Where to Find the Best California Burritos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"The Pac-Man and Lumpia burritos at Sayulita’s take the California burrito formula and incorporates in Filipino ingredients. The former adds tocino and chipotle sauce to the mix while the latter places crispy fried spring rolls alongside the usual carne asada, fries, cheese, crema, and guacamole. The classic California is also worth a try here, but go for the less conventional renditions first. Diners can eat inside the no-frills (but still comfortable) dining room, or take their plates to go." - Candice Woo

Google
We loved everything we ordered!! but what really stood out for me was how well all the sauces and toppings blended together. The flavors were just right, nothing felt too much of the same taste 🩷

Google
unfortunately have to change my review. it seems like 9/10 times my order is wrong and i don’t find out until i’ve gotten home. prices also seem to have gone up. was $50 for 3 burritos with the chile relleno having NO chile at all and my bean burrito tasted like cigarettes because the beans were burnt and flaked with black char probably from scraping the bottom of a pan. they even asked to text photos because “cooks didn’t believe me”. it was inedible. very sad.

Google
This fast-food restaurant markets itself as a Mexican eatery, selling burritos and fries, but the contents of the burritos are not traditional Mexican cuisine—they’re Filipino-inspired dishes. The burritos aren’t cheap, but they are enormous and incredibly tasty. Unless you’re extremely hungry with a huge appetite, it’s nearly impossible to finish an entire burrito in one sitting. The size and calorie count are simply mind-blowing! I ordered the Longanisa burrito, which was filled with a savory-sweet mixture of stir-fried eggs and crumbled pork sausage, along with a generous amount of cheese. It’s the perfect indulgence when you’re craving something rich and high in calories!

Google
Can't go wrong with Volcano tots or any of the specialty menu items. The medium volcano tots can easily feed 2-4 people... I can't imagine the large.

Steph Marco

Google
the burritos were huge and easily 2lbs. lol..they were delicious too - mexican filipino fusion! spam, tocino, longanisa 👍🏼👍🏼 service was good and the place was clean. definitely coming back for more.

Google
Bring your appetite!! These are ginormous, the burritos are great and the salsa is flavorful. Cozy dinning area and a few tables outside to enjoy the weather.

Google
I ordered the Pac-Man Burrito as recommended by the cashier. The bacon is sweet but works really well with the carne asada. Because the burritos are so massive, I split it with my spouse so in theory, we spent less than $10 a person. The sauces were all very tasty. If you like a gradual spice you'll enjoy the spicy habanero sauce. But if you can't handle any spiciness, then just stick with the pico de gallo. The establishment was clean and colorful with plenty of seating. I'll definitely come again and try something new.

Google
Hot Cheeto Carne asada fries are bombalicious..!! Love the meat flavor. Well worth your money! Friendly staff.

Yelp
I'm surprised at the mid ratings this place received because I thought that this place had great food, service, and they were pretty busy when I visited. What we got: - Bolt Fries: We got a medium, and I'm glad we did because the portion sizes here are massive! Between 2 people, we ate it 3x lol. The fries were crispy and good and both the carne asada and longanisa were flavorful and cooked well. My one personal comment would be that I felt it needed a little pico, or some sort of freshness to cut through the meat and fries, but again, that's a personal thing. - Lumpia Burrito: similarly to the fries, this was massive as well and really good. I appreciate that they offered to cut it in half for us upon ordering. Overall, I think this place is great and I would go back. There was a salsa bar which was clean and well stocked with a variety of delicious different hot sauces which ranged from mild to spicy. They also offer complimentary tortilla chips, which is always appreciated. Lastly, the guy taking our order was really nice and attentive.

Yelp
The food at Sayulitas is insane. When we opened up our Togo pac man fries, it was large enough to feed a large family of 5. I'm not exaggerating. I now know why they call it Pac-Man fries, if you're trying to tackle on that behemoth by itself it's made to knock you out no kidding. The tocino burrito would have been enough for just me and my partner, I feel as if I need to pray for having the audacity on taking on more than one dish.. Ambiance: family friendly. Please don't eat here by yourself. You'll need to share the food for the amount you get as a portion.

Yelp
Semi-cold greeting. "Hello ma'am". -silence with a stare. One California burrito (no sour cream)-$20. That's too expensive for a fast food burrito. The portion size is comically big. That being said, I'd rather pay $10 for half the burrito. The flavor was fine. Carne was overcooked, the burrito was heavily reliant on salsa.. I tried the pico and tomatillo-BOTH EXTREMELY watered down. Complimentary chips but they were stale corn chips. Inedible (maybe ok with the watered down salsa). I couldn't get through one. It's almost like I'd only come back with a friend as a joke, like look how huge this burrito is. Anyways, just go somewhere else, even if you are starving just get two burritos from Lolita's or something.

Yelp
Their adobada tacos are a must-try - the flavors are incredibly rich and savory, and the portion size is generous to say the least. The service is always friendly and attentive, and the vibe is lively and fun. Don't miss the daily specials and deals, and be sure to try the aguas frescas and homemade tortilla chips. I've been to plenty of taco shops in SD, but Sayulita's is now my go-to spot. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I love Sayulitas!! Their portions are so big with reasonable pricing, and they even have weekly deals on their instagram if you want to explore more of their options! I got the medium pacman fries which has carne asada and tocino in the fries. The plate was hefty and fries and meat were falling out because they really give you big portions. You can definitely share this with 3-4 people. They have a large menu with classic Mexican food and fusion style Filipino food.

Yelp
I'd recommend trying their Bolt Burrito. It's a fusion of Carne Asada and Pork Longanisa (a Philippine version of sweet sausage). Good balance of meat and fries and creamy sauce. See photos for reference if it's size. This burritos is good for 2 people.

Yelp
Came here multiple times after 10 and they are closed despite saying they are open until 11 on Apple Maps. Update your hours

Yelp
Sayulitas is a San Diego staple. The Mira Mesa location has been my go to spot for a huge burrito for a while now. Every different special burrito I've ordered has been a decadent experience. Their ingredients are top notch. The service and ambiance is what you would expect of a small and local mexican food restaurant. You go up to order, wait for your food, and enjoy the soccer game. Their salsa bar is really good. I recommend the jalapeño and habanero salsas. They are not too spicy but have a refreshing taste without an overwhelming peppery bite. You should also try their chili oil. It is kinda like a chinese chili oil but with a great twist.

Yelp
I bought a sausage breakfast burrito yesterday and I noticed that some of the frijoles weren't cooked all the way and were solid. I thought nothing of it until this morning when I woke up with food poisoning. I really do love coming here, but that experience ruined my whole day. This is the only bad experience I've had, most of the time my experience here is great.

Yelp
A burrito the size of your face? Come to Mira Mesa, San Diego. This little gem of a shop is inconspicuous from outside. It's near Target and behind Menya Ultra Ramen. Parking lot is plentiful. Their specialty menu is on the wall to the right. Then you order with the lady behind the plastic divider. They have $1.79 taco Tuesday deals! They have an extensive menu behind the lady on the wall. You can order whatever you want basically. They probably have it or some kind of combination. I think the Bolt burrito is popular. Lumpia burrito $16.99 - We wanted to try a burrito with lumpia in it. The lumpia could have been crispier. They were soggy as if they didn't even try to fry them. They did give a more generous amount than I expected. I wasn't a fan of this one. Sayulitas burrito $14.99 - This is a burrito I'd get again. Shrimp was good. They have a sauce bar with 3-4 different sauces. You can get a free fountain soda for checking in on Yelp, but the soda tastes bad. I feel sorry for people who pay for it. They charge $0.85 for using a credit card. They also charge for cilantro and onions. You can even add Hot Cheetos to your food!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Mexican food with huge portions! When I saw the price of the burrito was $17 I thought it was wildly over priced. But when I saw the size of the burrito (huge!!!) I thought it was actually a great price! You are impressive if you can eat the whole thing in one sitting, I recommend splitting it into 2 meals and you will be very satisfied. I got our food to go so I did not experience in the service or ambiance. Highly recommend, we will be back

Yelp
Great value given portion size. We ordered online and came back for quick pickup. Someone mentioned in a different review that there is free chips and salsa, but we did not get any for the takeout. The California burrito satisfied a craving (french fries inside a burrito???), although I wish the tortillo was browned. I ordered the 3-taco plate. The fish taco included a VERY generous portion of fish, more fish than I have ever seen on a taco. The carnitas were juicy and tender. The al pastor was dry, and I am used to a little pineapple or sweetness in al pastor tacos; that was not present in this version. This is a good restaurant to visit if you are in the area and in the mood for Mexican food. Perhaps next time I should try one of their fusion burritos to see if that stands out.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
Huge portions at a fair price! They are also located in a plaza with plenty of parking! The burritos are thicker and longer than my forearm. We asked our burrito to be cut up into 4 and each piece was big enough for each person to be satisfied. I would say 1 burrito here is like 2 burritos somewhere else. They also have fun combinations/fusions. We tried the lumpia burrito and we liked it - will try other items next time!
google avatar

Dana C.

Yelp
Awh man...my first time trying Sayulita's and the burrito was pretty good. Until I found a hair... I'd be okay not coming back until the sanitation is better. After eating and cleaning up, there was so much hair in the bag!

Yelp
Really good Mexican-Filipino fusion restaurant in Mira Mesa. Have been twice now and so far tried the hot cheeto burrito, Pac-Man fries, and bomba burrito. So the bomba burrito is made up of 2 tortillas and filled with al pastor, 2 rolled tacos, bacon, guacamole, sour cream, chipotle sauce, hot cheetos, and fries. It was a GIGANTIC burrito slightly larger than our 13 pound cat. Would not order again because it's a bit dry and gratuitous, but it was fun for the bit. I split it with my boyfriend and we had it in 4 separate meals. However, I would recommend the hot cheeto burrito and the Pac-Man fries. The crispy tosino on top of regular carne asada fries provides such a nice break in texture. Also, love the cheese sauce in the hot cheeto burrito; it's a warm cheesy compliment to the crunchy hot cheetos in the burrito. Not the best Mexican food I've had but really great creativity. Will for sure be coming back!
google avatar

Marissa G.

Yelp
Lumpia burrito 10/10 This burrito was huge and delicious! You can't really see the lumpia in the picture but they were in there. The fries were just ok. The hot Cheetos were stale so it really ruined it. Wouldn't get those again
google avatar

Myton L.

Yelp
I got the California burrito and it's a monster of a burrito in size and weight but not the biggest one they have. This did not disappoint and would definitely try the specialty burritos. Update: Bacon wrapped burrito was really good. I also tried the Spamsilog burrito which was really tasty and definitely love that one.
google avatar

Kimberly N.

Yelp
Holy smokes! My burrito was massive. It will take me me 3 meals to finish it. I got a California burrito. I wish the fries were crispier. Overall, solid burrito

Darlene J.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I crave this spot multiple times a month but definitely only come at least once a month because the burritos are massive! We attempted to share one and it kind of fell apart, so I definitely recommend just purchasing your own and saving the rest for the next day or having it for two meals instead of one! Whatever you do not cut them in half! go to the bolt burrito because we love Filipino food and the longonisa is delicious! I think one of my favorite things about this restaurant is the hot sauce! They have so many different kinds even creamy ones, but my favorite is extra extra spicy habanero sauce! I would definitely not eat this if you are not into spicy food maybe settle for the creamy green cilantro!
google avatar

Wesley W.

Yelp
The fries are so good at this place, plus they put longanisa in em? GG. Meat selection is fire, what a good way to do fusion
google avatar

Chel S.

Yelp
Generous portions at a great price point at this restaurant. The burritos here are nothing short of astonishing - they're as large as a newborn baby. The wide range of salsas available adds the option of DIYing different flavors to each bite. The service is fast... even when busy. I'm always in and out in no time. Atmosphere is chill, there's no loud music but occasionally there's games on the TV. Also, they have daily specials which encourages you to explore their menu and save a few bucks. Don't miss out on their bionic fries, asada fries, and Cali burrito. Parking is good as it is in the shopping center shared w Hobby Lobby and Target.
google avatar

Yelp
Sayulitas restaurant is SOOO tasty. We're all about flavor and this place has it. The bacon wrapped burrito is SO good every time.. it's a favorite....the size is huge, flavors are awesome, chipotle sauce, obviously the bacon are delicious! We didn't get the carne asada but swapped for grilled chicken and it's just as good! Their other food is very tasty too. Thankful for the extra sauce as well. Definitely a go- to place for Mexican food.

Yelp
We had a long drive back to Los Angeles after visiting family in San Diego and we were craving a good breakfast burrito. I've been hearing about Sayulitas from a few friends, so we decided to give them a try. We ordered a bacon breakfast burrito and a carne Asada breakfast burrito. Our food was ready within 5 minutes and when I say these burritos were huge, I'm not exaggerating. 2 burritos easily fed 2 adults and 3 kids. Each burrito was packed full with eggs, cheese, meat, potatoes, and beans. They were delicious on their own, but the salsas really hit the spot. Safe to say we will be back!
google avatar

Selena L.

Yelp
Huge portions and delicious food for cheap! We had a large group to-go order for an athletic team, and they did a great job handling all the orders. We were quite happy with the food, which was flavorful and well worth the price.

Joshua S.

Yelp
On the other when ordering my pregnant wife her favorite tostadas from this place, they gave us this when I asked for a lot of green sauce for her cravings. We love you guys, and I promise I didn't touch it!!!!
google avatar

Kayiona G.

Yelp
THIS MEXICAN PLACE HAS THE BIGGEST BURRITOS I HAVE EVER SEEN. I ordered the california burrito and it was stuffed with the carne asada meat. My friend got the carnitas mini tacos and enjoyed them. The service is super fast and I love all the decoration inside. I would definitely come back. Whenever I am craving mexican food, this will be my go to place.
google avatar

Elyssa A.

Yelp
I ordered the 3 mini tacos with carne Asada, only cilantro and onions. It was so good! I have been searching for a place that makes them like this. The asada was great, no fat. And the tortillas were perfect, didn't fall apart and were very soft. 10/10
google avatar

Lex F.

Yelp
I got tacos, (tried pollo asada and carne asada). The prices and portions are great, and the salsas taste good, but the meat in the tacos did not. The tacos were very dry. The pickled jalapeños and carrots apparently cost money -- I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that charges (five dollars!) for a side of pickles that are usually free. The packaging is also styrofoam. Giving two stars for the prices of the tacos
google avatar

Ruby R.

Yelp
I was craving some Huevos c Chorizo for over a week now. Sayulitas did not disappoint! Huge, delicious, portion. I requested the add of papas. Huevos and chorizo cooked just right--not overly greasy, perfectly spiced and to top it off--I have to say--their rice was just as good as mine. Beans--likewise. I usually come here for the Spamislog Burro--that's my fave. Has the perfect mix of spam, rice, and sour cream. Service is always good. Place was packed on this midday Sunday. If you haven't come here, you're missing out! Super tasty fusion of Mexican and Filipino food.
google avatar

Jelarzhel A.

Yelp
The Bionic Burritos and carne asada fries are really good. The burritos are huge, good for at least three people! The carne asada fries so good and packed with a lot of meat, avocado, cheese and sauce! Service is good! Ambiance is Ok, clean and nice!
google avatar

Cari A.

Yelp
Sayultitas is a casual spot to get Mexican food in Mira Mesa. It is conveniently located near Target. Pros: -free parking -indoor seating and limited outdoor seating -huge servings! I wish I could have weighed my burrito and tots. They were heavy! -tasty food -self serve sauce/ salsa bar -free Drink with Yelp check in Cons: -none

Danielle B.

Yelp
This place is our go-to! We've gotten the bacon burrito, the California burrito, and three bean cheese rice sour cream burrito. None of them have disappointed! We love this place.

Boris M.

Yelp
The food was amazing!!! the service was good. It took a little bit long to get the burrito done, but it was worth the waiting. The place was kind of small, but it was nice and clean.

Worst D.

Yelp
Too bad they started to cut the cost on the ingredients. The Salichichon burrito is supposed to have polish sausage and it used to be a whole sausage in each burrito. I ordered one today and it is now just cut up hotdogs. Definitely not the taste of a polish and the diameter is a dead give away. It was still tasty but they should update the menu if this is the case, otherwise it's like false advertising.
google avatar

Han L.

Yelp
The burrito is big, but it doesn't really matter because it's not edible. I got a super burrito, but the meat was so salty and low quality that I had to throw it away.
google avatar

PatMan F.

Yelp
The bones from the chicken quesadilla didn't bother me as much as the pieces of plastic inside each slice. I tried spitting them out but needed up ingesting the smaller ones. Be careful when eating from here. Especially children.
google avatar

Laura J.

Yelp
I ordered a California burrito with guac through DoorDash and it came in around 15-20 minute. The burrito was still piping hot when it came and it was humongous! It is one of the largest burrittos I have ever gotten/seen. The meat was nice and tender and the fries were both crunchy and soft. There were a lot of different textures and it tasted delicious. I just wish there were more salsa or sour cream since it did get a little dry towards the end and the burrito was a little too salty for me. But overall, this was a delicious burritto that would satisfy any cravings.

Paul S.

Yelp
I ordered Sayulitas on Uber eats so I won't write about the store or service. Their menu is huge! I am not sure about the name anymore but I took their California Burrito and their Loaded fries like I will take at other Mexican restaurant. Their quantity are huge ! You definitely have it for your money. Taste very good as well. I will order from there again.
google avatar

Teresa L.

Yelp
Absolutely love the burritos here! We got the bacon wrapped burrito and the longonisa burrito and loved them both. Very very massive burritos and absolutely loved how it tasted! Would definitely be back.
google avatar

Tommie Z.

Yelp
Heard about this place for a minute, I took a trip up Mira Mesa to try them out. They are know for there specialty burritos. They have a dedicated menu for their specialty burritos & etc I will say, don't eat for three days before you come here cause you won't eat after a month Yes, they do have their regular menu up, if your afraid to try the specialty menu. Let me take a bite of mine !!!
google avatar

Chanel P.

Yelp
I wanted to try my first California Burrito, and I was not disappointed! First of all, it was ginormous. I split it with my husband, and it was more than enough for both of us. Second, the carne asada inside was deliciously crispy. I would definitely order this again. We also tried some Bolt fries (Carne Asada, Longanisa, Guacamole, Sour Cream, Cheese, Chipotle Sauce, & Fries). These, we weren't really a fan of. I think there was just too much going on. We ordered the smaller portion, and it was still huge. We barely made a dent in it. The service was quick, and it was easy to order at the counter. The restaurant is small, but there is enough seating (cute wooden chairs, by the way). We'll probably be back, but now we know that one burrito will suffice!
google avatar

Nachiket N.

Yelp
El Patron is my go-to place for Mexican food, but I wanted to give this place a try because I had read good reviews about their vegetarian burrito. Their closing time was 10pm as per their website, so I placed an online order at 9.30pm with a pick up time of 9.50pm. I got there at 9.45pm only to be told brusquely by the lady at the counter that they were closed. When I mentioned that I had ordered online and showed her the confirmation, she told me that the kitchen staff had turned off the grill and would not be able to take the order. She cancelled my order and I got my money refunded in the end. All in all, not a pleasant experience with some unprofessional staff. I'll probably be sticking with El Patron for my Mexican food fix.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Hits the spot everytime. Tacos are amazing and are topped with more than you expect. Tortas are delicious and come with a side of fries. Their salsa verde is top notch paired with anything. Restaurant itself is nice and the staff have always been kind and respectful. Service all around is pleasant and i have yet to have a bad experience.

Annie N.

Yelp
We got the nachos , cheese quesadilla and egg and cheese burrito and everything was BOMB! The quality is amazing, tortillas are soft, meat is seasoned nicely and the chips are thick. Great portion sizes, they are huge! The green and red hot sauce are both spicy but flavorful. Definitely going back!!
google avatar

Julie Juls N.

Yelp
PAC man tater tots are hella good. Massive portions. We ordered to go, everything was very good and very fulfilling. Definitely needed a Mexican Coke to chase all the grease.
google avatar

Allan S.

Yelp
Great concoctions of Mexican inspiration but more if you're in the mood for something different. Haven't had anything that didn't taste good.

MARK L.

Yelp
Big tasty burritos with a selection that is not the usual fair. This is my go to Mexican spot.

Tama F.

Yelp
Food was bomb and huge portions. The fusion they have is pretty interesting so will definitely try more food on their menu.
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
Md. Gyros Fries... Definitely not what I expected. It was good but not great. The gyros were just way over cooked.
google avatar

Carlos H.

Yelp
This feels like a regular Mexican taqueria until you notice all the Filipino and Asian add-ons you can add to the menu. The burritos are HUGE and delicious. I loved the Bolt Burrito which came with Carne Asada, Longanisa, and french fries. It's loaded. It's not the best food ever, but it is delicious and simple. Don't miss their daily special deals and salsa bar, they don't really point it out when you come in. It was not possible for me to finish in one setting, but that's ok. I feel like this food would be good drunk eats. It should be open later, I wonder if it was before the pandemic. I feel like this concept could kill it in Northern California, especially in Daly City. Regardless, it's an interested take in fusion food. I've had Senor Sisig before in SF, but Senor Sisig is such a different kind of product that it doesn't feel like a Mexican restaurant. It's a different story with Sayulitas and to be honest I think there is a place for both impressions in this world. I want to try more things in the future. Recommend!
