Scenic Hotel Punakaiki | Best places to stay in New Zealand

"This solid-looking eco-resort offers a safe harbour from the buffeting winds and raging ocean – and a great launch pad for exploring Paparoa National Park – one of New Zealand’s hidden gems. The rooms are on the Spartan side, but the resort is well-run and within easy striking distance of all the major local attractions such as Pancake Rocks and the Punakaiki Blow Holes. There are superb walking and cycling trails nearby – and e-bikes for hire – plus beautiful bays and beaches to explore. Prices are reasonably high – but you’re paying for glorious isolation, adventure and as much clean air as your lungs can absorb. It’s a 90-minute drive from the nearest town, and 3.5 hours from Christchurch, but the untamed wilderness is on your doorstep. Families with children of all ages are welcome. " - Mark Chipperfield

Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly. Our rooms were very nice and tidy, with a fantastic view of the beach. We were a family group, and the adjoining room was a lovely surprise. We enjoyed cocktails in the bar, followed by a delicious dinner and dessert. We also had breakfast the next morning, which was amazing—every meal we had was absolutely faultless. Our restaurant waiter was very friendly and made us feel truly welcome. We can’t wait to go back and would highly recommend this place to others!

The view was awesome. The room was lovely. A wee bit cold but we worked out that the powerpoint the heater was plugged into didn't work and we changed it. We forgot to tell them before we left. These things happen. There were extra blankets too. ||Loved that there were proper wine glasses in the room. Heaps of coffee, tea etc. It was nice and clean.||The meals were lovely as were the cocktails and canapes. ||We loved our stay.

Visiting the area with my older mum and the hotel was lovely and accommodating to her mobility needs. Beds very comfortable rooms perfect for what we needed. |Dinner was good , portion size was too big for small eaters but tasty, breakfast excellent. Great poached eggs, chef did well. |Location and outlook lovely.

Didn't pre book so got a pretty good walk in rate for a lovely ground floor seaview room. Spacious room, spotlessly clean, really comfortable bed and very cosy all round. The bar upstairs serves pretty good snacks and has amazing views across the Tasman. Staff were lovely and went above and beyond to give me a great room at a very good reate.

Excellent staff who made us feel extremely welcome and cared for despite our late arrivals. They were also kind enough to let us check back in momentarily after having checked out to clean up after my mother took an impromptu dip in the surf after falling face flat on the beach! Some of the rooms themselves are starting to feel somewhat dated (slightly old door hinges, scuff marks etc.) but for a cosy spot right on the beach to spend a night or two on your way up the West Coast, it's just about perfect.

Great location. Room was lacking bowls and forks, and the dinner menu was limited and no microwave available in rooms. Rooms had heater, ample towels and connecting doors. Parking was difficult for some rooms and hard to manoeuvre out back. Friendly staff, would stay again.

Scenic Hotel Punakaiki was exactly what we needed clean, quiet rooms, friendly staff, and a calming atmosphere that matched the stunning surroundings. The hotel is right in front of the ocean, so you wake up to the sound of waves and can unwind with the most peaceful views. Everything felt well maintained and easy no stress, just pure relaxation. It also offers great value for money, especially for such a scenic, restful location. If you’re heading down the West Coast and want a cozy oceanfront stay that doesn’t break the bank, this is your place. Samirah 🌊🛏️🌿✨

Beautiful spot. Staff were amazing, friendly and helpful. Room was perfect and the food was great. Highly recommend the Salmon and the Lamb Shank, and for dessert the mud cake and coconut ice cream.
