Fell in love with this charming shop. In the heart of Georgetown; it’s quiet, welcoming and unassuming. I love a cleverly named business, so when I saw it was walking distance from the office, I was sold. I had never been and was so disappointed I got my lunch to go🥺. I called my order in while walking the ten minutes to the shop. My food was ready when I arrived. I got “The Beast” and grazed off the sandwich well past the mid 3pm slump. Nice portion size, very attentive owner, who graciously answered all questions. Wide variety of items for all pallets! Oh we are sooo going back to sit down and have lunch there! 💖

Stayed in the Graham Hotel right next door for 4 days and we literally had breakfast here every single day. Their avocado toast was incredibly delicious because it was so flavorful with goat cheese, a balsamic glaze and a hint of spice. Their coffee was great too and the lady who served us every morning was super friendly. If I could give them 20/10 stars I would!

Talk about a place with potential. Very cute cafe/restaurant vibe, loved the decor and was very hopeful when I walked in. Unfortunately that’s where it ended. The service was fine, but the food wasn’t good. Ordered the grilled cheese combo with a small tomato soup, and a grilled cheese with bacon and a chicken soup. The grilled cheese’s were fine, basically a slice or two of cheese on grilled toast. On mine, one of the crusts was cut off for some reason. I ordered bacon on mine, and $3 for a slice of bacon seemed extreme, but when in DC…. The soups were honestly, pretty bad. The tomato soup had so many, and unnecessary spices, it honestly wasn’t good. The chicken soup was fine, but was overloaded with potato, lumps of chicken (not shredded or small), and other veggies.

I bring my son here occasionally because … grilled cheese! He is a very picky eater, but he loves this grilled cheese sandwich. I usually get the tomato soup which I really enjoy (it’s light and well spiced). We also love the quiet atmosphere — you can actually sit and have a conversation with the person sitting next to you! That’s hard to find.

Cute cafe on a side street in Georgetown. The breakfast bowl was a decent, flavorful portion for $12. The quiche was also a nice-sized slice.

We got tea, soda & caprese paninis with bacon. Did was great. Seating was messy. Every take was dirty & they weren't busy at all. Only two tables filled. We waited around 15 minutes to get someone to help us. We will call her waitress no. 1. She said she'd be right back so she could make a drink. We said ok. She came back, didn't realize we hadn't been there before but even when we told her that, she didn't really tell us how things worked so we had to ask more in detail. We ate our food, which was really yummy. The chairs are super cute but uncomfortable. Waitress no. 2, we asked if the tea came with refills. She seemed perturbed, & said no, she didn't think so. So we asked is there a way to find out for sure? She then rolled her eyes, sighed an exasperated groan then said fine & went to ask. We waited about 7 minutes, & just left. She walked up as we were leaving, to where she rolled her eyes & very audibly sighed again.

We are tourists that live in Sonder hotel, it’s just 3 min walk and food super healthy and delicious. I loved overnight oats. We went 2 mornings, tomorrow we are going again.

Yelp
pros: -DELICIOUS food -quick service -knowledgeable workers -decently large dining space cons: restaurant was smokey as if something had been burned or something? Definitely recommend I'll be back!

Yelp
It's a very cozy atmosphere, Classical music is playing while you dine. The menu is written on the chalkboard as you walk in. There are plenty of tables to sit down a group of two or a group of 10. They have outdoor seating in the front of the establishment and the backyard. They have more tables and heaters for the evening, dining, and a firepot. This is a very elegant and classy dining experience. If you wanna go on a date, this is the perfect place. It could also be a little sophisticated depending on what's your level I enjoyed the experience. The food was delicious and fresh, if I'm ever in DC, I will come back and give them a visit. Say Cheese!!!

Yelp
I never thought I'd ever go anywhere for a grilled cheese sandwich, but now I have an obsession. Many people think a grilled cheese is best made at home, but they are wrong. This was by far the best grilled cheese sandwich I've ever had in my life. The sandwich is made on sourdough bread. I can't tell you what kind of cheese was in it, but it wasn't just American. It tasted like I was eating Mac and cheese between two slices of bread. The sandwich was grilled to perfection. The pumpkin lentil soup was also something to rave about. It had a very delicious herby and hearthy taste to it. Everything I had here was made with love. The owner Suzy was such a sweet heart. She prepared me a delicious chai latte to conclude my meal. The timing was perfect. It was a beautiful fall afternoon and here I am in Georgetown enjoying a classic grilled cheese sandwich, pumpkin lentil soup, and a chai latte. This is what autumn is about. This was comfort and tranquility. I'm excited to come back to Georgetown again so I can try another sandwich and another bowl of soup. Thank you for the wonderful meal! The only downside to this was it took long to place our order. They are clearly short staffed and doing everything they can to serve customers quickly. So be patient with the staff. They are doing their best. You really need to give this place a chance. The prices are very fair for what you're getting. If you want a cheap standard grilled cheese this isn't the place for you. If you want a grilled cheese that's going to change the way you think about grilled cheese then you need to come here. I can also attest that the owner is very welcoming of people from all backgrounds. My friend and I felt very accepted here. A good business owner does not judge their customers, and Suzy is clearly a wonderful business owner that deserves recognition where it's due.

Yelp
Very tiny restaurant with great atmosphere. I had the Greek salad and chicken soup. The soup was steaming hot and had chicken vegetables and broth, it was delicious. The salad was fresh and pretty decent. This place is just off M street and it's a good thing there was a sandwich board sign out front because I wouldn't have even noticed it.

Yelp
A cool fall afternoon and our growling stomachs led us to Say Cheese at their new location on Thomas Jefferson Ave. And boy are we glad we did! We got the Apple and Brie - smooth melted Brie stuffed with sliced green apples and a thin layer of fig jam on crispy toast. Sweet, smooth and delicious. The Mac and cheese sandwich was decadence in a plate - gooey and chewy mac and cheese stuffed between crispy toast. And a tuna melt , just a little spicy, and a Greek salad, fresh and bright, washed down with an iced tea and an iced mocha. Don't forget the chips - one bag per sandwich, and the cozy intimate decor. Definitely a meal worth talking about, you gotta try this place!

Yelp
This place is a great spot for lunch if you are in Georgetown. It is not as small as you might think from the view from the outside. They have seats in the back of the restaurant and a very nice patio area out in the back yard. They have a very full breakfast and lunch menu. We had the pastrami sandwich, which came on toasted bread , mustard and melted cheese. The pastrami was so lean, no fat at all and grilled just right. While it is a sit down restaurant, you go the counter and order and pay for your food first and then when it is ready it is brought to you. Say cheese will put a smile on your face no matter your appetite.

Yelp
This was a cute little sandwich spot that we saw walking through the area. We've never heard of the place before but thought it'll be perfect to try with our preteens. The girls loved their grilled cheese sandwiches. I had the tuna melt and it was okay. I wouldn't order the tuna melt if I was to visit again. The service was nice. There was one woman taking the orders and one woman on the grill. The wait wasn't too bad although they looked busy. The restaurant space is quaint and small. There was enough room for our party of 6. The girls sat at the high top bar and us parents sat at a long wooden table. I would visit again if I am in the area and try the grilled cheese sandwich myself. It did look really good.

Yelp

Yelp
Wonderful service. Ingredients are fresh and everything on the menu is delicious. Cute garden outside where you can see their produce. Such a gem of a place that I am grateful I stumbled upon. Cheers!

Yelp
Great food every time! The owner is hardworking and puts love in every meal! I love the new location. The interior and exterior are even better! Hopefully they can transfer the signage to the new location.

Yelp
Scrumptious Mac & Cheese! Loved the cozy grilled cheese cafe, can't believe I finally discovered it 3 years after they opened up! There are a few small tables inside for seating and a couple of tables in front of the restaurant. The Go Green grilled cheese was tasty with ripe avocado and tomato, which overpowered the monterey jack cheese. If you like avocado, go for it! The side of mac and cheese was divine with a spicy kick from the monterey jack cheese. Glad I got a side and next time will go for the grilled Mac N' Cheese sandwich! The house-made Oreo cookie was a delicious with Oreo cookies baked into the batter. Skip the cappuccino - it was burnt and too hot to drink. The elderly woman owner is nice and passionate about making the mac and cheese so tasty! The cafe is truly a hidden gem off the main drag on M street and excited to go back for the Grilled Mac N' Cheese sandwich!

Yelp
It's tucked away in a little side street from Downtown. Super quaint, with indoor and outdoor seating. Service was a little slow, but the owner is super friendly. She really makes an effort to talk to people when they come in, so you feel really special. Food is great! I got the roast beef sandwich, and I was a little worried it was going to be hard to get clean bites. That was not the case, and my sandwich was gone in 15 minutes. Tomato soup is awesome. Really great seasoning! The owner is from Jordan, so they have some interesting menu items like za'atar toast. The only critique is that they have wallpaper on the bathroom ceiling. A little weird, but doesn't take away from the food. Will definitely come again if I'm in town!

Yelp
We ordered a Turkey Club and a Tuna Salad sandwich. Good: service was great. We ate outside and the person brought us our food. Bread is tasty. Got extra ice for my drink since it was a hot day. My tuna salad was also tasty. Bad: the Turkey tastes and looks like the discount turkey you'd get at the deli, or worse, prepackaged. The chips we got were a 1oz bag of Utz. For the price point I'd expect a more premium brand. Ugly: The avocado was rock hard and was taken out of the sandwich because it was not edible. The lettuce was very wilted and turning brown. Most of that had to be taken out of the sandwich. I'd expect low quality ingredients from a cheap place, but given the price point.. this place was a miss. I could have complained about the lettuce and avocado, but I would think someone making sandwiches knows when avocado is edible or not, and when lettuce is going bad. I would not recommend this place to my friends.

Yelp
I'm a bit conflicted with this review as my experience was a bit off due to the timing. I came about an hour before closing but in my defense there were many patrons after me so I think it's normal for their business. I ordered a few sandwiches (regular grilled cheese, a strawberry Brie, tuna). Where we went wrong was the drink order. I attempted to order every drink on the menu but they were out of everything...Tea, juice, lemonade. I successfully ordered 3 teas but after paying, they informed me they were out and offered canned sodas. This is fine, but the sodas were cheaper than what I had paid for so you get where I'm going with this. The strawberry Brie was the star and I wish I had ordered just that as the regular grilled cheese and the tuna were a bit a of a let down. The service is spotty but the location is good, just off the main drag. It's a bit pricey but everything in the area is. Overall, it's a cute spot, but they just need to work on the service and availability.

Rami K.

Yelp
We ordered and paid for one sandwich. After 52 minutes we went to check on our order and we still couldn't get our food. The staff ended up giving our sandwich to someone else. An apology and, ideally, a refund probably would have been appropriate. Instead, the staff ended up yelling at us.

Yelp
A true Georgetown gem. Everything from menu items to cookies to lemonade are freshly homemade. Tasty and fresh. Prices are reasonable too. Spacious and cozy environment, like home dining. Owner is fantastic. Please give it a try when you are in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Say Cheese breakfast omelet taste so good and looks pretty. I will definitely come back again if I'm in DC. Highly recommended. Thank you!

Yelp
A hidden gem in Georgetown. Extensive menu with tons of choice for breakfast and brunch. Classy.

Yelp
Came here for lunch. Very cute little shop. I ordered a soup and a sandwich. Chicken sandwich #1 was delicious. It came with cheese, chicken, bell peppers, Mayo, onions on sourdough bread. The chicken was diced up. If also came with chips on the side. A little on the salty side. I also ordered the tomato soup. I'm sorry but it was not my cup of tea. It tasted sweet. Too sweet for me. It was nice filling my sandwich in it though. Combination of sweet and salty. Overall, I would come back and try another sandwich. They all sound delicious.

Yelp
Super cute and delicious lunch spot in Georgetown! We tried the Brie & Apple grilled cheese, Sloppy Joe grilled cheese, and Tomato soup. They were all so delicious! The restaurant itself has plenty of seating and has a French bistro vibe. The service is a little slow so do expect a bit of a wait. Will be back when shopping in Georgetown!
google avatar

Yelp
Beyond slow and the staff has no idea what they are doing. I wish I could take my tip back but you tip and pay when you order and now I know why. My favorite part of the meal was when only two drinks out of four show up and the drinks are for the wrong table. It took another 20 mins to find our ice teas and another 10 after that to find our smoothies. At one point I thought we might have to send out a search party! After all that the sad part is when the food finally came it was only so so.

Yelp
This place has great chocolate chip banana bread and the people working here are very friendly. It is open, bright and clean. The menu has many great options. 10/10 you are missing out if you don't eat here!

Yelp
Don't know if you've noticed, but Say Cheese! is a one-woman show! Mrs. Suzy is the highlight of so many of our days! (We work on 30th). If you're looking for a meal that feels like you had time to pack a lunch from your own kitchen, Say Cheese! Is the place for you. Mrs. Suzy also customizes her menu if you want to order lighter options. (Within reason of course!) A few of my favorites: Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Creamy Tomato soup. |Turkey and Apple Butter Grilled Cheese Sandwich | Apple Arugula Salad (She makes the lemon vinaigrette in-house!!) Seasonal Fav: Pumpkin Lentil Soup (SO GOODTT) A few of my colleagues' favorites: Tuna Melt Grilled Cheese, Oatmeal cookie, Brownie, Peanut Butter Shake, Fresh Homemade Lemonade (Better than Beyoncé's Lemonade ). The pickiest kid, friend, adult is guaranteed to find something on this menu that they will return to Say Cheese! for. Mrs. Suzy listens to her customers' countless stories, problems, laughs and woes. She is a gem in Georgetown and we don't deserve her. There are also books and toys for the littlest Say Cheesers. Arrive early. Leave happy. I'm the one giving you a nasty look behind my mask if you're rushing Mrs. Suzy. Don't rush Mrs. Suzy. ¡Buen provecho!

Yelp
Came on a whim and glad i did. Gouda crunch sandwich was great- i could get that again when i want a grilled cheese. Tomato soup was slightly sweeter than i prefer but still a good addition to the sandwich. Delicious lemonade! Friendly service.
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
Do not let your first impression take over and give this place a chance; you will be glad you did. The specialty sandwiches come with a bag of chips. The combo platter will allow you to try the delicious soup. We tried the sloppy Joe, apple butter and turkey, and the classic grilled cheese sandwiches. All three options were delicious! Our experience reminded me of a soup-related Seinfeld episode. You will get it after you order ;).
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
First of all, owner is VERY RUDE, RACIST, homophobic. Me and Partner went to go get some lunch and my partner needed to use the bathroom really bad. The lady who is the owner said it's for customers only. I said I am going to buy something and then she said it's actually Out of Order. When I posted on the google reviews she even lied further. Secondly if you look more closely there is a lot of people saying she charges a $5 service charge for dine In customers. I can't vouch for this but based on her review from google she is one Hungry money hog. Menu is expensive definitely would not recommend $12 sandwich for something that can be made for $4. I know because we sell Grilled cheeses at Montgomery county fair for only $4.75.

Yelp
I had been meaning to check out this place the next time I visited, and then the pandemic happened. We finally went shopping in Georgetown again and I dragged my fiancé here. There's a great variety of of foods for vegetarians and meat eaters alike! The smoothies look delicious too! The atmosphere is very inviting and the owner was nice. We enjoyed sitting and eating our sandwiches and soups/chili. I ordered the Sloppy Joe and the chili while my fiancé had the classic combo. Both sandwiches were yummy and the tomato soup was the perfect grilled cheese dipping soup, so creamy and flavorful. The vegetarian chili was delicious too! I think we were pretty happy all around, the food was just what we were looking for.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cute place! Probably one of the best grilled cheese and sandwiches I've ever had--I ordered the Cheese #1 and the Classic : ) Tomato soup was also amazing (had hints of rosemary).

Yelp
Only place I eat every time I am in Georgetown. Love this place. Homemade recipes made from scratch.

Yelp
A preliminary 4 stars for a wonderful new Georgetown cheese and sandwich spot. My wife and I have been walking by Say Cheese, near the corner of 29th and M, for months wondering when it would open. As I was on my way to catch a bus recently, I saw that it had finally opened, so I stopped in to check it out. As of the date of this review, the place is still putting on the final touches. However, it is functional and already a nice place to visit. The interior is a nice little space that has the modern deli/coffee shop look that works well. The equipment is all brand new (I know because behind the counter is a fairly open concept) and the register is a modern card-only setup. I walked up to the counter and a nice gentleman handed me a piece of paper with today's items. I believe the idea will be to try out items and see what works and what doesn't. While not ideal now, I appreciate the venue's openness to ideas and giving the customer what they want. In fact, they even took some of my advice about a small way to make one of their sandwiches even better (#cheesechips). In terms of the options, Say Cheese offers cheese (obviously), sandwiches and a few other small snack items. It also serves some desserts and coffee (although they said hot chocolate may be coming soon!). I decided to order the Gouda Crunch (I think that was the name) and the dessert sandwich that was like a s'more crossed with a banana sandwich. Both of my items were made right away and tasted great! The bread the venue uses is solid, and the flavor combos show creativity and work well. Overall, Say Cheese is a fun new addition to the Georgetown scene. While it still has some growing to do and finishing touches to make to get to that 5 star level, it is already a fun place for people looking for a bite in Georgetown to check out.

Yelp
We stopped by on a whim while we were shopping in Georgetown. My 6 year old devoured the chassis grilled cheese except for the crust. My wife and I had the tuna salad, it has a kick but very good and we also shared the Greek Goddess (Spinach, Feta, Grilled Mozzarella, Sun-dried Tomato Paste) which was also very good. Plus two water for a grand total of $40+. A little pricey but not bad as it was all homemade.
google avatar

Ami S.

Yelp
Simply outstanding! Felt like entering into a hidden oasis - such delicious soups, creative sandwiches made with love and care by the owner Suzy, and we felt like we were in her personal beautiful home being hosted...down to furniture, children's toys, and children's books she had brought from her own home to decorate that were her / her children's own personal favorites! Highly recommend the chicken and tomato soups and the turkey and Brie grilled cheese sandwich.

Andrew U.

Yelp
Excellent grilled cheese and tomato soup! Prices were reasonable for the area. Service was a little slow as it's a one woman shop but if you're not in a hurry it's definitely worth a stop for lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the food and feel of this place ! Casual comfy spot in the heart of Georgetown. Yum! Would go again
google avatar

Moien E.

Yelp
We love this place simply because it's an icon of subtlety and humbleness. This is what many of cafes in US lack. To be about the food and your comfort rather than the creativity in attracting new customers. You'll have to be patient to be served and you'll get what you have asked for, no unwanted extras. Prices are really fair and way below market average and instead of fanciness they fully deliver what you've asked for. So much like what you would experience in Europe.
google avatar

Malu L.

Yelp
Charming place with delicious soups, sandwiches , coffees , salads and smoothies. I ordered the classic combo , grill cheese and tomato soup and coffee ,you choose the cheese of your preference on the grill cheese , a variety of cheeses options. Everything was amazing, the outdoor seatings were very charming.

Yelp
NEVER open when I call or go. Clearly doesn't care about biz. Dont use the times online bc they are NEVER accurate.

abby g.

Yelp
Good food but run by children? During school hours? Curious why their mom wasn't at least helping them because it took awhile and she was just watching them but I can't blame the girls because they are actually kids. Cute place but those poor kids were stressed
google avatar

Yasmine B.

Yelp
My absolute new favorite lunch spot. I have been there several times already with my friend and each time it hits the spot. The vibes are immaculate and the owner is very sweet and is such a hard worker. If it's busy it will be a bit of a wait but the wait is worth it. For the quality, the prices are very reasonable. Definitely recommend!

David R.

Yelp
I've been meaning to leave a review for quite some time. I've been here several times and every time I have an awful experience with the rude owner. The good reviews on this site are very clearly her friends. The bad reviews captured my experience perfectly - a rude owner who treats the customers with contempt. The last time we were there she told us there was a 45 minute wait to get a couple sandwiches. I sympathize with the staffing issues that small business owners are having and if she would have explained it that way I would have been fine with it. Instead she told me that this is a restaurant and that having a 45 minute wait is common place. I replied to her that this is not a sit down restaurant with table service but that it is just a lunch counter and that she can't expect customers to wait for nearly an hour to make a sandwich. Here's the kicker - there wasn't anyone even in the restaurant. No line. Just a couple customers outside. A real head scratcher every time.

Tim H.

Yelp
The turkey was processed and wasn't very good! If your going to charge 13+ for a sandwich I would recommend using a better grade turkey! The service was good and so was the ambiance!
google avatar

Guimazoa G.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Great service! Amazed of the "one woman show" don't know her name, but she was great! Took our order, made the food and did it all with a sample. She Did everything with so much grace and food was really good! Highly recommend this spot. I had the Chicken sandwich and it did not disappoint.
google avatar

KC C.

Yelp
This has to be one of my favorite casual spots that I discovered this year! I was in DC for work and this place happened to be next door and I'm so glad I found it! The sandwiches were all made super fresh and went beyond expectations. They also have wonderful cookies that are bound to have you addicted. Needless to say, each bite made me want to say cheese!
google avatar

Mac C.

Yelp
Highly recommended before our travels to this side of the US. We had the "Chicken #1" and the "Blackies Favorite" with a Banana/Strawberry Fruit smoothie and a Matcha tea. All of it was so delicious and rich with flavor. I had to order another smoothie to go i couldn't resist. It's all delicious and the customer service is warm and welcoming. Nice clean establishment with a real chill vibe, loved my whole experience! Don't think twice come on down here and enjoy some amazing food!

Bob S.

Yelp
This place is terrible. Bad service and bad food. Avoid. The sandwiches are nothing special. Cheap ingredients and they take forever to make by one person. The same person also works the register. So the waiting is ridiculous.
google avatar

Elena C.

Yelp
Rude AF. Came in this morning, 10 minutes after they are supposed to be open, found the door locked, but people on the inside. We politely asked if they are open and the woman unlocked the door. She was holding some sort of meeting with the banker-looking bros. She continued having her meeting and completely ignoring me, like I was invisible. I ended up leaving, I know my money's worth, and this female and her cheese are just not worth it. Hey, hope you get that loan so you can hire someone with customer service skills.
google avatar

Yelp
Maybe the best grilled cheese I've ever had. No lie. Try the tomato soup too, it's to die for. Wonderful atmosphere and the owner is very kind. Can't recommend this place enough!

Yelp
I visited Say Cheese with a friend of mine for lunch and it really hit the spot! We sat outside and had "The Beast", the sloppy joe, and a cup of tomato soup. The food was all tasty and the scenery provided good vibes!

Yelp
Such a cute place and it was even on GWorld! Say cheese is a must visit! This lunch was super affordable and the cafe had great atmosphere. Support small business and visit ASAP!
