Yelp
Okay, so once a year, me and my High Tea Ladies Club embark on a trek around the Philadelphia area in search of a restaurant that will please women from different backgrounds with different tastes. It's not easy, let me tell you. (You know how we women are, "I can only eat red meat on a Saturday." "Is that GMO free?" Has the livestock been ethically raised?" "Can you please split the check 15 different ways?") So to please all of the various tastes in our group is a miracle. Scott Conant's Scarpetta restaurant in Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia rose to the challenge.
First of all, we were seated upstairs at a corner table overlooking Rittenhouse Square. (It had to be the best damn view in the restaurant!)
Our waiter was fab-u-lous! Like I said, considering the fact that we had quite a large party, he was Johnny-On-It! Let me tell you, not only was he extremely patient with all of the various special requests, he made superb recommendations. First up, a bread basket from heaven! When I say that the breads were awesome, they were awesome. The vegetable Stromboli was bomb-diggity. The citrus olive oil was great, as well as the eggplant dip, mascarpone butter and homemade focaccia. However, I saved my favorite for last... Stromboli with soppresata and provolone... amaz-balls! (I kind of hogged up that bread and kept to myself. Since I got to the table early, I scarfed most of it down before the rest of our party arrived. Hee-hee!)
Since there were so many of us, here's just a sample of what we ordered:
DUCK & FOIE GRAS RAVIOLI Marsala reduction
Famous Scarpetta Spaghetti with tomato and basil
PAPPARDELLE with braised rabbit & porcini 25
BRAISED SHORT RIBS OF BEEF with vegetable & farro risotto
BRAISED OCTOPUS with artichoke, celery & charred scallion
WILD STRIPED BASS with brussels sprouts, pancetta, caper & pepperoncino jus
I personally had the Wild Striped Bass and it was expertly prepared. My only complaint is that I'm used to being served a "starch" (E.g., Potato or rice, etc...) with my meal and my entrée was served without one. I know that's old fashioned, but it's what I expect. And no one was really sharing their plates that evening, so I didn't really get to sample anyone else's food. However, no one, and I mean no one complained about their meals at all! That is a rare feat and accomplishment for this group. And I never usually order desserts, but they had a Flourless Chocolate Cake with Caramel Gelato and Chocolate toile that I ordered and I was ready to dropkick my ancestors back to wherever they came from for that dessert. OMG was that good! I still dream about it. Awwww shucks! I miss it so much!
Anyway, if you happen to be in or near Rittenhouse Square, run to Scarpetta. As a matter of fact, even if you're not near Rittenhouse Square, I think it's worth a trip.
