Sawaan Thai Restaurant - Review - Mission - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The Mission’s newest Thai spot is Sawaan, a casual restaurant serving stir-fries, noodles, and curries—get everything from green curry and tom kha to gravy noodles. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Julia Chen

We are a family (8) from Thailand born and raised there stumbled upon this new Thai restaurant while we're waiting for a pizza place next door, and decided to give them a chance. Mind oh mind the first best decision in 2026! Everything was super delicious that we didn't want to write a review because we're afraid that they'd become so popular, and we have to wait in line next time. The food quality is 10 out of 10. The portion was perfect for 4 adults to share on each dish. Most dishes are even more delicious than what we could get in Thailand! The presentation on each dish was very thoughtful and detailed oriented. Our kids (7-13) were super grateful they got to eat the food the same quality they used to taste in Thailand. Oh, they also have the best Thai iced tea, not the sugar and color only kind. It tasted like the real deal. Also, be mindful not to order extra spicy because as Thais who eat spicy food, we were suffering when we ordered the soup extra spicy! Definitely going back to try the rest on the menu!

I visited Sawaan a couple months ago now and I still remember the fondness I felt after leaving the meal. They are a new modern Thai restaurant with a fresh take on a thai cuisine menu and trendy decor. The staff here are so sweet and considerate. We ordered the tofu cloud, spicy drunken heaven, and the lemongrass catfish. The tofu cloud came with this thick and sweet peanut sauce. I enjoyed the aromatics in the drunken noodles. Our favorite was definitely the catfish. Make sure to eat everything while it is hot! You can taste the freshness in the catfish. Food is most important at a restaurant, yet I’d like to highlight how well decorated Sawaan is. They put a lot of effort in the design choices from the ceramics to the light fixtures to the menu.

One of my new favorite restaurants in the bay! Everything we had was 10/10. The service was also lovely (attentive but not disruptive). We had the cloud ring, golden massaman chicken curry, and spicy drunken heaven. Ambiance was warm with holiday decorations and they have the comfiest chairs! Can’t wait to come back and try more things.

Wow! This is a unique menu full of amazing Thai dishes I’ve never tried. We had the spicy drunken noodles made with the nostalgic Mama noodles that had the addicting Thai chili heat and the cloud rings were fried shrimp cakes. It was a super tasty and delicious experience. An awesome new addition to the neighborhood.

This is a fairly new modem Thai restaurant and it was fun to try. My favorite dishes were the Cloud Ring and the Super Zap Soup. I also ordered the Lemongrass Fish and the Grilled Tongue of the Gods. The Could Ring is fried shrimp and it was fried perfectly. The soup was very tasty with beef tendon, albeit very spicy because I asked for it. 😬 The Lemongrass Fish was okay and the same with the Grilled Tongue. You gotta eat the food quickly or else the texture changes when it gets cold. I would like to come back to try other menu items.

If you’re looking for authentic Thai flavors in a cozy setting, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit. I started with the fried shrimp, which was an absolute highlight—crispy and golden on the outside while staying soft and juicy inside. It’s the kind of dish that makes you want to order a second round. Another standout was the spicy stir-fried seafood, packed with fresh shrimp and squid. The flavors were bold, rich, and perfectly balanced with that signature Thai heat that keeps you coming back for more. Every bite was full of aroma and excitement, making it one of the best versions of this dish I’ve had. The service was warm and friendly, with staff who made the dining experience feel welcoming and relaxed. Combined with the inviting atmosphere of the restaurant, it’s the kind of place where you can enjoy not just the food but also the overall experience. Overall, this is a hidden gem for anyone who loves real Thai cuisine—delicious food, great service, and a comfortable ambiance that makes you want to return. (September 15,2025) I had the lemongrass fish with jasmine rice along with Hatyai-style crispy chicken. Every dish was freshly prepared and full of flavor. The staff were warm and welcoming — it really felt like dining at home. (July 14,2025)

It was INSANELY GOOD I can’t wait to go back!!!!! OMG I couldn’t believe how yummy it was. The hot pink pot was awesome. Duck blood jelly, bay squid, jellyfish, fish ball, tofu, ong choy. Mind literally blown. WOW! Chairs were comfy too, built for a boss.

This Thai restaurant is amazing!! So glad that we have this new spot in the neighborhood. We have been here twice and can really feel how much thoughts have been put into the food, menu design, service, ambience, and even the plates and utensils feel unique and high quality. 👏 It’s modern and creative, like look at the shrimp donuts!! I’ve never seen something like this. The donuts were so much more delicious than I thought it would, thin panko layer, solid shrimp inside and not oily at all. My favorite was the crab on rice. You do get good amount of crab, and it was well seasoned. We came back and ordered it again. We also loved the fried chicken, green curry and macarons from the first visit. However, the macarons were not offered this time, the lemon macaron was so good!
