someone in front of me bought all of the brioche sandwiches before I could try one! It was maddening but once I got the chance to have one I understood why! Every item is made with love and high quality ingredients. I recommend coming by around 10am at the latest if you want a chance to try anything on the menu before things start to sell out. also check their instagram for what to expect on the menu! It's an order at the window operation and I've normally had no issues finding street parking. Best wishes to the owners, so happy this exists in my neighborhood!

Yelp
Fabulous choices and everything was delicious. The line moved pretty quick and the staff was great as I slowly made my choice. What a wonderful find for us---we will be back to taste more. Everyone in our group loved what we had. Scrumptious!!!

Yelp
Really amazing. I would have taken pictures but the items disappeared too quick. No parking lot but lots of street parking nearby. You walk up to the window and order. The daily menu is posted at the ordering window. I was behind a regular customer and he told me about all of the amazing food. The Polish roll is only available on weekends and was excellent. Everything was excellent but I really loved the Brioche. It was a slice oozing with goodness. Ultra orange vanilla cream cake Polish roll Pecan caramel roll Pecan chocolate tart Brioche with tomatoes, spinach, cheese Customer service was great. Worth the trip.

Yelp
So this review is for the bacon & leek scone I had both days this weekend. Sure I could write something about the convenience of this place as it is close to my home and when I walk up there with my pooch, they offer custom made treats for that same pooch of mine who now knows the routine; - sit patiently - wait for the customers in front to get out of the way - tail does small wag as he gets spoken to - gets treat - devours I could even write about the many quiche that are made fresh each day or the pies, oh those tasty pot pies that are filled with with all sorts of goodness that warm you up. Alfredo to curry to Wellington to something else. Always changing, always tasty. No, I'm writing about that scone. And it's not one of the many other scones or cookies or tarts that they make that when you eat, you eat in small delicate bites so you can extend the experience just a bit longer. And one last clarification, this is not about that churro cream puff I had the previous weekend that when I ate it, my eyes would close and savor that wonderful filling. No, it's about that bacon & leek scone. It's subtle bacon and salt mixed in the pastry was the perfect blend of goodness. And that first one I had on Saturday that I had that was still warm? Oh man! "I should've bought two!" I thought, as I made my walk home down the sidewalk nibbling away at my new discovery. So yesterday I went back hoping they had more and they did! But they only had one up front on their little wood trays that fit in so well with the whole motif of the place. "You have any more in back?" I hopefully asked and with a response of "three more" the decision was made to clean them out. So I apologize to the people behind me in case you wanted one but I bought the last four. Be thankful is all I ask because I may have saved you from an addiction as I think I have become a bacon & leek scone junkie.

Yelp
Definitely go here! NOW! This is a tiny local bakery, but it's full of amazing savory and sweet treats. I even went in the afternoon, when things were pretty picked over, and found a great lunch. I prefer savory to sweet, so this is my new jam! The man at the counter was helpful and convincing of what would be the best choice for me. I ordered a veggie curry pie and a gluten free salted caramel peanut chocolate torte. (check out my pics). While I was waiting for the pie to be heated, I figured I better try a date ball. Who doesn't like balls?! I bit into it and I immediately noticed a snap, crackle and pop in my mouth. I am not going to ruin it for you, but there was an amazing secret ingredient that added another dimension to this tasty ball. The adorable man at the counter shared it was the owners grandmother's recipe. The veggie pie had just the right amount of curry, which was not too overpowering. They were also seasoned well and seemed roasted. The best part was the crust was not thick, therefore did not take over the pie with a gummy texture. The torte was good, but I cant wait to try the cherry almond scone or sweet potato chocolate sweetbread. Let this place blow your mind!

Yelp
Such. Good. Stuff. Made by such good people. I came for the savory, but stayed for the sweet. My 82 year old dad declared their cream puff the best in the land. I also love their dedication to humanitarian causes. They've got my support for good. Worth every minute waiting in line.

Yelp
You cannot beat this place. Lovely owners, lovely food, lovely neighborhood staple. Go for pastries but pick up lunch too - I dream about their savory brioche sandwiches. Also try their homemade chai and fantastic cold brew!

Sara G.

Yelp
Come here for unique, flavorful baked goods. I usually stop in on Sunday mornings when I am in the area and whenever I go I find something new and completely unique to this bakery. Everything I have tried has been great, but I especially love all of their savory baked goods. However do not make the mistake of coming here late in the day. I have arrived to find most of the goods picked over and I once even found the shop closed because they were all sold out! Also, do not expect to come here, sit down with a cup of coffee and your baked goods while watching the world go by. There is nowhere to sit in the tiny shop so you'll have to take your baked goods elsewhere! Definitely put this small bakeshop on your bucket list!
google avatar

Ashley E.

Yelp
I live a stone's throw from here and after they opened, I sent an email asking about vegan options. The owner sent a pretty rude reply about how all baking involves eggs and milk. Ermmmm....okay. I guess he hasn't been to the Birchwood Cafe, French Meadow, any of the co-ops, or Modern Times Cafe. Just a few of the places in the Twin Cities offering great and innovative food for people with all sorts of dietary needs. It's 2017, great substitute products exist. Even for (gasp) baking! As a result of this interaction, my omnivorous husband has never visited here either.
google avatar

Leah B.

Yelp
Unbelievably good baked goods- scones, quiche, muffins. All are winners and have you coming back as often as you can swing it. Coffee there is quite questionable, but go elsewhere for coffee.
google avatar

Ellie S.

Yelp
A great locally owned bake shop with a changing variety of sweet and savory items. The house made chai is perfectly spicy and the staff are nice. A gem in the neighborhood.

Mark H.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood bakery with passionate, creative and caring owners. Today i got curry & chicken soup, polish roll and quiche. Delicious But get there early because they are becoming a popular stop for Savory Bake House groupies. Oh and cinnamon roll Saturday always draws a crowd. I'll be back many times.
google avatar

Heidi H.

Yelp
These are the things I have had and loved: cream puffs, quiche, sausage puff something or other, grapefruit bread, some macaroon cookie thing. Things that I've had and didn't like: nothing. It's always good. My neighbor would bring me treats from here and I finally ambled over myself one morning. Black Sabbath was playing over over the speakers. Deliciousness was in the air. Service was kind and competent. Probs should get over and get your baked goods on.
google avatar

Karen A.

Yelp
I always stop when I am in the area of Savory Bake House. Have indulged in both sweet and savory options. It's all amazing! It's tucked around the corner off of Lake Street and a small shop. Stop and enjoy.
google avatar

Sammy S.

Yelp
ok so i love this place but i also hate that i never seem to go at the right time... like whenever i arrive, its always slim pickins, the good stuff sells out fast. and idk what time to arrive, cuz it seems like they just make diff stuff all day long i do love it tho and hope one day i will arrive at just the right time to experience everything good. its fun tho, because they always have different stuff everytim ive been. I like the brioche bread sammies and some of the sweet stuff really rocks
google avatar

Leah O.

Yelp
As someone else mentioned, the date balls are incredible- amazing flavor, amazing texture, and for the price you can eat six of 'em at a time and not feel guilty. LAY OFF ME, IT'S FRUIT. But I had their chocolate brioche today and it was poorly made. Tough, bland dough that stuck to the wrapper so much that I lost half the bun when I took it off, and the chocolate filling didn't come through at all flavor-wise. Mixed bag, but worth a swing through every so often!
google avatar

Caitlin P.

Yelp
Savory bake house is small inside but packs a ton of tasty options in their display case. Brioche was amazing!!!

Keith S.

Yelp
The pastry renaissance continues. I couldn't be happier. The Savory Bakehouse fills a nice little niche, offering treats but also a significant number of...as the name suggests...savory baked items. Meat, cheese and veggie filled items. Pot pies, quiches, croissants and more. I can't stray too far from the coco so gimme that sugar. The dessert items are milder in comparison to many bakeries, it won't hurt your teeth and many are lighter or more subtle in nature. And it's pretty damn good. I had a date ball (never had that before) that was fantastic. A pumpkin cake with maple cream cheese that was both light and decadent. A churro cream puff that was too much in the best way.
google avatar

Kat B.

Yelp
Ok so confession, I've been avoiding doing this review because I don't want the secret getting out. I'm someone who often goes for savory over sweet and have had some of the most tastiest confections of cheese and bread here! Every time you go the offerings will be different and how many places are that creative? Love it. The items sell out and are fairly pricey but once you put said item in your mouth you'll know why.
google avatar

Anna M.

Yelp
Everything, absolutely everything I've had from here is fabulous. Always something new in the case! Lots of savory mini pies, sandwiches, and brioches with inventive fillings! We love the fruit breads too. The chocolate ganache cake we ordered last year was TO DIE FOR. The only downside of Savory is that you have to go early before the case of freshly baked goods has been emptied by their growing fandom.
google avatar

Andre M.

Yelp
This place has incredible food! Make sure to get there early for the best selection but everything I've tried is amazing and is thoroughly impressive. The same guy helps me every time and is super friendly/helpful and I just want to make sure everybody gets to try this cute little places food. Stop by!!
google avatar

Yelp
Savory Bake House is a winner! We stopped in during opening weekend just to check it out and left with a bag full of Christmas sweets for a crowd. The pumpkin spice cake is delicious: moist, perfectly spiced, and topped with sour cherries for perfect balance. The pumpkin snickerdoodles, sugar cookies with cream cheese icing, and white chocolate almond chai cookies were all delicate and tasty. Service was friendly and attentive. With great food and kind people, this place is bound to quickly become a favorite. I love how these bakers have turned a tiny, forgotten space on 36th Avenue into a bright neighborhood spot. Can't wait to come back on my morning commute for some savory goods & a coffee.

Yelp
Amazing original sweet and savory baked goods. Dangerous having it so close! Try the quiche, amazing crust. On weekends try the Polish roll.
google avatar

Katy B.

Yelp
I came here to try some tasty treats. My husband had been eyeing it but never made it out of work on time. Let me tell you, it is delicious and worth going off the beaten path if you live further away. The churro puff with cream in it had such fresh delicious cream and whatever the pastry was that looked like it had an egg on top, it was really lemon custard, was fantastic! One of the best desserts I've had in a long time.
google avatar

Abby M.

Yelp
My first time time at this place. I got the Polish roll (amazing!) , a square of broccoli/bacon quiche, a chocolate salted caramel cookie sandwich, and a churo cream puff. All were quite tasty. Fresh and the pastries cooked well. The only reason I gave it a 4/5 is I thought it would have more savory options than sweet.

Sandra C.

Yelp
This little bakery packs a lot of punch! Get here early to get the best pick of their freshly made scrumptiousness. The selection is always changing which I like, because there are always surprises ans something unusual. You can get lovely sweet, and like the name infers, savory stuff. Today I picked up gingerbread, lemon raspberry bread, chicken noodle soup and rolls stuffed with beef and cheese. Favorites I often get are peanut butter cookies, churro cream puffs, chicken curry stew, lemon curd tarts, and Hungarian mushrooom pies. Max is in charge of the counter and always has great stories. Sandy is the extraordinary baker. You should stop by, say hello, and get some treats.
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
Excellent place -- very big fan of both food and service. Had the donut and blueberry muffin. Both were amazing! You can expect to see different food options every time you visit. Hope this business concept works out for them. Glad to see new businesses going into the East Lake St corridor.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I love this place. Savory and sweet baked goods that are delicious, and the owners are super nice. Our most recent stop included a free mini-pumpkin for our two year old. Local/small business at its best.

Beth C.

Yelp
5 out of 5. Every. Single. Time. Amazing service and the best treats ever. I always want to post a photo of the gorgeous bakes but they get eaten before that can happen.
google avatar

Milly M.

Yelp
I just popped in there for my first time. This place is going to mess me up. The Savory brioche was spectacular. I hope this becomes a neighborhood Institution.
google avatar

Granny K.

Yelp
We had some very delicious cherry pie and a delicious veggie samosa.

Chad B.

Yelp
Great mom and pop bakery. Lots of excellent scones and pastries. Tried a snow ball, amazing! So great to have this place in our neighborhood.
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
Incredible food. You can tell that a huge amount of time and effort went into each baked good. Everything is delicious and this bakery has a strong group of regulars. There is patio seating outside surrounded by lovely flower boxes. But i dont know if it was the incredible tart that i was eating or the flowers but i was getting swarmed by bees. Too many bees but amazing food.

Brad K.

Yelp
What a great little spot. Superb pastries from an experienced pastry chef. Longfellow has needed this place for a long time!
google avatar

Collin A.

Yelp
This small, new-ish bakery, right across the street from Merlin's Rest, surprised me with their selection, decor and professionalism when I arrived. We were about to leave on a bike expedition in southern Minnesota and needed some fuel. We ended up opting for one of the savory quiches, a raspberry sur cream muffin and some kind of amazing, cheesy, meat pastry. All were delectable, especially the "meat-cheeser". The place was hoppin' on a Saturday, but they kept the crowd moving, a plus, since this is a small space. Staff was friendly and courteous, and we got our food and service faster than might be expected. This place is down the street from me, and I'll be going back for sure.
google avatar

Lauren K.

Yelp
I adore this place! I rarely order the same thing twice. They often mix up their options and I love it. I haven't had anything I didn't like and I love getting to try new things. Their muffins are amazing (the consistency is unlike any other bakery in the area) and their savory brioches are to delightful. GO HERE.
google avatar

Paige W.

Yelp
Everything I've had here has been awesome. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. I was especially impressed with the chocolate molasses pecan tart (did I name that right?), veggie and bacon sandwich on brioche, and totally perfect chicken noodle soup. I didn't even know they had soup, but they do, and it's wonderful. You must try... everything. This place is really special.

Skye M.

Yelp
I usually don't comment but the Carrot Cake! Oh my! Best ever. Get the date balls too but don't let your husband taste them, there won't be any left! The Cream puffs are amazing! I have never seen a bakery where you can get breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Individual pot pies, baked sandwiches, etc! Once you try Savory, good luck just walking by!

MaryLynn M.

Yelp
Savory is amazing. I've tried their quiches, their pumpkin and churro cream puffs, but my favorite has been the brioches--I don't know how else to describe it beyond just saying it is one of the most delicious pastries and tastiest things I've ever eaten, ever. I do wish they were open every day--hope their business grows so they can make that happen!

Albert M.

Yelp
Customer service very friendly. A/C pleasant. I was there at just after they opened at 8am and my savory scone was still warm. Muffin warm and sweet (bordering on gooey in a way I liked. Those were each a clean $2. I decided to go with a $1 cookie that was good for the price, but not worth getting if you have outstanding other options. I'll be back very soon. Looking at the pictures here I find they must rotate their selection. PRESENTATION is excellent in the case, but even moreso the items themselves. Quiche and sandwiches are next to try.

K S.

Yelp
So excited about this place! We tried a mixed berry muffin and a hot chocolate scone to start - both were incredible. The person working there was very friendly and welcoming. The place is small but has good vibes. I can't wait to try their savory pies!
