My name is Randal. And I lived in Orlando during the pandemic. I was super excited to move to a new city and approach LGBT/gay bars and clubs about getting getting a DJ gig..
I had done my research, and one of the bartenders directed me to speak to one of the owners. When I sent him a message on Facebook, there was no response. And when I introduced myself to him in person, he treated me so Cold.. I also approached him about it a 2nd and a 3rd time. And the response I received was stuck up, snotty, pretentious and Catty to say the least..
There’s a severe issue with bars/clubs in the LGBT community where bartenders are getting paid minimum wage. Drag entertainers are getting used by the dozens for tips. And bar staff, bartenders, and DJs are not being recognized, highlighted or supported on the bar/club’s social media accounts..
Gay bars/clubs these days have been turned into a money grab. Charging obscene amounts of money for entrance for events such as Pride. And do bare minimum to support the LGBT community..
During that time, I was struggling for housing. There are hundreds of LGBT people in this city alone that do not have proper food, clothing and shelter. It would’ve meant the world to me to be hired by Savoy. But I guess not even receiving a response is exactly how the LGBT community treats each other these days..
Gay Bars/Clubs usually have at least one DJ. They use them for their music and for drag shows. Why would I want work for a place that doesn’t even put their DJ on a flyer?..
There are other people in the LGBT community that have other careers, hobbies and interests that deserve to be acknowledged, supported and included..
Not just drag entertainers..
