Best Bagels in Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"The claim to fame at bagel shop — with this location in University City and another near Reading Terminal, plus a roving food truck — is customization: Customers can add mix-ins like roasted garlic, berries, and wasabi to base schmears such as cream cheese, hummus, and whitefish salad. The possibilities are endless." - Ernest Owens

We have ordered catering from Schmear It for the office twice and they don't disappoint. The bagels are great, but the schmears are incredible. I love that they don't skimp on the add-ins. This most recent time we also got little yogurt parfaits which were also a hit. Also I love that they always include printed signs for each spread! High recommend, will likely order again.

Google
College bagel cafe that shares a space with an Indian restaurant. I got an everything wake n bacon with a pork roll. I saw whitefish on the menu but only as an add own, not as it's on sandwich topping. My breakfast bagel was good and filling, although I'd rather do a pork roll or bacon instead of both. Most people got theirs to go but there were a few people eating in.

Google
The Loxsmith sandwich was delicious. The lady at the counter was extremely friendly and made my food with care. The dining area was not very inviting. There were old lights stashed in the corner and it felt kinda dirty overall. Would return next time I'm in the area though.

Google
For the price, it’s a pretty good bagel. This place has some more out of the box options and because of it I tried the french toast bagel, which has a french toast flavored bagel, maple syrup, cream cheese, strawberry and bananas inside. I might try something else next time but it was good. Pretty quick service as well.

Google
As a New Yorker, I usually don't have such a positive review of bagel places but this one is legitimate! Not only are the bagels fresh, but they have a great variety and the spreads and combinations are very inventive. You also won't break the bank here: I'm probably going back at least once this weekend!

Google
Super fast service, excellent bagels, interesting/fun bagel creations, and a convenient location. Pictured is a veggie egg sandwich on whole wheat everything (delicious though greasy), Wake N'Bacon on Plain, a smores special on chocolate chip bagel (absolutely delicious, will be returning for this one), the stuffed French toast bagel (okay, very banana-y, I'll pass), and a loxsmith with whitefish (also exceptional). highly recommend the restaurant and it's going to be a bit of a staple going forward

Manil Shrestha

Google
Toasted everything bagel with bacon, egg and cheese. Highly customizable, and friendly staff with overall great bagel. If you're in University City, "Schmear it" instead of spreading once in a while. ;)

Steven Dreibelbis

Google
The egg sandwich part of my meal was well prepared. The actual bagel was good... Not great. Probably more of a maintenance bagel than a "go-to" spot. They were very nice at the counter, but didn't bring the food out to the table, and forgot about our drinks. They apologized for the lapse in service, but it was still a lapse... Maybe a spot to stop in and grab a bite to go if I'm in a fix, but not a destination spot for me.

Yelp
Great service - friendly and efficient staff. Delicious bagels! Love the concept of mixing everything together so that the veggies aren't falling out of the sandwich and getting super messy when everything is separate. One of the best bagels I've had in a while - will definitely be coming back whenever I'm in the area!

Yelp
A really great place to get wonderful selection of breakfast bagels with various fillings. I am picky with my bagels, but for a decently priced and good quality breakfast bagels I highly recommend this place. I got their iced coffee also and it hit the right spot! Cannot wait to go back and try other breakfast bagels!

Yelp
Walked .5 Mile in search of some delicious breakfast bagels and this place did not disappoint! While the dining area is nothing to write home about per say, it is clean and more than sufficient for a largely take out venue. The excellent service and delicious food certainly makes up for any lack of dining ambience. I ordered both the Loxsmith and the Dragon and both were absolutely fantasticBagels were fresh and the fillings were plentiful and delicious. Will definitely come back the next time we visit Philly.

Yelp
Quick service. Run by friendly student workers. Place was clean and so was the bathrooms. The bagels were toasted crispy on the outside and pillowy inside. The flavor combinations were great! I really enjoyed the Philly roll which is sushi inspired with lox and wasabi+soy sauce. I felt the wasabi balanced the cream cheese. The scallions also added a nice texture. Don't ask why we put it in a blueberry bagel. It didn't effect the flavor overall though, just added a fun color. The Loxsmith was what I expected, classic and simple. I enjoyed the tomatoes inside too. The bagels are cut in half and it's easy to eat on the go. I'm usually very messy and I was able to munch as I explored UPenn campus without dropping anything. The balance between filling and bagel was also perfect. Highly recommend this quick morning, on-the-go snack.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast. They have a pretty nice selection of different breakfast/lunch sandwiches. I opted to try their lox everything and wake and bacon sandwiches. The toppings and cream cheese were tasty. I thought the bagels were lacking in the taste department sadly. Tasted dry and not enough chew. The employees were very nice.

Yelp
Who would've thought of chopping up smoked salmon, cucumbers, tomatoes, and onions and mixing it into the cream cheese? Schmear It did! Stopped by here on my last day in Philly and wow, it sure did not disappoint! The bagel was soft yet still dense like a bagel. I loved the fact that they mix everything that goes into a lox with the cream cheese. That way you don't have to worry about all the fixings oozing out/not getting the perfect bite!! Overall, for the price I'd DEFINITELY be returning here if I wanna get my bagel fix in!
google avatar

Yelp
Small space with limited seating but the bagel was AWESOME! I've never had a bagel with such an interesting combination of items that gave it a unique eating experience.

Diane H.

Yelp
I'm at 34th Street Station and I was thrilled to find out there is a bagel place 2 blocks away. I enjoyed my lox and cream cheese bagel on a sesame bagel. I'm very happy. Thank you so much.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
It's amazing! Fresh veggies mixed in! My family really loved it. I liked the level toastiness of the bagels.
google avatar

Kimberly G.

Yelp
Great bagels! I got the loxsmith and the spread to bagel ratio was perfect. I ordered online and picked up. Super smooth process and I love that it's pretty contactless - it was efficient to order ahead of time and receive a notification once it was ready. Plenty of outdoor seating as well!

Julia C.

Yelp
Love these bagels! I'm from New Jersey so I know my stuff. The staff were wonderful and even called to confirm my order to make sure it was correct. Would definitely recommend to a friend!

Rafi Y.

Yelp
The ambiance in this restaurant gives me the shivers. As I pull on the 40 pound door to enter, I am greeted by everyone in the building staring at me for 5 seconds. Maybe it was the wind, maybe it was nuance of my 4D fit, but I went to order. She spun the iPad around and I hit skip faster than Husain bolt. I get my bagel. It's good.

Stuart B.

Yelp
The description of the Loxsmith needed to be more accurate - It did not say lox spread, but cream cheese and lox - which refers to sliced lox - I asked for the bagel toasted, and it was barely toasted, if at all. The product was a good-tasting bagel and spread, but not what I expected. I am going to Spread Bagelry next time.

Yelp
This place is amazing! This sandwich was one of, if not the, best breakfast sandwiches I have had. All of the employees were very kind and service was super fast. Definitely coming back soon!
google avatar

Olga K.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this cute modern spot while in the area to run an errand. Place is very clean, staff is attentive, and wearing nice branded uniforms. I thought it was a good touch. Bagels are great; had a Caprese bagel sandwich (vegan version). As a vegan, I appreciated the business being able to customize virtually any sandwich into a vegan version by using tofu (non-dairy) cream cheese. The presentation was neat and my sandwich tasted great! Also, very moderately priced. Will come back!
google avatar

Jemima L.

Yelp
The location was situated in what looked like an office building. There was no storefront but the signs leading to it and the Google map directions made it easy to enter the building and find the stand. We arrived shortly after opening and I ordered the Mexican egg sandwich on a lightly toasted everything bagel with the option of adding the jalapeño schmear for $1. Wow. The ingredients were fresh and the sandwich was made to order. The jalapeño schmear elevated the sandwich. Definitely will be stopping by on my next visit to Philly. I HAVE to give one of the lox schmears a try!

Tara M.

Yelp
amazing bagels and great people that work there. That being said, I've been getting schmear it since they opened and there's been a definite decline- there's been barely any cream cheese on the bagels the last 5-10 times. I know they sell out, but now that Kismet opened at the market, I've been going to schmear it less due to lack of cream cheese. I don't mind paying $6.50 for a bagel w cream cheese, but there should be cream cheese on it... it's a shame

Emily L.

Yelp
Very friendly workers and very quick service. I got a plain bagel and it was still so good!! Good seating as well.
google avatar

Vincent J.

Yelp
This business knows how to provide SUPREME customer service! They get it!! No matter what time of day, each of my visits have been welcomed with a bright "hello". They have a very unique menu, and the brown sugar additive to the cold brew is extremely tasty. Keep up the great work, and for those of you reading this...stop in and ENJOY!
google avatar

Yelp
I love bagels as I am a jersey girl and a pretty harsh bagel critic. The bagels themselves were below average, they didn't seem fresh and were so tiny. However, the spreads were great. The cream cheese was very fresh and there were multiple options to mix into it. We got the scallion cream cheese which was amazing and created a veggie spread by adding tomatoes, scallion, and cucumbers which was very good. The staff was very friendly and bagels are priced well for living in a city! This place will satisfy your bagel cravings in Philly.

Yelp
My friend and I made a pit stop here after coffee run and I must say... Spread has got some serious competition. Schmear actually gets your order right. I walked out of Schmear with actually spread "schmeared" on my bagel, unlike walking out of Spread only to find out much too later they forgot the "spread" (multiple times). Service: very friendly and attentive at Schmear. I've ran in to some POS's at Spread. Food: GREAT. I love the customizable bagels too. I got my first bagel here today and regret nothing. I asked for a standard bagel with cream cheese and strawberries and mangos as fruit. I expected them to spread the cream cheese and sprinkle fruit and and making a sandwich out of it. Nope. These guys scooped heaping spoonfuls of strawberries and mangos and mashed it into the cream cheese. Super generous with the cream cheese and fruits too. The bagel was still fluffy and this was at around 1 pm. Not to mention, Schmear is also gluten and vegan friendly. Not that it pertains to me, but definitely a shout out to all those with dietary restrictions. I think it may be dairy friendly too. Schmear welcomes all! I am super eager to go back for a savory bagel now! And they also have a frequent consumer card to get stamped per bagel/order!

Yelp
10/10 would recommend getting Schmear It catering for any event!! My husband and I ordered catering for our wedding morning (to the bridesmaids/groomsmen suites) and it was the best decision! The bagels/Schmear/coffee were soo yummy and the team was incredibly easy to work with. Plus, my husband and his mom needed Gluten Free options and they had the best GF bagels they've ever had (trust me, they've tried them all!).
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
CARBS IS NOT A DIRTY WORD! If you see me shamefully eating a fresh bagel with garlic and chive cream cheese hand whipped made to order, by myself in the corner...don't judge me..judge your mother. Just and overall wonderful Bagel shop. We all know they are hard to come by in this neck of the east coast.
google avatar

Yelp
So I've been craving a really good bagel, just a bagel... and have yet to find a decent spot till now. I've gotta say, you can have great fixings for a bagel, but if the bagel isn't good... then it just ruins the whole sandwich. It came to my surprise that this place has so many options, and it made it hard to choose from, whether it was sweet or savory or a little mix of both. I love that there we're pretty-made choices for you to pick from And is also customizable, I went with an everything bagel which was just perfectly crispy on the outside, flavorful, and soft and doughy on the inside!! Ahh I went with the wake n' bacon egg sandwich added jalapeños and a crispy hash brown, now it came out to be a little pricier than I'm used to.. but bacon schmeared cream cheese!! It was crispy, doughy, juicy, creamy, savory full of texture with a little heat. Ugh it was so good, and so filling. 10/10 would recommend check it out!
google avatar

Shelley G.

Yelp
The employee that answered my call when I couldn't find the entrance was nice. I ordered an everything bagel, I included pics. I really like everything bagels bc they're exactly that, sesame, poppyseed, etc. The bagel I got was something, yes. Everything, no.There was ALOT of lox and there was alot of smear on only 1 side of the bagel .

Noelle Z.

Yelp
delicious bagels that are ready within minutes!!! perfect crunch, flavor, and ratios. Got a vegan chocolate chip bagel with vegan cream cheese. Haven't been able to have one in ages. Will be back!
google avatar

Daina M.

Yelp
I love the bagels here! They're not super dense on the inside and have a nice soft texture which I love. I hate the dense bagels that feel like a brick. I also had the strawberry peanut butter parfait - yummy and filling! The staff are very friendly and you can likely find parking on the street in front of the store.
google avatar

Peter H.

Yelp
Very much on 36th Street, not Market. The staff is so friendly; I've never had so much fun ordering a bagel. My recommendation is to go all-out and get whatever toppings tickle your fancy. Everything looked extremely fresh: lox, tomatoes, red onion... yummm. And even though I only had plain cream cheese (it was right before an exam; couldn't risk experimentation), boy was the cream cheese creamy and tangy. The bagel itself was fine, but I get to temporarily exercise my New Yorker snobbery and say I've had better.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Gluten free bagels!!! So hard to find. And they have lots of them: plain, everything, cinnamon raisin, and French toast! They're a bit on the small side and a bit dense, but good none the less. Very filling. The lox-Smith is lovely. Cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomatoes, cucumbers, and scallions. a whole lox bagel can be overwhelming but this is really nice.
google avatar

Lindsay W.

Yelp
I love this concept! I've never seen anything like it and it's so simple. You start by picking your type of bagel, if you want to add an egg, and then you decide your cream cheese and what you want to put in the cream cheese. They mix the fresh ingredients into the cream cheese for you almost like a marble slab. It is so fun to make your own custom sandwich and there are so many options. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I didn't know what to pick but they were able to lead me to something. It was delicious! It's probably good I live out of town or I would be here weekly. Lastly, they give some of their profits to charity which I think is fantastic. Go support this great business.
google avatar

Julian S.

Yelp
I had a gluten free bagel with vegan cream cheese mixed with lox, cucumbers, and scallions. Tasted great but the bagel was tiny and overpriced at $7! Good customer service though.
google avatar

Bunny L.

Yelp
Went here again!! Amazing food and service. The staff were very friendly. If you are indecisive, ask the staff for their opinion! Definitely plan on visiting here more often
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
I'm back. Walked into a pleasant surprise on the weekly special: salmon avocado roll. As a salmon lover, avocado lover, and sushi lover I HAD to try it! I got it in my usual toasted everything bagel. It was delicious. The added wasabi is a real kick! Again, they are good with the cream cheese to bagel ratio. I love that the bagels are two "top" bagels, meaning both the top and bottom bagel have the seasonings. I'm determined to get another free bagel! For every 9 bagels, you get a free bagel with UNLIMITED toppings. Yes, really UNLIMITED!
google avatar

Diana D.

Yelp
Echoing off some of the other reviews, the employees here are very friendly, the bagels are great, and there is a good selection of bagels and spreads. The location is a little tricky, the official address states Market St, but the entrance is on 36th St. I couldn't find it at first when driving there, but then I remembered that their website stated "off 36th St." I got the Veggie Delight on a whole wheat everything bagel and it was delicious! The bagel had a good texture, good flavor, and they are very generous with the spread, so you won't be lacking any. They combine the ingredients to make your spread after you order, so it's fresh! Even though there was a lot of spread (don't get me wrong, not complaining, it was good spread!), I didn't feel heavy after eating it. It was a good way to start off my morning. There is a seating area with plenty of seats and my food was brought out to me as I waited for it -- so that was a plus! I hope to make it back and try some of the other bagels and spreads.
google avatar

Howard R.

Yelp
As a NYC transplant I miss my bagels and Schmear-it is able to satisfy my bagel craving! Their locksmith bagel is fantastic and makes me very happy. The staff is also incredibly kind going as far as delivering my order when Uber Eats had an EPIC Fail! Limited hours at the moment due to the current situation, but if you can order from them they are fantastic
google avatar

Julia W.

Yelp
Absolutely love the lox on an everything bagel from here! So delicious and satisfying. I'd give 5 stars but one time I went the bagels were off and a little stale and my friend didn't understand why I liked it here so much. Every other time has been consistent though! Will continue to go!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
What a fun and yummy spot! Bagels and spreads are made to order with fully customizable add-ins. The coffee was yummy too! We each had a savory bagel and split a sweet bagel. I opted to try the vegan cream cheese which was delish. Staff and atmosphere are really great. Only downside, the bagels are a bit small and dense. I'd like try the s'mores bagel next time!
google avatar

Tammy C.

Yelp
I was craving a bagel because I was having NY withdrawals and the first place I thought of was Schmear It. I normally go for a scallion cream cheese nova lox on an everything bagel but this time I was craving a sweet bagel so I tried their stuffed French toast. I expected something very sweet, but it wasn't too sweet which I liked. They combine the cream cheese, strawberries, banana, and walnuts in front of you which is something I've never seen before. It's like cold stone but cream cheese style. The portion is perfect (not too big compared to the ones in NY where I would save half for later) and I can finish a whole bagel in one sitting. The bagel came out warm and crispy which I didn't expect either. Amazing. I would come again. I want to try their bacon egg on an everything bagel though.
google avatar

michelle z.

Yelp
Got here 10:30am on the Sunday after saint patty's day. Score!!! Not busy, only 2 other people. Goldilox was awesome. Coffee fantastic. Yumm
google avatar

Victoriya S.

Yelp
I was really really upset with this order. Part of this was my fault for ordering a lox bagel that came with egg, but I take the blame for that. The bagel was child sized at best. It was a fraction of the size of a normal bagel. I ordered the loxsmith with white fish salad as extra. What came was a slip fest. The whitefish salad was runny and there was barely any lox. This was a big waste of money and thoroughly upsetting. My wife ordered a bagel and hers miraculously came in adult size. Pics for comparison.
google avatar

Polly E.

Yelp
Whether you're a classic bagel and cream cheese eater or prefer a more decadent schmear, Schmear It is the place to go. Just north of 36th and Market, Schmear It is slightly off the beaten path but worth a visit. It's delightfully homey, has all of the different bagel combos that your heart could desire, and is a great spot to sit and chill with a tasty breakfast our lunch. Highly recommend visiting and getting your bagel on!
google avatar

Shelby A.

Yelp
Schmear it has become my #1 breakfast spot during the work week. First of all, I need to mention the wonderful people that work here...the staff is AMAZING. Friendly, accommodating, they make great recommendations, know their customers and regulars, they go out of their way to make you feel valued. They also provide phenomenal and fast service. So all around fantastic staff here. The food is also amazing! The bagels are delicious and fresh. I love the schmear and how it is basically customized per order. They mix all of your items into the cream cheese (or Schmear) and then put it on the bagel. This helps you get a great schmear to other item ratio! I like to get my bagels scooped. I find that the schmear stay on my bagel best this way, and then there isn't too much breading with each bite. My favorite items are: Loxsmith (I get it personalized though, I do not get it with tomatoes or scallions and then I add a little white fish and jalapeno)- I would say this is my favorite! The Stuffed French Toast- perfect for when you need something a little on the sweeter side The Flaming Islander-a nice sweet and spicy option! I like to get this with Medium Heat The Nutty Nanner-its like dessert on a bagel S'mores-also dessert on a bagel Monster Miler-a nice breakfast option that gives you a little crunch! They also have great looking breakfast sandwiches and yogurts, I just have not tried these yet. I also really appreciate how you can customize pretty much anything here. They also have light and vegan cream cheese! Prices are super reasonable, and the quality is really great! I look forward to trying more of their menu items and continuing to frequent this location! I highly recommend stopping in or heading to their food truck if you have a chance!!

Nicholas C.

Yelp
Fantastic. I spend 2 weeks a month traveling to different cities around the US and I always look forward to Philadelphia overnights because I can come here. Best way to describe it is cold stone for bagels.
google avatar

Grace G.

Yelp
My go to order here is a loxsmith on sesame bagel, I love how the spread is mixed fresh when you order so it was no problem to sub lite cream cheese. The bagel itself looked very rustic and tasted delicious, but the spread was the highlight.
google avatar

Han-Yin L.

Yelp
We all had the "LoxSmith" with different bagels ... very fresh and tasty. The seating area was clean and spacious.
google avatar

Kellsey R.

Yelp
As far as bagels go, NYC takes the cake. However, Schmear It isn't far behind. I am always on the hunt for the best veggie cream cheese and I can safely say I've found it here. It has a delicious blend of multiple vegetables (carrots, tomatoes, scallions, onions, cucumbers, etc). My go to order is an everything bagel with the veggie cream cheese and I won't dare stray from that.
google avatar

L T.

Yelp
Arrived Sunday around 10 am. Quiet but then got busy. Ordered the Penn, Loxsmith, Dragon, and Goldilox and coffee. Our server Brian was great and offered recommendations for first timers. They blend all the veggies and cream cheese to order so it is super fresh. The bagels are the perfect texture, allowing the perfect mixture of bagel and filling in each bite. Each of our party claimed that theirs was the best flavor. Great coffee with half and half or skim milk. Located on Drexel campus, it is a fave of college students. It's run by Brian and Dave who donate a portion of their proceeds to various local charities.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
Like a salad station but for bagels! You get to customize it with anything you want. Service is also really great- very nice woman at the counter and quick service.
google avatar

Taylor D.

Yelp
Yummm. A friend recently described this brick and mortar version of a Philly food truck as 'Cold Stone but with cream cheese and bagels instead of ice cream and cones'. I couldn't find a better way to describe it! A bevy of savory and sweet 'Schmears' to add to a bagel, oatmeal, egg sandwich, or yogurt, litter the menu providing options for every patron. They serve another local favorite -- Rival Bros Coffee -- at a reasonable price (though they could up the coffee to water ratio in the brewing process to get it similar in quality to the real thing). I got the loxsmith on a whole wheat everything toasted -- it was filling, adequately stuffed with toppings including lox, and quite delicious. Hands down prefer over Spread Bagels down the street. Will recommend to fellow bagel lovers!

Yelp
Great bagels made fresh. Great spreads and some healthy options as well. The bagel chips are surprisingly good for a good pack away snack on the go. The staff is exceptional and kind. The location allows you other eating options so it's a perfect spot for pick eaters or large groups.
