19 Wineries and Tasting Rooms to Visit in Sonoma County - AFAR

"A small, husband-and-wife operation where the winemaker’s biochemistry background informs a scientific yet accessible approach to tastings. With production limited to roughly 600 cases per year, the native-fermented, unfiltered wines are discussed in depth by the proprietor during creekside tastings—ideal for visitors who want to nerd out on winemaking without feeling overwhelmed." - Bailey Berg, Tim Chester, Jessie Beck

Google
Intimate, rustic & exclusive wine tasting experience. Loved the cozy setup & in depth, candid chat around each wine. Highly recommend compared to a typical mass hyped winery.

The cozy, sweet tasting experience Rob and Laura provided for our group was the best one we had our entire trip to Sonoma. The space is beautiful, the wines were delicious, and we loved hearing about how they got their start! We had the best time, and we’ll definitely be back!

Rob (owner and winemaker) was our host when my wife and I visited last week. His history drove his passion for making great, sustainable, native-fermented wines on another level, which is shown through his intentionality. Please visit them for a tasting when you get a chance and become a club member! You won't regret it.

Stumbled upon Schermeister Winery and did a wine tasting and boy are we glad we did. Some of the best wine we've ever tasted and we enjoyed talking with and learning from Robert, who was very generous with his time. Joined the wine club and look forward to what comes in the future from this talent. A Hidden Gem!

Google
Rob the wine maker gave us one of the most interesting tastings in years.... So knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate about his art while seamlessly pouring delicious wines and explaining both the art and science behind it. Besides, the tasting room is in a great location in Glen Ellen with plenty of other delicious things around (chocolate, patisserie, restaurants, etc). A must visit.

This winery is the perfect little nook along a bubbling brook. The wine is delicious and the schermeisters are very welcoming with an array of wine knowledge. They have a way of making you feel like you've come home with the rustic, modern design on the inside. It's perfect for private to large group tastings. Definitely have the Pinot!

Google
Great winery tucked away in Jack London Village. All their wines are fantastic, but the Grenache and Syrah were particularly great. Plus excellent customer service and a very sweet dog named Eli to welcome you in. Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
When looking into wineries in the area, Schermeister stood out to me because everyone said the same thing - that Rob and Laura are amazing and that you have to come by. After a few tours of very large wineries, we ended our week in Sonoma and Napa with Schermeister and it was, undoubtedly, our favorite stop. Not only was the wine our favorite we had, but, as reported, Rob and Laura were just so welcoming and wonderful. They felt like old friends even though we had just met. Also, their tasting room is just gorgeous and in a lovely area. I whole heartedly recommend stopping in at Schermeister if they're open (they close when they sell out of wine) and I plan to come back any time I'm in Northern California.

Yelp
We had a phenomenal tasting experience at Schermeister! Rob (wine maker and co-owner) poured our tastings and shared everything behind his wines from the native fermentation process to his journey becoming a winemaker and the techniques utilized to make each wine. His wife (and co-owner) Laura was such a delight and it was awesome to learn about her creative process behind the wine labels she designs. The experience was so authentic and enjoyable, and their wines are all incredibly unique and distinctive. We joined the wine club and can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
Excellent wines, and enthusiastic, knowledgeable education from Laura... I would definitely recommend that you add this delightful winery to your itinerary!

Yelp
Laura, Rob, and their dog Eli were great! Eli was super chill and hung out with us for a bit at our table. Rob served us and spent a lot of time telling us about his background, the wines, and his experiences. It was a fun experience trying all the pairings and oddly, we really liked the vegan cheese spread.

Yelp
The ONLY winery where we loved every single wine exposed to us. So we popped our membership cherry. It was a pleasure sitting and sipping and enjoying these wines crafted with love. We saved wines for our anniversary and oh my goodness it was special!!! Thank you!!!

Yelp
Had a great experience with the Schermeister's today. Excellent boutique'y (is that a word?) wines. Great hosts and even better wines. Ok, that didn't sound right, but you know what I mean. Worth a stop and joining their wine club, red and whites excellent.

Yelp
My sister brought me to this gem of a tasting room that she discovered a few weeks ago. We had such an amazing time learning and laughing with the owners, Rob and Laura. The tasting room is charming and warm, and the wines were amazing, delicious, and unique. Rob and Laura's passion for wine shone through as they poured their best offerings. We also had a chance to play with their aroma bar, which was such a creative way to highlight the olfactory side of our wine tasting experience. As someone who isn't as confident in the high-society tasting rooms of Napa, Schermeister was a breath of fresh air. I will definitely be back (with friends!) to learn and taste more in the future. I recommend putting this one on your list if you are looking for a playful, immersive, and one-of-a-kind wine experience!

Yelp
If you are in Glen Ellen for the day, it is definitely worth your while to stop in and meet the Schermeister's (and their adorable dog Eli). Wines - We really enjoyed the ability to try three different Rosés in one sitting. We were impressed by the quality Pinot Noir that they offer. My personal favorite was the Viognier. Hospitality - Being hosted by the Owner & Winemaker has its perks! The Schermeister's offer a passionate and interactive tasting experience; everything from smelling the different essences and scents found in the wine to eating delicious walnuts from their home that pair beautifully with the wines. Location - Located right on Arnold Drive in the Jack London Village barn-like building. Very easy to find, lots of parking. Pro-tip: Call ahead of time to schedule an appointment. It's always best if someone can prepare for your visit.

Yelp
Lovely 5 pour tasting outside. Their style is a bit lighter and natural. We tasted their rose, viognier, 2 Pinot noirs, and Syrah. Favorites were the viognier (not sweet, guava on the nose!) and Syrah (lighter, just enough tannins balanced with a touch of acid). The pinots were really fun to try, as they were very different from each other. The tables are spaced out nicely all around the shop, and our somm was very friendly and informative. Would love to come back to revisit!

Yelp
We visited Schermeister Winery in March. We were waiting to check into an Airbnb and stumbled upon one of the most lovely experiences. The owners, Rob and Laura, are two of the most authentic, intelligent, and creative people I have ever encountered. The patio is lovely for wine tasting with a resident dog who gently greets you. The wine was excellent! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
What a nice place and such a great yelp find. Was driving looking for one last tasting of the day and found this place. The owner and his wife, who is an artist, are so nice. She made us feel right at home and the place is in a beautiful spot on the river. The wines were so amazing we became club members. Are excellent stop and hope we will be back soon

Yelp
Laura and Rob are so fun. A boutique winery with a very personalized experience. Laura is a great story teller and Rob gives facts about the wines and their dog Eli. A really fun experience in a relaxed atmosphere. They have interesting varietals and give insightful reasons why they chose the fruit and the growers. It is all oak cask and unfiltered. The 2013 Pinot Nior is sublime. If you prefer an intimate experience of upscale wines where you can learn more about the region and wine making, this is your spot!

Yelp
Our favorite winery / tasting experience we've been to! Rob, the owner and winemaker, was our host and taught us so much about the wine he makes, and wine in general. And the wine is phenomenal! We joined their wine club and can't wait to go back! Thank you, Rob, Laura and Eli!

Yelp
Beautiful winery, but more than anything, this is a very different wine tasting experience! Set in beautiful Glen Ellen, this amazing Winery is owned and operated by a very loving husband and wife team (and their adorable dog of course) and it shows in every way. From the expert wine making of Robert to the incredible decor that Laura has crafted inside their eye catching space (including paintings she made herself!!!), they make you feel like you walk right into their home and sit down for a conversation. After hanging out for a couple hours (which most places call "a tasting") we left feeling like we just had such a rare experience. It was warm, inviting, fresh and the wine was of course incredible! This is a must go!

Yelp
Our very first stop on a quick overnight wine country trip was Schermeister and I truly cannot wait to go back. Lovely shaded outdoor seating by the river. Comfortable social distancing, hand sanitizer and mask etiquette in place. The wines are so well crafted we took home several bottles - a standalone Rosé of Nick's dreams, a Syrah of my dreams and a Pinot that perfectly captures the taste of its Russian River origins. Loved sweet, relaxing Eli their "Captain Goodest Boy" and Nick and I joked the rest of the weekend that Robert helped me realize I need to begin my birding "life list" haha. Looking forward to visiting again in the future.

Yelp
This is a can't-miss stop, a hidden gem - from the wines to the owners and ambiance. They are so passionate about the craft and amazing storytellers in terms of how each wine is brought from vine to bottle. Cannot recommend this place enough and it is 110% worth the visit.

Yelp
What a great experience and excellent wine. My wife and I stopped here to explore. The tasting was educational and the vintages were nicely aged. We appreciated all of their wines, and took home a bottle of the unique rosé. Highly recommend for a stop in the Sonoma region.

Yelp
My friends and I did the Private Tasting with the Winemakers. The wines were delicious and the Schermeisters made us feel right at home. Try all the Rosé and Pinot Noir!

Yelp
Visited this winery a few weeks back. It is tucked away in a beautiful corner of wine country. The winery sits right alongside a beautiful Creek. Listening to the water of the creek while enjoying a nice glass of wine was very soothing and relaxing. Rob and Laura gave excellent advice and information on wine trends. The deals they had were very good as well as the tasting and smell trivia. Will definitely be returning to this spot as it is magic.

Kira M.

Yelp
Honestly the best winery if you like the quality, craft and experience of a small winery. You can learn a TON about wine making from Robert, who is very knowledgeable and no-BS. The wood working and art inside (done by Robert and his partner) are beautiful and so tasteful. The Viognier is INSANELY good and I miss it every week.

Alice W.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the wine tasting + small bites at Schermeister. The winemaker was personable and gave us great descriptions of his wine, which paired nicely with the small bites he personally curated. The design and style of the winery was lovely as well -- we appreciated the customized tasting cards for each party!

M L.

Yelp
What a cool surprise! We had visitors for the weekend and passed by the "winemaker is in" sign so we stopped for the visit. Laura and Rob were very welcoming and accommodating. We're all seasoned winery visitors and they provided a nice relief: knowledge without pretension. Great wines, atmosphere, humor, and authenticity. They are now on our list of "hidden gems" in Sonoma wine country!

Robin P.

Yelp
Gorgeous interior with aromatic wines. The spring hill Pinot noir is delightful. Robert and Laura are lovely -- plus they are birders! They know wine, but they also know how to make you feel welcome.

Ryan A.

Yelp
I've been into the Sonoma/Napa county wine country for about a decade. Living in the Bay Area makes it a common weekend destination. Having been to hundreds of wineries, I'd put my experience at Schermeister as a top 5. Not only is Rob (winemaker / owner with his wife Laura) one of the most knowledgeable winemakers, but their passionate and genuine approach are rare. They are always happy to spend time speaking about the process but make you feel like family. Now that I'm a member, I'm even more impressed with the wine. I loved it the first time but think I undervalued how good it is. Whether you're in town visiting or a local, make this cozy/laid-back winery a spot to check out. You'll definitely come back regardless.

Briana G.

Yelp
Julia was so welcoming and friendly! We had a wonderful time and will definitely return soon!

Dannye D.

Yelp
Rob and Laura, and doggy Eli were so lovely. Rob spent so much time explaining each wine in depth and teaching us about the process and various environmental effects. It was fascinating and lovely to be with friend here. This is the type of experience we seek. Some of the best wines we've tasted. Fantastic.

Lora W.

Yelp
Rob and Laura are exceptional. We had the best chardonnay of our lives here. As wandering tourists, we weren't sure where to go next, but (of course) Rob had the answers. He even called the next winery to see whether they could accommodate us. We highly recommend this winery.

Stephen T.

Yelp
This really is as good as it gets. The wines were a revelation, and the tasting room is stunning. Ask Robert to explain why he takes such risks with natural yeasts, instead of using stronger commercial strains. His wines will make a believer out of you as they did for me.

Carlos J.

Yelp
Went to Schermeister Winery for the first with friends to celebrate my B-Day. Ron and Laura (the owners) were amazing and very gracious hosts. Ron is a very knowledgeable wine maker and makes you feel at home at this beautiful place. The Viognier was my favorite and I highly recommend it for a nice summer evening.
