Set in a beautiful vineyard location high in the hills surrounded by beautiful views and period buildings, there is so much to like about the place before even entering the establishment. From the outside the building looks dated, albeit with character. However that impression is soon put to bed with a modern interior. There is absolutely no sign of an old building from inside. Beautifully designed interior with modern architecture. The bar area has a nice moody feel, then you enter the dining area which in the day time is has all the daylight entering through the vast amount of glazing. At night the lighting presents mood lighting and focused spot light on the tables.
The food is superb. Beautifully presented. Tastes superb with delightful texture. As expected there is bread to start. There were two spreads. One being a soft cream cheese with chives. The other what can be described as caramelised butter. Had buttery taste, but what can only be described as clarified butter that has a butterscotch taste.
Ordered mushroom soup - note the breaded base will have meat unless vegetarian requested. The base is like a suet breaded base with mushrooms (selection of different types). This is presented first before the soup is poured over. This was delightful as there is texture, taste and smoothness in one bowl. The pumpkin salad was beautiful. Charred pieces of pumpkin with sweetness. Melts in the mouth.
For mains we had Venison stew, trout and pasta. The venison was beautifully cooked with incredible depth of flavours in the stew. The meat as expected was soft and cooked perfectly. The trout was lovely. Fresh. What made this dish stunning was the pumpkin sauce base with pieces of pumpkin and gnocchi. The gnocchi was super soft and absorbed the gorgeous sauces. This was a stunning dish. Pasta with truffle was a great hit. Smooth creamy sauce with generous shavings of truffle. Creamy and earthy.
Desserts we had panna cotta and a dumpling in a red plum sauce. The panna cotta was a huge hit. Topped with a mango sorbet and biscuit. The dumpling was interesting. More like a soft bread/doughnut. On its own it’s questionable, with the plum sauce it all worked. Accompanying with a scoop of frozen yogurt.
The service was superb.
