Just so very disappointed. I’m new to photography as a hobby and was really excited to have a local camera shop nearby where I could get advice and buy new or used gear. Unfortunately, the customer service here is absolutely horrible.
I received a gift card for Christmas and went in to purchase a polarizer filter for my Sony 200–600mm lens. I asked the associate for a polarizer, and he grabbed one off the rack and rang me up. I paid with the gift card and the remaining balance in cash. Once I got home, I realized he had sold me the wrong filter—it was just a regular clear protective filter. Mistakes happen; I get it.
I went back a couple of days later to return it. I was greeted by an employee who looked at the receipt and said, “I didn’t sell that to you—someone else will have to do the return,” and then walked away. The next associate—the one who sold me the wrong filter— after waiting 20 minutes for them to finish with another customer, said they could return the whole amount to the gift card, but if I wanted my money back the remaining ~$97 would have to be refunded by check, and I would need to come back another day since the accounting department was closed.
In an attempt to avoid that, I opted for an exchange instead and picked out a monopod, bringing the difference down to ~$80.To which he was insisting the balance be put back on the gift card. I asked to talk to a manager, so then I waited another 20 minutes. I was told that anything over $50 must be refunded by check, which is not stated anywhere in their return policy or posted in the store. The only posted policy mentions that debit card purchases over $250 are refunded by check. When I pointed the posted policy out to the manager his response was, "Oh, heh, I haven't read that in years." Despite this, they refused to return any cash and said they would mail the check, which they promised would be sent first thing next business day.
Two weeks later, I still had not received anything. (There had been a snowstorm, so I gave them some grace.) When I called the store, I was told that a check had never been written or sent. Five days after that, I finally received the check in the mail.
I’m sure they’re knowledgeable about cameras, but they are severely lacking in basic customer service. I worked in customer service for over a decade and this doesn't even meet even the most basic customer service standards. Also, as someone new to the hobby, I was planning to upgrade my old Sony a6600 to either an a6700 or an a7R V, and I was really looking forward to discussing my options in person with someone knowledgeable. Unfortunately, I’ll be making that purchase anywhere but here. Thankfully, there’s a wealth of information available online.
