"Schmidt’s Sausage Haus in Columbus’ German Village has been a family-operated mainstay since its transition from a meat packing house to a restaurant in 1967. The Schmidt family legacy dates back even further, to 1886, when J. Fred Schmidt, a German immigrant, opened a meat packing business in south Columbus. His grandson, George F. Schmidt, later established the restaurant, known for its signature Bahama Mama spicy sausages and oversized cream puffs. Fifth-generation co-owner Matt Schmidt continues to honor this rich history, which includes the luscious cream puffs. Among them is the Buckeye cream puff, which I found to be a treat trail standout. This indulgent dessert’s lightly dusted pastry shell is overstuffed with vanilla pudding and whipped cream, enriched with a distinct peanut butter base, and topped with a generous layer of chocolate fudge and chopped peanuts. “Everyone in Columbus knows and loves the buckeye flavor,” Schmidt says. “It was a no-brainer to create this cream puff that resonates so well with our local Buckeye football fans.”" - Wendy Pramik

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I recently dined at Schmidt's Sausage Haus, and I must say, it was an outstanding experience! I tried the turkey Reuben, and it was absolutely delicious—perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor. The side of potato pancakes was phenomenal; they were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, truly a must-try! The beer selection was impressive, and I opted for a German light that complemented my meal beautifully. To top off my visit, I took a cream puff to go, which was a delightful treat! What really stood out was the fantastic interaction with the staff and fellow guests. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it a great place to enjoy a meal. I can't wait to return for another round of those amazing dishes! Highly recommend!

Google
I saw quite a few YouTube videos recommended German village and this German food restaurant. We ordered the sausage sampler plate, it has 4 types of sausage, I loved all of them. I also tried the pretzel nuggets and sauerkraut bratwurst balls out of curiosity. They are kind of similar with some Chinese food: fried vegetables&meat ball and fried bread. Very interesting. It’s worth a visit if you want to try German food.

The atmosphere was lively and the place was full with many people waiting in line. The service was friendly and fast. I don’t eat pork so I did not have their famous sausages as even the beef ones have pork mixed with the beef. The server suggested two no pork dishes and I went with the breaded veal with mushroom burgundy gravy, and sides of red cabbage and potato pancakes with applesauce . I had a non alcoholic beer with the meal and for dessert their famous jumbo cream puff (vanilla). The only thing I really enjoyed was the beer ! I didn’t like the texture or the taste of the pastry shell and so I only ate the cream filling. The main dish was okay but not delicious. I guess I could not have what people come to this place for because of my dietary restrictions so it was not really the place for me.

Located in the heart of Columbus’s German Village, Schmidt’s has been serving up classic German fare since 1886. It’s a popular spot—definitely touristy—so don’t be surprised by a 20–30 minute wait. Thankfully, there are a couple of gift shops nearby to help pass the time. Once seated, we were met with quick service and hearty, traditional German dishes. The food was good, the prices were reasonable, and the building itself has plenty of old-world charm. A fun stop if you’re in the area and craving schnitzel or sausage.

Google
Excellent food, excellent service, excellent atmosphere and entertainment! I’ve been wanting to visit Schmidt’s for a long time and when I visited Columbus recently, we made this our first night’s stop. Not only was our meal great but we also really enjoyed the atmosphere along with the gentlemen playing the tuba and accordion. Although the main course was delicious, the cream puffs were out of this world. So glad we stopped here and will definitely be back!

Excellent German Fair. Many beers on tap. Love the dunkel. They also have resumed the buffet which is $25 and you can try a lot of things. Cabbage rolls are baller for sure. Definately worth a stop but you may want to reserve online as there sure can be a wait. Potatoe salad, stew and cream puffs are pretty rad. Apple struedal with ice cream is on point. They had live music when we went 4.6/5

First time I was here, I stopped by just for the cream puffs after hearing that they were a must. They are pretty big. Second time, also stopped by for the cream puffs but casually ended up in line for the restaurant. We were in line 5 minutes to it opening in the morning and decided to dine in. They had the buffet option for $25 but looked mid. Ordered regular menus instead. The sides are swappable so if you dont like the preselected, feel free to swap with another. Despite them being at full seating capacity at 1130am, the service was quick and food was served promptly.

Food was great! Especially loved the saurkraut balls which were tangy, crispy, and warm; and the pretzel bites(which seemed fried a bit), which had delightfully crispy edges, tasty crusts, and warm soft interiors. We asked for the Rattler(lemonade and beer), and our waiter was super nice and did what he could and made one with sprite and beer. It turned out well! He was a tall blond guy who was super nice and checked in on us a couple of times. I think his name was Lee? For mains, 2 of us were able to share a sausage platter which we added crispy potato pancakes to(with plenty of leftovers), and one of us got the hunter schnitzel which was also crispy and tasty. Both dishes came with potato salad which was surprisingly tasty(chunks of potato and not bitter or dry), and some kind of saurkraut. Both krauts were good, but the red cabbage one was a bit sweet while the one with pork was more sour. The sausages were each different and all tasty. I would recommend trying the potato pancakes(crispy) with the applesauce(delicious, chunky, not too sweet) as well. We came for the cream puffs, but unfortunately the pasty part felt hard like it was stale or defrosted. The bottom part of the pastry was the softest and best area though. As a positive, the cream was very delicious, smooth, and not too sweet! The atmosphere was nice too. Overall pretty good!

Yelp
The food was amazing we left full and it was not expensive the service was amazing. It was my first time there and will definitely go back very authentic food and uniform from the servers The restaurant made you feel like you were in Germany

Mara D.

Yelp
The food was phenomenal. We ordered the sausage sampler and the hunter schnitzel. The Bahama Mama sausage was delicious! If we're ever in Columbus again, we'll definitely eat here!

Emily H.

Yelp
The bahama mama sausage is so good, I ordered it unsure about it given the name, but it gave a good amount of spice and the quality of the sausage was great. Sides are also awesome. dont skip the pretzels or saurkraut balls!

Yelp
We were meeting up with family for the afternoon and chose to stroll through German Village and grab lunch. Full disclosure, we chose this place for cream puffs so that was the priority! It was a bustling place on a Saturday afternoon and we had a pleasant wait outside. The restaurant is a well lit family friendly spot with lots of seating and a view of the bakery case as you walk in. Our server was helpful and friendly. We tried an assortment of things and shared. I ordered the ham and cheese which was enjoyable to me but others felt it was a bit salty. The person with the meatloaf was pleased but not really my cup of tea. Schnitzel was good... the potato pancakes were the yummiest thing on all of the plates in my opinion. Our cream puff assortment was enjoyable. Half of us liked the vanilla puff best with the thick bavarian cream. For the other half, chocolate and peanut butter won. Both are solid choices. The delightful little cheese tart stole the show for me. Tangy and cheesy- it wasn't as sweet as regular cheesecake and I enjoyed it. This was a decent restaurant for homemade style food. I don't think anyone was really blown away by anything but I might go back to try sausages and have another cheese tart!

Debbie F.

Yelp
When back in German Village, I am compelled to eat at Schmidt's. We met two friends for lunch on Saturday afternoon. Despite putting ourselves on the waiting list, it was still a lengthy process to get a table. The food, as always was wonderful. All four of us ordered different items and loved them. I went for the Milder Bahama Mama with German potato salad and enjoyed every bite. My only complaints were how crowded the tables are and that they only serve Pepsi products.

Matthew P.

Yelp
This place had great atmosphere like your neighborhood eatery place feel. Service was good . I had the sausage sampler, I don't know maybe I haven't had that many German sausages but the I did not care for any of them they tasted like processed meet and barely any flavor. The sourkrat was on point though. I also had a side of German potato salad which was like on the verge of like warm it was ok. The applesauce was good though. We also spilt a giant cream puff. My partner had the ham and cheese on a pretzel bun.... It was so dry. Don't get that Overall it's a tourist trap

Greg T.

Yelp
This place hits the restaurant trifecta (Food, Service, Atmosphere)!!! In the heart of German Town, this old world charm restaurant makes you feel like you've been transported to Bavaria. The live music was festive yet not overwhelming. I have eaten at German Restaurants around the country and this location will be on my must return list. I had the curry wurst, Wiener schnitzel, and cream puff. Good lord - make sure you come hungry! The place was very busy on a Saturday night, but the staff handled it as if we were the only folks there. Thank you Laurenzo for a great experience.

Heather L.

Yelp
I had some friends from CT that were meeting me in Columbus and I thought this would be a great spot to bring them! We had a very nice dinner! It is a casual atmosphere but the service is great! German village is a unique little area of Columbus and the centerpiece is Schmidts! I had long had them at the state fair or the food truck but this was my first time at the physical restaurant. While my favorite thing is the Bahama mama sausage, I had to try something else this time! I had the cabbage roll dinner that came with their staple potato salad and I really liked the spaetzele mixed with green beans side! It was all a generous portion and I really liked the flavor of the roll. I was too full for dessert but got some bahama mamas and cream puffs to go at their walk up deli counter where you can just walk in and grab some stuff to go. Check out their seasonal monthly cream puff flavors or try the staples such as vanilla or buckeye. These cream puffs are huge and a must try!

Haleigh P.

Yelp
After living in Columbus for 8 years, I have finally got to try this staple. Forewarning this place seems to be packed 24/7. You are able to put yourself on a waitlist online which is a life saver. It takes me about 25 minutes to get here and the wait at 1:30pm was around 40 minutes. Once I arrived, I think we waited about 15 minutes to be sat. There are some fun shops around the restaurant to kill some time. Despite being packed, food came out quickly and our server was very kind and attentive. I had a bahama mama drink, pretzels and beer cheese, potato soup, and a chocolate cream pie. Everything was fantastic!

Beth H.

Yelp
Visited for lunch on a Wednesday just after opening. Already busy. GPS took us to the restaurant through small cobblestone streets that were small as alleyways. Very small parking area. Glad we grabbed a spot with our big truck. We are in town for a music festival at Crew Stadium but HAD to visit Schmitz Sausage Haus. Very old world traditional inside with staff in Dirndl or all black. We enjoyed a fine lunch while sharing a 32oz tankard of cider. I was dancing in my seat, I was so happy to there again. Waitress was attentive. We cashed out and went to the takeout counter to get dessert for later and sausages for the grill while camping at the festival this week. Choice place for a good Bavarian meal.

Maleewan K.

Yelp
We tried sausage platter, pork schnitzel, and tuna salads. All were very good. Particularly like their waffle fries, sauerkraut, and apple strudel. The applesauce that came with sausage was also great. Quick service, although our waitress spilled a lot of water on the table when refilling our glasses. The cream puffs were ok, not the best we ever have. Loud and lively ambience and we came during lunch hours.

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I have finally scratched eating at this German Village icon off the bucket list. You know a place is popular when they have their own merch. I was hoping for some guys with accordions (nope), but we did get lederhosen, schnitzel and jumbo cream puffs! The sides were the star of the show and we tried them all. The warm red cabbage is incredible and the spaetzle is buttery and perfectly cooked. The chicken schnitzel was like a hockey puck - way too dry. Service was fantastic. They also have a deli counter at the entrance where you can purchase sausages or sides to go.

Gregory F.

Yelp
You can't talk about Columbus restaurants without Schmidts coming into the conversation. Truthfully, this would be on the list of places I'd tell anyone to go if they were visiting the city for just one night. The authentically German vibes both within and outside the restaurant are immaculate - the servers really buy into the theme and culture from which the food stems from, and you will almost certainly leave happy no matter what you order. That said, order yourself a nice brat or sausage - it's what they are known for - and if you get it sandwich style you get a generously buttered roll (think Cane's toast but better) to go with! Don't cheat yourself on a nice pint of hefe to go along with. The spätzle was delish too! Fits the brand of German Village well.

Stephen H.

Yelp
Pretty good German fare and the service was, for the most part, very good. I ordered a sausage sampler, but to be honest, I didn't know what I was eating and nor did the server. They serve applesauce sprinkled with cinnamon and a sweet sort of kraft. The bread is serve hot and buttery, like a warm piece of toast. The hostess wanted to seat me at the bar, and I said no. A small table would suffice. I also ordered a light German house lager as recommended by the bartender. The food was fresh and good. Very clean and extremely festive. Ticket time was about 10 minutes. German music piped in over the sound system. Heart of German Town. I'd say 3.5 stars: 4 for the food, 4 for cleanliness, 4 for ambience, 3 for service.

Patrick P.

Yelp
When I was researching where to go in Columbus, OH I was surprised to see there was a "German Village." Of course upon learning there was a German Village in Columbus I was not surprised to see the go-to place there was called Schmidt's Sausage Haus. Inside everything lived up to its German theme: there was festive music in the air and the entire staff was outfitted in outfits fit for a beir hall. When one goes to a sausage haus, you have to try all of the sausages. Which also apparently is an option: you can get an "all-you-can-eat" sausage meal there. Instead, I got some Currywusrst and the Old World Sampler. All of the sausages were perfectly charred from the grill. The Currywurst was so juicy and well-spiced, and the waffle fries were perfect for dipping with the sauce. For me, the winner was the Bahama Mama- the secret seasoning makes all the difference! If you find yourself in Columbus' German Village, don't think- just go to Schmidt's Sausage Haus.

PJ S.

Yelp
Cabbage rolls were so delicious and savory. Bahama Mama had great flavor and snap but a few gristly bits. Mashed potatoes were beyond buttery. Sauerkraut is the best I've ever had and Ioved the German potato salad as well. Vibe is lively and service is very friendly. Wish I'd tried one of the cream puffs as well!

R B.

Yelp
The food is fantastic, fresh and flavorful tasting. Our server Mike was professional and friendly. He was able to answer all questions, even about the painting by our table. A little bit of a wait to sit and good time on getting service and food. Worth the wait.

B M.

Yelp
Authentic German restaurant, from atmosphere, the live polka music, the clothes, and the food. From top to bottom really tasty. Had the sauerkraut balls to start, an interesting take. The sausage plate was just terrific, flavor and texture was perfect. The sauerkraut, red cabbage, and German potato salad were perfect accompaniments, and the homemade applesauce was delish. The hunter schnitzel was thin and tasty. And of course the dessert menu, complete with a half pound cream puff (the house special) topped it all off. Friendly staff. But plan ahead, the place is so good, it is packed, and they don't take reservations.

Tony B.

Yelp
I always stop here anytime I'm traveling through for a few decades now. It's a Germantown must for me. I brought my niece and nephew here for their first time today and they loved it. We even brought six cream puffs home to share with others. Dinner times can have a decent wait so use the Yelp app to get in line early. I love the candy store two houses down to shop while you wait. You can't go wrong with whatever you order. Pass on the pretzel bites as they drop them in the fryer before serving. I just had hopes of a good fresh soft pretzel. But I'm being picky... Seriously you'll be happy with everything.

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
We met our son here for lunch and I ordered their corn beef sandwich. My sons ordered their chicken schnitzel. My husband ordered a sausage platter. Everything tasted authentic and fresh, just like if you had a German grandmother feeding you her best meal. This place usually has a wait so get there early. The dining area really does make you feel like you have been transported to a small German village diner. There is bigger rooms upstairs if you are wanting to do a bigger party. Call them for the details. Anyhow, really cool place, they even sell some of their great tasting sausages so that you can take them home to cook. I highly recommended coming here if you are in the Columbus area.

Fred S.

Yelp
I recently went to Schmidt's Sausage Haus Restaurant for the first time. What a great experience! We started our meal with the Sauerkraut-Bratwurst Balls. They paired exceptionally well with the creamy mustard sauce. For my main course, I selected the Old World Sausage Sampler, a plate with four of the Schmidt creations, accompanied by hot kraut (with pork), German potato salad, and chunky applesauce. My beverage of choice was a Warsteiner Dunkel. I chose the all-you-can-eat sausage option, as it was only $2 more than the regular portion. Our server was very personable and efficient. When the check came, I was floored at the reasonable pricing. I wholeheartedly recommend that anyone visiting the Columbus area should include Schmidt's as a destination for great food!

Stan B.

Yelp
We had a late lunch at Schmidt's today. We arrived around 1:20 and the place was packed with a short wait. Schmidt's is always worth the wait! Service was fast, friendly, and attentive even with a full house of patrons. We ordered a Bahama Momma platter that came with hot German potato salad, sauerkraut, and chunky applesauce. We also had a Smash Cheese Burger with waffle fries. Both meals were delicious and no matter how many times we eat here over several decades the delicious consistency is a solid 5 stars every time!

Felicia K.

Yelp
All the food and desert is homemade. What is not to love about that. We are from Florida. The sausage had unusual spices but very tasty. Loved the purple cabbage slaw. Sauerkraut and potato salad is served warm. Very unusual but good. Drinks are very large. Locals love that and so do the visitors. They are known for their cream puff, had to try one. The cream was out of this world. Loved their story which i Posted a picture of for you all To read. Service was amazing, from the bar tender to the waitress. welcomed us and our friend that had been going there for about 50 yrs. So the food runs thru his veins. lol! They were very appreciative of us coming to try them Out. Schmidt's sit in a small German village that has been around for a Long, long time. So dark woods, homemade levers to open cabinets, tons of pictures everywhere that tells tons of stories of the family, the people and history. What a blessing to have 5 generations and still going strong. Loved the German style uniforms they all wore. Should go experience a little bit of nostalgia. Hard to come by anymore.

Nate J.

Yelp
Checked in with the online Yelp waitlist ahead seeing there was already a wait. I very much appreciate this establishment does this. Arrived around the excepted time and was immediately seated. Waitress was very nice, took our drink order and asked if we had questions. Love the ambiance, the music and decor. The food was a small wait nothing bad at all, and the food was hot and delicious. I have been here before and would come again! They have a nice showcase of desserts, but I had no room for them tonight. Be aware, they are under going renovations so bathrooms are upgraded bathrooms outside but there are signs posted everywhere they are under going renovations so there are no surprises.

David Y.

Yelp
First of all, this could be the best German food I've had, at least from any restaurant that still exists. (RIP Alpine Brauhaus!) I got the sausage sampler, and the Bahama Mama sausage was the best of them - though all were excellent! My wife got the (real veal!) Wiener schnitzel with a side of Jaeger schnitzel gravy, and also a vanilla cream puff. The service was relatively quick, and the staff were friendly. The decor was classic German restaurant / Oktoberfest style. I don't live in Columbus, but I'll be coming back here on every visit!

Rachel K.

Yelp
This is our must visit spot in Columbus. We have family in Cleveland and Cincinnati so anytime we're doing a visit and drive from one family visit to the other we make it a point to stop at Schmidt's. On my latest visit I stopped for a to go order and ended up getting their bahama mama with potato cakes as well as more Bahama Mamas to freeze to take home and their seasonal Graeter's Black Raspberry Chip cream puff. I also grabbed a mug as a little keepsake to add to my collection. The take out order didn't take too long and I waited on their little bench by the cold cases and people watched as a bunch of families came in for meals. My to go order came out hot and delicious as always. We like dining in the best but it's nice to know that it'll be a great experience no matter how you order it.

Jane G.

Yelp
I can only speak to Schmidt's massive cream puffs, as I can't eat meat (my German ancestors are ashamed), but these cream puffs most definitely lived up to the hype. As big as my face and as creamy as can be, they come in a variety of fun flavors (like peanut butter!) and are what Schmidt's is known for. I only wish they had more veggie-friendly options.

Lynn C.

Yelp
Their food is amazing! There is usually a wait but there is plenty to explore right outside the building. There is a fudge house to the right and a little shop to the left to check out. The food is so flavorful, and their coconut cream pie is to die for. If you're not into coconut that's fine, they also have German chocolate cake, and cream puffs. 5 stars every time

William J.

Yelp
This is a stop on my way to or from visiting family several times a year. This visit was my first since 2020. Unfortunately, the restaurant is now disappointing. We host an authentic German dinner twice each year at our VFW. The food at Schmidt's is disappointing. The saving grace used to be the buffet. Previously, I would only buy the buffet so I could sample everything. Now there are only menu items. I had the schnitzel with potato salad and cabbage. The schnitzel was chewy and the potato salad was bland. I liked the cabbage. It seemed that since discontinuing the buffet someone forgot how to make the food here. I will likely not stop here anymore because of the lack of both quality and attention to authenticity lost over the years. Several of the staff are wearing mask still as if they were useful in the first place. Diner be aware this a gimmick of what it once was while clinging to wearing facial costume masks that are also cheap and useless.

Eric T.

Yelp
A fun German village spot. A must for of town visitors and tourists. Get a cream puff and a bratwurst. The sausage platter is good and the warm potato salad. Go on an evening when there is a polka band. The service is a little slow on a busy evening. Not a place for a quick meal. Go on a walk after dinner or lunch to see historic German village.

Demetrius B.

Yelp
A Friday night at Schmidt's was a Friday night to remember! Our party of 4 was seated in 15 minutes which was a shorter wait than we expected. Then all of the things that make Schmidt's *Schmidt's* naturally came to the forefront. Liter steins of beer Bahama mamas Pretzel Nuggets Sauerkraut Bratwurst balls Fat Daddy (fried bologna) sandwich w/German Potato Salad Everything that my lips touched was perfect. While the others in my party went for Schmidt's renown Jumbo Cream Puff, I opted for the German Chocolate Cake which exceeded their signature dessert in my opinion. The frosting is the highlight, but the density of the cake itself really added to the dish. As if the night needed anything else, there was a two piece band playing traditional German music... and untraditional favorites like Super Mario Bros, Zelda and other nostalgic tunes with Bavarian flare. I can't recommend this place enough.

Julian P.

Yelp
Pro: cream puffs and music. Grow: Food, music schedule. One of the most iconically restaurants in the German village of Columbus, Ohio. I loved the German theme and they do a great job of incorporating it into the music, architecture, and outfits that the servers wear. I called to make sure that they would have music and was informed there would be live music Thursday from 7 pm to closing. I arrived around 8:30 pm and the musicians were finishing their break. After about 15 minutes they were on the main stage chatting and the music did not start until 9:30 pm. I had asked them at 9 pm if they were going to play music and they said " we were but it doesn't seem this crowd is into music". I was a bit disappointed that they didn't take my request seriously enough to start playing and they waited until an older white couple requested the music to play at 9:30 pm. Food: Perhaps I ordered the wrong food but was not too impressed! I had the sausage sampler and although the sausage was good, the sides were not very tasty. The apple sauce and potato side dishes were bland and just didn't complement one another. I did love the cream puff and beer! The texture and flavor was absolutely delicious, I would come back just for those! Overall, I loved the vibes and desserts but the food needed a little kick.

Kyle W.

Yelp
This is one of the restaurants that are must-try in the German Village a little south of the Columbus downtown area. The place is fairly spacious so we were able to get immediately seated around peak dinner time. We tried the pretzel nuggets with beer cheese, the old world sausage sampler, and Weinerschnitzel. The pretzel nuggets are excellent as they are nicely salted and soft, and they are originally served with their mustard sauce that is fairly mild. The beer cheese makes the appetizer hearty and filling but I recommend the $2 upcharge for it. The old world sausage sampler is also of excellent value as the original plate is $18 but you can pay $2 for all you can eat, so one extra round of sausages already pays for itself. We obviously opted for that. The sausages are fairly flavorful with slightly mild increases of spiciness. The potato and sauerkraut are a bit too sour for my liking, but the applesauce dampens the intensity and provides a sweet contrast. The weinerschnitzel was okay and it is the most expensive item we ordered. The veal is a bit over cooked and the batter is a bit soggy from the sauce. I would skip on this. Service is good as they refill waters regularly and refill the sausage platter at a good pace, especially given that we got about 3 more rounds of sausage for the all you can eat old world sausage sampler.

Samantha W.

Yelp
The food here is so so good, and true authentic German meals. The pretzels are one of my favorite I have ever had because the mustard that comes with was amazing, and I like how they break up the pretzels here so it is easy to share! The wiener schnitzel was just as good as some that I had in Germany and Austria and genuinely hit the spot! The German potato salad was honestly one of my favorite parts of the meal because this is the first time I have had it served hot other than in Germany and I have been craving it. Our service was fast and helpful as well. This place is well worth the wait in line and I can't wait to go back!

Farah G.

Yelp
The restaurant is so adorable, and the food is good too. The gigantic cream puffs are worth the trip by themselves.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Delicious German food for when you get those cravings. I had a great imported Pilsner and a brat plate w two sides. Enjoyed it tremendously. They have baked stuff in glass cases.

Jenny Z.

Yelp
I was super excited to come into Schmidt's. I visited before but it was over a decade ago and I don't remember what I ordered or who exactly we were with even haha. Zach seemed to think we may have done the buffet back in the day? Family came up from Cincinnati and we had an awesome lunch here to celebrate my birthday. It's first come first serve / no reservations and for our table of 8 we had a 20-30 min around 11:30 am. Not bad at all. For apps, the sauerkraut bratwurst balls completely surprised me. These were delicious. I'm not a big sauerkraut fall but these have nice flavor balance with the meat. And then I LOVED the pretzel nuggets - tasted like they were deep fried for a sec. We said it was almost like a funnel cake consistency. The cheese dip this comes with is divine. I ordered the weiner schnitzel (veal) and this was not the heavy meal I was expecting! In a good way. The veal is thin and the breading was tasty yet light. It comes with a traditional potato salad and red cabbage. These are both on the sour/vinegary side vs. the creamy/savory you typically get in the US. Okay and then... the HONEY ROASTED TURKEY REUBEN. Wow wow wow. I did not order this as my main dish but I had a bite that turned into 4 or 5 and it was best turkey reuben I've tasted. Getting that new time. I'd also like to try the burger too which comes with a pretzel bun and looked great. Of course we had to get jumbo cream puffs - one of each flavor - to complete our meal. Ambiance is really fun and historic. The building is about 150 years old. You have German music and servers wear lederhosen. It's really such a fun experience.

Yelp
This place is the real deal for authentic German food. Everything was amazing, and I'm not lying when I say they have the best potato salad I've ever had. The service was friendly, and the restaurant is in the cute historic German village. I really believe this restaurant is a must when visiting Columbus.

Yelp
Had to wait 20 minutes for a seat. Very loud environment. Waitress was helpful. Took a little while for the food. Sampler plate had good sauerkraut and four types of meat. Crème puff was just ok.

Yelp
Not too big on the rest of their savory food items on the menu or buffet. I tried it once back in the day but once was enough for me. It wasn't earth shattering but it was tasty classic German dishes if you're interested. Furthermore they must be doing something right because they've been in operation with several other locations for GENERATIONS so take my review with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, four stars for their ALL TIME classic CREAM PUFFS. These are some of the tastiest pastry desserts you can get in the city and probably one is enough for two. Try one for yourself or share with a friend.

Yelp
Spent some time today in Columbus and had to visit one of my favorite places. Schmidt's in German Village is a landmark. The atmosphere is friendly and the food is fantastic. You will find all of your favorite foods and drinks with the comprehensive menu. Today we ordered a sampling of a few items and shared them around the table. We had to pace ourselves as we passed the pastry counter on our way in and knew we were ordering dessert. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This restaurant is EXCELLENT! Every single thing ordered by our group of 6 was happily eaten until the plates were practically licked clean! I had the fish sandwich (WOW!), my husband had the bahama mama, my kids loved their food and my dad and step mom also got some amazing food (tuna salad and the roast beef dish with spatzle which was YUMMY!). We finished with cream puffs and left with full bellies and happy hearts. Our server was friendly and was good at getting our drinks refilled promptly. The only small complaint was when we checked in after putting our name on the waitlist on yelp, we were quoted 20-30 minute wait, and we ended up waiting over an hour (on a Tuesday night!). It was well worth the wait, though. And it's not something that would keep us away. This is something they can't control. I am glad we added our name to the waitlist before arriving or we would have been waiting even longer! We will make sure to come here every time we come to Columbus! (**Make sure to join the waitlist on Yelp so you can skip the longer wait!)

Yelp
Schmidt's is a Columbus icon and in my opinion somewhere every native or tourist alike should visit at least once. The interior isn't quite as big as other restaurants but it isn't too too small. They have a virtual wait list which is nice so you can track when your spot in line is nearing the top. While you wait I suggest checking out their fudge shop as well as the little trinket shop across the street. They sell things like jewelry, candles, and other goods - a lot of which are made in Ohio and Ohio themed. The fudge shop has lots of great candy options outside of just fudge. But I must say the fudge here is delicious and not going to drain your pockets. Back to the restaurant. Once it is your turn to be seated you should be really excited for the great meal ahead of you. I've never had a bad meal here in all my visits. On my most recent trip I had the Chicken Schnitzel with spaetzle and potato salad. The schnitzel was absolutely delicious, as were both sides. I also got a cream puff to go which I didn't snap a picture of before devouring. The filling is so light and fluffy while also dense and creamy. I don't know how they do it but I will keep coming back.

Yelp
Schmidt's is an old favorite destination we hadn't been to in a while. No disappointment here as the German cuisine continues to be delicious. It was like visiting an old friend with its old world charm and well prepared dishes. The sauerbraten and the sausage variety with sides of spaetzle, red cabbage and German potato salad were superb. Choosing dessert from many appealing options is challenging. Coconut cream pie this time. Staff members are friendly and attentive. Our return proved we definitely need to not be so long for the next visit.

Yelp
It was my second time & boy o boy, everything was A+. You can't go wrong here. I had the Potato Soup, the Old World Sausage Platter. We had the German Chocolate cake & the Jumbo Vanilla Cream puff. Food is excellent, service is excellent and quick. I am always coming back whenever I will be in Columbus.

Yelp
The biggest attraction of German Village is Schmidt's Sausage Haus. This is a family owned restaurant that has been in its exact location for 138 years. It is obvious by the structure of the restaurant, and the rustic interior that it's been here for a long time! There was a huge crowd of patrons waiting to get seated inside. There were also musicians getting ready to preform. The waitresses wore their traditional German dresses. We were lucky we found some open spots at the bar. Lorenzo was the bartender. He chatted with us about Schmidt's, and about how much he loves working there. He's meet so many people from all over the world, while making drinks. We got some beers and and a sampler of four of their famous sausages. We also got three sides. At the bar where we were sitting there was an old wooden door, Lorenzo said it's the fridge door. It kept opening and closing on its own. All of us were coming up with funny stories about who's behind the door. Needles to say we picked a great spot, for a great view of the place and a spot to talk to Lorenzo the bartender. Our food arrived and each of the sausages was graciously cut in half, so we could share our meal between the three of us. I couldn't really say which sausage was which, or which one was my favorite, but they were all juicy and flavorful! We also enjoyed the sides, the German sweet slaw, reminded me alot of my mom's, the green beans and the waffle fries! Everything was very tasty! They also have some of the largest cream puffs I have ever seen in my life. We didn't get any dessert here, because we got some chocolate at their Fudge Haus. This place is so much fun! From the music, to the waitstaff, to the delicious food and drinks, I would for sure stop by here again if life led me to Columbus.

Yelp
Was looking forward to dine here, finally made it to the restaurant to be on a 2 hour wait list. Hung around the area, got to visit the close shops while waiting. When we finally got our table, we had to wait like 20 mins for someone to take our drink order. It is a very lively and loud place, live music and lots of laughter. The food was great and wish the waiter would have come more often to check on us because we would have ordered more things on the menu. Service was very slow but seemed pretty authentic to me.

Yelp
Phenomenal experience here. Despite having been in Columbus for a while this was my first time here. Service was friendly and speedy. Had a sausage with mashed potatoes, both of which were so amazingly delicious and flavorful. Also had their house lager which Rhinegeist in Cincinnati makes and it was super smooth. Topped things off with a slice of German chocolate cake. This place is a Columbus gem for sure. There was live German music playing, and the entire inside was authenticity decorated and arranged. Cannot wait to come back here.
