Scenic Hotel Punakaiki | Best places to stay in New Zealand

"This solid-looking eco-resort offers a safe harbour from the buffeting winds and raging ocean – and a great launch pad for exploring Paparoa National Park – one of New Zealand’s hidden gems. The rooms are on the Spartan side, but the resort is well-run and within easy striking distance of all the major local attractions such as Pancake Rocks and the Punakaiki Blow Holes. There are superb walking and cycling trails nearby – and e-bikes for hire – plus beautiful bays and beaches to explore. Prices are reasonably high – but you’re paying for glorious isolation, adventure and as much clean air as your lungs can absorb. It’s a 90-minute drive from the nearest town, and 3.5 hours from Christchurch, but the untamed wilderness is on your doorstep. Families with children of all ages are welcome. " - Mark Chipperfield

The location, view, and restaurant were great. The restaurant was very good, especially with the 50% discount promotion for guests staying at the hotel. I paid for a rainforest room but my room had an ocean view so maybe it was an upgrade. It was a very nice view. Unfortunately, the room itself was disappointing. There was leftover food in the fridge from previous guests, no air conditioning, and the fan was old, rusty, and dirty. Our shower was completely broken, with water spraying everywhere from the hose. The staff were responsive and moved us promptly to a new room, which I appreciated, but it was still a hassle. Even in the replacement room, the fan had the same problem. There were also tiny dead flies on the bed, which made me wonder how long the room had been empty. Small things were off as well, like the lotion container that was not attached properly and fell off the wall. The rooms are also right on the highway, so it was a bit noisy. Overall, beautiful location and great food, but the rooms really need better upkeep.

The hotel is direct to the ocean and the rooms are on top of a hill with view over the ocean. Our room even had a terrace with two chairs. Nice warm room huge bed and an extra bed, very good. The restaurant to the hotel is very fine and it is a pleasure to dine here with the view. Food and service was excellent. Breakfast is continental with extra goodies. Thank you.

Wonderful place to stay, eat and relax. I wouldn't stay anywhere else as l just love it there. Food and beverages at restaurant are well thought of and beautifully prepared. Rooms were spacious and views were amazing, we stayed across the road, and the tunnel under the road is a nice safe way of getting too and from dinner and beach.

Incredible service with a magnificent view frok the foyer/bar . The property seems to own the beach with un divided views and the property is designed to make you feel like there is hardly anyone here. |Nothing is too much for the staff with wine recommendations and thoughtful touches in the spacious rooms . My room had a direct view of the beach over the car park. |Staff had afternoon treats in our room on arrival and sleep room spray and the heater turned on when I returned from dinner.|Dinner was absolutely delicious. Incredible offering in a remote location. With fabulous service.

The hotel is situated on the beach or across the road from the beach with an underpass to connect. Our room had views of the gardens and the beach, facing the sunset, which was lovely. The room itself was well equipped with a kitchenette, comfy king bed and nice bathroom. The terrace outside was nice in the evening sun. A great restaurant and bar with views over the beach with raging surf. We really enjoyed our short stay!

Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly. Our rooms were very nice and tidy, with a fantastic view of the beach. We were a family group, and the adjoining room was a lovely surprise. We enjoyed cocktails in the bar, followed by a delicious dinner and dessert. We also had breakfast the next morning, which was amazing—every meal we had was absolutely faultless. Our restaurant waiter was very friendly and made us feel truly welcome. We can’t wait to go back and would highly recommend this place to others!

Warm welcome from a very pleasant staff. Room was very nice with coffee and tea service waiting. Comfortable beds. Very clean. Stunning views. Parking spot was right outside our door. On site restaurant was very convenient as we arrived a little later in the evening and were able to enjoy a wonderful meal a few steps from our room. Great location and quality operation.

We had been advised by a relative that this hotel on the beach was worth staying at. We had a deluxe room up on the hill across the main road so we were not actually on the beach. However the view of the ocean was fantastic particularly in the stormy weather. Due to the weather we had to drive down to the restaurant for breakfast. Restaurant fully booked out by tour groups for dinner but the tavern about 1.5km down the road saw us right for a meal. The complex seemed to have several different standards of rooms and I think ours was the best.
