"This classic soul food spot moved from Oakland to San Leandro in 2018, and regulars will tell you that not much has changed. The wings, in particular, remain extra-large, impeccably seasoned, and fried with the tips attached." - Janelle Bitker, Luke Tsai

Shout out to Scends Restaurant in San Leandro! My Mom's closest friend passed a couple of weeks ago and the family was struggling to figure out how to feed the crowd after the service. They reached out and asked for recommendations and unfortunately, we didn't have any but my Mom did suggest a few items be included because the dearly departed enjoyed soul food. Fast forward to the repast and we find out the family was able to be connected to SCENDS RESTAURANT from San Leandro. They catered the repast to a degree- the fried and baked chicken was purchased elsewhere as requested by my Mom as the dearly departed one loved this particular fried chicken. However, SCENDS came through with everything else and when I tell you that EVERYONE raved about how flavorful and tasty this food was.....baby- we had to go plates to take home...that's how much food was provided and how good it was. MY REVIEW: Keep in mind I am a semi-pescatarian/mostly vegetarian so there were not a lot of options for me BUT I made sure to include feedback from other meat eaters. MAC N' CHEESE 7.5/10 - TBH, I'm not a huge mac and cheese fan (judge your mama) BUT this was so dang good. A good little brown crisp on the edges- creamy where it needed to be and cheesy for the rest. GREENS 10/10-Best thing on most people's plates.... after the fact, I found out they seasoned them with turkey meat but it wasn't present in the greens so you may want to ask before consuming. BUT I just pretended I didn't know and they were GREAT! CORNBREAD: Gave me cake texture- slightly sweet...a little crumbly...could use more butter. And lastly the finale was the PEACH COBBLER (they did serve and offer cake desserts but I'm not a fan and most people were like MEH) BABY- it was served warm and gooey and sticky and nutmeg heavy and all the things it needed to be. CASE CLOSED. Read the menu in my pics- and go see them and judge for yourself!

Google
None of their size had flavor. I’ll order yams, mac & cheese and greens. Well, I’m a take it back the grill mac & cheese flavor, but it wasn’t cheesy and black pepper. The chicken isn’t done all the way it’s still red in the middle and it last flavor.

Google
If comfort had a flavor, it would be found in a slow-cooked plate of oxtail with rice and gravy. This dish is a masterclass in depth, richness, and soul. I’d rate it 10/10 and would forget my name again for this plate. How I wish we had the same restaurant in Canada. Highly recommended!

Google
They're DELICIOUS! Everything I've ever ordered is DELICIOUS! From the turkey wings, collard greens, mac & cheese, peach cobbler, it was out-of-sight! And I'm not a big soul-food eater, but they're at the TOP of their game when it comes to this home-style of cooking. It's ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS.

Best I've had in Cali since leaving my hometwn Louisiana. Noooobody in cali has gotten this close. Waitress was plesent, cook was moving. They were so polite. I was glad to wait patiently. Great atmosphere. I walked in an swear it smelled and felt like I had come home from school on a friday an my mom was n the kitchen throwin down. And gave me everything i needed + REAL HOT SAUCE🥰Bless yall All i can say is this was GREAT! 👌

Google
Okay, I dropped my stars. I was feeling for some turkey wings last week.. The mac and cheese was blan and dry (not the picture below). The yams were too sweet, and the greens were too salty and no flavor.. no smoked turkey added. I'm assuming they had a chefs change because the consistency is not there like before.. Turkey wings was seasoned well. Cakes are over priced for a slice, $7.00. 4% on credit card users and food was not even a 4 out of 10. however I must say they need to get a better cash register system instead of using a calculator..It can slow the business down waiting for them to add up the total, when it can be entered on the register.. I hope they get someone who know how to real cook good mac and cheese and stop using cheap cheese that doesn't melt..

I had Dion’s Delight (2 whole wings and 1 pork chop, with lemon pepper added to the wings). The wings were cooked perfectly but the pork chop was a little bit dry. The Cole slaw was tasty, with a vinaigrette dressing.

I was in town for a short trip, and I came across Scends by chance, and I'm so glad I did. The staff was so welcoming as soon as i walked in, gave honest recommendations, and the portion sizes were hearty! This was good Ole home cooking and I will be back next time I'm in town!

Yelp
Good food, good pleasant service, nice location in San Leandro. They have good treats also.

Yelp
Love this place. Reminds me of eating in my momma kitchen. Atmosphere: casual. Food is great Staff are friendly, attentive and knowledgeable

Yelp
Came in here a few nights ago and picked up some fried catfish & lemon pepper wings. The 6 piece catfish I got was fried to perfection and had good flavor. Good size pieces too. The coleslaw that came with fish was one of the better ones. The lemon pepper wings was okay, not enough flavor and over cooked a little, but still edible. The restaurant look very clean inside and the service was great, friendly!! I will return to try others menu items.

Yelp
For years, I passed this location up and I've always wanted to stop and give them a try. in February my husband and I stopped by and I ordered the fried chicken wing meal with a side of red beans and rice and collards. My husband went with the oxtails over rice and gravy. My honest opinion is that the food lacked salt and seasoning, and I am someone who does not add a lot of salt to my food. The chicken and snapper were cooked to perfection as were the oxtails, but they needed a little bit of salt. I have the same opinion for the sides. Everything is made with love by the hands of hard-working people and I recommend you come and give it a try and form your own opinion.

Yelp
First, the food is great! I have no complaints when it comes to the taste and quality. HOWEVER!!!! If i shell out $44.00 for a short rib dinner...i expect to get at least three pieces of meat, but nope!!! For $44.00 freakin' dollars, you get ONE short rib and two measly sides. Never again...i don't care how good the food is NO BUENO

Tru Suntoucha F.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Mediocre food. Long wait but probably because of online and call in orders. It was my first time getting food at this establishment. I got my food to go and when I got home, I discovered that they got my order wrong

King F.

Yelp
I recommend their fish on fresh fish Fridays. I usually get the red snapper There's other dishes like the baked chicken, turkey wings and there's plenty of dessert

Amber N.

Yelp
This place has some of the best soul food in the area! It reminds me of the food I ate growing up and makes me feel at home!! Great service too!

Gloria S.

Yelp
Food was not good at all. OMG the cabbage was just boiled. No flavor at all. Just boiled cabbage. gross! The mac and cheese was horrible. Taste like a kid made it. Boiled noodles with Velveeta cheese. That's exactly what it taste like. This is no where near soul food. This to me is Lazy food. Fried chicken was dried out and the red beans and rice had no flavor. We actually threw away both of our orders. It wasn't like this when they were on San Pablo. This was no where near SOUL FOOD, it looked like SOUL FOOD that's about it. The staff was nice but after spending close to $60, I won't be back. I hope they hire a new cook. This was really bad and sad. Like they didn't even try. Lost our whole family as customers....

Yelp
Recently, a powerful oxtail craving led me to discover this charming gem of a restaurant. Not only did I find a cozy ambiance, but the service was as warm as their delicious oxtail. I opted for the oxtail with red beans & rice and collard greens, and oh my, the oxtail was a symphony of tenderness and flavor. The sides were equally outstanding! Thank you!

Carlo R.

Yelp
I've come here in the past & it was really good! Not so today. The staff was nice but. A young lady, by her own admission forgot my daughters wing order. I didn't realize it till we got all the way home. You know what it's like to deal with a hangry 8yr old?! Smh. The catfish was a rubbery, undercooked disaster. Mac & cheese, & Yams were mediocre at best. The greens were alright, The hushpuppies were the star of the night! I called to let them know about the mishap. A gentleman was very nice & said to come back to get my order. Unfortunately its Saturday night & they wont be open till Wednesday to get my forgotten order.

Yelp
I wanted to take a moment and write a review on this restaurant. We have been trying to make it down and finally made it on the 3rd of the month. It happened to be my dads birthday. He wanted some chicken, black eyed peas, and greens. When we got there it smelled AMAZING outside. The restaurant itself is small. But that's ok , the best places usually are. Service was very attentive. Friendly, and informative. We ordered the ribs and link, with yam and greens 6 piece fish(snapper) with Mac, cabbage, and large rice and gravy. 4 piece chicken wings, black eyed peas, and greens. Let me tell you something! In the car we opened the greens and Boy!!!!! They were so flavorful! Everything was delicious. The one one thing I probably would get was the cabbage. Just because it lacked a little flavor. But, everything else is absolutely 10/10! Hot, crispy, flavorful! If you're looking for some quality soul food, I would definitely recommend this spot! Was so good didn't take any pictures! I will next time, because there will absolutely be a next time!

Chrystal L.

Yelp
Food taste old here will not come back. The prices are to hight to have such bad food.

Rachael H.

Yelp
Food was not that good. Green beans were from a can. Yams were from a can. Yams were watery and green beans were watery. Yams had a weird after taste of alcohol. Maybe vanilla but it was too much like alcohol. Mac and cheese was not good, but decent enough to eat. I got 4 piece wings and it was ok. Really fatty. Will not be eating here again sorry.

Breezy O.

Yelp
Excellent food. I wanted peach cobbler and oh my goodness it was so good. Crust and not overly sweet. I also got some rib tips and Mac and cheese. Rib tips was phenomenal. Well seasoned and the sauce was not overbearing perfectly done. Macaroni and cheese was so so. No real cheese favor but it wasn't salty so it was ok. The collard greens was smoking good. I enjoyed them. They were not overbooked nor were they undercooked. They were just rightMy complaint was the size of the cornbread. Two bites and it was gone. Good taste and texture but small size. Overall a great meal So enjoy

Talia F.

Yelp
Good simple home cooked soul food! Recently moved here from Southern California and been missing all my catfish spots, found this on yelp and boy it did not disappoint, wings and catfish are BOMB, the Mac and cheese is great, and I love how it's nothing fancy just simple you go there to eat and leave feeling like you just had a home cooked meal. Also great service every time I go the girls always take good care of my table. So sweet and very attentive and you can NOT leave without taking one of their amazing desserts. They're seriously all good!!!! I seen a review stating that the food here lacks seasoning, and the cooks don't cook with love or passion, let me tell you that person just woke up on the wrong side of the bed. None of that is factual. Try scends for yourself and you be the judge. The flavor speaks for itself!!! I will be returning with friends and family.

Judith S.

Yelp
WOW!! Just walked by and came to a stop. I ended out coming home with ribs, Cole slaw, baked beans, sweet potatoes, 3 desserts, and everything was superb. I will have to go back in a week when I finish all the left overs.

Sue Ann Y.

Yelp
My husband and I decided to have food delivered from this restaurant because we were both lagging in energy and just wanted food to magically appear at our door, and it did. Both the catfish and the wings were beautifully fried, and we enjoyed the mac and cheese , greens, and black-eyed peas. Our only complaints were that the food was delivered in styrofoam containers and also included one slice of commercial bread in a small plastic bag. Our earth does not need more waste. Really good food, and delivery was very prompt, but I do wish some thought would be given to the environment. Thank you!

Yelp
Another excellent place for authentic soul food. Pretty small inside but getting there early guarantees a good seat. Sweet young lady came by and explained the specials and all other important information we needed to place our orders. Everything sounded good. We placed our orders. Our food was absolutely delicious. We all ordered different items, each of us very satisfied!! Love it when your food is fresh and hot. The cook even took the time to come out and greeted us!! Awesome!! Will make another trip there soon.

Yelp
One of the most difficult aspects of sheltering-in-place is trying to figure out what to cook day to day. It was fun the first week or two, but making the same dishes over and over again got old very quickly. Finding a restaurant that offered food that remained delicious after the drive home (or delivery has been tricky. Many places have wonderful dishes, but they need to be eaten right after they are plated, as the heat from the cooking process is elementary to the taste and texture. In addition, going out to eat too much now is more costly than in the before times (both in terms of money and physical exposure). Better to get enough food for leftovers, to last multiple meals. Thankfully, Scends has been a godsend. I call in my order, drive to the restaurant, where my food is hot and waiting. After I pay and drive home, the food is still hot and the textures hold up. Our current order (mind you, for 2 people) is the Boomer's Appetizer (3 fish, 3 wings, 2 pork chops and 2 sides) and the LD's Delicacy (5 fish, 5 wings and 2 sides). My wife's favorite dishes are the pork chops and the greens, while I rave over the snapper and the mac & cheese. And the fried okra are very snackable: order the large if you're sharing... or maybe not. While I'd love to down all this food in one setting, this is enough for 2 meals for us. Even eating the proteins cold are fine, though some of the sides are better warmed up. Every time I've picked up food here, the staff are very kind and friendly. The one catch is they only accept cash, or be prepared for that. Otherwise, be ready for fried food heaven.

Rae D.

Yelp
Food and Service was great. 12/7/2023 attended repass connected to family members home going service. What can I say, the food was good!!!! Service was fantastic and friendly.

Taniesha L.

Yelp
To be completely honest I am sad I have to give this place 3 stars because the staff was so nice and pleasant and I've been wanting to try this place for the longest after seeing all the positive reviews. We ordered take out which included the following: Fried fish Fried chicken Two mac and cheeses Yams Fries Let me start by saying that I rate a soul-food restaurant based on their sides because that it always my favorite thing to eat. The mac and cheese was horrible! It tasted like they use the powder cheese and added too much water, I did not like it. Second the yams, now I love yams and I felt as though it would be hard to screw up on some yams but this place did. Once I saw the yams I knew it was something off by the coloring and texture, then I tasted them and I just couldn't even finish, WATER! Just water and sugar, a big disappointment. I do not know this place obsession with watery food but it's not good at all. Now the fries were just the average overcooked frozen fries pretty blah. The fried chicken? Let's just say I should of just made it myself and been way more satisfied! Lastly, the fried fish was very good, it was a pretty golden color with the perfect crisp! This is the only item I really enjoyed, plus they give you a lot so you have plenty for left overs. In conclusion, will I ever return? Probably not!

Yelp
I started going to Scends in Emeryville in about 1999. I loved the fried oysters the most but i also liked the gumbo a lot. New Scends in San Leandro has neither. We got fried shrimp/snapper, fried okra, yams, mac-n-cheese, corn bread, hush puppies and ox tails. Shrimp and snapper were exactly what you'd expect; corn meal batter, good (but not "special"). The yams were really really sweet - i liked them. Hush puppies are always good, this was no exception. The ox tails were good, but again, not extraordinary. I did not try mac-n-cheese; my son said it was inedible. The corn bread wasn't bad, but that's the best thing i can say about it. The okra was also pretty good, but didn't stand out. Oh, and my wife/son shared a chicken sandwich. They said it was fine, nothing special. If they never add the gumbo or oysters, I highly doubt I'll go back. But it didn't suck, so if you're in the neighborhood, and in the mood, it's worth trying. Lastly, i know it still pandemic environment, but there's no ambience. My guess is they do about 90% take-out.

Skeeter Z.

Yelp
Family of four orders 10pc fried white fish with coleslaw, fried shrimp and French fries with mac'n'cheese and it's a great friday dinner. We get takeout. The place is clean, people are nice. Can't recommend it enough

David N.

Yelp
Craving Southern-style fish and not really wanting to drive to my beloved Fat Fish in Berkeley, I searched Yelp. I've driven by Scend's, but never gave it much thought. Why was I not thinking? The store used to be in Emeryville and relocated just over a year ago. I loved their Southern home-cooking. I was reared in North Oakland, no not Rockridge or Temescal. I'm a homeboy! Kinda hard to find street parking on E. 14th. I pulled into a nearby strip mall lot about 100 ft away. Surprise, I later found out it's okay to park there. A nice woman greeted me, handed me a menu and told me to find a seat anywhere. Sweet little store with small wooden tables and chairs. Good assortment of condiments, including Crystal Hot Sauce. A bit of a dine-in lunch crowd and a brisk carry out. The staff, which included a pair of sweet Grandmas just busy, chatting, and laughing. Ordered a lunch special of a pork chop, two catfish, and fries. I included a small bowl of greens, which came with hot water cornbread. Sweet tea and Fanta sodas are available, however I had the choice of Diet Pepsi or Coke. My lunch came out hot. So hot I even had to wait a bit for it to cool down. Good thing my iPhone camera eats first! The catfish consisted of two good sized filets fried in a cornbread batter. Delicious with a homemade tarter sauce. Yes, there was relish mixed in. The greens were an excellent side. The simplicity of well-cooked and perfectly seasoned collard greens can never be underestimated. I reckon they were seasoned with just the right amount of cider vinegar, bacon fat, and chicken stock. The thin cut pork chop definitely was dry rubbed with Cajun spices and quickly deep-fried. Yummy with every bite. Crinkled cut fries were crispy outside and hot moist inside. Dusted lightly with Cajun spice too. So stuffed, my darling server wrapped up my cornbread to carry home. I had to just sit for a moment to reflect on what a fine meal I enjoyed. A handsome man came out from the back of the house and was very courteous in asking how my meal was. Of course, turns out he's the owner and chef! Good food at a fair price! Look for me to become the Yelp Duke here.

W. Andre M.

Yelp
The front staff were very nice and they acknowledge you right away when you enter. The staff gets 5 stars on customer service and awareness. I took my order to go. I thought, "Styrofoam" was banned in the Bay Area! I ordered cabbage which was I would give a 4 stars. The yams were okay they get 3 stars. The main entree Catfish was was not catfish. This was not flaky it was rubbery and dry! I was highly disappointed and the fish gets a 0. Oh wait I also ordered prawns. What I received was not prawns they were shrimp and prepared from FROZEN! What a waste and they charge a premium. I could spend my hard earned $ anywhere. After this experience I would never spend a dime at Scend's Restaurant in San Leandro.

Kyshia M.

Yelp
Formerly known in the North Oakland area, I finally made it to their San Leandro relocation. I stopped by here for lunch. They're the only fried snapper sandwich place (that I know of) in the area. And since I'm familiar with their food (frequent diner at their old location) I knew the food would be good. I ordered a snapper burger. Hold the mayo but yes to mustard, lettuce and tomato. They did hold the mayo, but thought my choice would make it dry but once I hook it up how I like, it's actually very messy lol. Instead of mayo, I use tarter sauce and lots of hot sauce, which they provide. I should have had them add cheddar cheese. That would have made my snapper burger even more delicious. It was already hella good. I ate it so fast I had hot sauce dripping everywhere lol. The snapper burger was filling so I didn't need fries or any sides. Overall they'll be seeing me frequently ordering their snapper burgers.

Yelp
First time at Scends. My sister recommended it based on her experience with their former location in Emeryville. We had a good time sitting and waiting (30 minutes) for our food at this Southern style soul food restaurant. Very nice friendly staff and patrons. We each ordered a turkey wing dinner with greens, mac and cheese and one person ordered black-eyed peas and greens as one of the 2 sides. Turkey wings dinner was tasty but when we got home, my sister, who had eaten at the former Emeryville location, was disappointed that rice no longer comes with the Turkey dinner to sop up all the tasty gravy. She had to go out again to a nearby restaurant to buy white rice. Once we had the rice, it was on! Very good food. The greens were the best item. So flavorful. I love mac and cheese and Scends mac and cheese was quite good. It would be better with some onion and more cheese. The peach cobbler was very good and would be even better with less sugar. I would definitely go to Scends again. For faster service I would order ahead. Definitely recommend it.Try it.

Bev F.

Yelp
This was our first time here. A true priceless gem here in the city San Leandro. From the time we walked in service definitely 5 star service. We felt like family. I can't say enough. Portions beyond generous .

Annie B.

Yelp
This place is the Best if you want good soul food, Outside my own and my mother's who is from Mississippi. Scends is really good I give it a 5 star, because you can tell when food is cooked with love and this is, you can also tell when food is cooked fast. not this, only downside its only open 4 days a week Wednesday thru Saturday. love this place I order to go, very small place.

Renee H.

Yelp
Went there yesterday and was quite impressed how clear it was and the service was good. However, I picked up to go the fried breaded shrimp which I thought it was a different kind of shrimp( I could have bought this kind in the store had I known) ,the Mac & cheese was not very tasteful nor cheesy , and the yams were just ok . The 2 star is , for the price I paid, the portions were very small and the quality of the food was NOT that good( in my opinion). A disappointment to me.

Tammie T.

Yelp
Greeted as I walked into restaurant. Kinda small eating area inside and one table outside. Decor wasn't nothing fancy. The catfish wasn't seasoned just fried. What happened my black folk with the seasonings? The collard greens were good with a little kick. Black eyed peas were great. I guess im not a cornbread person but thought it was bland. Cole slaw was alright i had to doctor that up a bit. The crunch cake was tasty. Definitely would go back for the sides and dessert. Come with cash or 4% charge for using credit card.

Maria Ladde Y.

Yelp
I hate to do this review. I am Sitting in here irritated as fuck. But it must be said. I have been a customer of Scends for years, I followed them from. That little whole in the wall on San Pablo. Today I went to get some food...my total was $20.50 I was charged a "sub charge" of $1.75 for using my credit/debit card. WTF? It is bad business to charge the customer a fee to buy their takeout food. It's a bad deal. And fuck whatever system they are using and then passing it off to their customers. I won't come back...period

Kimberly C.

Yelp
I checked in via Yelp and received an on the spot digital coupon for a free order of greens! They were spicy and tender with a piece of cornbread as well. They have a decent list of lunch specials (order before 2pm). We had a fried porchop sandwich with fries and 2 wings and fries. Very well seasoned and cooked to order. They only accept CASH or the CASH APP for payment. There is an ATM on location as well. Call ahead and pick up! Masks required. Friendly older couple filling the orders. Only 2 customers allowed in at a time for pick up. Plenty of parking in front and a lot on the side. This is one of two locations. Get your soul food fix!

Kloyalk K.

Yelp
Customer service was on point ! Very respect and thoughtful of their customers : And they work with what's in your budget . Good plays to go on a daily (Affordable) with fresh cooked food .

Sabrina C.

Yelp
If you love leftovers, this is the restaurant for you! I just placed an order for pick up, I got the 4 piece wing and three sides. Three out of the four pieces of chicken wings were left over, dried to the bone and greasy! They re-fried the older pieces and the meat was grey and mushy.I ordered macaroni and cheese, potato salad and candy yams. The yams were watery and so was the mac and cheese. They both lack salt and seasoning. The potato salad was so old that the boiled eggs were stiff and hard, it also lacked seasoning and salt. The nerve of them to serve leftovers and charge me full price!

Linda H.

Yelp
Picked up a 6 pc Catfish dinner with cabbage and candied yams yesterday! The fish was perfection!! Crispy on the outside with a beautiful consistent golden color, and was hot, succulent and most of all; tasty!! The cabbage upon opening looked as though it would be bland; but they were far from it!! They were well seasoned; yet allowed the cabbage to shine as God intended it!! DELICIOUS!! Now the yams!!! They know how to prepare vegetables!! The yams were not sickeningly sweet; they were sweet, yet again allowed the yam to shine as the beautiful superfood we've been given!! BRAVO SCENDS!!. Wether you're a comfort food seeker, or concerned about your health; you'll be able to find delicious offerings here! I will most definitely be back! Continued success!! NOTE TO MY PEOPLE: Whenever you have an issue with something you've ordered from a restaurant / or any business; give the establishment an opportunity to correct it before bashing and or giving up on them! We're all human, and not infallible! LETS EXTEND GRACE TO OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS! TOGETHER WE STAND; DIVIDED WE FALL! ONE LOVE

Clarice B.

Yelp
Omg..this food is sooooo good! I've ordered it twice in one week! I've tried the pork chops , seasoned perfectly! And huge! The sides delicious just like my grandmama's home cooking! Top notch food!! From now on the only soul food I will ever eat! If you want the best soul food please run don't walk to SCENDS! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR FOOD WITH US!! LOVE LOVE LOVE...

Mai N.

Yelp
Ordered via GrubHub. First time trying Scend's and discovered that they can season some meat! The pork chop, fried shrimp, and fried chicken were good. However, the sides (yams, green beans, red beans & rice) and the fried catfish were VERY bland. Which was surprising. And the cornbread! BLEH! Tasted like a flour cake??

Frank T.

Yelp
We're in the middle of a shelter in place and I ordered a takeout of the Boomer appetizer thinking I wanted to support local business. The food was ready when they said which was the best part. The counter staff seemed not to care about anything. No smile no nothing. The attitude was totally uninvolved. No thank you for your support. Totally blank. The food was okay. But with the negative attitude of the staff, I won't come back.

Melia T.

Yelp
Wary of ordering Soul Food in east Oakland San Leandro area. That being said... turkey wings are yummy. Gravy is good. Vegetables are good. Baked chicken and fried chicken wings good. Yum! Recommendation: rice is a tad overcooked and should be buttered. Macaroni and cheese is a bit watery, would be wonderful if made creamier. And those items are staples so having the best macaroni and cheese and the best rice a gravy takes a restaurant from 4-5 stars easily. Thank you for good food. I will order again.

Deanie R.

Yelp
Food is just as good if not better than that of the previous location The fried chicken is their specialty and is to die for.

Nicole L.

Yelp
Had dinner here after a nice hike at Joaquin Miller. We came across this spot by chance since we were wandering around driving looking for something to eat. What a hidden gem we found. Staff was so accommodating and welcoming like we just walked into a relatives' home. Our two boys shared 4 wings, french fries and mac n cheese. My husband and I shared the JP's which came with 3 wings, 3 fish, 3 prawns, and 2 sides... this was perfect since we wanted to try everything. The fried chicken was perfection. Super juicy with a very thin layer of perfectly battered skin. It was a plus that the staff interacted with our kids and even offered them a basket of little toys to pick from... we tried to decline but they were so sweet and insisted that we take something for them. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
I had never heard of this place, but I was in the neighborhood at a store and saw the sign in the window "soul food", and it was calling my name. I wanted something crispy and fried, so I decided to go with the fish lunch portion with a side of potato salad and Mac n cheese for my daughter. Everything was delicious! Mac n cheese tasted well seasoned with good cheese, the potato salsas was close to the way my mom makes it. Really home made! Service was friendly and helpful. Can't wait to come back and try other menu items

Yelp
I had lunch with a friend today at Scends, and the food and service were both excellent. I ordered 6 pieces of fried snapper with a side of potato salad and corn bread. Everything tasted great, and the fish was fried perfectly. The portions were generous and reasonable priced. The owner, Dion, is a really nice guy, and he would come out and talk to the customers periodically. I ordered the turkey wings in the past, and they are HUGE. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Dude. I am a food person. I am also a customer service critic. And I am telling you...this place checks ALL my boxes for a great experience. Background: We came here for my hubby's birthday on a Saturday night around 7pm. We'd been looking for some good soul food, and couldn't think of any local places that would make the cut. The Space: A bit of a whole in the wall, which doesn't bother me. Small, but quaint. It felt like we were at an Aunty's house. The smell of fried fish and hot sauce included. The Staff: Walked in to a HUGE smile and a big Hello! We had to wait a few for a table, but we didn't mind. Once one opened up they seated us. Then another person came up and said "you guys look cramped here, we set up a special table just for you over here!" So we went and they had a whole little setup specifically for us! From the moment we walked in the door til the time we left, we were treated so kindly! The Food: A++++ Yo. That food was SMACKIN. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Tilapia was buttery and fried hard so it stayed moist. The Mac n cheese was amazing, greens were poppin, yams were delicious, cornbread tender, fries perfectly crisped....honestly the list could go on. ALSO- servings huge. prices great. (under 100 pre-tip for 5 of us! 2 folks shared one plate) I am so happy that my family and I have found a new staple go to soul food spot! Also, they do take out, AND I think they deliver. KACHING! That's a win!

Yelp
After a long day of shopping we decided to stop by and pick up food to go back to San Jose.. i had alittle bit of a wait but it was worth it .. one of the younger ladies there kept asking was I ok or did I want some water which I thought was awesome .. the sweet potatoe pie was soooo good! The fish and sides were good as well., while sitting there waiting I noticed a bunch or door dashers picking up food and I must say I'm glad I dont live closer because I would be in trouble!

Yelp
Wanted a home cooked meal without the mess. Looked it up on Yelp. Pretty close.. meaning I didn't have to travel to Oakland for some soul food. I got the Boomers.. yeah a little greedy but hey, lunch and dinner! Win Win! Fried fish, chicken and pork chops.. I'm thinking everything is gonna have a slight fishy taste.. No, not at all.. All three were seasoned just right. I went for the cabbage, which was lightly seasoned, but I liked that because I could put my own slant on the flavor (hot sauce!). The Mac and cheese was creamy and full of love! Even the cornbread was done right! Everything was right. No complaints. From the foot traffic while waiting, they have a good customer base. I will be visiting them again!

Yelp
First time there, tho I've been curious since I'd heard of their opening. I went there because Sistas Soul Food Kafe was closed...again (when they should have been open...again). The staff was very nice & efficient. Ordered food to go by phone. It was ready on time. So far so good... PROS (will go back especially for these): Prawns Greens (some of the best I've ever had) Corn bread (awesome!) Red beans & rice (screaming!) Fried chicken CONS Not thrilled with the Mac & cheese Fried fish, snapper (very bland & dry) I'll be back to try other items, as well as the hits. I DO recommend going to Scend's.
