Scarlet Hotel | Best places to stay in Cornwall

"Clinging to the cliff in Mawgan Porth, this glamorous, 37-room luxury hotel ticks all the boxes: golden sand and surf, stunning eco-friendly glass-fronted architecture, great seasonal food, interesting wines, and a convenient location near Newquay airport. The Scarlet’s crowning glory, though, is its Ayurvedic spa with tented treatment rooms, swinging relaxation pods, and log-fired outdoor hot tubs. As well as a cloister garden and yoga by the reed pool, the spa can organise wild swimming in a nearby lagoon and Nordic walking. All rooms have ocean views and outside space. " - Matthew Roach

Stayed at The Scarlett for their Christmas break package in 2025. Have stayed on four previous occasions since around 2011. Seen the hotel evolve and grow in positive directions. This was our best stay yet for many reasons, in summary; * the food has got even better (it was good before) the plant based options were incredible and not an afterthought. Although their meat and fish ethical sourcing policy is very high. For example local trout not salmon on Christmas Day! * the drinks were always the slightly disappointing part, from an ethical standpoint. But not this time, they have so many local spirits, interesting cocktails, sustainable soft options, herbal tea included. * the staff training and quality has gone up a level since our last visit. Not that it was bad in any way. * the hotel has had a refresh including the gardens. Love the extra hot tubs spaces. * spa was an amazing and relaxing as always. * the extra bits for Christmas were well thought through and perfectly executed. Eg reusable crackers make from the dining halls old curtains! In summary if you want an adult only, relaxing and decedent break, in a stunning setting, with the most ethical food and drinks provision I have seen in any hotel, book The Scarlett.

Zen, relaxing calm break. The staff were incredibly attentive. Breakfast was an event … we spent two hours over breakfast. Loved the way breakfast wasn’t buffet. Breakfast was very very good. Getting in the sea for a swim in the morning or evening was stunning with the sun setting or rising. The waves brought extra energy. Fantastic cliff top walks. Being very picky … the sauna is far too cool. It was 60c max!! The hot tubs are not included in your stay so have to be booked and paid for separately. We think some should be for residents and be included. This is a meandering hotel and way funding could be a lot better. Overall, an exceptional hotel and experience and would fully recommend.

Booked a 2 night stay for an anniversary treat for my wife. We had little treats throw in throughout our stay for our special occasion which was a really nice touch. Staff were brilliant, breakfast was lovely and the 3 course dinner was stunning. ||A very special place and worth the price tag. Will definitely come back

We had an excellent stay for our Honeymoon. The reception staff were incredible Daisy in particular helped us over and over. The food was Michelin worthy and we enjoyed the somilier Nathan’s choice of local wines. The spa itself is dreamy. The treatment rooms are where this spa comes into its own it was an exceptional experience. We loved the facial and the relax rooms have some thoughtful lighting. The pond is an absolute must do for all visitors and you may see newts and the snake if you’re lucky! We recommend the beach too, there are rock pools with fish in them, waterfalls and surfing is good too. You can hire a board for £5 from Bettys. Overall the hotel is spotlessly clean.

A hotel designed to be indulgent, and relaxing. Attentive service. Excellent food and drink options making the most of the counties produce. The hotel itself is beautifully designed and has several areas to relax and spend time together. The spa is lovely and the massage I had was fantastic. The cost is quite high, but for a self indulgent trip I don’t regret.

Our second stay here and we loved it just as much as the first time. The hotel staff were all so welcoming, always there when needed. The food both breakfast and dinner was always consistently high quality with plenty of variety. The room made the most of the views as do the top spa facilities. We really did not want to leave and can't wait to return. This hotel is far better than many 5 star hotels we've stayed.

We had a fabulous day here in September(day spa including a treatment & afternoon tea). Peaceful, calm and relaxing. Indoor pool and outdoor pool (a little chilly but invigorating!) Hot tubs overlooking Mawgan Porth beach. Excellent afternoon tea-all delightful! Really friendly, happy staff.

Google
The location and views are unbeatable, the food is excellent. The rooms show signs of aging and are not that clean (dusty chairs, streaky glass, tired towels). The sauna wasn't working properly but at no point did anyone inform us. They use web based check in and out which saves them staffing costs but really reduces the quality of the service.

Yelp
The Scarlet hotel claims to be a place of Serenity and Calm; well that certainly hasn't been my recent customer service experience!! I would recommend if you or any member of your family are suffering from an advanced/ terminal CANCER diagnosis or any other serious illness , then DO NOT think about booking this hotel! I purchased a spa voucher costing £250 for my parents as a Christmas present which they went ahead and booked a room for the night in June 2025 total payment of £474 (deposit £250) to accompany their spa present. In April of this year my dad got diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer ( now terminal) which he has now just begun chemotherapy, making him extremely immunocomprimised and therefore unable to go for his visit to the Scarlet. He has already been so sick much to the distress of us all as any family having gone through this would understand. I then decided to call the hotel to discuss the situation to be told : A) I would have to pay an extenstion for the voucher if it was not used by June B) After talking to one of the collagues at the Scarlet for 20-25 minutes , her going back three times to her Manager to discuss the circumstances and telling me : 1) I couldn't deal with the room booking as it was my sick dad that had made the booking and therefore he would have to email them to authorize permission for me to deal with the booking 2) When he made the booking he was informed that the booking wasn't refundable and it wouldn't be company policy to be able to do a refund in any circumstance for the 50 % deposit that is being held by the hotel and that if they wanted to reschedule the visit of their stay ot would have to be done within the next 6 months, despite having informed them that my dad has to go through 6 sessions of chemotherapy every 3 weeks for the next 6 months... and who knows at this point whether he'll even be alive after this time never mind going to a spa when this 'future booking needs to be made!' So in total that is currently £500 that the hotel has and they want me to pay further for an extension for the voucher!! This has been a truly distressing and disgraceful experience with the Scarlet hotel clearly having absolutely NO consideration for what families/ people might be going through at such an extremely difficult time, all for the interest of making financial profit , it really is TRULY saddening :-(

Yelp
Awful experience, my wife and I picked up food poisoning 2 days into a 3 day honeymoon trip. We had not left the hotel for more than a couple of hours, and did not consume food anywhere else. The hotel 'investigated' but concluded it wasn't their fault as no one else reported being sick. They have offered zero compensation. We pointed out it would only take one person to have touched something and not washed their hands for only us to be sick but they said as they couldn't check if this had happened they would not compensate for it. The food in general was not of the quality I would expect from a hotel of this standard. We had a hot tub booking and Rhassoul spa experience both of which started well after the prebooked time. No one let us know they were running late or offered any apology. Beautiful location but recommend you stay elsewhere.

Yelp
I first heard about this hotel when it first opened a couple of years ago through the sunday times, and couldn't wait to go so treated my girlfriend to a long weekend, we were so impressed we ended up going back the following year for my birthday! "So what's all the fuss about?" i hear you say, "isn't it just another hotel?". No it's not, in fact it is quite the opposite, it's the first 5star eco hotel, with it's own spa, boutique type bedrooms, 2 pools and a fantastic restaurant. A weekend away here is like no other... It's quiet and remote, where no phone signals will be bothering you, yet there is Internet in your room if you desperately needed to contact work. The hotel has many different types of room on offer but the majority are "just right", which if your not fussed overtly about the size of your room is perfect, and every single room offers a view of the sea and a form of outdoor space. The Hotel is split between many levels being on a hill side, and aside from the beautiful bedrooms, there is many rooms to hide away in with a book, but my favourite by far is the library with an open fire in the winter months and a pool table. There is a lovely bar area over looking the restaurant, and the food is superb, taking as much from it's local surroundings as possible. If sitting inside reading a book doesn't tickle your fancy then a mere 100 meter walk will land you straight onto the beach or hill top walks of which the hotel provides maps for. The Spa area of the hotel is also not to be missed. There are some fantastic treatments on offer, including body massages and mud rubs, but the spa area also includes an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, where the water is filter through weeds and plants and deep relaxation rooms. However a must thing do do are the wood fired hot tubes, perched on the edge of the cliff over looking the beach and sea. They will set you back £15 for 30 mins but it is completely worth it, and champaign is optional! Outside of the hotel there is a small village, including a pub and a fish and chip shop, and a bus stop where buses running to Padstow and Newquay run every half an hour and are relatively cheap! If your looking for a place to relax, unwind and forget about your troubles then i don't think there is anywhere better in the UK. A must try if your in the area or you want to get away!

Yelp
This is an attractive hotel with an excellent location on the coastal path. It is a lovely building, sprawling across many floors on the hill. However, it is let down by trying too hard to appear to be a spa haven, rather than creating a place for real people, as well as some facilities issues. It claims to have no reception, although in practice there is one, just with the desk hidden behind a wall in a cubby hole. They also claim to have mandatory valet parking, except this doesn't work in practice. Inevitably, not all guests return their keys when they use their car mid-stay, resulting in cars getting blocked in and the hotel staff being utterly powerless to fix it. This meant we had to squeeze six people into one car after a 11 mile hike along the coast. The hotel gives the illusion of efficiency and competence, of having everything on hand, but falls down when it comes to delivery. This is a theme. In terms of facilities, I was surprised that there was no actual fitness provision aside from the tiny yoga room and small pool. When trying to check out, we found the lift was broken, so we had to carry all our bags up several floors. Most annoyingly, however, on the second day we were there, the fire door leading to the garden broke, trapping me in the garden after I'd been for a run. The call button didn't work, and I had to re-enter through the restaurant, sweaty after a morning run, disturbing other guests' breakfast. Amusingly, the alternative door the duty manager told me I could have used to get back in proved to only open from the inside and locked us out the following morning. We later saw dog walkers and other guests get locked out by the same door. It is definitely not a place for anyone who might like to enjoy Cornish sunrises or early morning walks! In the room, the bathroom and bedroom were open plan, including the lavatory/shower cubicle (an all-in-one installation). It was impossible to get up in the night to use the loo or get a drink of water without disturbing one's partner, and meant that there was very little privacy to use the loo. Again, the hotel puts style over substance. The restaurant, which is open to anyone who wants to book, does pretty good food. The pecan pie was yummy! However, the root vegetable tart was unnecessarily deconstructed, with a much over-salted topping, and the Welsh rarebit at breakfast had an unpleasant texture (finely diced fried egg white under the cheese) and the mustard atop it was overwhelming. They also suffer from "food on boards" syndrome. Plus the food is surprisingly unhealthy. It's a real challenge to get more than a single vegetable portion over a three-course dinner, or much fruit (unless one very much likes Braeburn apples, which are displayed on various plates around the hotel). I have stayed at other hotels in Cornwall with similar views and facilities that offer a better experience, but if you want to be in this particular area and are happy to take the hotel's promises with a pinch of salt, you could do far worse.

Yelp
When it was my wife's 30th birthday I looked around for the best spa hotel I could find in the south west. While there were a few top quality hotels out there, the Scarlet Hotel looked something really special. As it had just opened I had limited reviews to go on I took the plunge (pardon the pun). The whole place has such a relaxing feel to it and was exactly what I was looking for. You leave your car at the door and you really feel you've left it behind. There isn't a reception, the staff just meet you in an open area at the entrance and you take a seat as they book you in. As you take in the surroundings the whole place feels open and light. There's lots of glass and light flows through the whole place. The staff really gave you a sense they were proud of the place and the service levels were second to none. They all dress in very informal outfits and it gives you the confidence to relax and feel you can dress down as you chill out. The location is amazing, overlooking Mawgan Porth bay which has a beautiful beach. It's a short, although steep walk down and while close you do feel you're in quiet surroundings. The food was brilliant, we sat in the sunshine over looking the beach taking in the rays and gorgeous food. We dined in the restaurant for breakfast and evening meal twice and there was a great range with the menu changing each day. My wife had two treatments while there and she thoroughly enjoyed them. The room itself had a beautiful view, with floor to ceiling windows and a small balcony. It was all open plan with the bathroom behind the bed, while that sounds weird it worked really well. The hotel sells itself as an eco hotel which is a nice concept the only problem for me was the lack of air conditioning. The bedroom got extremely hot and I struggled to sleep as there was a wedding party staying at the hotel and with the window open we got a lot of their noise. It certainly wouldn't put me off going back, I doubt we'll be that lucky to have such good weather and unlucky to have that noise in one visit again.
